Red and black, or red and small amount of ultramarine. This makes a chocolate brown. You can also use orange instead of the red, but it makes a lighter brown.
this was so useful. I was searching for something specific for watercolor but this is color theory and works for whatever medium you are using. Amazing tips. Thank you!
Thank you ..this totally helped me add a Bald eagle to one of my landscape paintings .the red and black made such a good thin wash for a dark brown body base color !! Thank you !!!
Color me amazed! Wouldn’t have guessed so many variations of brown could be created with primary colors. Thanks for the cheat sheet, too. I’m mixing browns tonight 🎈🤸♂️🎈🤸♂️🎈
This is so helpful, I'm experimenting with coloring polymer clay so I'm excited to see how this knowledge transfers between mediums 😊 this video was so relaxing before I knew it the whole video was over.
I'm so glad I came across your videos! They have an ASMR feel to them - I'm learning and relaxing at the same time! I hope we get to see more of these where you just talk through your process.
Thanks! I’m always surprised when people say they like listening to me talk. I have other videos like this, like this one where I paint a salt shaker is another one ua-cam.com/video/36HFDMWcLoA/v-deo.html
I was searching for how to make a chocolate brown as I'm painting (water colour) a brown curly coated retriever dog for my sister...this was perfect and it worked. Many thanks.
You have earned a new subscriber and very happy artist! Thank you for this. I usually mix 3 pts purple 4 pts red 1 pt orange 1 pt black to get a milk chocolate shade but I like your mix better, much easier with less steps. You're awesome!
Outstanding tutorial. I have 2 small 1/25 scale figures to paint with (enamel) flesh tone and medium dark brown hair, as well as a small cardboard box to paint but have no browns in my paint set. I wondered if I could mix a few browns using other colors without it looking like a cheap substitute. This video shows how easy it is to make an entire range of browns using primary colors and a few others. Now I don't have to go out and buy 6 shades of brown, I can just mix my own. Much thanks.
One day I'll actually try and make my own colors rather than using out of the bottle ones. I guess that is a perk of doing paint pouring like I do. The colors mix themselves. Loving these color mixing videos by the way. Have you tried putting together a cheat sheet info-graphic for us newbies? Maybe as lead magnet?
Thanks. Yes, I have an acrylic color mixing cheat sheet that you can download from the link below. I love learning and experimenting with color. I would think that color is probably a major part of acrylic pouring. Here's the PDF drawandpaintforfun.com/acrylic-color-mixing-chart/
thank you for the information, I have a question, is brown considered neutral color ? and is there an international standard that specify what is true brown or true red, etc, thanks for your time.
I ve just found your channel and I must say your content is very very helpful !! very well explained and filmed. I enjoy it very much. Thanks for making it
@@ChrisBreier Thanks Chris...I will, and I do have a short video of a greenish color that I thought I was gonna be happy with but now I believe a shade of brown or tan, maybe a combination to create a desert storm camouflage effect

Blue is easy: you can't go wrong with phthalo blue and ultramarine blue. I use Pyrrole Red but cadmium red is similar. If you've seen my other videos, you would know that I think magenta is the real primary color instead of red- so I also add Quinacridone Magenta to my palette. I used to use Hansa Yellow a lot but Golden discontinued it. Cadmium yellow would work too. Keep in mind that you don't need the exact same colors that I used in the video as there are other pigments that would work too. For convenience, you can also start with a brown like Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber and then adjust it to your liking.
Thanks for making this video. I'm trying to paint a violin and trying to achieve the right color blend to get the violin brown/red color. Do you have suggestions?
Finished wood is a complicated color because the stains are transparent and it allows the wood grain to show through. So if you use opaque paint to touch up an area it will probably be noticeable. But if you’re painting the entire violin a solid color, I would just choose a brown that you prefer. Brown is basically a dark red or orange. One of my favorite ways to mix brown is to add a small amount of ultramarine blue to red. Also, if you do paint the entire violin, I’m wondering if that would affect the sound quality.
@@ChrisBreier Thank you. Yes, it's not an easy color to achieve. Like you mentioned, I'm planning to add multiple layers of different tones of brown to get the texture. I'm painting a violin on canvas, not the actual violin.
Oops, I took that literally 😂 It sounds like you have a plan. As for the brown color, you could start with something like burnt sienna and modify it to your liking. That makes things a little simpler if you have to remix more of the same color later. Good luck!
i tried adding crimson red to ultramarine blue and it turned out that how much i tried, i could not get a brown and i only got magenta or purple shade. why is it so?
I'm not sure which pigments are in crimson red, but I some brands of Alizarin Crimson contain mostly quinacridone magenta so that may be why you're getting purple. My video about mixing pink covers some of the different pigments that brands use for alizarin crimson etc.
I'd just forgotten what two colors made brown, didn't expect such a useful and comprehensive video
can you tell me? I couldn't find it in the video
Red and black, or red and small amount of ultramarine. This makes a chocolate brown. You can also use orange instead of the red, but it makes a lighter brown.
