BTW thats during the bending. once its bent i turn my blanket down to about 225-250 and let it sit for 15 minutes. then it cools down to room temp. i bring it back to 225-250 for 5 mins, then cool again.
I'm in the UK and got mine from Omega Heating (an American Company) or try looking at Luthier Mercantile International Inc. who do the lot, plans, wood, heat blankets. I used this method to bend the sides for an Oud and it worked fine. Good luck.
LMII is where I bought the metal sheets. I had to buy the blanket from a distributor I can't find them on the internet. Ebay has them from time to time.
Awesome and very useful :) I just have a question, you heated the wood with the heating blanket... hahah THATS GENIUS but what kind of blanket do you recomend?? and another one, why don't you just use some kind of clamps instead of springs??? well that's all for me thanks a lot for this video ;) really!!!
Very good video. Thanks for posting. I bent some cypress sides for my first flamenco guitar I'm building using same setup, but ended up with a lot of spring back. I did not leave the heat on for as long as you did, do you think I should re-heat and bend again and let it "cook" a couple hours?
Hi, Good video, very helpful. Currently bend my sides with an electric bending iron. Interested in this technique though....could you tell me the thickness of your metal slats ? Many thanks. Cheers.
Hey, I'm currently trying to build my own guitar. I bought a heating blanket aswell, and I was just wondering if you have a temp controller aswell. Or did you just plug in the blanket to an outlet? Thanks.
I know this is an old topic but if someone knows where to get the steel sides please share the info I dont like the steel that I use and here in Melbourne it seems that spring back type of steel is not available.
+BigDGuitars - Thanks! I will try that for the next set, this first one came up okayish the curves have small parts that are a bit flat I guess that I will try to smooth them up on a heating iron.
+Ric Zalewski The folks at LMI are good people. The owner of Allied Luthrie used to own LMI. Allied Luthrie only sells wood. They are both located in the same part of California.
Good lord, no! If you left the heat on for 24 hours, you'd have charcoal. He left the heat on for 20 minutes, and turned the power off. He left the wood on the form for 24 hours with the power off. I've built molds that I put the sides in to cool so I can bend the other side. We often have a bunch of sides to bend one after the other, so we have to pop the sides off as soon as we can.
Excellent video. This video has given me the courage and know-how to start Building guitars. Thanx

You could install a longer threaded rod on your clamp so you could keep turning in one go.

what kind of wood did u use?
looks like maple
Bro, the more exotic a wood is... the less common it will be. Similar to the case of the more black something is... the less white.
I'm thinking if you search on Google, you'll find a blanket. !!!!!
as for the jig, I'd like to find a set of premade. ones
This method presumably takes two days, why not make the jig twice as wide and do both sides at once.
the piece of wood doesnt fit
