Colin and Penelope's Carriage Scene was longer in the book (Bridgerton Season 3 Review)

  • Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) star in Netflix's Bridgerton season 3, following in the footsteps of Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) and Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor).
In this video, I revisit the carriage scene to unpack how much LONGER it was in the book and how it offers a deeper insight into Colin and Penelope as characters, their relationship, and the level of conversation that wasn't present in the Netflix series. I also recently published a pre-prepared review of episodes 3.05 and 3.06 and I will talk about episodes 7 and 8 when I'm back! Subscribe for more to come!

My main comment here is that they should have spent more time talking to each other this season. Just in general. It was pathetic how little time they spent talking to each other, and how much time was spent with Colin talking over her.

I don't like the fact that the carriage scene was put before he knew she was whistledown. There was so much pent up emotion because he knew who she was and still loved and wanted her. And by putting the Whistledown confession after that scene and almost never letting them talk to each other Penelope looked like a petulant child in stead of a woman who knew her worth.

Can I also just add that all of the side plots so far and season 3 part 1 have added nothing to the overall narrative. In season 1 the side plots were there, but they also contributed to the overall story. Arc and narrative that the season was trying to tell. For example, Marina surprise, pregnancy and Daphne's ignorance of knowing where babies come from, both serve to show how sheltered these young women are and how they're can't be missteps and pitfalls with that. But here in season three the feathering subplots of having the sisters have a male son So far does nothing for the over.Arching plot and themes of a wall flower blooming, let's say.

I have not read the book, but this scene shows that, WOW, they actually talk! They call each other out, they argue, they know a lot about each other, they actually seem like friends! How wonderful is that! Pity there is source material that details the relationship so well, and they choose not to use it in the show. The show made it seem like Pen and Colin were somewhat friendly, but not at all like they used to be close friends and are crazy about each other.

Firstly, have you considered doing audiobooks? Because when I say I was ENTHRALLED! Secondly, having now watched all of S3, and the acting chops Nicola Coughlans and Luke Newton showed during the LWD reveal, they could have easily carried a carriage bottle episode, where it's just the two of them talking it out! And then the rest of the season as "Polin against the world".

Even before reading that scene I knew about it & was disappointed they put the reveal of whistledown after the declaration of love.
If you haven't finished the season yet don't read ahead of this.
Okay I'm talking spoilers for end episodes now.
I really hated how they ruined the wedding day! Penelope deserved to be happy on her day & having Colin being so cold & distant for days before & after is painful to watch! They should've talked it out at least before the wedding night so we could you know enjoy it. Ugh so frustrating. I get they wanted drama up until the last episode but after seeing how the book did it I feel even more robbed.
I did enjoy this season. I really love Nicola she's super charming in all her interviews & was a relatable angel dealing with all ignorance she has to just being physically unique in this world. I look forward to her future projects.
Thank you for that book reading it puts some things in context. I agree about the arm stuff & his anger being an unfortunate product of the authorial voice & an unfortunate attempt to punctuate the emotional state of the character rather than an overt portrayl of abusive behavior. It does make me a little concerned for the author but you can't live in our times as a woman & not be exposed & influenced by patriarchy even on a subconscious level. If anyone read my journals as a teen in the 90s...😅
I enjoy your reading voice & would enjoy more. Really you could start an asmr channel or a novel reading channel if you want a side-gig ❤

I would have loved if they included more book scenes. The carriage scene is the perfect example of a rush job and same with thr first kiss. Thay scene felt out of place on the show but the book did the right amount of build up. This season was so meh for me. Idk if I'm going to rush to watch the next season as I was the first 2. Plus the whole 2 yrs filiming gap thing between each season is annoying. To me it feels as though they didn't trust that the actors could shine. They repeat the same tropes (each man is at a brothel in the beginning and then they fall in love) sound like how Simon and Anthony started of their season too. Repetitive. Boring. Lazy.

