Zancanaro si apprezza sempre più ascoltandolo ripetutamente! E ancora più facendo confronti con altri baritoni negli stessi brani. Ebbene col ripetuto ascolto apprezzo sempre più l'eleganza dello stile, verdiano senza toni esagitati, senza note urlate e trascinate, timbro bronzeo senza essere scuro, e poi l'ottimo rispetto dei tempi, anche nelle cabalette! Ah, i tempi, i tempi!!!
A questi cantanti Zancanaro, Cappuccilli, Bastianini, Bruson, Panerai, Gobbi, Nucci....o chiunque essi siano, io mi sento di dire solo, Silenzio, Onore e Rispetto per questi grandi artisti che con la loro umiltà, sacrificio e dedizione hanno saputo dare vita a pagine indimenticabili dei Grandi compositori che rimarranno immortali nella storia!!!!

Not much variety or colour to his singing, but he had a solid, healthy sound, and a certain sense of line. He was certainly the best, post-1975, anyway, that's for sure. I don't like the monotonous, loud conducting here.

Ezio - il ruolo più drammatico,eroico e nobile nell'arte meravigliosa,unica nella sua bellezza del Genio Giuseppe Verdi . Zancanaro dal vivo cantava con nobiltà e cercava la bellezza del gesto artistico purtroppo aveva poca voce, sovente l’orchestra “copriva” la sua vocalità e si sentiva poco nella sala. la sua tecnica non permetteva à questo bravo baritono di far “sentire'' la bellezza la bellezza della sua voce … ogni volta quando ero presente alle sue recite mi chiedevo : - ma e' così duro di cantare, di interpretare ?! che mestiere difficilissimo ! poi mi ricordo le recite di Warren, Guelfi,Petroff,Popov,Merrill e compagnia e dopo ogni recita uscivo dalla sala con la sensazione che il canto lirico e' la professione più facile del mondo ! Oggi abbiamo delle voci che si fa fatica a definirle...tenori corti o da strapazzo, baritoni sfiatati, che cantano in bocca, soprani che fanno rimpiangere le coriste del passato... facciamocene una ragione... la lirica di spessore ormai è quella delle registrazioni pre anni 2000. Man, this guy is a model for how to be a great singer and performer in every possible way. And as far as I know, Attila is among the less commonly performed of Verdi's operas, but it's exciting as any with an interpretation this good.
Certi rimpianti si riferiscono sempre alla potenza della voce. Ma questo è un elemento secondario del canto lirico italiano o francese. Qui conta molto la bellezza della voce, la corretta pronuncia, l'intonazione, i tempi giusti, il fiato e soprattutto l'interpretazione sentita nell'intimo. Si tratta del "melodramma" nato in Italia come appunto "dramma in musica" , poi anche "bel canto". La potenza è un ingrediente necessario nelle opere di Wagner, dove l'uragano di strumenti rischia davvero di coprire tutte le altre qualità di un cantante. Qualità che Zancanaro ha sempre avuto.
Ero presente alla Scala , dal vivo era ancora più impressionante, perfetto nel ruolo, mai sentito di meglio, potrebbe contrastare in questo ruolo anche il grande Ettore (Bastianini).
Grande Giorgio Zancanaro.Baritono di rilievo mondiale.Dotato di una tecnica vocale ineccepibile unita ad una notevole presenza scenica. Possessore del c.d.accento verdiano e mai in difficoltà anche con gli altri grandi compositori affrontati.
Più passa il tempo e più ci si rende conto della statura assoluta di Zancanaro. Non era solo una gran voce, ma un artista completo, in grado di dare un tocco magico di vita ai suoi personaggi. C'è più espressività in un solo gesto della mano di Zancanaro che in tutte le smorfie e le urla di tanti altri cantanti.

The most underrated singer of the past century. Always in the shadow of Nucci, Cappuccilli and Bruson, but a greater technician and musician than any of them. Or at least Nucci and Bruson.
Zancanaro is simply a better singer than any of them. His vocal production easily outshines Cappuccilli (whom I heard at Carnegie Hall in the '80's). I also heard Bruson at Carnegie Hall in that era. Nucci was a regular at the Met in that era. Missed hearing Zancanaro in person. But his recordings are better than any of those other singers. And YES, I prefer Zancanaro to Milnes.
Don Kraar I agree with you on most counts.Simply put, Zancanaro was one of the most satisfying singers I’ve ever heard. Technically he neared perfection. Beauty of tone, manly, musical, conveying speech to pitch producing fabulously exciting singing. Heard him in Ballo, and a listener since.

