Kate is one of a kind, her music videos are works of art. As someone who grew up with this music in 70s and 80s I'm thrilled a new generation are enjoying this. You must listen to Don't Give Up with Gabriel, but from Kate also do Cloudbusting, Hounds of Love, Babooshka, This Woman's Work, and The Man With the Child in his Eyes (which if memory serves she wrote when she was about 13!). Reacting to the Cloudbusting video would be great, it is a mini movie with the great Donald Sutherland and based on a true story which captured Kate's imagination. Worth reading about it before you watch! Keep up the good work guys. Watching you regularly from Scotland 💜
The video for "Cloudbusting" makes me wish she'd also gotten into acting, à la David Bowie and Sting.
She also sang with Peter Gabriel on his hit song "Games Without Frontiers" in 1980.
Kate is the first lady of Prog Pop, experimental and art rock she was so far ahead of the rest in the 70/ 80s in particular female artists. She wrote the songs, and choregraphed the videos a true genius❤💥
My favorite Album in 1985 was Hounds of Love ❤️ My favorite song from 1985 was probably Cloudbusting. My all time favorite Female Artist is Kate Bush. So happy for her.
You should really react to her official video for this song, Kate is a trained dancer and does an interpretive routine with a partner - it's incredible. And Kate is the Queen of prog/art rock. Hounds of Love is a masterpiece, split into two sides. Side A is about relationships and most of the tracks were hit singles. Side B is a 7 song conceptual suite entitled "The Ninth Wave," which describes a woman lost at sea at night in a lifejacket, struggling to survive. Each song describes part of her ordeal as she fights off death and slips in and out of consciousness. It is a masterpiece of progressive music. Kate has such a rich catalog, all of her albums are incredible and every song is different. Kate is still very relevant (before Stranger Things) she makes albums when she wants and takes her time (we fans are expecting her next album soon). She released 2 albums in 2011, and an incredible live album in 2016 ("Before The Dawn"), which was a series of 22 concerts (and sold out over 100,000 tickets in less than 15 minutes, a record for the Hammersmith Apollo). The year of the concerts (2014) Kate became the first woman to have 8 albums in the Top 40 charts at the same time (third behind only Elvis and the Beatles).

As a long-term Kate fan, happy to be second. I'm never, ever, this early. Here because I know I'm gonna get an intelligent reaction. Goosebumps every time Kate sings.
Kate does a duet with Peter Gabriel called "Don't give up" that is absolutely beautiful. The whole video they are in an embrace.

What's interesting if you really listen to the production, instruments, arrangements of "Running up that Hill" you hear Peter Gabriel all over it. Not sure who started out as a fan of who, but they both compliment each other in so many musical and creative ways. I love both videos/songs- hard to choose a favorite. Kate and Peter are their own genres- what if they had joined forces and formed another band ;)
Yes you can hear peters influence in the drums. He hated cymbals and there are none.

I was a senior in high school in 85. I remember this song being on MTV when they played videos and I was mesmerized. it was so different including the video.
Hounds of Love is one of my favourite albums of all time. The Ninth Wave is the most original piece of music you’ll ever hear. As everyone has said, Kate is one of a kind. And to think, David Gilmour, through personal association, discovered her.

The second side, also called "The Ninth Wave" should be listened to as one continuous piece.

i have been in awe and admiration of the Kate bush story since she simply burst into our lives with wuthering Heights all those years ago, it shocked many of us and made us stop and look what hell is this we had never heard any thing like it in the UK, being the first female singer song writer to sweep the charts at no1 she changed the music industry for women in the UK for ever, she gave us classical literature, historical folk lore and political insight into the dystopian workings of organizations like the FBI with cloud bursting in her song writing, showed female artists to get on and do it their own way, she must of been well educated in proper good Education and well read at such a young age to have had such a huge Catalogue of songs even before she was seventeen, her talent was that incredible she took a 12 year break to have children and raise a family, then announce a string of comeback concerts that sold out in a matter of seconds a few years back, she is a truly one off person that educates and entertains at the same times comes along every now and then, a true superstar for sure,

