"I own an island off the coast of Costa Rica"...
Cinematic lens : a photographic lens that let you control depth of field and bokeh to emulate the Film Look
And isolate your main subject from the background
there was a small error in the video, you have to use a MD-Nex adapter and not a Konica adapter to mount the lens,
adapters can be found here :
►My Gear List : kit.com/mathie...
This kind of lens can be found for cheap on eBay or in yard sells.
For me the requirements needed to be a cinematic lens are :
an aperture between f/3.5 and f/1.2
a focal length between 21mm and 90 mm

Haha! that was funny didn't expect that :) Also, i can't point exactly why but i missed your voice in this video @mathieu maybe its your funny french accent, but it sure makes your videos stand out even more
You are one of only a few UA-camrs that I can watch the same video more than once. Entertaining with a capital E.
Dope colour grading! I think you should make colour grading tutorial next! :)
Agree, the grade looks great!
BTW I just looked at this lens on ebay like an hour before I saw this video, nice coincidence!
yeah great colors, i love it :D
Great video...as ALWAYS! I freaking love you dude. Please never stop making videos!
Dino attack !!!!
i had to fill the void of dinosaurs in the lenses reviews
i love it, U need to make him a regular character :)
My first 50mm lens was Minolta MD 50 f1.4. I shot with it for 18 months before I returned it back to my dad! Great lens!
This is HUGE, your models are just incredible each time
Such great video. The colors, the model, the lense... Don't stop making these! You inspire me every time!
It is a remarkable lens. I've had it ever since high school twenty years ago. I've given it new life upon my panasonic gx8 and it's created some fantastic and artistic imagery. My prints look like paintings!
I really like the way you colour graded this short movie 😊
Mathieu, THANK YOU so much!!! I just purchased one! I can't wait to use it in a movie!!! ♥♥♥
Oh I love your cheap lens videos! Always inspires me to look at them for my a6000
Excellent work with this vintage lens Mathius and that ending was superb.
Beautiful model and amazing colour grading in this. Great job!
Mathieu: Excellent is the Norm for you, as always. Though totally agree with you on the merits of old 50mm prime, kit lenses, such as Minolta shown here, that I used to own one when it came with my XG-1 film camera, must admit my friend it is the talent in the photographer that is the responsible factor in this production as I know you can do the same with any lens you pick up. I am one hundred percent sure of what I say and let me add that "Mathieu Stern" has King Midas' touch, as you simply turn anything you touch in to gold! Having said that, those old prim 50 or 58mm lenses are truly gems and not only Minolta, but made by most major brands. Its is funny that on the older days, manufacturer's used to sell a kit lens, that was one of the best they made (Puting their pride in their production), in entry package, unlike today that the cheapest, flimsiest lens has replaced that role! Just to make sure buyer, buys more (Thanks to Material World). Anyways, friendly advise to anyone who is inspired, likes this video clip to the extend that now wants to buy one of these lenses: Act fast. Usually after a clips like this the price Mathieu quoted here will be magnified by factor or x2 or more!
Love what you do and as another OP said in his reply below, Please make sure to continue what you do, But More Often. Admire your talent as ever and another delight to watch today morning on this vacation day in USA, "Labor Day". Must say, this was the best Java Coffee of the early day for me and thanks dearly.
In my never-ending quest for great vintage lenses this will be on my list. Great footage!
My personal favorite are the Pentax super Takumar and SMC (they're technically the same) "radioactive" lenses... expose them to UV light with their yellow and I can tell you they rival Leica, Angenieux and Zeiss vintage primes for 100 bucks each!
Mathieu Stern! You are such an insperation. First I bought a LUT from your cool Zoo collection. This Video inspired me to film a Movie i am proud of. And finally: I bought this lens for my GH5S and I cant wait to buy your whole LUT collection and film some more movies. Greetings from Germany ♪♥
loved the shot at 0:45 that was beautiful Mathieu
Anybody doubt you're a real artist, Mathieu? This is gorgeous heart-warming stuff. Tongue-in-cheek too. Also reminds me of my first nifty-fifty that came with my first own camera, MD 50mm F1.7 on an X-700 back in 1983. Maybe not the best 50mm Minolta ever produced but still plenty sharp and nice rendering once you stopped it down a little. Can't begin to tell you how much fun I'm having with my cheapo plastic-fantastic smc Pentax-DA 50mm F1.8 on my crop-sensor K-3. Must be one of the sharpest lenses I've ever shot ... :)
Personally I Had a poor copy of my so was less excited but yours looks sharp!! Glad. Goes to show older lenses can also have poor versions!!!
Love uuu
Loved that you used the Jurassic Park Theme Song to foreshadow the dinosaur!