Is it me or is weird that Daphne is not at any of the weddings. I know RJP is not returning but that doesnt mean she cant come back. @LadyJenevia omg, same! I LOVED Wolfgang and Kala. I can't describe how sexy and Right for each other they were. There were so many times she showed she didnt even like rajan (just felt sorry for him and indebted to him), didn't want to get married, and then after she did, the issue with the diluted medicines and the shady partner were big red flags that should have been scripted as signs he's crooked. But then we get the "I'm a simp for my girl and even tho she's in love with someone else ill just tag along." Like what!?
And the scene where she meets Wolfgang and rajan at the villa and we don't get to see her and Wolfgang touch for real! Ugh!!! Anyway. All time let down that we just have to accept. Where is the fanfic section located in my downward spiral into kalagang madness?

@@noa_is_unavailable It felt like maybe the Wachowski(s) could have wanted that to be the ending but it simply didn’t work when they had to quickly wrap everything up in a movie. I think the “throuple” dynamic of Lito, Hernando, and Dani made more sense because they set that up so well and it was always the three of them (although that’s a different type of “throuple” since she’s not really “WITH” them the exact way they are with each other but they are a unit of love? I like the carriage scene more than the mirror scene, which they basically made too long and it felt cringey imo. I have now watched the whole season and I did not enjoy it. There were aspects of it that I liked, Penelope’s glow up and growth as Lady W and as herself. I liked that Penelope’s family became better people to her and to each other. I liked how Penelope and Eloise became friends again, and I liked how Penelope and Colin came together in the end and were happy and in love. Oh and Anthony and Kate’s scenes were lovely.
What I did not like Benedict’s waste of a story line, he is my favourite and it was boring and predictable. I actually fast forward his story which was something I would do with the Featheringtons in the past.
The costumes were very gaudy, tacky and cheap looking. The only outfits I liked were Penelope’s, Kate’s and some of Eloise’s, the majority of the gowns were hideous, Cressida looked like a giant bird and the Queen looked like an eyesore!
I will not be rewatching this season again, rewatched season 2 eight times and season 1 twice! I am now not excited about Benedict’s season as they are probably going to pack full of unnecessary story lines.

In all honesty, in my opinion of course,
I prefer Colin in the show than book Colin, far less toxic. Whilst book Colin is enthralling, he is certainly a product of his time. As a consequence I enjoy the shows carriage scene much more than the book. It appeals to a modern audience far more than the book, centred around a female point of view. But I do think the carriage scene in the show could have been much longer.

That being said…I don’t like the last speech Colin gave to Pen where he essentially just says he’ll be content to be her arm candy. 🤨 Colin is a whole person as much as Pen is and I don’t feel like they respected that very much with his last supposedly romantic speech.

    But.
But yeah the carriage scene should have been longer. They should have talked more (seriously and un seriously).
They should have not dragged out the LW tension so long or overdramatize it.
And that confrontation scene would have made so much more sense in the show than it did in the book 😂
The irony is kind of sad : they love drama yet they only gave a rushed water down version of it when it was already almost perfectly written for them.

Not too many episodes maybe but also characters , like Benedict was pointless , Eloise didn’t do much, why Mundrich story is so important ??!? if their story doesn’t have much to do with the rest of people ? Cressida back story ? Not interested !!! … and lady Danbury and her brother ?????!!?Soooo wrong ! 😂😢 I felt kind of WHAT HAPPENED!!! Check maxton hall , THAT Is a good romantic series ! 😊

Actually there were multiple scenes of pen and Colin that were cut from the final version.... People who saw the original screenings have confirmed this. there was even a 10 minutes sex scene that was cut. Even the actors had said that there is a 10-minute long scene. They were just not aware which ones would be retained and which ones would be cut from the final version. I am beyond mad right now

The 10 minute scene being cut is wild to me! Like that probably took so long to film and they just cut it! Like what the heck!😊

This should have been fleshed out in the carriage. He knew she was Whistledown when he proposed.