Hi Guys, as well as her albums Kate Bush made many impressive music videos. The best being "Cloudbusting" starring Hollywood actor Donald Sutherland. In the 1980's she released a vhs video of all the music videos she had done at that time. One of my favourites after "Cloudbusting" is "The Dreaming". She does all the choreography on all her videos. I still have the vhs which is still great to watch. [ I presume it's now on dvd but never looked if it is ] There is a track from "The Kick Inside" which at only 2mins 41 secs really grabs your emotions.>> "The Man with the child in his eyes". Love the song's underlying galloping feel blended with a euphoric aim. Like Rundgren and Nyro, Kate was always largely below the commercial radar screen because of her strong artistic nature. This song always stands up nicely to repeated playing.

Thank you for the attention you are giving Kate. I have been a fan since her debut in 1978 with Wuthering Heights. When Hounds Of Love was released in 1985 it was of a total different leage than what was before. It was a thrill to watch your reaction last year to The Ninth Wave (side b of the album). Kate is now recognized by a whole new generation as a very special artist because of Stranger Things. Kate has acknowledged this fact on her website and in a BBC radio interview very recently. Another very special track is The Sensual World (1989) the video for it is mesmerizing and simple atvthe same time. The song is based upon great English literature, like Wuthering Heights was.

Back in 1985, this is the song that made me love Kate Bush!! She deserves all the love she is getting now, she is a one of an kind artist, there is no one like her in music.
I still have my 45 single of this song from 1985! It's such a great, dramatic song - drew me in at 16.
This was my introduction to Kate Bush back in '85. It's still one of my favorite albums of all time. The second side/half is a connected suite of songs called the Ninth Wave. Imo, one of the greatest pieces of music ever made.

Wonderful. I'd suggest a lengthy look at the phenomenal "The Dreaming" perhaps her most experimental album. Sat In Your Lap is amazing as is the title track. The vocal performances alone are mind bending. Enjoy and TY again!

Her most experimental album (and my favorite) is The Dreaming which showcases some very interesting vocal work. I think you guys would really find it intriguing.

I can totally relate to the kids who discover Kate Bush today. When I was a kid, I heard "Wuthering Heights" and was totally stunned - I never had heard someone singing like that on such a weird and wonderfull music. She was something special and 45 years later, she still is!
I first discovered Kate Bush from here compilation album The Whole Story - So many great cuts.
Since then I've enjoyed her theatrical creativity and delivery.
Wow is a funny song about an actor a little too into himself; Experiment IV is a scary Sci-Fi "movie"; Cloudbursting has an interesting cameo from Donald Sutherland and is inspirational; The Man is the Child in His Eyes always gets me.

The thing with Kate Bush is she keeps your interest from start to finish in her albums and it’s like reading a particularly thrilling thriller that you devour and can’t wait for the next page.
Kate does that to you,if you really listen,the intricacies are very rewarding.
David Gilmour was astonished at her talent when she was 14/15,no wonder he endorsed her and helped her.

On the collaboration front, I recommend Rocket's Tail from Kate Bush's album The Sensual World. The song features David Gilmour, Kate's discoverer and early mentor, on guitar. It also features backing vocals by a traditional Bulgarian ensemble called Trio Bulgarka. The combination of those two elements with Kate's voice is pretty sublime.

The drummer is Stuart Elliot, who was also the drummer starting on album no 3 of The Alan Parsons Project, he was also with Cockney Rebel. BTW on the first album of Kate Bush was also David Paton and Ian Bairnson, also the Alan Parsons Project oríginal musicians.

I'm a 'newcomer' and a french fan of your delightful 'couple reactions'... and also a huge longtime Kate Bush fan (I'm 52, guys, oh-my-god, but no older than 25 in my head ^^), not to mention that I'm a Pop/Prog/Rock/Jazz passionate and keys/guitar player. I was fortunate to see Kate Bush on her first, and only, live tour, in 1979. My favourite albums by her are Lionheart (78), Never For Ever (80) and Hounds of Love (85). Check out the video for 'Cloudbusting', featuring Donald Sutherland. The collaboration with Peter Gabriel, 'Don't Give Up', is just sublime.
Lex mentioned imagining jogging to Kate Bush back in the day. Coincidently, The first Sony walkman was introduce on this day- July 1st 1979 !!! and absolutely transformed the way we listened to music back in the 80's onwards. Portable audio became huge and so did cool headphones and cassettes and home recording and mixtapes. The record companies complained that home taping was killing music. In fact it was doing the exact opposite. (like UA-cam Now) Thanks guys. You could do worse than finish listening to this album

