- See how to beef up your snare and get it to cut through the mix with a single-shot snare sample.
Pro mixers don't spend hours auditioning hundreds of samples! Narrow your collection down to a handful of go-to kick and snare samples so you can quickly choose the right one for the mix, commit and move on!
Update Fall 2020
The single-shot snare sample was free for a limited time in Spring of 2020. Now, you can find it as part of my Complete Drum Sample Library, which is exclusively available to members of the Professional Production System.

That’s a really nice one shot thank you. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Those drum samples sound great! The drummer who recorded those samples really knows how to hit a drum!
Wish I was following back when this was available! :(
Where can I get this sample? Keep getting a 404 error 😭
Snare sample doesn't arrive 😕 Any chance to re-upload, Jordan?
It does

Hello ! great vidéo! I find your natural snare sound awesome! Could u tell us which snare and which mic has been used? At the begining of the vidée, when the natural sound come, does it take the whole mics (oh, rooms etc...) or only the 2 proximity mics ? Last question, do u use a phase align plug in or not ? Thanks for ur help ;-)
Thank you for doing this !
The sample link isn't working anymore :'( can someone pls send me the sample?
Does it also sound better with matched volume?
I know this is going to sound stupid but I'm new to home recording.... Can you use this on programmed drums such as GGD? EX: Using GGD as your "live drums" but still adding this trigger to it??
You can!
Very soft shoots. Not good drum samples. Amateur?
I don't mean to be rude, but, c'mon dude, what you call "natural drums" are also programmed. Hi hat sound is quite revealing. Natural overhead mics never sound so isolated and clinical.
It's heavy music; getting the natural room sound of the drum will never cut through the mix. That's why that's cut out because it ends up being unnecessary noise in this style of music.
You've missed the point. I'm not saying using samples is a bad thing, what I meant is that the so called natural sound here is indeed a programmed drum.
About your statement about natural drum sound not cutting through the mix, I couldn't disagree more, just listen to bands like Gojira, Mastodon, Converge, and many others, the core of their drum sound is mainly natural, despite there could be some sample reinforcement. If you ask me, the use of programmed drums is a respectable aesthetic choice, or maybe a necessity because of having a bad drummer to begin with or just not having access to the means to record a real drum.
@@berseoldrik6683 the drum in this video is not programmed. Its actually a real drum, it just happens that the drummer is insanely good and tight, besides jordan mastery on mixing!
@@SilvioGazquez, it's seems you know for sure that's a real drummer playing real drums, probably you were there while tracking. I don't want to be a troll, but in my extensive experience recording awsome, and not so good drummers, that's not how actual drums sound like. Could I be wrong? Probably... But just, listen how good isolated this "real" snare sound, how machine like those toms fills and kick patterns... how clean and consistent is this hi hat. To my ears those sings reveal the programming.
But as I mentioned, I might be wrong. Just my 2 cents.
@@berseoldrik6683 Yep, you are wrong... Check out that drummer, his name is nathan bulla...
No Jordan.Snare is not coming.Sorry mate.I will not have a good snare sound.
HI, is the sample still available ?
UDrum is the best, I have 3 custom kits at my place. Paul does excellent work and is a great guy. Its awesome to see you using one of his drums as your goto sample! Awesome tips man!
I didnt receive the sample in the desc link.. Shame if its not available anymore
The sample link isn't working anymore :'( can someone pls send me the sample?
Excellent video and thank you for the sample - may I ask, how do you deal with ghost notes or medium strength notes? No one covers this when talking snare samples!
For the ghost notes, you have several options like automate te volume up in the real snare track, duplicate the real snare track and keep the ghost notes only, or even create a midi track with the ghosts notes only.
For the medium hits, if Trigger input is properly set you should be totally fine. Otherwise you can simply automate the volume of the oneshot down a few dB to keep the natural sound.
CAN U REUP THE SNAR SOUND ? 1 WEEK AND DOSENT WORK?
Love this! a GREAT shot to GREAT my DRUM MIXES
Is the sample not available anymore? I didn't receive it in my mail.
Could the sample please be made available again? Im in a big need of a good snare sample for my productions.
THIS.
Is this sample no longer available? I'm on the landing page but there is no download option?
It is not. Sam newsletter too :/
Samples sound killer together. Good to know that blending 2 or 3 snare samples is common, this is something I need to experiment with more - snares have always been tough part of my mix. Thanks Jordan!
Auras drummer is such a beast
The sample didn't arrive yet :(
Agh. Discovered your channel 4 yr too late to grab this sample. Regardless, thanks for all your work to educate and help us amateurs
Is there anyone nice enough to send me this sample?
What´s your mail?
Can I do this on EZdrummer 2? sorry I'm new to mixing drums. And the only one I have is ezdrummer2
@Hardcore music studio
The samples aren't available anymore. Kindly help please.
I have used Jordans U drum for a couple years- last time he gave it away- ammmmmazzzing
Can you send it
Very cool. I use Logic Pro, which has a plug-in which they call the Enveloper. It allows you to increase the attack and increase the release independently, or decrease them, and manipulate them lengthwise and velocity-wise. If a snare needs more attack, this brings it. If it needs more ring or more body, it brings that. Or it can shorten the ring or smooth out the attack. So it can have pretty much the same effect, and more, just by invoking this plug-in. That and EQ and compression can get you 99% of the way there, 95% of the time.
I believe that the sound and character of the snare is possibly the most important instrument in the mix, so I use this all the time, and it can you give a huge variety of sculpting capability to a snare or a kick, or even keyboards. I assume all DAWs have something equivalent.
The only thing it can't do is change the actual timbre of the snare sound. That has to be good already. There are a lot of snares in Logic, but they're just OK, they are not great. This plug-in makes them a lot better. For the other 5% of the time, I have been known to sample snares directly from other songs, lift them out, manipulate them until I get them the way I want them, then create a MIDI sample instrument with them, which can also be tuned. And of course sometimes I'll layer three different snare sounds together.
As far as having the sample sounds exactly the same on every hit if I don't mix them up a little bit, multiband compression in mastering takes care of much of that bc it manipulates the levels a little bit throughout the song, including the ratio of the lower sound of a snare to the higher sound of a snare. But there is also a humanize function which mildly manipulates the velocities, start times, and end times enough to get things sounding natural.
The Logic snares also have a round-robin feature built-in. So the only thing left, since snares are one-shots, would be an ability to shorten or lengthen snare hits randomly, but in real life, snare hits are pretty much always the same length. If you really need to do that, you can just automate the parameters of the Enveloper plug-in.
Dumb question alert! 🙂 If using Sd3 (metal drum expansions) do i need this??
Hey man, love this video. Unfortunately theres no way to download that sample anymore. Do you by chance have it anywhere else?
Hi, Jordan I tried to download the sample but I didn't receive it in the email. Thanks
I guess the sample are only available to members now.

