Jane Eyee is my favourite novel, and Fritz Eichenberg cover is my favourite. I would love to own a copy, but I think it’s quite rare and rather expensive. I just loved this video, Claudia!
As soon as I saw it, I had a little look around the online shops as well, but it's something like 300€ for an original copy, so sadly not something I'll ever own
I LOVE these cover videos ❤. What about one for "Dracula"? We need it, LOL! Wordsworth Classics's contribution is hilariously awful as always. The same for George Eliot's novels. 😂 Wordsworth Classics, we love you.
Oh this is fascinating!!! I have the Chiltern edition! I personally think the floral cover is pretty as a book cover! I’d love to see a video like this for book covers of George Orwell’s 1984!
Can you please do rating and commentary on book covers of Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, Henry James, Alexandre Dumas, and Ruthyard Kipling?
I have that first wordsworth edition yoy show. Its actually part of an oil painting called Rochester and Jane eyre by frederick walker from mid-late 19th century.
I have the Norton critical edition featuring a portrait from 1866 depicting what's basically a sad Jane and a 1963 Airmont edition which depicts Jane in a splendid hooded cloak with Rochester on horse in the background. Speaking of Wordsworth classics have you seen The Hunchback Of Notre-Dame cover?😂
@@SpinstersLibrary Astonishingly, it's not! It is absolutely the same concept, though: a young sultry slightly Spanish-looking Dorian next to his portrait. There's even a bit of his top hat sticking out of the frame, just like that painting! Tragically, it didn't make an appearance in your video
An interesting, fun video. In my opinion, the 1970s were the absolute nadir of ugly photographed paperback covers - in every genre! So I don't disdain the generic oil painting cover art as much as you. I was pleased to see the Deans & Sons cover. I collected those as a child in the 1970s - they were about 15p each for a hardback book, which was good value then. Some were abridged, and some were not. That's how I discovered Pride and Prejudice and even Barchester Towers! I'm always pleased to see them pop up, and I'm even a wee bit tempted to start collecting them. My mum threw mine out - she took the view that "paper causes fleas"
Oh no, that's a shame! I think my mum gave away at least some of my childhood books as well over the years. Maybe you should see how hard it is to get hold of these Deans & Sons editions.
I have that first Wordsworth edition. I've bought much nicer editions since then, but I can't get rid of it because it's completed marked up and annotated from my uni class
The Arabic one seems to show the man on top as Mason perhaps, Bertha's brother. The bottom man, lord knows? The Greek one gave me a laugh...she looks 10+ years married 🤣🤣 she's had enough of his sh*t 21:32 my favourite ❤
I love how that Italian 60s cover looks so badly altered. I might be mistaken because the lighting is too stark, the dress doesn't fit her properly, and the paper is damaged. But her left arm looks very off. As if they wanted it to look thinner and overlayed two shots of her or something
Thank you for not raving about the Chiltern edition. I feel like I’m the only one who thinks the Chiltern editions are aweful and tacky (because of the golden edges). I also think the Marjolein Bastion (or something like that) editions have nothing to do with the story.
I do still have tinnitus, though I only really notice it when there's no other noises around. I've not found it distracting when reading, because there's always some background noise (I live in an old house in the countryside, so if it isn't the neighbours' chickens, it's the pipes creaking or something along those lines). It sounds like your tinnitus is a lot more severe, maybe there are strategies that make it easier to ignore or reduce the impact it has?
Proverb: “Never judge a book by its cover.”
Claudia: “Oh no no no no we’re not having that.”
You know I'm right...
@@SpinstersLibrarylooking forward to more judgements on book covers 😁👍
I think in the Penguin Popular Classic Jane is probably trying to mend her wedding veil that Bertha shredded. Love Claudia's takes on cover art.
Ah yes, that makes sense! Thank you!
I'm loving these cover reviews! The George Orwell joke was appreciated 😂

Oh I think I have that very same Dracula Wordsworth edition on my bookshelf... it truly is a horrifying sight.

I really like these bookcover review videos 😊
Can you please do rating and commentary on book covers of Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, Henry James, Alexandre Dumas, and Ruthyard Kipling?
That’s my edition! The blue German one. It was not a cover buy for sure. I wanted Jane Eyre and that’s the one that was available.
Commiserations!

These are just *chef's kiss*
I know, right? So much fun to look through pages of covers
I tend to really like the Vintage Classics covers. I'd like to see some of the ones you think are fails. Another video idea?
Very original and fun approach. I do often choose a book by the cover. Thank you.

I hadn't but I just googled it - thank you for tha laugh, it's glorious 🤣
Would be an interesting series for your favourite novels! Very entertaining🤗
Thank you! I did one about Dorian Gray a few weeks ago, but I expect I'll do other books in the future
@@SpinstersLibrary Then, as a proud owner of an absolutely horrendous Wordsworth Classics edition of Dorian Gray, I'll be sure to check it out!
I suspect that one might just be in the thumbnail 🤣

Just the George Richmond portrait of Charlotte Bronte herself would be perfect.
Most of these covers aren't nearly gloomy enough.
Ah I think author portraits on the cover are a bit of a cop out, though that one is a beautiful drawing.
I love the 2009 Penguin version at 12:38 and also the purpley watercolor one at 13:45. Great video - thank you!!
Both gorgeous editions!
I really enjoy this video thank you ! 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏❤️

A fun episode. Just curious, what is your background in the theater?
None whatsoever
@@SpinstersLibrary Thanks for the response. It's just that your presentation is so . . . meticulous, might be the right word.
Thank you, that's very kind

The 1952 looks like a Nancy Drew novel
7:21 I like these covers but I'm a sad beige person
1:51 it's so gloomy
I hate movie covers.🤮 I like the first two and maybe two of the others.😏
