Excellent video! I'd like to point out, however, that there is no evidence that native speakers of a language actually process a literal meaning and a figurative meaning of an idiomatic expression while conversing. The general consensus is that they do not. We simply understand idioms as units, and probably, there are primaries in the idiom which, once uttered signal an idiom. If a person said, it's raining cat's....and then was cut off before completing their sentence, a native listener would still be able to process the intent. Would the same hold true if someone said 'it's cats and dogs out there." Probably not. So the primary point is that an idiom is a semantical unit and is probably processed much like a word is processed, rather than the literal meaning being parsed and then the figurative meaning being parsed, whereby the listener has to then decide which meaning to choose. While "it's raining cats and dogs" could have a literal meaning, although a nonsense one, there simply IS no literal meaning associated with the expression.

Thanks for this comment. Well! all this is a revelation to me but it all makes sense of course. :) Guess, the more effort non native English speakers spend in learning these idiomatic expressions, the more easy it will be for them to recall their meanings.... It's all about one's comfort level and practice with a language....
