    I was wondering if it would hurt the worms at all? When I have trouble with mites I put a piece of watermelon skin on the surface and they flock to it. Then I rinse it and repeat population goes down

      @A-V  3 роки тому

      I was doing the rinse & repeat cycle for quite a while - and it helped reduce overall numbers but I think that I'm now at the point where I just want them all gone :)

      Applying Recommended does is advisable. Less than 5mL per litre. Usually it has always been stated that neem oil doesn't harm the beneficial insects. However, as per research it has been found that there has been some changes in the worms as well. Like thickening of the guts and thinning of the skin.
      As we know, Neem oil / neem leaf extract/ neem kernel extracts unlike other pesticides, affects the feeding of the pests thereby affecting the growth & development of the pest.
      Researches are ongoing, regarding this as Earthworms are beneficial insects. And it's especially good and feasible for poorer farmers who cannot afford others fertilizers.
      Spraying intervals should also be maintained. Over here our first approach towards insects pest management is Neem oil application.In my standing crops, I started with 1mL neem oil /1 L Water. Application with 15 days interval in the fields. On severe infestations people use 5mL. I think more than that even beneficial insects and pest will be affected.

      @@A-V I believe neem oil is banned in the UK Because it affects pregnant women I believe I have bought some in Thailand for my tomato plants as I have leaf miners leaving white tracks in the leaves. I also keep worms and have not yet had mite infection But your vlog helped As I had heard the neem oil has bad smell Looking forward to seeing the results Cheers

    The oil probably helps the worms slither! Especially the ANC! I remember once an episode of baby oil and a shower curtain in college! Those were the days!

    I got a fast food cup and clearly push the tiny flaps down into the hole where the straw goes. In the very bottom of the cup I glued a one inch square of NO PEST STRIP. I fill the cup with all sorts of bait for the mites and fruit flies. The food lures them in, they can't find their way out. The small space and that small piece of no pest strip surely kills anything that crawls in. I do not put this sort of cup on my worm bin. I actually place it in the basement window. When ever there is any kind of light shinning in the window the bugs go there.

    Neem oil might work, but, the mites have a life cycle and the neem oil isn't killing the eggs that are laid. On plants its usually applied every 3 day to stop the lifecycles.

    • @A-V
      @A-V  3 роки тому +1

      Good to know. Breaking the lifecycle seems like the only way to be rid of them. Thanks for watching!

      I’ve been using neem on my plants for years to treat aphids. They breath through their skin and the neem basically suffocates them when coated. Some will die but not all. Most will hopefully go away though. The only organic way to do away with the larva is to either freeze or boil them. If the problem persists I would harvest the worms and discard the bedding. This is why you have to be carful transplanting outdoor plants indoors, and why we use sterile seed starter mix for seedlings. I wouldn’t imagine the neem oil would hurt the worms but they probably would be sensitive the odor. They too breathe through their skin but they can survive under water so they can breath through various conditions. Also they’re bodies are covered in a mucus so that would keep the oil from interrupting their diffusion which is what allows them to breath.

    Oh dear! You want Neem Cake, not Neem oil. Neem cake is a dry product that comes from pressing the neem seeds for oil. Mix it in with the food or just add to bedding. There are studies and worms LOVE neem cake. It makes them fatter and and also increases the population. 😉

      Some people use neem seed meal & cold pressed neem oil as a way to reduce mites in their systems... so I assume that giving them neem should be OK. I even include neem seed meal in my worm chow. As with anything that you are trying for the first time with your worms, it is always best to do so in moderation - leaving space for the worms to get away from it if they dislike it. Once you've proven in small scale that it works OK it is usually safe to increase the usage amount. Good luck with it!

      I took the bait... & searched the web for the key words provided. I came upon an article that says the contrary to what was implied: "Use as much neem as you like, in whichever way you like. Neem can only do your earthworms good!" Original source link: www.discoverneem.com/neem-earthworms.html

      If you dry worms bin, the mite will look for moisture in the worm's body. That not good for worm

    I rushed off to buy some neem cake and discovered that “In the UK, plant protection products that contain azadirachtin, the active ingredient of neem oil, are illegal.” So that was an epic fail. Ordinary bread it is, then.