Carissima Amica, Cosa c'entra la vocina della Freni in tutta questa storia?... La Callas quando era giovane aveva una voce meravigliosa,è un fatto. Zancanaro era un attore intelligentissimo. Purtroppo non aveva i mezzi vocali di: Guelfi,Reali,Bastianini,Petroff,Popov,Taddei,Warren e la compagnia...per affrontare questo repertorio,anche queste parole mie sono un fatto. Questa è la mia modesta opinione. Poi se mi chiedono chi preferisco fra Nucci e Zancanaro la risposta è chiara! Io rimpiango ancora che l'arte lirica ha finita in questo modo tragico. Davvero una sorte tristissima per l'arte più bella del mondo! M'hanno rubato l'anima e m'hanno assassinato anche me. Che tristezza !
Perfettamente d'accordo su quanto dice in linea generale. Quanto alla Freni intendevo che la tecnica ha supplito motlo bene ai mezzi "normali" che aveva. Arrotondava i suoni, l'emissione era ben impostata ed ovviamente questo porta a longevità vocale. Aveva una voce non molto estesa ma timbrata, la stessa Gencer aveva una voce piccola ma la sua maestria le permetteva di cantare anche opere proibitive... Era questo il senso del mio commento. Pensi se oggi al posto di una Netrebko avessimo una "normale" Freni... non crede che potremmo dirci abbastanza soddisfatti? Ad esempio ho sentito la Scotto dal vivo nei tempi d'oro e le garantisco che la bellezza del timbro e la buona scuola vocale facevano vere faville ... La verità é che i cantanti di una volta arrivavano a 60 anni cantando intere opere in voce... oggi a 40 sono già dei tromboni sfiatati, relegati ai recital...ed a lei non devo fare elenchi vero??? Su come sia ridotta l'arte lirica italiana sa bene come la penso, quindi inutile parlarne... sono tempi di vacche magre !!!

I remember the first time I heard the extended duet between Ramey and Zancanaro in the Prologo of the Muti recording of Attila - I thought it was one of the most exciting passages of opera and, incidentally, of singing I had ever heard. That was years ago and I still play that duet a least a cuople of times a month. Ezio's phrase 'Avrai tu l'universo, resti l'Italia a me' epitomises for me Verdi's patriotism. Fantastic
Merrill had, what many acknowledge, the most beautiful baritone voice of all. But, he did not thrill like Warren or Zancanaro. These 2,were better musically, stylistically, and technically. Merrill tended to get boring, over time.,
This is the sort of thing that makes me have to look up everything before I post. That's no fun. Last month I listened to the Attila DVD from NetFlix (Nesterenko) and two of the CDs (Ramey and Raimondi). I'm sorry but the last act reminds me of the final scene in Ariadne - the music continues but the composer ran out of ideas.
This is the the final number in the opera. Or I should say the last good number. The opening prolog and first act are wonderful but the last act is dreadful. BTW this video is much better recorded than the Phillips CD. This is more like how he sounded live. BTW II. The historical Ezio (Atius) is known to history as "The Last Roman" - a great and noble hero. The opera libretto portrays him rather like Stillicho - a shady, dicey character.
The historical Aetius (Ezio) was called the "Last of The Romans' The emperor Valentinian III murdered him with his own hand out of jealosy. Aetius had defeated Attila at Chalons. With the death of Aetius the fall of the Western Roman Empire accelerated. Zancanaro had a uniquely beautiful sound but he only got the top under control rather late in his career.
Riccardo Muti's studio recording of 'Attila' was done for EMI. It was Lamberto Gardelli who recorded it for Philips 17 years earlier. I rather like the final quartet from the opera. I realize that it involves a lot of operatic hollering, but there's something to be said for high-octane Verdian hollering, and the singers in this performance pull it off brilliantly.
I don't think he's any kind of tenor. He seldom interpolates high notes. He's a standard range Verdi baritone. He's not a Milnes or Nucci (very high baritones). Of course the Verdi baritone itself is about the same range as a chorus second tenor. When Milnes recorded this aria on his first recital album he ended the cabaletta with a high A Flat (I think).
AFAIK, he's retired from performances - but teaches now! On a YT video (part of a master class), he has, not only an impeccable voice to inspire his students, but a fine personality and rapport with them, as well.

The most underrated singer of the past century. Always in the shadow of Nucci, Cappuccilli and Bruson, but a greater technician and musician than any of them. Or at least Nucci and Bruson.

Zancanaro is simply a better singer than any of them. His vocal production easily outshines Cappuccilli (whom I heard at Carnegie Hall in the '80's). I also heard Bruson at Carnegie Hall in that era. Nucci was a regular at the Met in that era. Missed hearing Zancanaro in person. But his recordings are better than any of those other singers. And YES, I prefer Zancanaro to Milnes.
Don Kraar I agree with you on most counts.Simply put, Zancanaro was one of the most satisfying singers I’ve ever heard. Technically he neared perfection. Beauty of tone, manly, musical, conveying speech to pitch producing fabulously exciting singing. Heard him in Ballo, and a listener since.

