    Bill Walsh means a lot of things to a lot of people. For many of us who got into football after he passed, this sort of insight (not to mention the rest of the West Coast videos you produce) is just special. Thank you for your channel and all that you do.

    Great review. As a 49ers fan, it was great to finally see actual pages of this. I hope one day the book is reprinted or released digitally. It's very easy to see why Bill got burnt out. That page with just the install of offense looks like a nightmare. As fans what we see on television is just a small chunk of all of the hours, and hours that the coaches and players put into the classroom. I feel like that is the real "game". And even after all that preparation, things still might not work out for you on Sundays. Also with little long-term job security, it's remarkable folks don't go mad. Maybe Bill was wise to get out after winning Super Bowl 23, especially with the front office putting the clamps on him. Anyway, thanks for doing this one.

    Couldn't agree more. I've been fortunate to access this book last year and it's awesome. As coach O'Sullivan said, it's a dense lecture and every paragraph is meanfull and impactful. Really worth the hunt for it. All respect for my man Bill Walsh

      I was looking at early cut ups of zone plays from the 1980s (Cleveland Browns) but they are cut ups, not a game. I got a lot of great stuff from Bill Williams in Poway, CA and his coaching association. J.T might know the Williams - they have a lot of NFL film going back decades.

    Really interesting video, especially the balance between putting in the hours and burning out as I'm coming from an industry that is notorious for both (video game development). Also appreciated the observations on the use of military quotes. Maybe our idea of what good leadership looks like is evolving.

    I agree that there was a level of burnout, but you also didn't mention the other stresses that he had as well. In every video on the topic I have seen, Carmen Policy and others said that Eddie D. would "fire" Walsh one day, only to reverse his decision the next, or later that same day. Having a boss like that which didn't have the same level of faith in you that, say Robert Kraft has shown Belichick, has got to take years off of you as well.
    Kep in mind that going into the 1988 season, Walsh was the guy who:
    *NFL legend and former boss Paul Brown tried to black list and sabotaged many potential landing spots
    *Won "only" two super bowls while suffering crushing losses to the Redskins in the NFC title game in 83, then getting bounced out of the playoffs in their first games three years in a row (85, 86, and 87) despite even being the #1 seed in 87.
    You have to understand that finally making it to the top for that third time was reason enough to sail into the sunset... only to then realize in retrospect that the team he had worked so hard to build was on the verge of a three-peat and remained competitive for a decade after his retirement, making the NFC title game in 92, 93, and 97 in addition to the 94 win.
    Bill Walsh still had a lot of coaching left in him, but I would have to think Eddie D. wore the man out as much a the scheduling did.

    • @Aaron-kj8dv
      @Aaron-kj8dv 4 роки тому

      Yeah and we kind of saw the same with Harbaugh where after 5 years the relationship was so toxic. he had to leave even though he made a Superbowl.
      I also love reading about players who hate their coaches so much they retire. I think Joe Thomas said he almost did when Mangini was the coach of the Browns. It's crazy how bad leadership can ruin an organization, but the NFL is kind of like a failsafe where no matter how bad you are at your job the owner will ALWAYS make money where in other industries they just go bankrupt.

    • @astrostar49
      @astrostar49 4 роки тому

      Yes. I was thinking of this as well. If Eddie D didn't bring the heat on Walsh so much, Walsh probably would have stayed longer. But he probably made the right call to retire a champion. Especially after that rough 1988 season where it really looked dark at times, along with being stripped of his presidency. Eddie should have backed off. As if Walsh didn't already have enough shit to deal with.

    Recently discovered your site and love it! Question about "putting in plays" in training camp. Are typically most of them repeats from prior years so the learning curve isn't so bad and (at least on the first day) is everyone standing there with their playbook before running the play? Thanks!

    Why can’t they get this thing on Audible or Kindle

  • @leftcoastkid24
    @leftcoastkid24 4 роки тому

    I think a lot of the overthinking that Walsh would sometimes do comes down to the high amount of anxiety he dealt with. As someone who has suffered from Generalized Anxiety Disorder all my life I feel pretty confident he would have been diagnosed with that today and those issues were not handled very well back then and there was also a stigma against mental health issues back then, especially in sports.

    $550 for used books ---- $1,000 for new book
    So, why don't they reprint the book if there is that much demand?
    Great review.
    Tom Brady was at a Bill Walsh 49ers workout before the 2000 draft and Walsh saw nothing.......BUT, they were looking for a mobile QB to backup Young, so they drafted a goat farmer instead of the GOAT.
