Great topic! It sometimes becomes complicated buying Blu-Rays without knowing which versions are included, or the best remasters. I still need to track down a 2015 Terminator 2 Blu-Ray which is considered the best transfer of that film. There’s also Caligula, which recently had two prominent releases, but both differ in what’s offered for cuts and audio. Once Upon a Time in America’s 2-disc Blu-Ray includes two cuts, but the “theatrical cut” is actually the 229 minute version, with the 251 minute version being called an “extended director’s cut.” So it actually doesn’t include the shorter, unpopular theatrical cut. It’s unfortunate that a standard isn’t set for Blu-Ray releases similar to Touch of Evil, Close Encounters, or It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. We want all the cuts!
I actually own the director’s cut for "Pearl Harbor", and I actually think it is better than the theatrical version. Michael Bay wanted to depict the attack in a somewhat similar fashion to the D-Day sequence in "Saving Private Ryan" and it really shows here, earning an R rating as opposed to the PG-13 theatrical cut. Not to mention it is packed with special features, which is always my favorite part of the home release.
Thank goodness for libraries and physical media. Otherwise, these director's cut movies would be lost to time with everything moving to digital ownership. Garret Gilchrist actually commented on whether or not The Thief and the Cobbler should be finished due to Williams' passing. He said that it should remain untouched because it was Williams' vision. However, given how many people came together, I think finishing his version of the film could work and could even serve as a tribute to him by many animators who studied his animation book in college.
So many comedies get extended cuts via calling them “Unrated.” Some of these do add some significant changes, others not so much, and others I’m not even sure about because I’ve only ever seen these movies either via the Unrated on DVD or heavily censored on TV where even more scenes get removed. It’s a shame that practically all streaming services don’t include these versions because of their unrated status, leaving physical the best way to watch these.
I have always seen the "Unrated" versions as just another way to entice people to buy the DVDs rather than true director's cuts. Although in the case of the first three "American Pie" movies, I've only ever watched the Unrated versions. So I would probably feel something was missing if I watched the theatrical cuts (I know the infamous pie scene in the first one is different in each version, for example).
@ yeah they were definitely part of that wave of home video marketing where every ad was like “Watch it like you never have before.” And now they could actually mean it, even if in many cases all it did was add maybe a scene or two and extend a few of the more raunchy ones. The actually interesting ones were the unrated cuts for PG-13 movies. Like in Anchorman for example, I love the barrage of swears Ron gives out after he’s fired; something that would’ve made it an instant R.
Brian Henson's preferred cut of the movie, newly restored, was added to Disney Plus two years ago. It's under the extras section of "Muppet Christmas Carol."
It’s available on Disney plus now, but still no 4k disc release. Disney has never been great with that format though so it’s unfortunately understandable
The Director’s Cut of Thomas and the Magic Railroad had a bit of hiccup, when Shout Factory announced the film on Blu-ray, the full work print of the cut leaked online, Britt Allcroft was upset about since Shout did release the director’s cut on the blu-ray as planned, but honestly the Theatrical Cut is better, cause the Directors Cut Sucks.

I hate that the only versions of The Outsiders and Dumb and Dumber that are on Blu-ray are the "Complete Novel" cut and the unrated cut respectively.
This was great! You got a sub. Don't hate me, you remind me a bit of the Mitchell and Webb skit about the history professor doing the ww2 documentary.
If there is one director's cut I'm interested in seeing a release, it is for the infamous 2003 film Tiptoes
Wished we'd get the original hey good lookin already it's been 50 fucking years...... jeez

one film I'd love to see get a directors cut is the Muppet Christmas Carol

@@MrCoat I know but it irks me that that cut hasn't gotten a Blu-ray release yet