La Callas quando era giovane aveva una voce meravigliosa,è un fatto.
Zancanaro era un attore intelligentissimo.
Purtroppo non aveva i mezzi vocali di: Guelfi,Reali,Bastianini,Petroff,Popov,Taddei,Warren e la compagnia...per affrontare questo repertorio,anche queste parole mie sono un fatto.
Questa è la mia modesta opinione.
Poi se mi chiedono chi preferisco fra Nucci e Zancanaro la risposta è chiara!
Io rimpiango ancora che l'arte lirica ha finita in questo modo tragico.
Davvero una sorte tristissima per l'arte più bella del mondo!

Perfettamente d'accordo su quanto dice in linea generale. Quanto alla Freni intendevo che la tecnica ha supplito motlo bene ai mezzi "normali" che aveva. Arrotondava i suoni, l'emissione era ben impostata ed ovviamente questo porta a longevità vocale. Aveva una voce non molto estesa ma timbrata, la stessa Gencer aveva una voce piccola ma la sua maestria le permetteva di cantare anche opere proibitive...
Era questo il senso del mio commento. Pensi se oggi al posto di una Netrebko avessimo una "normale" Freni... non crede che potremmo dirci abbastanza soddisfatti?
Ad esempio ho sentito la Scotto dal vivo nei tempi d'oro e le garantisco che la bellezza del timbro e la buona scuola vocale facevano vere faville ... La verità é che i cantanti di una volta arrivavano a 60 anni cantando intere opere in voce... oggi a 40 sono già dei tromboni sfiatati, relegati ai recital...ed a lei non devo fare elenchi vero???
Su come sia ridotta l'arte lirica italiana sa bene come la penso, quindi inutile parlarne... sono tempi di vacche magre !!!

Meraviglioso per voce e presenza scenica. Un grande davvero, chi lo ha ascoltato dal vivo non può che sentirne la mancanza. Ora di dobbiamo.....accontentare di quel che passa il convento, quanto mancano queste voci!

Not only a great singer, but at the same time the greatest of all Verdi arias. This is what opera music should be - melodious and easy to understand. Therefore, in Italy, opera was a real entertainment to common people in the 1830s and 1840s.

I remember the first time I heard the extended duet between Ramey and Zancanaro in the Prologo of the Muti recording of Attila - I thought it was one of the most exciting passages of opera and, incidentally, of singing I had ever heard. That was years ago and I still play that duet a least a cuople of times a month. Ezio's phrase 'Avrai tu l'universo, resti l'Italia a me' epitomises for me Verdi's patriotism. Fantastic

After Merrill, the greatest Verdi baritone ever...Perhaps ties with Warren for second.
Merrill had, what many acknowledge, the most beautiful baritone voice of all. But, he did not thrill like Warren or Zancanaro. These 2,were better musically, stylistically, and technically. Merrill tended to get boring, over time.,

Last month I listened to the Attila DVD from NetFlix (Nesterenko) and two of the CDs (Ramey and Raimondi). I'm sorry but the last act reminds me of the final scene in Ariadne - the music continues but the composer ran out of ideas.
This is the the final number in the opera. Or I should say the last good number. The opening prolog and first act are wonderful but the last act is dreadful.
BTW this video is much better recorded than the Phillips CD. This is more like how he sounded live.
BTW II. The historical Ezio (Atius) is known to history as "The Last Roman" - a great and noble hero. The opera libretto portrays him rather like Stillicho - a shady, dicey character.

The historical Aetius (Ezio) was called the "Last of The Romans' The emperor Valentinian III murdered him with his own hand out of jealosy. Aetius had defeated Attila at Chalons. With the death of Aetius the fall of the Western Roman Empire accelerated.
Zancanaro had a uniquely beautiful sound but he only got the top under control rather late in his career.

Riccardo Muti's studio recording of 'Attila' was done for EMI. It was Lamberto Gardelli who recorded it for Philips 17 years earlier.
I rather like the final quartet from the opera. I realize that it involves a lot of operatic hollering, but there's something to be said for high-octane Verdian hollering, and the singers in this performance pull it off brilliantly.
I don't think he's any kind of tenor. He seldom interpolates high notes. He's a standard range Verdi baritone. He's not a Milnes or Nucci (very high baritones). Of course the Verdi baritone itself is about the same range as a chorus second tenor.
When Milnes recorded this aria on his first recital album he ended the cabaletta with a high A Flat (I think).
B flat!
On Milnes' album, that was a B flat.
He and Cappuccilli both took that option.
Does anybody have any information on Zancanaro? Still alive? Retired? He was magnificent....
AFAIK, he's retired from performances - but teaches now!
On a YT video (part of a master class), he has, not only an impeccable voice to inspire his students, but a fine personality and rapport with them, as well.