1985, a great year for music.
It's largely forgotten now, but many people first heard this song on the soundtrack of a 1988 movie "The Chocolate War." I've long considered Kate Bush as the female answer to Peter Gabriel.
Welcome to the Church of Kate! There is something so unique to the drumming of the 80s sound. I actually literally bumped into Kate at around this time. I was working on a photo shoot at a rental studio in NY, and as we were packing up to go, I was on the landing outside the studio when a door opened to the studio next door and out comes Kate Bush with a few of her crew, apparently shooting a video. It was like, “Oh, hello there!” “Hello!” smiles and then we were off, but it was a very cool encounter, and so typical of NY. 🎶🎵
I believe you have done a few songs from Hounds of Love before. Maybe you should react to the whole album! If not, at least "Cloudbusting". That's a must. But Kate is an albums artist. It's always best to hear all her songs in the context of her albums.
IMHO, she has four masterpieces:
Never For Ever (1980) -- whimsical, lush, gorgeous
The Dreaming (1982) -- highly experimental, dense, dark
Hounds of Love (1985) -- warm, lush, moving
Aerial (2005) -- calming, sparse, moving

Kate Bush has been my favorite artists for decades, and it's so exciting to see her finally get her due. I believe you did the entire song suite from the Hounds of Love album called The Ninth Wave already, but I would check out the title track, Hounds of Love, one of my favorite songs of all time. Other great songs include The Big Sky, This Woman's Work, The Sensual World, Love & Anger, Sat in Your Lap, Cloudbusting... so many more. Her duet with Peter Gabriel -- Don't Give Up, is amazing as well. Any song you choose will be worth listening to.
You mentioned Pink Floyd -- did you know that David Gilmour helped get her started in the70's. He plays on several of her songs. He also sings on an amazing song with her called Pull Out the Pin.
I knew this album was a 'classic' from the moment I first heard it in 1985!
This was a BIG alternative club dance hit along with songs like West End Girls by Pet Shop Boys, Blue Monday by New Order, Fascination by Human League, Let Me Go by Heaven 17 and Emperor's New Clothes by Sinead O'Conner. It used to pack the floor and you can certainly see why. Great reaction y'all!
The most unique artist, phenomenal song, 100/200 years from now she will be revered.
Kate in her compositions is famous for the musical "wash" she creates and runs in the background while layering different vocal elements. Her command of production really made working with her a dream. People who loved this song back when it was first released are unique. To many others it was unbearable to listen to. The other thing Kate's fans are known for are being a bit bookish and nerdy because so many of her lyrics are pulled from literature - - Wuthering Heights and King of the Mountain and Moments of Pleasure....
Well Thank You Abbie (LOL). When I first heard this on the radio a couple of times in 85 I ran out and bought the 45 single.
Kate is very much the full package: she learnt interpretative dance with Lindsay Kemp, who taught David Bowie, and mime training as well. It is Kate who is dancing here. And there is a link to Peter Gabriel (as you know now with their duet Don't Give Up). It would be worth looking at some of her later work, which is probably more accessible, although still quite cerebral: The Sensual World. This Woman's Work and Moments of Pleasure are all beautiful. She's a musical genius!
I loved this video , Kate has been my favorite female artist since I was 12 and loved what you said about the Neverending Story. It’s still my favorite film from my youth and the soundtrack is amazing .
I'm gonna tell it to you straight. If you two don't listen to her song "The Fog" from her Sensual World album, you will be forever missing one of the most lush, moving, breathtaking, stunningly incredible pieces of music you will ever hear.

