Why you should get a FIBER LASER

- In this video, Rob covers why we got ourselves a Fibre laser and why it's been an essential tool to have in the workshop.
A massive thank you to Cloudray for providing us with our fiber laser. If you want to get the same laser as us with $1000 Off, free Lightburn and lifetime tech support, click here 👉 mattestlea.com...
The competition is now closed. Thank you to everyone who entered :)

My name is Matt Estlea, I'm a 23 year old Woodworker from Basingstoke in England and my aim is to make your woodworking less s***.
I come from 5 years tuition at Rycotewood Furniture Centre with a further 1 year working as an Artist in Residence at the Sylva Foundation. I now teach City and Guilds Furniture Making at Rycotewood as of September 2018.
I also had 5 years of experience working at Axminster Tools and Machinery where I helped customers with purchasing tools, demonstrated in stores and events, and gained extensive knowledge about a variety of tools and brands.
During the week, I film woodworking projects, tutorials, reviews and a viewer favourite 'Tool Duel' where I compare two competitive manufacturers tools against one another to find out which is best.
I like to have a laugh and my videos are quite fast paced BUT you will learn a lot, I assure you.
Lets go make a mess.

Micron is
millionth of a metre
1/1000 of a mm
= 0.001mm
Not 0.0001 because that’s less than the wavelength of visible light.
Your laser lenses have (lambda)=1064nm as their operating wavelength, which is just over 1 micron or 0.001mm and is at the infrared end of the light spectrum.
The safety precautions you need for ablated metal dust makes me feel nostalgic for the old-fashioned sawdust from Matt.
Mistakes were made! I meant to say 0.1μm not 1μm 😂
I can honestly say the coins are indeed stunning and heavier than I imagined they'd be. If you aren't lucky enough to win the knife, they are well worth just buying one.
Thank you for the kind words!!
I remember when this channel was about hand tool woodworking
@@knarrs Yeah me too… that was the day before this video released? 😂 Did you miss the dining table extended cut?
tip for you, cleaning pass, specially on coins, then, magnetic tumbler, with stainless steel micro pins along with a little polishing compound, works a treat :)
Run a cleaning pass over tbe coin at the end to clean
I don't have need for a laser (doesn't mean I done WANT one!) but the video was interesting none the less. And seeing Rob's enthusiasm for the machine was great. Nice video!!
Thanks Kathy! We appreciate the kind words!
Thanks for the vid, even if it is older now. Could you show how you designed the coin? I am having trouble getting something to look like you have, with a background. The troeble with the videos that are already out there, ist that there are too many. So to find the one with what I want, seems very difficult. Thanks again, your vid helped me a lot. I unterstand better now.
Cleaning filters is definitely a job you want to do wearing all of the PPE and a really good vacuum. You've got a filter clogged with all of the nasty stuff from loads of cutting which you'll just be spreading around the workshop and into your lungs.
Absolutely! Our vacuum is very good but we do need to get into a habit of wearing the PPE for cleaning.
I use an ultra sonic cleaning bath to clean my engraved metal parts. Gust chuck them all together into the bath switch it on and 10 minutes later they are clean. Any parts that still have an odd but of bun on are fixed with a quick scrub with a toothbrush. Much less faff than a wheel.
The problem for us is that we use a polishing compound that seems to remain sticky on the metal even AFTER using the ultra sonic cleaner. Perhaps we didn't buy a good enough cleaner? 🤔
A downdraught table would be a nice upgrade, purely as it'd keep the metal oxides from depositing on the various lens'.
Also micrometer is a tool to measure in the micron range, a micon or micro-meter is a millionth of a meter (I won't comment on the 1um = 0,0001mm, it made me cry :P) But now I'm done with being mean, a nice overview of a commercial fiber laser, I never really got to play with lasers in the physics lab.
Good shout on the downdraught table. That might have to be a later upgrade. Thankfully while the lens' get a fair amount of build up, they do clean easily (and don't cost an arm and a leg if we ever needed to replace them).
As for the micrometer issue, it turns out that my original statement was wrong. I meant to say 0.1μm not 1μm!! I knew I had double and triple checked how many 0s to say! Whoops!!
Often thought that,
Rob is BETTER than Matt.
During calibration, after you're happy with the focus on the business card, why not place the business card underneath the coin, thus raising the surface of the coin to the exact same height as the business card during calibration?
Now THAT is genius. That would ensure perfect alignment. Great idea!
Thanks for the breakdown! 🤔 I’ve got a question: 🤨 I found these words 😅. (behave today finger ski upon boy assault summer exhaust beauty stereo over). I don't know what they are. What should I do with them? 🤷♀️
We've got no idea where you got those words from 😂
@@MattEstlea2 Well this is crypto currency wallet password phrase. And a lot of bots spam it on youtube, cause there is scam for crypto with it)
Video is nice, like
1 micrometer = 0.001mm, not 0.0001mm. Still extremely small, but you added an extra zero. [1:20] ETA: The Cloudray website says it's accurate to ±0.1µm, which actually is 0.0001mm.
Yep, thanks for clarifying. I knew what it was meant to be from the website but clearly I misspoke during filming. 👍
Hi Rob
Is the competition only for patreons ?

All working!
I feel seasick after some of the camera zooming.
Out of curiosity, whereabouts did you have an issue within the video?
All subscribers to chis channel know that Rob is BETTER than Matt. And that settles that!
The link to the form doesn't work. Apparently I don't have the necessary rights to see the form.
That being said,
Rob is BETTER than Matt.
The competition is working now! 😅
Rob is BETTER than Matt.
You smokin’ too much of that grass
But he's not wrong 😉
you do not need to change the lence settings every time, just create another laser profile named lence 100*100 etc and switch them in lasers menu
Rob is BETTER than Matt.
Great point! Clearly we didn't look hard enough for that option. That's going to be a time saver!!
