72 years later and England has still never beaten the USA in a World Cup.
This is true. The Yanks have put a hex on us, still it was nice to hear the old boy reminisce about that day. It happened 5 years before I was born so I only know about it from books and the odd bit of footage. That's football for you.
@@mnd1955 67 years?

Ok bro before the world cup everyone says France have never beaten England in world cup history ,but in 2022 France beat England for the first time and France creates history
And you see bro history is never be longer
I came here after the draw between USA vs England in Qatar world cup 2022. For me as an American it felt like a victory.
I was at the game. We played extremely tough.
We will see you in next world cup,and We will humiliate you on your home ground
It's called soccer not football 😊❤
Hopefully that we can repeat that success against them, or even upset them in 2026 even with Berhalter at the helm.
"They'd been given odds of 500-1 to win the tournament"
I bet Leicester would laugh hard at that
A Fire Inside The fact you refuse to believe it happened doesn't make it any less valid
to bad URUGUAY beat all the odds
500 to 1 was still too much. Despite this historical victory that we all remember, USA still ended up as the last place of its group in that Cup. They had zero chance of winning the tourney.
R.I.P Harry keough 1927-2012. u will be missed dearly
The country that invented football lost to the country it invented 😆
Yes, much like the American Revolutionary War... Underestimate the opponent, well... Btw I think the English are more suited to play just Scrabble.. Much fun and no injuries, my heaven.

Probably the greatest underdog result of all World Cups !! My granfather told me that all supporters in the stadium were euphoric with USA win.
England losing to Iceland 1-2 in 2016 got me here... LOL!
Iceland brought me here, too. I don't actually remember the match, I would have been six years old, but I read about it in soccer books mid-50s.
Talking about ice... in all fairness.. Great Britain(England) has an Olympic Gold in Ice Hockey... Don't ask me HOW in the name of (anything)..
England has more wins in football than anyone, but come the finals they don't turn up, nobody knows why??
@@douglassimpson5932 no they don't

Infamy infamy.....
They've all got it IN-FOR-ME....!!!!
I read a magazine article where they interviewed the goalkeeper of the US team that beat England. His real profession was funeral director, and he had buried a few of his old team mates.
Sir Curtis Seretse and the goal scorer of that match was never seen from again
bruh I am from Costa Rica and this video almost made me cry, world cup underdog stories are something else !!

When you look at the spectators, the rise in footballs popularity in America is obvious. Stadiums would barely get above 5.000 and now, getting 20.000 is easy. Also, 5 years ago, there were only 10 million football fans and now there is 40 million. You can't stop it, football is getting more popular in the states day after day.

A sad side: 14 years later the scorer of the game (he was American/Haitian) was arrested by the dictator Devalier and imprisoned in the notorious Fort Dimanche. (he was a relative of Devaliers major political opponent). Nobody saw him again...
Wut?
@johnathan
Joe Gaetjens, the goalscorer, was imprisoned by Haitian dictator Jacques Duvalier, who was pretty much like Mussolini. Gaetjens was imprisoned and most likely executed by Duvalier's cronies solely because Gaetjens's family spoke out against duvalier.

who's here after the world cup draw?? part 3 of this historic rivalry!
😁😁😁😁
@Ben Campbell well it’s something
@Ben Campbell It IS a rivalry. I mean, people consider Argentina and England rivals, and they're miles away with only the Falkland wars as their point of connection. America and England are culturally similar, have a lot of history against and with each other, and played a historic match in the World Cup. You can absolutely call this a rivalry.
it is results like this that make people love football, anyone can beat anyone.
72 years later England 🏴 never beat usa 🇺🇸 in the world cup
Just saw the movie “The Game of Their Lives” and it brought me here. Wish the movie was done better but it was still worthwhile.

This match wasn't just the biggest upset in WC or even soccer history. It was the biggest upset in the history of all sports.
Meh. England overestimated themselves as usual. There’s been many more shocking results in the WC. Even in the 1950, Uruguay beating Brazil was a bigger shock.

