    I learned almost nothing about the product from this review, and I think a lot of that has to do with the lack of comprehension of how this product actually works. For almost the entirety of the demonstration at 6:10, there isn't actually any compression being applied and you are uselessly changing parameters. I also don't know why you chose to demonstrate this pedal with a bunch of soft solo bass arrangements that sound worse with a reduced dynamic range.
    I think a better review would have included demonstrations on how this pedal can shape transients/tone and how that could be applied in a live setting.

    This compressor is fantastic. I've had it for 4 years now and it's never let me down. It has never left my chain since going on my pedal board, and it has been incredibly reliable. I've never had any issues outside of user error when getting my settings right. I will say it can be daunting compared to more simple compressors that are just magic boxes that do all the work for you. But the tuning and tweaking of your sound you can do with this compared to those is just amazing. Plus I love having a gain reduction light on it so you know when it's engaging.
    Great product, and a great demo! Well done guys!

    Meters (or even a single LED besides the effect on indicator) on a compressor really help you “see” as well as hear what’s going on with your signal. Empress & Darkglass compressors have excellent meters as well.

    This compressor is good for high compression ratios and limiting. For something similar in terms of transparency I think the Empress compressors are more suited for general compression that you can just leave on all gig.

    Turning the knob clockwise gives a faster attack time - the terminology in the user manual saying turning clockwise gives an "increased attack time" is a bit confusing. What I think is odd is that no matter where the attack knob is, the level of compression doesn't really change. On a standard compressor if you went from a long attack to a short attack you would see a big difference in the level of gain reduction/compression

    • @sunnys.k.cheung6591
      @sunnys.k.cheung6591 Рік тому +2

      Yes, the attack knob is actually reversed from a standard compressor practice . I just figured it out lately. It took me years to figure out.
      How stupid was that, I mean myself and MXR. .....LOL :D

    • @ItsABOUTflamTIME
      @ItsABOUTflamTIME Рік тому

      You don't see a difference in gain reduction because the slowest attack is still less than 2ms. On a standard compressor, you would not see a "big difference in the level of gain reduction/compression" unless the attack time was significant compared to the length of the loudest part of the sound.

    I play light finger style and let my amp do the work, however it sounds like shit when I accidentally pluck hard, can ya recommend a setting where it kicks in when striking loud notes?

    • @SonicXRage
      @SonicXRage 3 роки тому +1

      I can't answer your question directly, but I can direct you to this video which will help you fix any inconsistencies in your plucking through improving your technique: ua-cam.com/video/BpDIyAwYdTE/v-deo.html
      This is very important stuff to learn if you haven't already because, if you try to use a compressor to cover up poor technique, then you may end up changing your tone unintentionally. However, if you're already good at controlling your dynamics and you just need to catch those once-in-a-while flubs, then a compressor could probably help.

    Technical question about compressors. with my ampeg amp the low E and A strings are like 2x louder than my d and G strings what kind of compressor would smooth out the volume of all my notes? I'm torn between this compressor and the darkglass

    • @oleksandrhorskyi8442
      @oleksandrhorskyi8442 5 років тому +1

      Almost every compressor will smooth out the volume, and almost every comp got it's own character. You gotta pick your own. Judging from those two I would prefer MXR since I was using it and was very very happy with it, but the darkglass is extremely good sounding too I didn't have the opportunity to use it myself in the mix though but also MXR is way cheaper as far as I remember

      I agree--it's almost impossible to demonstrate compression on a medium that's already compressed. What I need to hear is 20:1 with short attack/long release back-to-back with 4:1 long attack/quick release (which the latter would be very subtle if even perceptible.)

    Not all bass players a solo musicians, this demo tells you nothing about how the pedal would work in the context of a band.
