yes pinyin is a system developed by PRC in 1950's to write chinese characters in "roman letters" . ) but it's not "writing chinese words using english " : to make it simple , it's just a "romanization" of chinese : it will be the same pinyin for everyone (it will be the same for either an italian a french , a german or whatever : that's the advantage of pinyin ... I don't know if you see my point . Anyway , I disagree with victor0933 , pinyin is a very good system but it's used mostly in PRC

Please don't expect a Chinese (especially Taiwanese) to spell Chinese word in PingYin, cause we don't know that. Taiwanese use phonetics ㄅㄆㄇㄈ to pronounce Chinese word(and is the correct method). Just like we learn English pronunciation by KK or DJ phonetics, not from crazy Chinese word spelling(I know some private cram school teach English with Chinese word, so crazy...)