At this point they could say “inspired by the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn”. There are things about the show, including the carriage scene that I preferred to the book. But you are absolutely right that they left a LOT of good stuff from the book on the cutting room floor. The show has diverged so much from the book that it’s hard to say that any one book element ought to have been included-if they’d done so, I’m sure the whole balance would have felt different. I can really only appreciate the show as a wholly different piece of art to the book.
I could wish they had tried to stick closer to the book while still modernizing and de-problematizing the characters and themes. But no, and I wonder if this is another feature of the toxic corporate movie industry, that each show runner must try to show their value to the creative process by substantially remaking the source material. I can still be entertained by it, and still appreciate the source material, but I can’t think of it as a beloved story realized on screen. It’s just a different story.

WOW. That scene was so much more meaningful in the book. They cut the carriage scene way too short. What a loss. I will be reading the books now.

Now having seen the whole season…I DO wish they had revealed Whistledown in the carriage scene like in the book. I loved this entire conversation in the book and even if they had made half the conversation happen in the carriage it was MUCH needed.
I love Colin and Pen. I left both part 1 and part 2 feeling like there wasn’t enough of them. That could have been taken care of in a few different ways…as you stated, either more episodes or less side plots. Idk…I’m not angry, but I do feel a little sad and disappointed. Yay…Colin and Pen are together at last. Sure would have been nice to see more of their journey. 😞

This is usually the issue when it comes to books and their film or adaptations.
Series and Book 1 had the fortune to not be one of the big favourites out of the book series and expectations were not as high as they have been for s2 and s3 because of their popularity.
It's a shame for the book fans but from the first series they change aspects of the book especially with the decisions with the castings and how it would be explained.
Particularly favourite scenes from the book for s3 weren't likely to be made the same for the series especially given the length of time that it was written in the book to put on screen for an extended length of time.
It's been clear from the beginning that while it is based on the book series, they willl make it differently as new characters have been introduce so their stories will be given time on the show to forward their storylines.
Obviously it makes it that the book fans and possible others will feel this is unfair as they are invested in the lead couple stories.
It would be great if there had been more episodes for extended development of all main characters stories in this series but it was not to be.
I'm fine that I get to enjoy this series without the expectations of what was in the book so don't have to endure any kind of disappointment.

Ugh ep 7 is the perfect example the fighting and the conversations was good especially that street fight and kiss I wanted more of that so good the acting and writing chefs kiss. Loved the mirror and carriage scene off but I wanted more of them talking their shit out instead of Colin just scowling at her and being distant and her begging him. Like the scene in the last episode where he walks in on her wearing that silk dress and he’s clearly turned on missed opportunity to have a conversation or a intimate scene ughh LUKOLA/POLIN DESERVED BETTER.

I learned to just enjoy the film as it is. Sure they could have done better but maybe I just need to separate the books with the film. There would always be some that are better on the book and there are some that are better on the film. I would just indulge a third version on how I wanted it to be in my own delusion mind 😊
The consolation I have is that in whichever version, they get their HEA (with the happy faces vision of Luke, Nicola and their child in my delusion version).

I do wish the scene was longer in the show. Even if we didn't have the reveal at that point. However, I would have preferred to reveal the way it happened in the books. But I do prefer show Colin, book Colin was way too angry and harsh. I just wanted more romance, maybe a bit more intimate scenes.

Honestly, the carriage scene is still perfect for me as it is. It would have also been great if he knew about Whistledown, but that doesn't take away from my enjoyment tbh.

Most of the carriage scene in the series couldn't have happened as he didn't yet know she was LWD. Still, it was rather poorly written in the series and Colin came off a bit fake and insincere, to me, almost like he was trying to prove a point rather than feeling anything. I really wanted him to really be there in this moment, looking into her soul and really seeing her rather than seeing his own confusion and reacting to that.

Can I just say that I am so impressed with your reading outloud such a long passage with so much inflection and clear pronunciation, without a stumble! It's really not easy to do! (Plus, as someone who has not read the Bridgerton books, I appreciate getting a taste of the actual writing, not just the plot points that I've gleaned from comments.)
