    196Hz has a Bonham sound.

Dr Rob! This series is amazing. I’ve played drums for 30 years but tuning has always seemed like the dark arts to me. I tried my best but I’m kinda tone def with stuff, I find it very difficult so if the drums sounded ‘OK’ I would just leave them and tend not to touch them as much as possible. Your tuition and app are awesome and have completely inspired me to revisit this entire area and start over, thank you. One question tho on this video specifically:- when dealing with the resonant head do you normally remove the snares? I noticed here in this video you left them on (and am wondering if you did that for brevity because you were filming - I do a lot of training videos in my line of work so I feel you on that one). I have always removed them when tuning snare drums, but as explained above I barely knew what I was doing most of the time! Thanks again in advance. Luke

Hi Luke - that's great that you find it all valuable, thanks so much for your comment! Yes, I always do the main tuning with the snare wires off, because that allows the drumhead to vibrate smoothly and gives a pitch that you can judge more clearly with your ears or with the app. If the drum's upside down for fine tuning of the resonant head, I'll loosen the snares right off and slip a stick underneath at 90 degrees, so it holds the wires off the resonant drumhead, but they don't need fully removing from the drum. But when manipulating the RTF, I'm not assessing the resonant head directly, I'm just using its tension to change the sound of the drum when I hit the top head - so if I know I want to loosen the top and tighten the bottom, then I'll do this whilst predominantly listening to and measuring the sound of the drum when hitting the top head, i.e. as it is played in the kit. Hope that helps, cheers, happy drumming!

How do you tune the reso head? You tune the batter head from low, to a G, then past an A then back down but you don't do any note on the reso? I don't understand...

    Great video!
    1. What would be the ideal batter and reso Hz ranges?
    2. What effect does a tighter reso/looser batter have, and vice versa?