U.S. manager was Scottish. lol. an old rivalry in an unlikely setting
ahahh most of other countries trainer or manager mostly are from other countries rather that the original country it is not just the usa
you've missed my point. I was not having a dig at the usa. my point was I am glad the manager was scottish
Is it a fact?? What was his name??
@Jimmy Jimmy Yes he was, Bill Jeffrey, from Edinburgh. And the USA captain for this match was Scottish too (though perhaps by that point a 'naturalised' American, not sure). Can't you even do a quick Google search to find that out? I thought Yanks were meant to be superior.
* You must never overlook a rival over your shoulder. NEVER.
Biggest shock result of all time?....What about 1966, North Korea 1 Italy 0.....now that was an even bigger shock. At least the England players didn't come home to rotten tomatoes being thrown at them like the Italians did in 1966!
I know I'm a little late here, but I think it's considered a bigger shock because the USA/England game proved to everyone that massive shocks were possible. Like the video said, initially people could not believe that the USA won and called the reports on the game a hoax and as far as I'm aware no such accusations occured after the North Korean win. By the time the North Korea/Italy game came around, the possibility of a giant-killing was known to everyone because of the American victory, so the North Korean victory wasn't quite as shocking to the world. Had the Italy defeat occured before the England defeat, I think the Italy game would be consider a bigger shock because it would have introduced the real possibility of a World-class team being beaten by a group on unknowns. Of course, it was still a massive shock, but the general initial reaction was more along the lines of shock and anger, rather than the sheer disbelief and absolute denial that the USA win produced.
hawkinsss999 true that!
I would say USA beating England in 1950 is bigger - North Korea were actually a decent side (they went 3-0 up against a strong Portugal side until Eusebio took over) and Italy played that Korean match with 10 men for an hour as Bulgarelli was carried off injured and there were no subs back then.
@@hugodrax71 People (even in Italy) tend to forget about the Italians having only 10 men against N Korea. Also most experts even in England tend to forget about the 1950 game since it didn't have too many consequences for the England team. Because of the 1966 game the manager was sacked and whenever Italy come up against any "little" team in a major tournament they always talk about the possibility of "another Korea" happening again. Plus in 1950 there wasn't the mass media and tv that was around in 1966 to spread the gossip. Also in 1950 England could still make amends by beating Spain in their final game (they lost 1 0 ) while Italys defeat signalled immediate elimination.
NICKY29031977: Each edition of the major world cups has at least 1 ''unexpected'' or ''big shock'' result; and on those times, that was a big one :O In my own opinion, these are the most shocking results on each major world cup edition (and i ''embigness'' MY OPINION):

England is always so cocky about their national teams ability, but have never backed it up by facts except for that one time over 50 years ago.
True, there is even an England fan in this comment section hyping up the English squad and keep bringing up 1966.
Essa pra mim foi o maior vexame de uma copa do mundo até hoje!
The US also led Spain 1-0 with just 10 minutes to go.
English thought that they were the best. They only invented the sport. They were also known for their arrogance with the local brazilian population and press.American players were much more friendly and respectful
Harry Keough was a mail carrier as was Frank "Pee Wee" Wallace. Charlie Columbo was a dock worker, Gino Pariani was a meat packer and Frank Borghi was a funeral director. Gaetjens was an exchange student and short order cook.
You might be right. English supporters can be quite arrogant and unlikeable. I know. Because I live here in England. I wish I could live in US having visited there many times. People there seem to be more likeable than in England where I unfortunately presently live. I was more happy in US when I visited there last hopefully in future I will find a way to move over there from England where I am now, also I really like the American player in this video. He seems like a really likeable humble guy.

I coached a 12 and under youth soccer team one year. We were the smallest and youngest team in our group. One game, we played the best team. We only managed to get the ball on their side of the field one time and somehow scored the only goal of the game and won.
And England claimed they won the game
Foi a maior " zebra" de todas Copas do Mundo......comparável só a vitória da Coreia do Norte sobre a Itália em 1966.

Had America qualified for Russia 2018, they would have faced England again in the group stages.
They will face in 2022 instead.
If soccer were the most popular sport in the US from the beginning (late 1800s), the US would have won 6 of the 21 World Cups
Yeah, US was once really love this sport before (America's Golden Age of Soccer) that culminating with US team finished in 3rd place at 1st World Cup Uruguay 1930.

This was probably England's most laughable loss until Iceland beat them in 2016.
Tbf England were unlucky in 1950. As the American guy says England dominated and from what I’ve heard they hit the woodwork on numerous occasions. It was just one of those days like 1973 with Poland. The Iceland match England just played like a damp squib. So much worse in my opinion
Its now 2-1 when iceland beat england in the euros
Frankly, that rugby tackle by Colombo on Mortensen sounds disgraceful - and farcical.

The game of their life
One of the gems of the World Cup. And yet 60 years later, 2010, the USA draws England and Americans win the group ahead of the English. Football in America is on the rise, and in a big way. The rest of the world, specifically the English, hate the thought of it. However, you can't stop destiny so you might as well embrace it. America's ever-increasing competitiveness on the world football stage is great for the growth of the game.
Like it or not, when America gets it right, they will dominate like they have always been a top ten team. Right now we struggle with identity and also our youth programs. For a country with our population and resources, we will definitely find our way one day.
Pfffffffffft yeah sure

This story full of halftruths...
First of all, Brazil was the overwhelming favourite. Not only did they play at home, they also convincingly won the 1949 Copa America, beating Uruguay 5-1 along the way. Furthermore, the "US" team was comprised of players from at least four different countries: Scotland (McIlvenny), Belgium (Macca), Haiti (Gaetjens) and the US. There is no way that such a team would have been eligible to play in an international match today.
France was full of african players and won in 2018
To quote Megan Rapinoe: "wah, wah, wah!"
They all had U.S. passports so they were all eligible. Russia played with a Brazilian in 2018 and European countries have been playing with African-born players since forever.
