I spent the last thirty-five years collecting records. This song is probably the most special, accomplished, poetic, inspired, numbing, dreamy of all the songs I heard thus far. It reaches so deep into my souls, so deep...
you're the night, Lilah a little girl lost in the woods you're a folktale the unexplainable you're a bedtime story the one that keeps the curtains closed I hope you're waiting for me cause I can't make it on my own I can't make it on my own it's too dark to see the landmarks and I don't want your good luck charms I hope you're waiting for me across your carpet of stars you're the night, Lilah you're everything that we can't see Lilah you're the possibility you're the bedtime story the one that keeps the curtains closed and I hope you're waiting for me cause I can't make it on my own I can't make it on my own sweet-ass sax solo unknown the unlit world of old you're the sounds I've never heard before off the map where the wild things grow another world outside my door here I stand I'm all alone driving down the pitch black road Lilah you're my only home and I can't make it on my own you're a bedtime story the one that keeps the curtains closed I hope you're waiting for me cause I can't make it on my own I can't make it on my own
Exquisitely beautiful and sad and wonderous; 35 people who disliked this need to learn to find themselves as this is pain and joy that has to be experienced
Dios! Regards from a spanish morphine listener
The last complete Stage concert of Morphine / Mark Sandman was in Lisbon 1999, 3 days before he died in Italy. I will never forget the 2 times I saw them playing in Portugal. Totaly .
"The Night", Morphine's last studio album released shortly before Mark's untimely death, may have been their best album up to that point. With this album, it almost felt like Mark and the band were finally going to break into the mainstream after nearly a decade of building a cult following in the alternative music scene, getting more and more notice upon each new release and singles on movie soundtracks, but then the unthinkable happened, and he died before he could get a taste of that level of fame.
one of the most significant so called "supertrios" in rock music history. "Cure for Pain" just killed me from the start, when girl I met gave me a cassette at my place and said: "play it, it's cool". oh my, it was so good!
Oh my. Now I feel like walking through the dirty, old, high tenements with open windows at night in August, hearing the wind howling desperately while becoming my only company
Heard this just after Sandman (Morphine's lead singer) passed---kinda sad knowing that there wouldn't be anymore songs by him ever again, but he left behind such a body of work that people still appreciate to this to day, which is enough.
listening to a home town station from newark nj......came across this dope song and remembered the lyrics.......found them on youtube........really digging this.
I listened to this song when I was young but forgot about it. I recently heard it again playing in a t shirt store. Brought back memories :') Beautiful song.
I took saxophone lessons from Dana for a little while and hung out with him a bit, saw a Vapors of Morphine show. He's still carrying on the same sort of music and playing at all the big spots Morphine used to hit.
pure heroin fueled emotion right here guys, there is no better poetry than poetry from someone who's felt the most pleasure and the most pain you can feel
@JPBStory "Lilah \l(i)- lah\ as a girl's name is a variant of Delilah (Hebrew), Leila (Arabic), Lila (Arabic) and Lyla (English), and the meaning of Lilah is "languishing, lovelorn, seductive; night beauty"." ;)
@DIURKAZ I'm not sure what point you're trying to make but if you're saying that Lilah is unlikely to be morpine then I agree but I was just replying to your original suggestion that she might be. If you're just giving me the etymology of a name...ok...? =-)
@eDgAr7sAnChEz If you mean it's like he had a precognition of his own death, yeah, I could see that - but as he didn't commit suicide it's not like a suicide letter, is it?
It´s actually "I can make it on my own". The lyrics don´t make much sense if they read "I can´t make it on my own". He´s on his way getting to Lilah on his own. Why would he beseech her to wait for him if he couldn´t get there on his own and also doesn´t specify if he´s getting help to get to her?
Great graphics for a beautiful song. Whoever made this: it's actually "I CAN make it on my own". Listen carefully. Excdept during the "rap". Then it is "can't" instead of "can". I never realized this myself until I learned to sing and play it.
I named my newborn daughter Lilah Annelise today. I remembered the name from this beautiful song.
Masterpiece, there is no music and lyrics like that anymore
I spent the last thirty-five years collecting records. This song is probably the most special, accomplished, poetic, inspired, numbing, dreamy of all the songs I heard thus far. It reaches so deep into my souls, so deep...
One of the best, saddest and beautiful songs ever played...love it...
you're the night, Lilah
a little girl lost in the woods
you're a folktale
the unexplainable
you're a bedtime story
the one that keeps the curtains closed
I hope you're waiting for me
cause I can't make it on my own
I can't make it on my own
it's too dark to see the landmarks
and I don't want your good luck charms
I hope you're waiting for me
across your carpet of stars
you're the night, Lilah
you're everything that we can't see
Lilah
you're the possibility
you're the bedtime story
the one that keeps the curtains closed
and I hope you're waiting for me
cause I can't make it on my own
I can't make it on my own
sweet-ass sax solo
unknown the unlit world of old
you're the sounds I've never heard before
off the map where the wild things grow
another world outside my door
here I stand I'm all alone
driving down the pitch black road
Lilah you're my only home
and I can't make it on my own
you're a bedtime story
the one that keeps the curtains closed
I hope you're waiting for me
cause I can't make it on my own
I can't make it on my own
Could the lyrics be any more poignant? You want to enfold yourself in this and let it carry you away

