Just so you know Ahmad. Dap and Malachi were real street dudes that lived on theblock that Guru and Primo lived on when they just were blowing up as Gangstarr. They were the dope boys on the block. Malachi was a boxer that didnt even want to rap, but caught a case and to get out of jail, Primo spoke to the judge when he was being sentenced and the judge said no i dont care if he is a boxer, you are a famous musician, ill let him out if you make him a music artist and he has a legal income coming in so Primo did that.
Well Malichi should’ve stuck with boxing cause his emcee skills are absolute trash 🗑️. Living Proof is proof. Now Dap…. Lil Dap was nice af on the mic. He should’ve been solo or paired up with Freddie Fox to create Group Home! The Nutcracker was TRASH!!!!!!
Dope album. This proves that not because something goes platinum that means that is better than underground rap. Not everyone in NYC rap about struggle, but you have to live in NYC to realize that most things in NYC is a struggle. Life is on the edge here. You can definitely get snuff out if yu are not careful and you don't have to be in the hood either.
Word back then we didn’t have UA-cam or etc it was the fat TV 📺 you either make it or don’t with talent however New York was a gritty nasty place back then crime, broken family, drugs, racism, lack of education and love can creates mental illness and confusion also stuff in the food and water make you go crazy 😜
This era of NY rappers came up in the 70s & 80s NY which was a war zone devastated by decay, poverty, crack, neglect, zero funds for social programs & schools, etc. It was not a safe place to grow up so most will have a story or two to tell. The late 90s is when NY started to get gentrified and become a lot safer. These rappers now a days cannot tell the same stories, not because they were born with silver spoons in their mouths but because the struggle is not the same.
LOL!!! Thanks for explaining this. I always wondered about this as well. Being a kid out of the 70s and 80s and growing up in the southwest suburbs of Houston, I would listen to hip-hop from New York and be like "Wow, you can't even walk down the street without running into a dealer or a stick up kid???" And it sounded like it was an issue in every burrough... ha!!!
Kool G Rap is the best ever to rap with a lisp. That’s probably who you were thinking of. Also, that whole Group Home was entirely produced by Preemo, and imo it’s some of the best beats he’s ever produced.
Group Home is Melachi The Nutcracker and Lil Dap. They were a part of the posee Gangstarr Foundation (The G.U.R.U., D.J. Premier, Big Shug, Jeru The Damaja, Melachi The Nutcracker, and Lil Dap). Back then, Hip-Hop groups usually formed posees during that Golden Era of Hip-Hop
Native Tongues (Tribe, De La Soul, Jungle Bros, etc) were all from NY and talked about life beyond street shit. De La specifically talk about how they grew up in the burbs in Long Island so they only knew how to be themselves
Classic track! DJ Premier actually produced Group Home’s whole first album along with Jeru the Damaja’s first 2 albums and of course the Gang Starr albums. They were all a part of the Gang Starr Foundation. Also, Kool G Rap is another rapper with a lisp, but his words still cut through the track like a hot knife on butter
Nah. The 80s & 90s was CRAZY in NYC. If they're from Brooklyn, Bronx or Harlem, or South Side Queens, shit was hectic. Even if you had Blue Collar Parents, them Streets was COLD 🥶!
I lived in Harlem for about 5 years in early 2000's. It's rough man. The mentality of the people is irreparably broken. People on top of people. 75% of the people I knew were on the corner daily and nightly. People go their whole lives without driving a car or leaving the country. Blacks and Hispanics lived together but most of them don't know a single White person. Heavily segregated. Coming from the suburbs of AZ it was a shock for sure.
This album came out at a time when Premier was producing whole albums and could not lose. It’s true Group Home was known for being crazy lyricists but when matched with Premos beats this was a crazy vibe that was all part of that timeframe. Mid 90’s hip-hop was on fire. This album is a non skip vibe. ✌️
Lol it's funny you said everyone from NY raps about the struggle, but right before you said that he rapped "I wasn't living rich but I also wasn't poor" which was him admitting he wasn't doing too good, but also not too bad. The humbleness in that line is partly why that first verse is one of my all-time favorites.
One of the greatest beats ever. I remember Pharrell talking about this song. It has a dope intro at the top, too, not sure if it’s included in the video. Love the lyrics and video. Had the cassette single back in the day.
Catching up...one of my all time favorite albums, bought at least 3 copies of this. Arguably Preemo's best work. Whole album is top tier. Many say subpar lyrics, not every street dude is lyrical spiritual miracle with it. Great effort from Group Home and Preemo. Whole album review??????
