I can not tell you how the Mito compares to the Swift but I have been able to test the 1.6D Mito extensively against the Mini Cooper D when I was renting a lot of cars on business trips. I have even compared them in the Italian Alps and though both cars are good, the Mito is the better driving car. It gives you more confidence in hair-pin curves. It has better seats for long distance. Both cars can keep up with inside lane traffic on the German motorway, i.e. Audi A4 / BMW 320 lease cars. I actually ended up buying a Mito 1.6D new for the purpose of being a cheap Autobahn cruiser. And it does that still very well after almost 10 years trouble free motoring.

I know your post is a year old, but im considering to buy a Mito as car for the way to work. How is the fuel consumption for you? The one im looking at is the 135 hp automatic.

@@tobcio Hi Oz, My Mito is a Diesel, so that doe not compare with the 1.4 petrol engine. For what I know, this engine is very robust and can handle much more power than the 135hp version you think of. But it has average fuel consumption. If you are after something that is really frugal, this engine is not it. But it is reliable and fun.

    Hi Matt.
As you know im a Driving Instructor and use the MITO 1.3 diesel JTDM2 as my tuition car currently on my second one, it being one on the very last to come out of the showrooms. They are fantastic little cars, my current one has the speciale spec which includes leather seats and sunroof both a god send in these covid day of needing to clean the car between each pupil and also to keep good ventilation.
Between the two cars i have covered 140,000 miles and rising daily, all trouble free, never had an issue at all. Cheap to run, I could not be more pleased with the MITO! Spending all day in a car I have found the seats very comfortable and that important believe me.
The only issue I have had is that other drivers seem to like to crash in to the rear of the MITO.
When the car has been in for crash repair I have had a Peugeot 208 and a Vauxhall Corsa as the courtesy cars. On both occasions those have been the longest weeks of my life with my pupils continually moaning that they don't like this car and when will the MITO be back.
It's coming up to the time to change the car and OMG what shall I buy I don't know! seeing that ALFA in their infinite wisdom have abandoned this sector in favour of the SUV. Many of my pupils have gone on to buy the base Mito as their first car,
ALFA Romeo, what are you doing you need to feed in the buyers as Audi, BMW and other do and not Just hope you can poach buyers at a higher level!
Create you market and keep your customers ALFA Romeo!

Going to pick up my new (to me) MiTo tomorrow and absolutely cannot wait. It’s red and petrol as an Alfa should be with black leather and a sunroof.
I had a 147 previously (and a 146 before that) and it was simply glorious. Yes, it had its faults (having to take the bumper off to change the sidelight bulb), but the drive was exceptional. I’m hoping that the MiTo will feel like that, but with Bluetooth!
People who haven’t had one just go on about the reliability. Once you have one, you’re hooked. I don’t think there’s a mainstream car out there that has as much character or feels as special.
My other car is a 300bhp SAAB 9-5 and it’s great and I love it and will never sell it, but still, the Alfa ❤❤

  • @MitoRegister

Nice review, thanks! The MiTo remains underrated by many but is a fab car and has left a huge hole in the Alfa line-up. But there are some bargains to be had out there on a used MiTo and the later models are now coming out of PCP/finance terms and hitting the market. The MiTo is, and history will prove it to be, a proper Alfa and has introduced thousands to the brand. Thanks again - nicely done! P.S. the tiny, single cup-holder in the front is actually an oddment bin or there was optional ashtray - there are big cup-holders in the front door pockets ;-)

I live in France and own a MiTo. It's a fun car to drive through the foothills of the Pyrenees as well as driving the major highways. It's very resposive. Prior to buying the MiTo, I drove a MINI Cooper which is also a fun and responsive car. I admit the sound of the MiTo (the Alfa Romeo rumble) combined with the DNA make it a bit more fun to drive. Good drive and no problems apart from the Electric steering cutting out which was solved by a new battery. Alas, now throwing an intermittent code for fuel/air mixture imbalance, but only really noticeable at idle. Retiring abroad in 2 months, so hope it lasts out! I will certainly miss it! It was always a mystery to me why Alfa Romeo didn't follow up on this sporty looking little car (and Fiat, for that matter, on the punto). It certainly had its rightful place in the market. Glad to hear the driving experience is very different than that of the corsa or the punto, I remember when it was new that journalists tended to be somewhat critical about the Mito. There's a rumour apparantly that Alfa is planning a new Mito, based on the 208 and ... new corsa-platform. I'd like seeing it happen, Alfa could do with a few more sales ...

With my interest spiked I've just had a quite look to see what these things go for, and at a time when used car prices are generally very high the Mito seems to be a highly affordable in comparison to equivalent motors. This may be because people are still too scared of Alfa's to risk their money on one - or there is something very wrong with them! I don't really know, but the pretty little Alfa is worth a punt perhaps compared with something else that is both expensive and boring right now?

I think they did too many power outputs as I got confused (not difficult I have to say) by the engine choices. No opening rear windows is a bit of a no no...but then it almost looks like rear passengers are a bit of a no no, so maybe it doesn't matter much.....