That hypnotic rap he does at 3:14 is so, so smooth

this song is just amazing. Words,music,voice..everything is so damn awesome.
I miss Morphine.
one of the most significant so called "supertrios" in rock music history.
"Cure for Pain" just killed me from the start, when girl I met gave me a cassette at my place and said: "play it, it's cool". oh my, it was so good!

Simply amazing. This is pure musical treasure!
Yup. I can't make it on my own..
Oh my. Now I feel like walking through the dirty, old, high tenements with open windows at night in August, hearing the wind howling desperately while becoming my only company
this masterpiece must be played at my funeral
You're the night, Lilah. A little girl lost in the woods.
You're a folk tale, the unexplainable...
this is probably the best song in the world ever

Only just stummbled across this song by pure chance. So glad i did, it's a masterpiece.
this song is so hauntingly beautiful. it is an embrace when there is no-one there to embrace you.
I took saxophone lessons from Dana for a little while and hung out with him a bit, saw a Vapors of Morphine show. He's still carrying on the same sort of music and playing at all the big spots Morphine used to hit.
Absolutely beautiful record. I'v eonly just discovered Morphine... incredible.
Unforgettable song!
R.I.P. Sandman..
R.I.P. Mark

OH MY GOD SO MUCH SAX *drools*
Magic!!
Gladstone still does HBN at his website Kafka lives in Maine.
@makarygielda i read somewhere, probably wikipedia that the band called itself a ''low rock'' band
@aljoshabre Cheers! Exactly, this music can't be labeled under any genre, Morphine is just that... Morphine. Another reason to love em even more.
good ears on the outro rap I think you may have nailed it!
He also does it on YT.
That's my favourite song.

@XottDawyd Fortunately. I can't imagine 1. Many people liking this sort of thing, or 2. Those who do like it wanting a whole lot of it.
"i hope youre waiting for me... i cant make It on my on..."
yes........I know.........heartbreaking
How on earth could anyone dislike this? o.O
I'm there right now. It's next level.
I listen to this song to feel classy.
@DIURKAZ I'm not sure what point you're trying to make but if you're saying that Lilah is unlikely to be morpine then I agree but I was just replying to your original suggestion that she might be. If you're just giving me the etymology of a name...ok...?

Y DID GOD HAVE TO TAKE MARK (SANDMAN) SO YOUNG!!???
Best ... Fantastic emo
yeah! hook it up, courtney.
*sigh* good ol' courtney... always on point with the questionable internet prescription bit.
Yea!
@DutchCourageWhoohoo That Handsome Devil's sounds sorta like this, so I'd recommend looking them up
a sand with the name, the only sand.
Anyone got the staff or even tabs for the sax?
@DutchCourageWhoohoo Mark Sandman did do some solo work. Other than that, can't think of much.
Sensacional!
Negócio bonito da porra, te dana!
Actually, it's "Layla" not "Lilah" - Layla is arabic name which literally means "the night". Check out wikipedia.
One of the best songs ever… IMHO
Oh my God, i had no idea Sophia..
I to jest bardzo słuszna propozycja :)
@makarygielda Alt rock, jazz rock ... it really can't be summed up to that.
@Inquisitive76er My daughter, Lilah Annelise, of course :)
Esta chiro!!
Anyone has tabs for the two string bass?

what type of music is morphine playing, cause i was thinking and i can't imagine what can it be....
XD
please can you upload this again with better pictures.
i'd choose it among the soundtracks of my thoughts
Keeping my curtains closed...tonight
me to tonight..
@n8tureboy ~ Me too!
@undertablue Eh, sorry. Perhaps there's a larger market for this kinda thing than I thought.
Anyone familiar with the "Background Pony" Story might think this song goes well with the story.
You're the night Lailah,a little girl lost in the woods
He's saying "Lilah", like from the earlier Morphine track of the same name.
Great graphics for a beautiful song. Whoever made this: it's actually "I CAN make it on my own". Listen carefully. Excdept during the "rap". Then it is "can't" instead of "can". I never realized this myself until I learned to sing and play it.
@MegaSaurabh7 you know it's back now? Fan-sponsored on my site and You-Tube channel.
Agreed this music is far too good to be mainstream. Its way out there on its own.