Good reaction. Despite Group Home being borderline wack lyrically, this might be one of my most played albums of all-time. "Livin' Proof" is the epitome of grimey '90s NYC hip hop. Premier's production on this is flawless. Aside from "Moment of Truth" by Gangstarr, tghis is arguably Premier's dopest produced project from top to bottom. "The Realness" is my fav beat off this album.
This takes me back to 95' .. premo had a lot of beats everywhere... and the group home ain't come from no silver spoon hahahahahahaha.. The "group home" fits them perfectly.
02:20 NJ had cities with large hoods too. Newark, Patterson, East Orange to name a few. NYC, NJ is a giant metro area. Especially during the crack days. It was out of control. A lot of those areas got gentrified over the years.
The Group Home is Malachi (the first one) and Lil Dap (the shorter one you said was nice). Lil Dap was probably the first "Lil" rapper I ever heard. He's been part of the Gang Starr Foundation since '92. Then Lil Fame came out in '94 with MOP. By the late '90s, the South caught on and Lil rappers starting coming out all over the place.
There are a lot of hoods here. And some area huge. Plus, back then, hip hop was way more hood (less widespread) than now so most rappers from all cities were from hoods.
Lovely track - favourite from Group Home and one of my fav preemo beats ❤️ Also, I like solo track reactions for diversity of artists you react to so that's another great thing about this video 😁👌
Philly is the only city that raps that struggle pain music to a tee believe it or not Philly is one of the Top Povery stricken cities in America and if you listen to Method Man real closely he rap with a lisp heavy lol
Necro also raps kinda with A lisp. Listen to Bury you with Satan you can tell Necro was heavily influenced by Kool G Rap and to top it off they have a collb album ITS DOPE
Most rappers do/did lie... .. I'll start at 75% LOLOL liL Dap has one of the most unique voices in hip-hop. This is arguably DJ premier's best produced album for average lyricists... Erick Sermon and Kool G. Rap rhymed with lisps..
Brother, I just saw you react to the Pharcyde before this. I'd love to see you do a full album reaction to Freestyle Fellowship, Innercity Griots, or you could just try the track: Blood / Bullies on the Block, and see what you think. Best of the underground LA sound of the 90's and some of the very best battle MC's ever. Peace.
Other Rappers I think who Rap with a lisp: AZ (Anthony Cruz) The Vizualiza RZA from Wu Tang Biz Markie (I Think) 🤔 Maybe Keith Murray?? @@KingAhmadTvWord. I thought so too but I'm not a die hard fan of Doom so I've only listened to a handful of his songs. I never got deep into Doom's catalogue outside of maybe 8 or 9 of his songs. I think you're right though.
@@Slayy-uy8mh Good Point. I agree with adding him to the list. I used to mess with both Necro & Benefit during the Napster era, lol. Way back when! Haha 😆 Could have been Kazaa, Limewire or Audio Galaxy too. File sharing type ish.

Damn! That's deep 💯
Factz. And the was in a real group home when they were young
The first one spitting Malachi was only 16 but looks like a grown convict.
@ScorpionKing_ Only way the judge would let him out of doing a bid. Was Primo getting him a contract. Primo tells the story on his channel
That is one of my favorite beats of all time. Premo is such a legend and has orchestrated a significant part of the soundtrack of my life.
Dope album. This proves that not because something goes platinum that means that is better than underground rap. PEACE KING. PEACE TO THE FAMILY. THIS WHOLE ALBUM IS DOPE. PREMO LACE THE WHOLE ALBUM 💯🔥🔥🔥🔥
I Second That! Premo’s Beats were “Simply Magic” on this Album. The Album moves like a Score from a Broadway Play. Premo’s Ear is Mind Blowin’
The man is listening to Group Home?! We're ALL in for a treat! Legit as usual. Thanks for posting.

Crazy me and my people used this instrumental in 96 to make a rap to perform for out African History class in high school. Premier beats always 💯
Personally I wasn’t a real big fan of Group Home but they are dope and Premo beats is crazy 💪🏾
Time has really flown. Almost thirty years ago, I was in front of the TV watching this video.
They receive a lot of flack for not being strong lyricists but I love this track.
These were some of their stronger performances on the album. Especially least from Melachi, who’s usually the worst part of the song.
When anyone asks my favorite joint..its always gonna be Supastar..this shit is so NY..
YOU LOOK INTO PEOPLE EYES YOU CAN SEE THE POVERTY B😂😂😂 BORN IN THE BRONX 💯💯💯💯
