A clever episode, but I’m more of a fan of how the time manipulation was used the 2004 episode of the Batman. Using 20 second chronokenisis, allowing you to correct all your mistakes was a fun take on the clock king character (yes, I know the character’s name was Francis gray and he was never referred to as clock king. But come on.)
To this day, I still haven't gotten tired of listening to the suspenseful score as Batman races towards the river while the bomb slowly begins to explode in his hands. What an exciting scene. 🤩
I enjoyed it, and I am a fan of anything time travel related, and this episode reminded me of an old ducktales episode where Hewey, dewy, and Louie got a hold of a gadget that seem to freeze time, but it did the same thing as the gadget in this show.

Temple Fugate is one of those odd villains who wasn't really relatable as a kid, but pretty entertaining to watch as an adult. I might go so far as calling him an underrated villain.
Agreed. There's something rather sinister about someone who is essentially an obsessive compulsive control freak accountant who holds a grudge. It's such a cold and disassociated hate that it's rather fascinating. Then again, I enjoy a villain who can go toe to toe with the cape and cowl crowed who doesn't need gadgets to be scary (though if they get them that's fine too). I'd kinda like to see this Clock King fight the Joker.
He's a lot more understandable as an adult. I know a lot of people use the meme of the Joker being understandable in that kind of free of society's expectations and rules, but as you get even older you can find peace in the routine and just want things to run smoothly, easily, and on time. He's just that taken to the extreme degree.
A very cool episode. I especially liked Roscoe Lee Browne as Dr. Wakati. Fun fact: Dr. Wakati's residence is reused as Professor Ivo's mansion in the Justice League episode, Tabula Rasa.
Can you imagine being a commuter in Gotham, and for two days in a row, the Batmobile is just inexplicably parked right in the middle of the bridge, so you just have to drive around it just to get to work?
I like this episode alot. It really made me wish that the Temple Fugate version of the Clock King could come to the main DC Comics. He'd have made for a great threat for Batman and I really do like his design.
Its crazy how DCAU is able to get what wouldve been C list rogues into a very memorable character. Even into the justice league series, who else but the clock king would be methodical enough for the suicide squad/task force x to strategize a crazy plan to hijack the JLA watchtower. I would even consider francis grey from The Batman 2004 cartoon as that version of the clock king since he literally can rewind time to save scum his way when doing crimes.
Fun Facts:Flash pulls the same stunt Batman did when he runs away with the bomb in the JL episode "Wild Cards" The auctioneer appears to be visually modeled on the English actor Terry-Thomas, given the man's accent and distinctive gap in his teeth. When the Batmobile detects the time device underneath, Batman blasts through the floor to destroy it. This is similar to a scene in the film Batman Returns, in which the Penguin takes control of the Batmobile with a device planted underneath, and Batman punches through the floor to take it out.
The Clock King is definitely a underated, unique villain in Batman’s rouge’s gallery (let alone, the DC comics universe). This DCAU version plus the mid-2000’s version from WB’s The Batman, are arguably the most sympathetic characters to ever exist. Personally, I like the WB’s version of The Clock King, yeah he’s a little goofy and makes a lot of bad puns but Clock King (A.K.A Francis Grey) has that uncanny and fairly decent sense of camp in his personality that make him fun and relatable. SPOILERS for some that have not seen his episode, Grey does get a happy ending at the end. Also, I want to point out one little Easter egg for the B:TAS episode; Time Out of Joint, Batman and Robin scaling the side of the mayor’s building is a small reference to the 60’s T.V. show.
Reminds me of a movie that came out in 2008 called Suspension. It's about a guy that had a special camera that could stop time. I've always liked the genre of time travel and time manipulation.
Reminds me of a movie that came out in 2001 called Clockstoppers. It's about a guy that had a special watch that could stop time. I've always like the genre of time travel and time manipulation.
I’m surprised he didn’t accidentally age himself to dust, turn into a baby, or get stuck in high gear. If this had been in Batman Beyond, the baddy would’ve gotten a fitting fate worse than death from abusing this tech.
For long time, I thought that's what happened to him. The final shot of him in this episode is just a still frame of him in a police van. He never moves, so I thought he had been trapped in a moment of time.