Nice sound. Not in your face but solid BTW jv too funny it's my manicure

Great tutorial! Where abouts is the download?
what is the snares running after the beefing _-
Hi Jordan,
What's your usual settings on the Lofi for Snare?
Sounds great. How does this sound when it comes to dynamics? If it's a one shot sample, wouldn't it start to get like a machine gun and too robotic on snare rolls that are quieter and not as powerful as single hits?
Yup - it works best blended with other snares, live or samples, that have more dynamics.
The link is broken
Free drum sample? Take my money! ;)
Did you double or quad track the guitars? They sound huge.
I didn't track these guitars, just mixed. But no, they're just one left and one right. I never quad track
Sick! Do you have phase issues when you use Trigger or Drummagog to add one shots? How about flamming problems?
Hi man when you hav some time could send me the sample?
Link?
greetings teacher, from cuba
Niiiiiice. Thanks!
Where's the download?
Thank u for re-upping the sample!
Joey Sturgis sent me \m/

This sounds awesome, thank you so much for this!
This sounds fantastic man. Goes so well with the track.
Hey Jordan, I've signed up 3 times but I've never received the sample.
Am I missing anything?
check your spam folder?
@@Fire-Toolz I did, none of his emails go to spam, I received all the others.
snare sample never was sent to me mate! Would love to add this to my arsenal
I have the same problem
Any reason in particular for printing the sample to stereo instead of mono?
it has stereo room ambience baked in
Nice! Thanks Jordan.
why youtube mixing "pros" always do their tutorials using crappy machine like drum tracks? are this drums acoustic? if they are, you made it sound like my old roland td10 crappy library, just midi like sound. If not, why you even mix sounds already mixed? Do you ever mix real drums? cmon man, be a real mix man, mix real instrument. jesus.
..... these are live drums.
Why are you even on here if you don't like his style of mixing. Jordan is one of the biggest advocates in the scene today about not overdoing the drums to sound fake and kill the dynamics and whatnot. He even has basically a rant video about it... Can you please post YOUR tutorial on how to mix so that I can come and hate on it? 🙄
Where is the original creativity? Narrow down your library? So in ten years, EVERYBODY sounds alike. The snare sounds amazing, I can't deny that, but who wants to have any new artist watered down with the same snare, kick.... I'm just starting out with recording. I dont care how long it takes, I'm dialing in my own sounds and relying on my approach and attack to whatever instrument im physically playing on the recording to deliver the goods. I like your channel. Nothing against you persoanaly. Although you can learn some things here, I think this is a bad habit to get into.
ok boomer
Great as usual Jordan and many thanks for the excellent sample, just blended it with my recorded snare and it cuts right through just as you said.
