The berry being fed was being squeezed by the parent into each chick's throat to give it some of it's juice. It wasn't that the food was too large, it was done intentionally, to give each chick some of the juices from the berry. The parent ate the rest of the berry after some of the juice had been squeezed out because each chick had been given enough juice. If you look carefully you will notice each chick swallows the juice it received. Quite intentional, and a brilliant method of hydration on the parent's part, this has all been programmed into them by evolution and instinct.