This was 80's but a very different 80's. Art. Non commercial but beautifully hauntingly crafted. Watch the evocative video version as well. She dances in it-she was a wonderful modern-interpretive dancer as well-SO multi talented. Try the track The Sensual World from the album of the same name-completely different, driving rhythm, sensual almost middle eastern type feel...It's always been a hard toss up for me between which Kate Bush production is my favorite Hound Of Love or The Sensual World...
..and of course the fact that it was a feature song in S4 Eps 4 of Stranger Things really brought it back to the forefront!!
Please do Cloudbusting! It's brilliant. BTW, the drummer on this song is Stuart Elliot. He was one of Kates favourite drummers and played on many of her bigger hits (incl. Cloudbusting). He also drummed on 10 of Alan Parsons Project's albums from the 'Pyramid' album onwards. He was the original drummer for Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel.
I love Kate Bush. She is also a great performer. Hearing her is only half of her greatness.

This song had a big impact in 1985. Nothing else like it. I loved it! One of my all-time favorites. Kate's voice really cut through all the noise. Her and Michael Stipe from R.E.M. and Robert Smith from the Cure really stood out.
This album was the first I bought with my own money, my first paycheck, it changed my musical life.

Kate was one person who pioneered the use of the Fairlight CMI sampling synth in her music. One of my favorite performances of hers is her "This Woman's Work" from the BBC1 Terry Wogan TV show in 1989. Many people think that song is by Maxwell, who had a hit with his cover. That song shows off her range, and it starts out with her just singing and playing piano. If you do the one with Peter Gabriel, try the video. It was a unique way to film a duet.

Kate Bush is definitely one of a kind, and I love her songs and voice. There are three songs you need to hear from her second album "Lionheart". They are "In The Warm Room", "Wow", and "In Search Of Peter Pan". All three are worth discovering. You may not see people listing these songs in the comments, but her first two albums are fantastic, and have many great songs. Her first album "The Kick Inside" is a must hear also.
Her Album "The hounds of love", which this song was on, is her best work imo. "Hello Earth" was not released as a single, and was on the B side "9th wave" section of the Album, but it is a great song that few people have heard.

I would recommend Kate Bush The Man with the child in his eyes. She wrote when only 13 and first recorded it at 16.
This woman’s work is one you will not regret reacting to it is a killer ballad
i was a 17 years old girl from Germany, when this song got into the charts! But the first time I heard her was actually one year earlier with Babooska! At that time, we only had our radio, paciently waiting, when it would be played again! When the anouncement came, next song is.... we had our fingers already on "record" of our cassette recorder to push the button, in hope to not record too early so that the the voice of the anouncer wasn´t in the way, and to hope, the song wasn´t cut off too early for news! That was our days! No You tube, no DVD´s just Cassettes and Records!
Later on, they started the charts on TV once a week on Saturday and we fought with hour parents to watch this program for one hour, while my dad wanted to watch soccer! This was the breake through for videos!
But man, we was free to so many things that are lost for the people now with all that tecnics, smartphones, computers and what not!
We were truly living each and every moment and were so fortuned, so lucky, to grow up in this times!
Somewhat funny to think your first introduction to Kate Bush a year ago were four songs from "The Ninth Wave" which I consider - together with the entire album "The Dreaming" - her most experimental/progressive work (which also happens to be my overall favourite by her), whereas most people's first contact with her music might be one of her more "commercial" single hits. While I had already heard her single hits from 1980 onward on the radio and seen the videoclips to them on TV when they came out, it wasn't before 1990 - in my early twenties and at a time in which had been listening nearly exclusively to metal for several years - that I became a fan of her music and bought all albums available back then within less than two weeks. I still like her most experimental stuff the most. I'm also very thankful for her collaboration with the Trio Bulgarka on three songs of "The Sensual World" (my favourite being "Rocket's Tail"), because I loved these female voices so much that only three weeks after buying this album, I bought my first album by Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares (which nowadays go by the English name The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices, under which they have also released an album with Lisa Gerrard) and I have attended several of their concerts since then, which I'd consider some of my best live experiences until now. My favourite song in 1985? I can't decide between Helloween's "Ride the Sky" and Fates Warning's "Epitaph". As for non-metal, I'd go with Kate Bush's "Hello Earth" (or "Waking the Witch" or "Jig of Life"), though that would be favourite non-metal song "from" 1985, since I hadn't heard "The Ninth Wave" yet in 1985. Favourite non-metal song "in" 1985 would be "Love Like Blood" by Killing Joke. Finally, to those who like Kate Bush's playful/experimental vocals the most, I'd like to reommend the eponymous album by the one-off Norwegian project Tactile Gemma, especially the song "Creepy-Crawlies". - Once again an overlong comment, thus less likely to get read, but I couldn't help it.
Dave Gilmour discovered Kate Bush when she was 16. He Produced her demos and has said 3 of these were used on her first album, i dot remember which. I think Kate is accompanied by h Adler on some records.
In 1985 i was livibg in Guatemala and did not know of Kate Busush, i was mind blown by Ceilis Cruz Miriam Makeba.
Please do more Kate Bush in the future! She's really one of the most artistic and creative solo artists of all time. I'm a Prog nut, and like many Prog nuts, I know that Kate Bush is fantastic and comparable to other art rock artists like Peter Gabriel or David Bowie.

