Thanks for this, I have ADHD so my attention is very rarely my own! After you mentioned setting your phone to greyscale I checked out the accessibility options in Windows 11 and there are actually some really nice ones! I recommend the following: 1. Color filter -> Greyscale 2. Contrast themes -> Dusk (adjust the background darkness to your preference) 3. Adjust your monitor contrast setting to something comfortable for your eyes 4. Set all Windows 11 notifications to "Alarms Only," at least during your work hours EDIT: This isn't an "attention" thing necessarily, but I also recommend setting your monitor to the highest possible refresh rate because it reduces LCD flicker that can cause eye strain and mental strain.
I am subtly convinced, Andy is a flower child :D His videos have started to dip towards a more philosophical/psychological aspects of things. And thats how we become more holistic beings
That’s so on point. Recently started meditation and setting out my intention for any given time period. Rough approximation is that I’m twice as productive, feel more accomplished and yet less drained by the work. Phone face down on silent!
that is absolutely true. There are many "incomes/entries" that goes into our mind, you need to control what comes inside and process it so you can grow. These things such as phones, can steal away that attention you need to process what goes inside your mind.
Before and after online classes I do 10 minutes of daily yoga with Kassandra (UA-cam channel) which is useful to give me energy to keep focus in class.
Thanks for these videos. I’m a PhD student starting on my second semester and your way of discussing how to go about these things is reassuring, validating, and encouraging. You really are helping my imposters syndrome and I feel so much more up to doing what I need to do!
Rather than going on my phone, I like to do puzzles but instead of puzzle apps on my phone that do nothing but try and get me to collect coins and watch ads, I have a physical puzzle book on the side table I can just grab. Stops me going on my phone and also keeps my mind active
I knit 😉 crochet, quilt and sew. I’m not a PhD student but I’m a studio artist going into grad school this year for Art Therapy and I found this video helpful.
Had this video in my "Watch later" for 2 years before finally watching today. Now in my 6th year of PhD program. Still hopeful that I'll finish instead of mastering out. Now feeling more optimistic (and intentional) that this thesis will get done! Time to go meditate.
With a B.S., I was a "scientist" in a medical research lab for many years, performing experiments directed by the "principle investigator." They now have post-docs in those sorts of jobs at the same rate of low pay and tedium, because there are too many people with PhDs who can't find jobs. Now that I am retired with Social Security to shore me up, barely, I have gotten into my own investigations into dress design. I want to "award" myself with a PhD in dress design in the same time it normally takes to accomplish the currently useless PhD. Problems include time structure, maintaining motivation, and overcoming resistance to creative meaningful work. I have greatly benefited from your videos.
Interesting perspective Andy. Just when I thought the key metric was time, now time is pointless if it’s low quality, hence attention is a more precise meaningful mindset. Thanks.👏
Something that helps me a lot for concentrating is to simply turn my phone off and block websites like youtube or Facebook. If I want to listen to music I'll just use Spotify or Soundcloud.
It’s great advice but I wonder how this constant intentional planning of your days affects your ability to be spontaneous with friends and family. I think we never can be if we want productivity. Do you have advice or solutions for that?
Damn... I do the same with my girlfriend (who is also phd student). And in the evening we usually chat about how unproductive and without energy we both feel. I will stop this habit as actually just causes anxiety of "not being productive"
I use Forest on my phone which shuts me out of my phone for a set amount of time and I get to build a forest, the dopamine from creating a tree is great
I'm guessing that for increased productivity, Andy only reads and loves comments for recent videos; hence the lack of love for comments younger than 10 months old for this video.
Hey Andy! I sometimes listen you your or other creator's videos while I do daily tasks like cleaning or job hunting etc. How is that affecting my attention span? I'm trying to consume a lot of varied content recently to make up for time lost inside my science bubble. I'm 24, fresh out of college looking for a job and feel like I'm in a race against time.
Thank you for the informative video, as always, Andy. By the way, I have just signed my email to the link. I am wondering why I can't click the "confirm your email" button. The same problem goes with using my secondary email address.
i've downloaded the declutter app.... now I've just got to avoid youtube... and youtube comments! I love the comment section way too much! People have the best jokes, insights etc in the comments XD
This video is so good! My decision point is to take my dog out. He has such a good vital clock. He is the only one who would force me to go out and make a pause. Plus, you can wander around your thoughts while you walk, and it counts as doing some exercise. Go get a pet to your local shelter :)
Great video! Btw I haven’t received any emails after I have confirmed my mail for the newsletter 2 weeks ago. Is there a repository where I can recover the past issues? Thanks

Its ironic im watching this instead of what im supposed to do

This is great advice Andy! Your content is amazing! I wish I watched your videos when I did my PhD!!
Thank you for sharing. I feel like you are speaking to me as a senior.
Hey Andyy!! I just love you so much just by looking at your videos. You're such a wholesome person.. STAY SAFE.. MUCH LOVE..

I'm scheduling a time for your videos. That way I'm controlling my social media time, aren't I? 😅 Great info!
I just did the same thing!

Every time I think what new could Andrew have to say now.. and then he throws his points at my face and proves my doubts wrong!😂 Love from India ♥️👀🙏
I can relate to all that you mentioned. Cheer! I'm on track!!!

Glad you think so!

I used to say to myself and my friends, "Have a productive day!" I stopped it.

Both of you are toxic af

Diverting your attention into an attention video
Awesome!
Does anyone know any alternatives for the app for IOS?

I'm going to go do something productive. I'm gonna go watch television.
Attention is all you need :D
I already do all the stuffs even though I am not Phd , I'm studying in Btech .

Hey Andy! Are you from Adelaide?!
Yes I am!
I cannot fail to see the irony here...
100% right...give me your attention!
@@DrAndyStapleton No worries, thank you though! I found the "do not disturb" scheduler on my phone because of it!
So... Enéas Carneiro can really speak English, huh? ⤴
No. I don't agree. I like some other new distraction to keep me going otherwise I am kind of going flat.
Your beard is well shaped.
_How doth I productively watcheth thy video with thine distracting beard?!_
Not a single white beard hair. Are you a doctorate for real ?