The Mito is the only car I've owned which caused someone to speak to me in a petrol station commenting on how beautiful it was. Sadly it wasn't for me as any journey over 30 minutes gave me really bad back ache and was the worst car I've owned. The ride was rock hard in veloce spec. Cloth seats also hard. It did feel special and handled well until I put firestone tyres on it. With such sporty suspension do not cheap out on rubber or it will violently understeer. I did like the interior, definitely felt more special than most super minis. Not good that when you indicate you can easily switch off the headlights. DNA really worked. D best as it felt like holding onto an excitable dog which is fun! Either get adjustable suspension or smaller wheels than the 18s mine was on.

Amazing that the front parking sensors poke through the number plate. Presumably in Italy this does not happen as the front plate is quite a bit narrower than the UK or standard Euro ones.

Oh my goodness. That front overhang is terrifying. How much of the engine and transmission is in front of the wheels?
If you liked that engine in that car, have a go in a base model 500 abarth. Had one, sold it, now wanting another. Same 1.4 turbo with a cheekier exhaust. Always wants the red line and is definitely the better car. Far more fun, far more rortier, far more stupider to fire up.

    • @another3997
      @another3997 2 роки тому

The Abarth 500 looks and sounds nice, but is an awful thing to drive. Definitely style over substance. The steering felt like it was connected to the wheels with elastic bands, the suspension and damping were absolutely abysmal and selecting gears was akin to moving a stick of celery planted in a bucket of wallpaper paste. You either say "more rorty" or "rortier", but not "more rortier". The same applies to "stupid" and "stupider".

I'm currently on the hunt for a car for my daughter who has recently passed her driving test and the Mito was on my list, but she insists whatever car I do get for her is 5 door and these only come as 3 unfortunately meaning I'll probably end up getting her a Corsa., It's a lovely little car, much more interesting than it's main competitors.

They brought that French guy to financially save Alfa, but in the process he will completelly destroy the essence of Alfa. He already canceled the amazing Giorgio platform, that Alfa had invested so much money in, because it is not made for electric junk. He saidthat they will only be making electric appliances from 2025, and from 2022 will release one new model a year, all SUV/Crossdresser hybrid electric appliances. No Alfista will ever buy those white goods.

Well done Matt. I was waiting for you to acknowledge that the Grande Punto and the Corsa were an exceptional starting point for the Mito.
A great, solid quality package with lovely individual touches.
Everything that joins that little Club of MINI, Beetle, DS3, Audi A1 etc is a welcome choice for the consumer.
Even the Fiesta Vignale looks very unique and prestigious. Or do you disagree ?

Definitely a two + two sprogs on a long journey, although looks very easy for them to do the seat back kicking even with short legs, with a lot of "are we there yet?" At least it has some omph and decent enough handling to keep a youngish Dad or Mum happy. Does it suffer the Alfa woes? Stylish enough as well.

This reminds me of the 4C, especially the grill and the rear taillamps.
Nothing like a Russo interior! Although that armrest looks like it is out of a 500 and those rear seat is best for children.

Not a fan of the Mito (except for its style) but it was a good car to acquire new people to a brand that they may have never considered. That engine though, is a great unit. A friend of mine has a G.Punto 1.4 120 remapped and is properly fast!!
PS Just to say, a car i'd like to see in this channel is the "new" Delta, from 2008ish. I See them almost every day but a Matt's review would be great

Hi! So I just got myself an Alfa Romeo Mito and it's manual & diesel ( sorry if I'm not explaining properly, English isn't my first language). And I'm kind of a beginner with manual cars that are diesel and I can't understand how to start it properly, without my engine dying. It happens to me almost everytime and I still don't understand what I'm doing wrong. It's really frustrating because with my previous car it never happened to me, and it was a manual car, but on gasoline, not diesel. I sometimes do get it right and I start it properly, I just don't see what I do different.
What can I do? Since there's nobody to actually teach me in real life

I like the shape of the car. I am glad Alfa kept the classic shape of the grill triangle. It is instantly recognizable as an Alfa. Contrast with BMW who messed with the kidney roundels so much so that new Beemers have lost the plot. My only gripe are the headlamps which look like BMW Mini's. That car is near 20 years old now. Alfa stylists should have done better.

I own a Twin Air Sportiva and I think it’s a really brilliant little car. I don’t care if there isn’t a lot of room in the rear, I always sit in the front! The dna option is very clever, the a stands for all weather, but I’ve never had to use it. Such a shame that Alfa don’t make a replacement.

I have to say that despite Matt pointing out Alfa leather is generally hardwearing, this example appears to have suffered somewhat. It may point to being built down to a price, much like JayEmm found with the Giulietta he reviewed recently?

Nothing wrong with those seats. Alfa leather seats are as good as any. The ones on my 14 year old 164 V6 with 150,000 miles on way back when, were superb and just needed a spot of leather balsam three times a year to bring them back to top notch condition.

My daughter had one of these in the same colour but a diesel, it looked fantastic but the engine was not reliable, also the electric steering motor has issues they switch off at random times the only solution is to replace with brand new{ very expensive) or a rebuild which we had done for around £180, apart from that a good little car