Freaking awesome work! I own the 50 1.4 MD and while I don't use it much, it's glorious as long as I don't go above 2.8... then that hexagonal madness enters...
I was so happy when I found this lens + Minolta SRT Super + Sigma XQ f3.5 + Minolta Bellows III w/ original box & manual + Cosmos close-up lenses + Braun flash + sun shades + original bag. All for only $10. That was a good day.
dont stop making good videos like this.... love your videos
I'm not sure if I love anyone else's colour work more than yours... Tes couleurs sont tres belles!!
I love the short film! I think it really expresses a lot of emotion (The music helps lol) And that dino attack at the end was super funny ;) I bought all your luts btw! I am more a photographer than a cinematographer for sure but I wanted to show my support for your channel and your work! Also, I have the Sony A6000 which everyone says is amazing for video so I figured I'd give it a shot! There's an abandoned renaissance fair near me. I think I am going to try to get some pictures/ video there this weekend ;)
thanks a lot ! it super cool
The film and the music was so beautiful!!!!
Das 34 it's from Jurassic Park
HA! Just discovered your channel while searching reviews for this lens. Brilliant. Glad I found your site!
Incredible to watch this footage to the song "come to me now" by Kevin Morby instead. It fits from the first video shot 'til the end. The dinosaur even makes sense given the lyrics. And the fish has a meaning, and the confused look too. Can't wait for my full set of rokkors to arrive next week.
I’m not experienced enough, but do have a few lenses, including vintage and modern primes (GAS!). Received this lens today and I must say it’s my best lens so far! I wasn’t expecting a lot, but it looks sharper (subjectively) and has more pleasing colours than everything else I’ve tried so far.
Just got this lens in, pairing with my a7C. Phenomenal results!
Wow de magnifiques images (et un magnifique tyrex ! 😜) ! Les couleurs des photos sont superbes !
Just got this Lens with some pretty heavy fungus for $20 bucks. took it to my buddy’s camera shop and got it cleaned up, good as new. Hyped to throw this on my Sony A7iii
I literally just picked this up from flea market as well! Love your videos keep them coming!
Nice vid. Starting text says you need a Konica > Nex adapter. It needs to be a Minolta MD > Nex adapter. The Konica mount is AR while this lens is Minolta MD.
Jurassic Park theme! Amazing!
The video is so clear and beautiful. Great lens :) At 1:05 is that a slow motion, how did you achieve this effect (e.g at what fps did you shoot the portion of this video)?
60FPS changed to 25fps
Merci Mathieu :)
Ending was Epic 😆
:) surprise ending ! (for her... dino sushi...) Loved the color grading.
Really spectacular!!! Your experiments are truly inspiring: you really makes wish to learn more about photography ...thanks for your videos
Why would anyone dislike this? But anyways, this is pure awesomesauceness 💯😎
Beautiful video. Wonderful as always.
Wow that looks amazing. Can I ask what lut did you use it looks stunning
Hello from Tampa Florida Mathieus... Just found your channel and I am already enjoying your videos. New Subscriber and I smashed the notification Bell! Be well, stay encouraged, and I'll be watching :-)
Very nice colour grading!
Nice video mate! It's without a doubt a really great lens! I've got myself a MINT condition MC ROKKOR-PG f/1.4 (for € 123,- nowdays...prices are rising) and it's my 3rd 50mm f/1.4 lens...I've got one MC lens, one MD II (ROKKOR) and one MD III (latest) series lens. Great to see and feel the evolution...on these lentes. Love them all! Still use them all on my X-700 and XD-s Minolta's
amazing colour grading
Nice soap bokeh balls. I will buy this to replace Konica 50 f/1.7
Beautiful just beautiful. Please keep doing this cinematic lens videos
Great video and photography, wow
Your videos are beyond fantastic
Does the PG matter? I've found loads of these lenses on eBay but only a few have the PG on them - is it worth spending a little extra for the PG? Love the videos!
THAT COLOR THO!
dude that was lovely. There really isn't many example vids that rock a little narrative like this! I went from "awww wow this is breathtaking" to "dying lol" in mere moments. It's a welcome break from serious "non-scientific but still tests-for-testing purposes brick wall" videos.. impressed homie. Just got this lens also (and a few other Minoltas, a later MD, and other focal lengths - I also love my 58mm f/1.4 - it isn't as sharp as the MC/PG, but MAN is it just plain pretty. anyways, keep it bro, looking at your LUTs now. -P
thanks a lot, the brick walls videos on youtube made me want to start a channel with actual real life use of vintage lenses
Mathieu Stern Wow man well I’m glad you did - I was just talking with a fellow shooter how gear-obsessed and tech-spec obsessed the industry is. I get it - and “gadgets / tools” are fun! I love my lens collection and old 60s SLRs and newest Fujifilm stuff all the same. But THIS is a lot better use of “let’s see what we can do with this!”’ I’m so glad you took up this missing piece of the conversation. And I’m thankful/intrigued man! Lovely doesn’t even cover it!
