135 is a FANTASTIC portrait length for headshots. Has the nice "compression" of a longer lens without such a long working distance to the subject. One of my favorite focal lengths! I owned the ZA 135/1.8 with the Sony a900 many years ago... also a fantastic lens. I still think that combo was one of the best I've shot for faces, actor headshots, and high-school senior portraits.
The Canon 135 was one of my favorite lenses so I am all about giving this one a try. It looks awesome. I do like that 135 is a little bit of a challenging distance. It makes shooting with it fun.
I am watching this late in 2019. In October 2019 I sold my HUGE Nikon kit: D5, 10 prime lenses, and made enough to finally make the jump to Sony. I looked at Sony a couple years back, but they just didn't have the glass. This fall, with the announcement of the D6 and the Sony A92, I knew the value of my D5 was about to tank, so I put it all on eBay and it all sold over the course of a few weeks. I bought a Sony A 7 R 4, and my three favorite focal lengths: 24mm f/1.4 GM, 85 f/1.4 GM and the 135 f/1.8 GM. So pleased with these futuristic lenses that I don't miss my Nikon f/1.4 G lenses AT ALL. No real interest in any Ziess Batis or Sonnar glass. GM all the way. I don't think I really need any other glass now for quite a while. I mean, I do kinda want the 90mm macro, but my entire Sony kit now travels everywhere with me. I also picked up the Profoto A1X and the new Sony shotgun microphone. I love this gear.
@@shawndean100 I'm torn between it and the 70-200 GM. I'd love to have the 135mm but the versatility of the zoom means I should probably have that first for events.
I know this video is about Sony's new 135 f1.8 but you talked a bit about the 24mm f1.4. With that, you were in an astrophotography video a while ago and I THINK I saw you carrying an Otus 28 f1.4. If correct, how would you weigh the images captured from the Sony 24 against the Otus? Why do I ask? Because I own the Otus but not the Sony 24. Thanks in advance.
I wonder how this would work in concert settings with low light. Not arenas, but small, dark, coffeehouse venues which is the kind of thing I tend to shoot.
That would be pretty sweet. I used my Sony 85mm 1.8 at a metal concert few weeks ago. First time shooting in a setting like that. It worked really nicely, but the extra reach would definitely be a plus. I have the 70-200 f4, but it would have been quite slow for the low light setting.
I shoot lots of bands with Sony 85mm 1.8 and I have been waiting for this lens to come out so I can get a better reach when I am farther back. Seeing how fast the focus is it will be great for dark rooms.
The 135mm focal length combined with the F1.8 would be a stretch you would be looking at an ISO of 3200-12800 & a shutter speed of roughly 1/125thsec to get motion free images!, unfortunately low light is where F1.4 shines with cleaner ISO!. You would not want less than an A7Sii, A9 or A7iii of a body!.
In my good old days of CT18 35mm film , I used to sware by my 135mm and 50mm primes. The Sony 135mm is a long time comming, looking forward to play with one.
I feel the same, those last 3 lenses (400, 24, 135) from Sony are just incredibly fast, which means they actually produce better images than the competition, simply because fewer shots are out of focus.
Very helpful video. Thank you!! I'm slowly migrating from the Canon world, and primarily shoot high school senior portraits. Canon's 135mm is one of my go-to focal lengths for the closeups and the full body shots. Switching to Sony has been great, but they haven't had too many options in that focal range. Excited to try it!!
Good review - 135mm not seeming an obvious focal length for portrait, you certainly made a case for it. Just wondering what circumstances that length might present an issue?? Keep up the good work.
Ted, I own this lens and love it-love using it, love the incredibly fast eye autofocus, love the image quality, but I have one serious problem with it. My poor studio feels tiny when I’m using it! I need to move stuff around so I can back up enough to get anything fuller than a head shot. Now I know what you’re saying -get a new studio! And I do have alternative indoor spaces in which I don’t feel so restricted with this lens. But do watch your rear end when you’re shooting in restaurants or at receptions, because this lens is so much fun that you want to move around!
Thnx Ted for the video. I got this lens for my a7R IV and it's an awesome one. The focal length does require a bit of space, but it's worth it. Alongside the 85mm F1.4 GM that I also own, the 135 is a perfect companion.
This lens is mental. Sony and panasonic are knocking out absolute belters, even if their price is a bit much, while we have to struggle and go with "ifs" and "buts" to find positives about Nikon and Canon new releases.