You know how you can use the Clock King again? Have him try to remake the time device from memory, but having a weaker powersource. Thus every interval the Clock King has to sync up with time or else face the consiquences. But every x Amount of seconds he phazes back into time and the more he touches and carries the more he has to phaze back into time every time. This is so he let's say he can't just punch batman or steal anything without planning it out or you know.. driving a car at hyperspeed since the device will overload. Of course the climax would be Batman taking the timings in consideration to catch the Clock king, but also needing a device to stop the time control chip all together to catch the criminal. That's what I think ultimately the clock king should be. Someone who has to control time in perfect timings of his own.
Also, I love that Clock King is the only BTAS villain to never stray from his initial goal. Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and Riddler stopped seeking revenge on Rupert Thorne, Ferris Boyle, Roland Daggett, and Daniel Mockridge respectively after their debut episodes. Joker just creates a new scheme every episode. Poison Ivy does whatever in hers. Even Mad Hatter temporarily forgot about his obsession with Alice in "The Worry Men". But Fugate? He never stopped hating the mayor and each time he wants to kill him at any opportunity, only with different methods.
Oh come on! I can't believe you reviewed this episode without referencing the Adam West Batman running through town with a giant comedy explosive. "Sometimes you just can't get rid of a bomb!" Was practically gift wrapped for you!
Him running with the bomb also feels like a nice nod to the adam west batman scene where he runs with a bomb (without super powers) that has become a meme!
I do agree that Clock King deserved another go-around, as his character is quite a compelling one. He could even step into the role of assisting other criminals to pull off major heists in exchange for a cut. Depending on whom he teams with would push a lot of different plot devices. Personally, I could see him and the Riddler doing well.
I REALLY liked the Clock King. Pity that the writers didn't used him more in the series. Fact: Clock King's motives is one of those cases that proves Joker's theory (in The Killing Joke) that anyone could loose his sanity after just one bad day!!!

I guess part of the Task Force X arrangement was that Fugate had to give up those awesome clock glasses of his, so that... he would be less tempted to backslide into villainy? Being meticulously boring and dry is a weird personality for a villain to have but it's certainly more memorable than any previous interpretation of the character. The other rogues probably don't like Fugate very much, and doubtless the feeling is mutual.
this is a great episode, but I take major issue with that line batman makes about if anything hit the batmobile it would trigger an atomic explosion.....I dont know physics enough to know if that passes muster, but I do know that with them stuck in time on a bridge, there is no way no car struck the batmobile frozen in time for 2 whole days, they needed to have that scene take place somewhere remote so that that moment wouldn't get ruined by its own set up.
I always thought it'd have been neat to tie Wakati and his devices into the Speed Force somehow. They certainly seem to work the same way as the Flash's powers.
Thanks for the shoutout to the voice actor behind Dr. Wakati - never put two-and-two together that he was also the voice of Kingpin on the animated '90's Spider-Man show!
Top 15 episode for me. Can't believe you miss a good Adam West joke at 4:51 though, like "Fortunately no ducks nearby," or "I guess this was a day he COULD get rid of a bomb."
Time out of Joint really is a fantastic episode! I was bummed when I heard J from J's reviews wasn't as into it, glad you were more into it! Nice to see people praise different stories instead of everyone liking the same ones!
Now this is an enjoyable episode, Clock King is an underrated villain in the show imo, this is also my favorite episode with him as the villain, his first one is a good one too imo, i hope that when somebody else uses the clock king in a a story again tehy do something similar to this.
Huh! kinda surprised you didn't touch on the two Adam West touches in this episode. To have Batman point out the glaringly obvious(?) when the Batmobile got trapped in time was a hell of a 60s Batman exclamation, to be sure. We get the double-down when he has a bomb in both hands, running around in a frustratingly public place while the explosion seems to be _taking its time of it._ Meant as a nod to the Caped Crusader of old or not, it gives me grins to think about it that way~
His voice is so distinct, how could I not have put it together that he was the voice of Kingpin! I watched Spider-Man all the time! I also instantly knew it was him as the narrator in the Babe movies and the voice of that robot in Logan's Run. I know him best from being the replacement butler on Soap after Benson left for his spin-off series. Also for his guest appearances on Barney Miller, All in the Family, The Cosby Show and A Different World (the last two where he played the same recurring character).
You know what might be interesting? If the clock king and the riddler teamed up Both are so calculating and plan things out, it'd be cool to see the two of them working together
I enjoyed this episode it reminded me of an old ducktales episode where Hewy, Dewy, and Louie got a hold of a gadget that did the same thing as the ones in this show.
He could've been the single most deadly villain of the show. Since he is super sped up compared to the rest of the world, everything he touches would be like being hit by a supersonic bullet. He could literally vaporize people by just sneezing at them.