Hey boy, show us how you get that grey background in your photos. It's Amazing.
A tutorial about that will be great.
Wonderful ! What camera did you use for this video and photographs??
I really love your work! I personally woud like to know more about how you get those collours in the videos! could you please make a tutorial on your video workflow?
C'est magnifique! J'aime vôtre travaille.
Funny, here I was looking for which Minolta to get and your video pops up :3
Was definitely waiting for a Raptor to pop out
Your color grading is so beautiful.....
it's from my Lut Pack : Lobster
Waow, color grading beautifull
I'm in love with your work 😍
Hi. Great work. Loved the overall composition and color grading. Do you have this exact color grading available in one of your LUT bundles? Thank you.
But Mathieu, that's not a Konica - Nex adapter (0:25)... You're using a MD-Nex adapter. Might be a good idea if you make an annotation or comment on that somewhere before viewers start to bombard this video with comments asking why their MC/MD lenses can't be mounted to their Konica AR-Nex adapters...
p.s. what camera did you mount it on at 0:30? The one with the gold mount ring?
you are right, i will fix that
it's a fake camera i use to show how i mount my lenses, plastic toy, not a real one :)
Yea I noticed that too. I actually ordered the wrong one, but luckily before it shipped I coincidentally looked in the description LOL
You are such beautiful artistic human being!
dear mathieu, would you like to share your opinion about mounting this lens n nikon j2 cx sensor ,precisely one inch sensor camera!
awesome BGM , awesome video
thanks !
I love this video so much
Glorious!
Thanks I am really inspired to use these in my videos.
LOVED IT!!!
This is really nice, I have this lens laying around in my house. I am about to buy an adapter and go test it. Also nice color grading is it a lut or you color graded that yourself?
Excellent film et traitement !
OMG the Colors .... wow
ASMR Curiosity Cabinet ikr! It's amazing af
Magnifique travail (Sevilio)
Wonderful lens!
Really should have ended it with instead of a t-Rex, used your surroundings and made an eating venus fly trap. But lovely color graded film. I just got mine in the mail. Only just 5 minutes ago took my first pic with it. Not as sharp as I was hoping for. But maybe I just need to play with it some. That's what she said..... I'm even using focus peeking. Did you find that sweet spot. I'm only taking stills so I know 1.4 is way to soft generally. But the bokeh looks so good on your shots. Lovely, well done mofo!
Nice work !
This is beautiful! May I ask what camera body and adapter you used?
This is beautiful! Thank you!
Nice clip. Looks great. It looks as though it was shot on a Sony A7S ii.
Hi Mathieu Sam I like your styles, video and photo. It's look perfect. Nice color grading. What software did you use for video?
Photoshop and Premiere Pro CC
I subscribed just so as to see your future color grading video. Thanks
Which camera are you using ?
So since you are my "lens guru" i would like to ask a question that has been in my head for a while now: In a television show I saw an old shot from around the 1970s where there was a triangle lens flare... So my question: is there a lens with three iris blades or was this flare made with a filter like an anarmorphic one ? I'd love to see a lens like this!
Very easy to make yourself with a bit of black paper, mate.
Sorry for late reply. I know zeiss made couple of triangle-shaped aperture lenses in collab with rollei. Theres atleast 35mm distagon, 50mm and 85mm planar designs that used this anomaly ive come across. Try researching rolleinar lenses and youll find these. Also i know that cinema lensmaker cooke had some weird irisdesigns.

Great video, went ahead and bought this lens!
Sweet lense! I'll have to get one myself. ☺
That’s beautiful! Can I know what aspect ratio and resoluton you used for filmming the video. Thanks!!!
Great Video! Just a quick question, is the color/mood of the video because of the lens? Or is it from the camera body/color grading?
Dafuq, didnt expect that. Are there more lenses like that with different focallength? It's insane
you should check my channel to see more lenses like that, and subscribe
Mathieu Stern Already did :) Wonder why i never saw your channel. Watched it for hours yesterday and learned more then in the last few months. Thanks for that!
awesome work and thanks for showcasing this lens :) Of the other 50 mm's you might have worked with (like the Canon, or Pentax) would you still suggest this one?
Can this be used on a a mount sony
Great stuff man! And what program do you use for color correction?
Very nice, but would have been nice to see the images without so much post production. Maybe next time you include some raw footage?
Man I miss mine!
I was getting ready to do some technical analysis and critique but I just got so lost in those colors and that faded look.
Great work!
wow this is beautiful!
Nice video and beautiful lens. Are there any converters out there for a canon EF system?
