Great stuff JeepRN. Thanks for the post....Damn....8 years ago. Just got my first V/P 3.0 and I am working on an Overheating issue now. I suspect the Thermostat right now. But man it's frustrating cause this is my 1st week with this boat. I had the Mercruiser 3.0 in my 1986 FourWinns Freedom 16 and NEVER Had any trouble with it, except normal wear and tear. 33 years! About 300 hours of FUN IN THE SUN! Get the new one and BAM! Anyway. Gonna keep the faith and figure this thing out!!!!

Good work. Wish mine had a serpentine belt system. I'm swaping my 3.0LX into a boat that had a 3.0GS. Quite a difference between the two. I like volvo's raw water pump being in the boat, but man now I have to change oil pan, oil pump, etc because the hose goes under. Again nice clean work and a great job. Thanks for video.

You can also use a wet/dry vac on the pump end of the hoses to suck any broken impeller vanes out.

Dude, ok so I watched this video after purchasing a 2001 glastron sx 195 with the volvo penta 3.0, was out on the lake today and it ran hot, unhooked the hose and low and behold a fuckin rubber blade clogging the flow, pulled it out and made it back safely to the dock, I'll be replacing the impeller now but without this video I would have been fucked! THANKS!!

Great video. I was just dead on the water last weekend ( for the airshow) I'm thinking because of the raw water pump. I afraid of where I'll find the blades! Volvo Penta 4.3 GL

Super helpful. Having same issue, will remove soon and give an update. My volvo will cool down quick when idling but after about 5 mins w.o.t. start to heat up.

Our motor got extremely hot so I opened the housing of the pump and the impeller was completely crap. Almost every blade was gone. No waterflow at all.
The Impeller in your video looks just brand now to me when I compare it to mine :'D
    Jup, extremely bad, I know...

THis engine was made here in Brazil too, but in 2.5 form so it dont need balancer shafts, and all pumps were by gears, not by this pulley and tensioner setup, so dont need maintenance. The balance shaft (in the later iron duke) and the stupid plastic parts take away the legendary reability of this engine, its really a shame.
Another difference looks like the cam, for marine user, the peak power is at 3200, in automotive form, it is at 4400-4800.

Thats the 1st place I would check. Make romove the whole pump and check it. Then check the lines going to the secondary pump. Check impeller. Hmmm

I just bought boat with this engine (2005 3.0 GL) but I have few issues... Acceleration lag, engine stalls at gear quite often - can be solved but adjusting idle speed to 1200 which had previous owner and thats crazy high imo.. whats normal idle speed for this engine? and last but not least i get only like 4 - 4,2k wot rpm..
    Any thoughts ? :)

Volvo totally screwed up this cooling system! Always check for impeller blade in that small hose coming from the back of the thermostat housing. And take the big circulating hose off at the thermostat housing to look at the thermostat. It might be held open with impeller blade. Make sure all hose clamps are very tight, lots of pressure for no reason. Terrible design with other issues too.