I got MY 135 1 day ago and I am aaaamazed... the price - here in Germany - of 1.750 € killed me almost, buuuut what a performance & quality. I bought it with high expectations and I am more than satisfied. I‘ve compared it with the Sigma... what can I say!? The price difference is worth it! That thing is magic!
The cat eye bokeh shape is disappointing but I guess that unless there are single points of light towards the corners, it really doesn’t matter. It could produce swirly bokeh though
What I really want from Sony is a 105mm 1.4 GM. On the fence about Sigma's despite loving the images it produces, because of the size and weight. I know Sony's offering, if they were to make one, would be lighter, a little more reliable in low light, and produce images on par, if not better than the Sigma. Especially where bokeh is concerned due to there likely being 11 aperture blades. Would really love to hear this announcement from Sony before the end of the year.
I thinkTed brings up a good point about the GM lenses being something special. If you watch comparisons between FE 85 1.8 and 1.4GM it almost looks as if, pixel for pixel, the 1.8 is sharper. But the GM gives the skin this smooth, warm and creamy look. It has character! Sure Sony can make a $600 razor-sharp lens, but they’re also producing glass that has personality and character.
I was just going to post that I recall THE portrait lens as being either an 85mm or a 100mm. I recall the 135mm being seen as a lens that was both too short and too long to be an ideal lens for anything.
Although I have a few friends who swear by their Canon 135 1.8, I've never really tried it out. I find that I'm always struggling to get further away from my subject with just the 85. Would be neat to check it out (at least the Canon one for me) to see how I adjust to the extra distance.
Hi Ted, I don't agree about the 24mm GM, because it uses the DDSSM, (Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor), AF System. (The 24GM is not on my wishlist.) The 135GM, (Not including the 400GM, or the 600GM), is the first Sony lens to use the XD Linear Motor System. (This is an amazing lens and is definantly on my wishlist.) As far as I know all the G-Master lens since the 135GM use this new focusing system. These new G-Master Lenses are Amazing; I plan on owning the 35GM (already own this one), 50GM f1.2, a refresh of the 85GM f1.2, a 100GM f1.4 (Not made yet), and this 135GM. I plan on owning all prime lenses, with the exception of the 12-24mm f/2.8 G-Master, because that is just to amazing of a lens to not own. Talk to you Later, Mathew
Interesting lens... although I believe that 135mm is a bit on the long side for portrait photography. But, then, YMMV. I also just read today that Sigma announced a bucketful of new Art lenses (including a 135mm f1.8) in L mount. That didn't take long...
FINALLY.. we get to see some of your images,,,Wonderful stuff and WAY too infrequent,,This lens looks like a winner. I'm glad you commented on the 85 Sony G as well.. I recently did a video shoot where we leased an A7II and had the Rokinons as part of the rental "kit". The rental manager had just gotten in a 24mm 1.4 G and offered to let me use it as well.. It was amazing.. then we ended up doing reshoots later and the Rokinon kit was out on another lease ,, but they had picked up the 85 G Master and we were given a nice deal on that. I was just remembering how the word "clunky" echoed through my head as you said it on the video,,,The image quality was very good,,but we did all manual focus set-ups,,(which I do about 70% anyway),,and it looked great,,but very excited and encouraged to see what this new beastie will do in the wild,, Thanks again for great info and commentary,,And post more of your work!!
Is it just me or the transition between the focused areas to the blur seems a bit harsh? The background blur is gorgeous no doubt but I find those transitions way to harsh
Just ordered mine if it’s everything everyone says I wouldn’t mind lugging it around I wanted something different from the 50 and 85 great review and assessments thx!
I love the 135mm focal length, I have the Canon !35mm f2 and the Fuji X 90mm (135 equivalent) f2, I'd be very interested to try this Sony lens , the focus speed sounds amazing. Thanks for the video Ted.
Just started watching your channel and am most impressed with your precision and no fluff.he 85 because I bough5 5he Batis 85 then the Batis 25, I was wondering if you had an opinion on the difference between Sony 85G and the Batis 85. I am now in a position to buy one lens and It's going to be between the 135 or the 70-200 GM. i'm thinking I will get more out of the Zoom, i do not own any zooms, I subscribed, from Canada Eh!
I need a GM 35 or 50mm, I don’t understand why Sony doesn’t release those 2, the system really lacks of them, other focal length is not necessary for now.
