I have the Aida cartridge, which Mr. Ledermann personally created for me. I am always impressed by his understated genius and grand sense of humor. Thank you for all your hard work and fine products.

Why are you taking his name in the past tense ? Has he passed away?

Not at all sure what the point is of taking digital recordings, then mastering them in analogue to transfer to vinyl. I've seen this time and time again on these demos, Vanessa Fernandez, Anne Bisson, Chasing the Dragon, Sera Una Noche, etc, etc, etc. If you're actually saying these vinyl set ups playing back digital recordings sound better than the digital original, you're not for real or you need a better D.A.C.

David Carr - Vinyl playback systems as a whole use a different filtering system (RIAA Curve, various Pre-amps also including low-rumble filters, etc.), they don't sound identical. Many people prefer the frequency profile of Vinyl, for any number of reasons, others prefer digital, both have their own idiomatic strengths and weakness. I like both, but prefer vinyl for specific listening over digital (and far prefer lossless digital to lossy, I CAN most definitely hear and feel the difference), and vice versa. When I go back and forth between CD's and LP's of the same material, my kids prefer Vinyl, everytime. They can't always articulate exactly why (and they don't have nearly the sentimental attachment to ant of the gear or the music I have), but their preference is real and it's consistent.
In addition to sonic characteristics, I, personally, enjoy the medium of Vinyl; the larger artwork, more detailed liner notes, the smell of the jackets and sleeves and of the vinyl, physically removing the disk from the sleeves, being intentional and committed about my listening material, placing the record on the TT platter, cueing the needle, etc.. Those little, almost Ritual, pleasures, are pretty much entirely absent from modern Streaming services (which I do enjoy, as well, but in a different context, a different way). Different strokes for different folks.

@@StopMoColorado I agree that the artwork and physical media aspect of the vinyl experience has advantages. But how the addition of the RIAA curve can be beneficial, I just cannot wrap my head around. As far as other filters go, they might as well be implemented in digital playback systems, either side of the DAC (analog/digital domain).
The only possible reason I can conclude why a digital source could play better on vinyl is that the vinyl production process uses a better DAC than the home user.

@@oscarwahlstrom5426 There is something else to consider. The physical limitations of vinyl and how that changes the way it is mastered. To tell the truth digital is better than vinyl and I would prefer that due to how much easier it is to deal with if it weren't for the loudness wars and they way it affects the sound of the music on digital formats. Vinyl isn't immune to it but the physical limitations restrict how much they can compress it. The wiki on loudness wars has an interesting graphic with three releases of sharp dress man by zztop compared.

1499 bucks for a cartridge, YIPES.

Yup......but the only cartridge company that will rebuilt all our models for 20% or LESS......so far lower cost per play, and far greater performance and enjoyment, for far longer. Would you buy a car that could not be repaired?? You can have a honeymoon each time you put on a new record, or an old favorite recording with a Soundsmith design, whereas the honeymoon with a new car wears off quite soon and does not return. Expensive? Not comparatively. Quality of life and long term value. That's what we do at Soundsmith for our customers - we do what no one else cares enough to do.

April Mae - You could easily pay multiples more for a lesser cartridge. True, there are some laughable excesses in the Audiophile world, but at some point you have to face the reality that you (generally) get what you pay for. Just like there's a market for inexpensive American or Japanese cars with chintzy plastic interiors and a market for autos lined with burled walnut and leather, there's a market for $50 Cartridges and one for $15k ones. Though I'm nearer the former than the latter, I've got enough well-heeled friends that I've heard the difference, and it's quite real, indeed.

@Marten Dekker I'm hearing side wall reflections as well as the intrinsic brightness. They both detract from the very good midrange clarity. He's traded bass extension for sensitivity which helps the dynamics and articulation but makes the treble more apparent.

@Marten Dekker I would have liked to hear the strain gauge cartridge. It has the lowest moving mass of any production model and thus would produce the least record wear. As for the speakers, they're like engines: there's no substitute for cubic inches.