The "Ninth Wave" is one of the greatist concept peices in rock history. It needs to be a made into a movie, but only if Kate has complete artistic control of the project.

You both inadvertently touched upon Kate's greatest masterpiece, The Ninth Wave, but only covered the first two sections, And 'Dream of Sheep' and 'Under Ice'. This is a seven part epic that begins with a woman stranded , floating in the sea trying to stay awake so she won't drown...she slips into her subconscious and we slip down along with her, deeper into the depths. Is it the threshold of death that has been crossed, or are we trapped in between states of conciousness? The series of seven sections take us on a harrowing journey...this is a work of pure genius and it is Kate Bush's opus...

Was this my favourite song in '85? ABSOLUTELY! I wore this album out after a year and had to buy another copy. The video is still one of my favourites too, it is just her and a man, in a modern dance routine. She is also a dancer and choreographer.
She was asked to perform this song for entrance of the athletes ate the Closing Ceremonies of the London Olympics, but declined. They used it but recorded.
A funny personal coincidence. There are 2 artists which I didn't "get into" in their prime until later in my life. David Bowie & Kate Bush. For me, while they are quite different they have one thing in common. I began to appreciate each of them...only after hearing more & more of their wide range of songs. Each of them rarely had individual "hit songs", but the creativity and wide range of their artistic vision can only be fully appreciated with a "wide view". The coincidence came after...in reading about Kate's beginnings, the first concert she went to as a young teen was Bowie as "Ziggy Stardust". He was her early inspiration.

I first heard Wuthering Heights and her voice haunted me. I obsessed over her first album until I knew all of the songs by heart, then moved on to the next and next. Hounds of Love is my husband's favorite album, but it took him a long time to appreciate Kate Bush. I had to break him down listening to it nonstop. hahaha 'The Kick Inside' 'Lionheart' 'Never for Ever' 'The Dreaming' -- just incredible. You should watch her live at Hammersmith, her performances are awesome to see. Her dancing and movement. :)

She rapidly became a mega star with her very first song she wrote when she was in her early teens. David Gilmore of Pink Floyd asked her to sing on one of his projects. Very influential artist and she was highly regarded for her honest approach to her music, writing and sing. She's fantastic!!!
Yes, you must do the ‘Don’t Give Up’ duet with Peter Gabriel. But I would also recommend doing ‘Cloudbusting’ from the same Hounds of Love album, but you must watch the iconic music video with that one (also for the Peter Gabriel duet).
The first time I heard Kate's voice was in a Peter Gabriel song called Don't give up, and it was a wonderful experience. And then I discovered Wuthering Heights, which is bases on a novel and I was lost in her music.

As you like David Gilmour, there is a live version of this featuring Kate with David on Guitar and his son in law who played Bass on the pulse concert with Pink Floyd, worth a look.
'Hounds of Love' is a phenomenal album. There isn't a weak or wasted track on the entire album, and it's amazing how cohesive the entire record is, despite being separated into two distinct elements. It's one of those albums, much like Pink Floyd, that has to be listened to as an entire piece, but can still be enjoyed as separate songs. Kate's vocal range and style is amazing, and she is quite simply unique and brilliant.