This was an especially memorable episode for me. I guess I really enjoy SciFi elements like this and you're right. This was explored very well. I wanted another Clock King episode but we never got one.
Looking at how the Clock King used to look, it makes me wonder just how many supervillains wore spandex with their logo polka doted all over the outfit?
Seeing Batman run at Flash-like speed carrying a slowed down explosion makes me think of an Invader Zim episode with a slightly similar premise, and then I laugh.
Unfortunately, despite the interesting premise, UA-cam only showed the last four minutes of the episode. Those were the most interesting parts, mind you, but I still wished I saw the beginning. I love stories that involve a villain manipulating time for his own ends. The fact that the BTAS show founded a way to make Clock King more interesting than just simply a precision-obsessed baddie is great.
I don't even remember Clock King's other appearance in the series but I do remember this episode. You didn't mention it in the review but it's worth noting that no one was actually frozen in this episode. They way they explained it is that the time devices can only slow down or speed up time not stop it, but it can slow down time to such a degree that it looks as if everyone is frozen. It also looks as though the Clock King is invisible at the start of the episode but then when we get to see things from his perspective he's actually moving so fast that everyone around him can't be perceived as moving at all. There is kind of a continuity mistake as how the device works suddenly changes once it's used on the Bat-mobile. I wouldn't have an issue with the device having other settings but it doesn't make any sense what it's actually doing to the Bat-mobile in that scene. Why can't they just stop the car and get out to remove the device instead of shooting the floor? Considering the car is being speed up though time how did they not immediately crash into something? Also considering that 2 days had past by in the few minutes they were trapped in the car that would make it seem as if they were slowed down rather than sped up. If they were slowed down it would make a lot more sense how they could be trapped in a moving vehicle for 2 days and not crash since they'd be moving so slowly everyone would see them as barely moving if it could be perceived as moving at all. And they later use the same trick to speed up their motorcycles and it works just fine. I'm just totally confused what was actually happening in that Bat-mobile scene but the rest of the episode was really good and he's a character I wish they'd used more.
I always liked the Clock King, surprisingly to myself. I'm a novice to DC outside of this series, but didn't Clock King become more of a Green Arrow villian? Btw, I always loved the Terry Thomas inspired auctioneer in this episode.
We will use a Philip K Dick novels title. Then use every sort of time manipulation trick that one can find from his stories (except Time Out Of Joint, I dont think it had anything like this) just so we can recreate the "Sometimes you just cant get rid of a bomb scene" Thanks. I love it.
That gadget is seriously broken. If the professor had given Batman one of those freely, there wouldn't be a single crime he couldn't stop. The only thing that could stop his trick was using the trick them selves. But my favorite concept is stacking the slow of time. You speed up for yourself, but slow down others at the same time. Sound like some game puzzle solving and it has a lot of creative potential.
Funny enough, I wouldn't be shocked if this was a lot of people's first watching of how "Super Speed" works. Yeah, obvious Flash does Flash things with Speed Force, but watching this did seem it was almost like a preview of Speed Force (but obvious with a lot more caviots to it). Still, it would have been fun to see if this tech could have been salvaged if Batman were to try and stop a speedster (not a full counter, but one that would give him some ability to fight back).
Thoughts on Time Out of Joint?

this is a great episode, but I take major issue with that line batman makes about if anything hit the batmobile it would trigger an atomic explosion.....I dont know physics enough to know if that passes muster, but I do know that with them stuck in time on a bridge, there is no way no car struck the batmobile frozen in time for 2 whole days, they needed to have that scene take place somewhere remote so that that moment wouldn't get ruined by its own set up.
Can you imagine being a commuter, and having to drive around that, just to get to work?
I always thought it'd have been neat to tie Wakati and his devices into the Speed Force somehow. They certainly seem to work the same way as the Flash's powers.
While this isn't one of my favorite episodes, it does contain one of my favorite lines:
"You have 30 seconds to show us how to use these!"
I always liked the device Clock King uses in this episode.
I remember showing this episode to my dad (who doesn't watch cartoons) and at the end he said "What the hell?! That was really good"
"Isn't dangerous to use one's own vocabulary?"
Roscoe Lee Browne in Oliver & Company...I think that's how it goes.
The line was actually "Isn't it dangerous to use one's entire vocabulary in a single sentence?"
Mad props to C.J. for composing the score to this Batman animated series episode. Grove street fuh life!
