It's recommended to unplug your battery before working with car electronics, but it's not necessary. If you do unplug the battery, expect the car to flash warning lights on the dash for the first startup. But after a few miles of light driving and another restart the codes should go away, assuming your car has no other existing issues 👍

I don't think the boot's are cut in the same shape, but the boots are most likely held into the shifter surround the same way with upholstery staples.
