  • Vietnam Veterans like Don were sometimes disrespected after returning home. For years, feelings of guilt and traumatic experiences took their toll even though he didn't recognize it. Then 9/11 triggered something in Don and he started having nightmares and angry outbursts. He drank a lot to try to cope. Hear his reaction to learning he had PTSD. Dude, I never thought about Vietnam until this summer, 53 years later, when my doorgunner came to visit and brought his grown daughters and wife and 200 slides and, suddenly I remembered so much. He asked me if I remembered the night he called forward and told me there were tracers all around the aircraft, and I suddenly did and had not thought of it for over 50 years. Then, I was reminded of the day we were shot down and I suddenly remembered the bullets in the water around me in the rice paddy! My late wife and I were together for 35 years and Vietnam was never mentioned. Whew! We killed so many people and I now remember so much and have quite a bit of trouble going to sleep. I named my son after my flight school buddy who came back in a box. He would be 73, but died when he was 20. Wars do that! Bummer! Best of luck to all of us!