I just started shooting with the awesome Fuji 90mm f/2 and after watching this I am blown away - that the Fuji can be had for only $700! I would love for anyone to present an objective comparison, will a paying customer be able to tell the difference (outside of low light) or not? The Fuji requires a little bit of hand-holding discipline but that Sony is much heavier, it is going to be much harder to manage during a shoot. PS. Not a hater of Sony or full-frame at all.
i really love working with my Sony FE 85mm 1.8 - still best value/money IMO. would also really wish for something equivalent to that in the 35mm and maybe 105-135 range (or all ranges for that matter). still, the FE 24mm 1.4 is already on my wishlist, as well as this 135 will land there until i feel the need or have some cash to drop on it :D since i am mainly doing portrait style work, i am very intrigued by the look this new 135 lens offers; but that also is true for the 24mm ;)
The only thing that I'm seeing that I don't like about this lens is the Bokeh from f/1.8 to f/2.4 , it's "Football" Shaped. I know it is perfectly round at f/2.8, but with 11 Rounded Aperture Blades, you'd think that it would be perfectly round at f/1.8 even more so than at f/2.8. (Still learning though)
@@Warren3327 Yes and no. The 100 STF is T/5.6 because of the STF ("smooth trans focus") which means it has an element that feathers the out of focus areas at the expense of two stops of light-hence a T-stop of 5.6. The 100mm STF has round bokeh balls because the front element & lens size are so large compared to the aperture, which would be true even if the STF element were removed. The difference in absolute aperture size of the two lenses (100mm f/2.8 is ~36mm vs. 135mm f/1.8 is ~75mm) is significant. So if they've got similarly sized front elements, which one will have mechanical vignetting? Stopped down to an aperture of similar size, the 135mm will also have perfectly round balls. To get the same effect wide open would require ... well, I have no idea how big those front elements would have to be but ridiculous most likely.
I wasn't interested in this 135mm and still not, but just wanted to watch some AOP content. But, I am hyped for that 24mm GM and you did this to me, with that Andromeda. Now I am saving to afford it for my a6300 :D
I'd rather use an 85mm lens where if youre cramped for space to take a portrait, youre not having issues moving back into a wall to get a focused image of the face. Plus the price point for a G master lens is too high for me. Its nice, but I can get away with more using a vintage lens at the expense of foresaking Auto focus. Just my 2 cents.
The 24mm 1.4 GM and The 135mm 1.8 GM are GREAT lenses !!! So Sony keep those GM primes lenses comming... Wish for 55mm GM, 300 4.0 GM 400 4.5 GM and more... oh yeah and a macro GM without stabilizer ! The lens hood for the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM should have been much more rugged. I wish for 1.4x and 2x teleconverters for this lens !
Focusing speed is like "Beakon B10 has the fastest autofocus in the world (asterisk: among Beakon B1x lineup) that is 0.1s (asterisk: when it is that bright you can't open your eyes) (asterisk: when using the kit lens) (asterisk: with a battery grip)" What if they just turned off the lights in just one location to test real indoor conditions?
As always, wonderful video. The only thing that confuses my ear every time I hear it is that you use the name Sony as a plural grammatically. Why is that?
I'll stick with the Sigma 135mm 1.8 I got off eBay for $700, that's just about 1/3 of the price of this new Sony. I'll save $1,200 and have slower autofocus (though still have eye-AF with the MC-11). IMO don't get this lens unless you have money to throw around or need fast autofocus. Christopher Frost photography claims the Sigma is one the sharpest lenses he's ever shot, and he's tested hundreds of lenses; in this case you're not missing out on optical quality by saving money, just having your glass be "native."
@@danny50582 I use a Pentax Limited pancake 70mm on my K3, equivalent to a 105mm on a full frame camera. Invisibly small and light weight but built like a tank. Beautiful out of focus areas, and more sharpness and insane resolution than any human eye needs. ...and I'm speaking from experience, as a professional portrait photographer shooting some of the world's best athletes for many many years, shooting with Hasselblads and Phase One Backs. Some of these lenses today are just overkill, and pumped up with Marketing hype.

would also really wish for something equivalent to that in the 35mm and maybe 105-135 range (or all ranges for that matter).
still, the FE 24mm 1.4 is already on my wishlist, as well as this 135 will land there until i feel the need or have some cash to drop on it :D
since i am mainly doing portrait style work, i am very intrigued by the look this new 135 lens offers; but that also is true for the 24mm ;)
I;ve sold and traded other prime lenses but I will NEVER let this one go.
