OMG I also just read The Dry finally! I get so many stellar recs from you, GK. I LOVED it. Passed it on to my mom so she can enjoy. I will 100% read another of her books.
Whiners and Lovers, LMAO. Clever. Also, I actually didn't like Writers and Lovers, but I for sure thought the writing was very well done. I don't see that argument, but that's just me. I'm looking forward to her short story collection because even though the novel wasn't for me, King's writing was very much up my street.
Oh wow, I'm glad you mentioned the dog thing in Salvage the Bones -- I would not be able to handle reading that. Which other fiction books by Jesmyn Ward would you recommend starting with?
This is such a fun idea for a video! I might have to steal it ;) I ended up purchasing Sundial based on your rave review of it, I'm so excited to get into it ;) and these reviews only raised my excitement. I like what you said about book snobbery, and honestly, it is something I catch myself out with still at times. Especially terms like chick-lit, which I've never thought of as a problematic term until recently. But you are right, most of the time when that term is used its to negatively describe a book, or at least to pass judgement towards readers of a genre people would label it with. But why are we assigning certain ideas or tropes in fiction as specifically of female interest? but also, why is something that falls under the interest of a wider female audience assumed as bad taste? Thanks for pointing that out, I think its important to think about. Its very easy for us to change our language, even if there is no real judgement behind it.
Ooh this was brave although I don't really care what strangers think but get v nervous recommending my fave books to friends - if they hate it, can we still be friends?? 🤔 No, the answer is no.
I wish I had given one star to Sundial.. I was trying to be generous by giving it 3.. There is tons of animal abuse stuff in it.. I wonder if we read the same book.,
Lol I love how snobby people get in good reads reviews. Sometimes it feels like they want to show just how smart they are while ripping a book to shreds.
People who respond to animal deaths/violence against animals in novels so intensely are wild. Obviously, it's all meant to be intense, but, as you said, THERE ARE NO REAL ANIMALS
The wonder of fiction. How one book can create so many different emotions & reactions in different people 🤷🏼♀️.
So interesting right!
Loved this video, I agree with so many of your thoughts! You should film a part 2!

Yay I’m so glad!! I just read the sequel to The Dry which wasn’t as good but The Lost Man by her is amazing if you’re looking for more ☺️
This is so good! Also the full phrase is “boring as batshit” hahah I guess it must be an Australian thing? 🤷🏼♀️
Broken Harbour is my favourite Tana French. This was a funny video - love the concept!

Moralising fiction is mad to me,imagine if people just wrote about exactly what they’ve experienced and never had another thought.
I know!!

Thank you! Yes I think it’s all really interesting!
Great video. Reading 1 star reviews of my favorite books is way too stressful for me. I totally enjoyed watching you do it, though. Thanks. 😉
Haha thank you!!
No one could ever give salty Grace 1 star, that’s for sure
Hehe ❤️

I really enjoyed Salvage the Bones but Sing Unburied, Sing disappointed me.
Oh that’s a shame! Have you read Where the Line Bleeds?
@@GKReads Not yet, but I own it. :) Didn’t you read that in one of your videos recently?