:]
Thanks for the shoutout to the voice actor behind Dr. Wakati - never put two-and-two together that he was also the voice of Kingpin on the animated '90's Spider-Man show!
Clock King just went "Za Warudo!"
Top 15 episode for me. Can't believe you miss a good Adam West joke at 4:51 though, like "Fortunately no ducks nearby," or "I guess this was a day he COULD get rid of a bomb."
I can't wait to watch this series over again. There's probably so much stuff to relate to as an adult.
Time out of Joint really is a fantastic episode! I was bummed when I heard J from J's reviews wasn't as into it, glad you were more into it! Nice to see people praise different stories instead of everyone liking the same ones!
I like the Calculator and Clock King as support staff and expert consultation for the villains.
Okay, pretty sure the guy voicing the scientist is the Robot from Logan's run.
I loved how they animated this episode.
4:55 THE EXPLOSION SHOULD HAVE REVERSED!! that be a genius touch
Time after time
Time won't let me, oh no...
Wait that long.
I remember this episode being a lot of fun. I watched it so many times on dvd.
5:14 *STATIC SHOCK*
Now that you mention it, how about a Spider-May?
Now this is an enjoyable episode, Clock King is an underrated villain in the show imo, this is also my favorite episode with him as the villain, his first one is a good one too imo, i hope that when somebody else uses the clock king in a a story again tehy do something similar to this.
Huh! kinda surprised you didn't touch on the two Adam West touches in this episode. To have Batman point out the glaringly obvious(?) when the Batmobile got trapped in time was a hell of a 60s Batman exclamation, to be sure. We get the double-down when he has a bomb in both hands, running around in a frustratingly public place while the explosion seems to be _taking its time of it._ Meant as a nod to the Caped Crusader of old or not, it gives me grins to think about it that way~
I remember this season more than any other
The fantastical elements really stood out
His voice is so distinct, how could I not have put it together that he was the voice of Kingpin!
The idea of being trapped in time is utterly terrifying
You know what might be interesting? If the clock king and the riddler teamed up
Both are so calculating and plan things out, it'd be cool to see the two of them working together
Yeah and that this time controlling device could be used for Hunter Zolomon.
I enjoyed this episode it reminded me of an old ducktales episode where Hewy, Dewy, and Louie got a hold of a gadget that did the same thing as the ones in this show.
The Time Teaser, yeah I remember that too!
3:15 , take your coffee break at 3:15
love the clockwork king
i think i never saw this episode ... but its so cool that he actually had a second Episode .. i always thought he only had 1
I wish that this time stopping device could have used for future episodes mainly for Hunter Zolomon.
Man was not yet ready to take advantage of time. As the doctor would discover in his own time.
I like how the task force X episode made him look considerably older.
Oh my god, I can’t help but think of the 60’s Batman running with a bomb in front of his face, but now Batman has SUPER SPEED! That’s awesome!
2:20 ...
...
*from the back* "I get it!"
Batman running around to get rid of a bomb is classic
Loved Roscoe Lee Browne as Box the robot in Logan's run and Mr. Arrow in Treasure Planet.
I always liked the Clock King, surprisingly to myself. I'm a novice to DC outside of this series, but didn't Clock King become more of a Green Arrow villian?
Btw, I always loved the Terry Thomas inspired auctioneer in this episode.
I believe he was originally a Green Arrow villain, then slowly started becoming associated with Batman too.
@@ashleytuchin7693 yea, i thought i heard that as well, ty!
We will use a Philip K Dick novels title. Then use every sort of time manipulation trick that one can find from his stories
(except Time Out Of Joint, I dont think it had anything like this)
just so we can recreate the "Sometimes you just cant get rid of a bomb scene"
Thanks. I love it.
My favorite part was the cameo by Monterey Jack as the Auctioneer!
Great I finally have a name to the voice of Spider-Man’s kingpin. He was such a great and iconic villain.
Oh Roscoe Lee Browne had Roles. He had one of those Story Teller voices that you just want tapes of
Awesome!!
Thank you for the video.
My favorite episode
Funny enough, I wouldn't be shocked if this was a lot of people's first watching of how "Super Speed" works. Yeah, obvious Flash does Flash things with Speed Force, but watching this did seem it was almost like a preview of Speed Force (but obvious with a lot more caviots to it). Still, it would have been fun to see if this tech could have been salvaged if Batman were to try and stop a speedster (not a full counter, but one that would give him some ability to fight back).