Please give us a 35mm G Master!
Got the old one for A mount I’m good
The only thing that I'm seeing that I don't like about this lens is the Bokeh from f/1.8 to f/2.4 , it's "Football" Shaped. I know it is perfectly round at f/2.8, but with 11 Rounded Aperture Blades, you'd think that it would be perfectly round at f/1.8 even more so than at f/2.8. (Still learning though)
The aperture blades have no effect on the image and bokeh balls when wide open, the inner wall of the lens itself becomes the aperture.
@@snodgegrass8 Thank you, now I know. So if they "Fixed" that issue, it would be more like the 100mm STF f/2.8 with a *T5.6
To get the same effect wide open would require ... well, I have no idea how big those front elements would have to be but ridiculous most likely.
can we use this lens with teleconverter 1.4x
no I reckon ! Canon 135mm f2 can use teleconverters
Yes I could use a 135mm Lens for Portraiture!
Thanks Ted
I wasn't interested in this 135mm and still not, but just wanted to watch some AOP content.
But, I am hyped for that 24mm GM and you did this to me, with that Andromeda. Now I am saving to afford it for my a6300 :D
I'd rather use an 85mm lens where if youre cramped for space to take a portrait, youre not having issues moving back into a wall to get a focused image of the face. Plus the price point for a G master lens is too high for me. Its nice, but I can get away with more using a vintage lens at the expense of foresaking Auto focus. Just my 2 cents.
Oh boi
Sony you making me feel broke
The 24mm 1.4 GM and The 135mm 1.8 GM are GREAT lenses !!! So Sony keep those GM primes lenses comming... Wish for 55mm GM, 300 4.0 GM 400 4.5 GM and more... oh yeah and a macro GM without stabilizer ! The lens hood for the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM should have been much more rugged. I wish for 1.4x and 2x teleconverters for this lens !
Looks killer, though I wonder if a 105mm might have been even better.
105mm f1.4 is just perfect :D
Uhhhh!!!! Thats a big piece of glass!
Sony, now make mk2 versions of the 85mm and 50mm GM lenses!
The girl in the thumbnail tho 😩😍
Focusing speed is like "Beakon B10 has the fastest autofocus in the world (asterisk: among Beakon B1x lineup) that is 0.1s (asterisk: when it is that bright you can't open your eyes) (asterisk: when using the kit lens) (asterisk: with a battery grip)"
What if they just turned off the lights in just one location to test real indoor conditions?
Thank you ) Jennie
Reminds me of the Nikor 135 f/1.8 - Excellent with a Fotodiox adaptor on my Fuji X-T20
As always, wonderful video. The only thing that confuses my ear every time I hear it is that you use the name Sony as a plural grammatically. Why is that?
I have the 85 GM, I would say yeah the autofocus on that is not that good, even on A7R3. Compared to 2470 GM, it falls behind by a lot
Don't understand what happend with youtube with subtitles... I mean... russian?!?
135mm is the classic portrait lens, so no wonder...
The Nikkor 105mm f1.8 or the Nikkor 85mm F1.4 were the classic portrait lenses when I shot film.
oh my FoMO!!!
Not going to lie... I thought that thumbnail was Miley cyrus 😂
A portrait / sports lens my be .
I wonder how much better can YOU get from using this lens or it is just bragging rights? What about other cheaper options?
Great lens.. but the price, most of us Filipinos cannot afford that,so expensive.
I'm sure it's a sharp optic but man, what happens to your shoulders after a few hours of holding this thing up?
you get a good workout and hence, stronger shoulders
@@danny50582 I use a Pentax Limited pancake 70mm on my K3, equivalent to a 105mm on a full frame camera. Invisibly small and light weight but built like a tank. Beautiful out of focus areas, and more sharpness and insane resolution than any human eye needs. ...and I'm speaking from experience, as a professional portrait photographer shooting some of the world's best athletes for many many years, shooting with Hasselblads and Phase One Backs. Some of these lenses today are just overkill, and pumped up with Marketing hype.
Maxime why carry this big chunk of glass for 2 grand if you don't have to? Where's the value?
How round are the bokeh balls?
Looks very impressive optically, but I have to ask...how's the skin on the knuckles of your right hand? 😋 😉
You have a younger Doppelgänger, Josh from Flite Test...check him out.
105 vs 135
At 2 grand it better be good.
135 is a bit long. I want a 105/1.4 and sigma has that already. Then there is the Mitakon 135/1.4....
