🧾 RECIPE FOR HATCHING BRINE SHRIMP
    0) If you don't know how to install the Ziss brine shrimp hatchery, read this blog post: www.aquariumco...
    1) Fill Ziss hatchery with water all the way up to 1.5 inches from the top. (Don't dechlorinate it.) Leave a gap from the top so that the popping bubbles don't stick eggs onto the lid.
    2) Add 2 tablespoons of marine salt and up to 1 tablespoon of brine shrimp eggs. (Marine salt gets me a much better hatch rate than aquarium salt because of all the extra minerals it contains.) Tap the brine shrimp spoon in the water to shake off all the eggs that stick to it. Store the rest of the brine shrimp eggs in the freezer (or in the fridge if you plan on using them this week).
    3) Add equipment (heater and air pump) and close lid. (After testing lots of heaters, I've found a small, tube-shaped heater is best because it doesn't impede the water circulation and cause eggs to get stuck.) Plug in the air pump, and then plug in the heater after 10-30 minutes of temperature acclimation. I set my heater to 82°F.
    4) After 24 hours, unplug and remove the equipment and lid. Rinse everything to remove any eggs.
    5) Turn off the room lights and shine an LED light or flashlight at the base of the hatchery. This causes the brine shrimp to swim downwards toward the valve at the bottom.
    6) Open the valve, and drain out the brine shrimp into a container or through a sieve. If the sieve starts to overflow, temporarily shut off the valve and press the bottom of the screen lightly with your fingers. This breaks the surface tension or something and gets the water to flow through again. Resting the sieve on the sink drain also helps to drain the water more quickly.
    7) Feed the shrimp to your fish.
    8) Wash the hatchery and scrub with a bottle brush if needed. Wash the sieve with warm/hot water to melt off any salt on the screen.
    9) Start at the beginning with Step 1 and repeat the steps to hatch out the next batch of brine shrimp.

Hmmm … Really brought back some memories when I had an aquarium as a kid and they sold something ‘new’ called Brine Shrimp eggs. Just used a cake pan filled with salt water (didn’t have any sea salt) an aerator, hose that teed off the aquarium pump, sprinkled some eggs on the water surface and waited. When the shrimp was hatched, poured the water thru a cloth net and flipped it into the aquarium. A few shakes and dinner is served! Everything easy- peasy, nothing fancy like this video and I got lots of shrimp. Eventually I setup a smaller saltwater aquarium to keep the Brine Shrimp in. They grew to about 1/4” and the larger fish really liked them.

I use brine shrimp dishes. I fill them with water ones a week. Every morning I put a scoop of brine shrimp eggs in the dish. There is a ring to separate the egg shells from the newly hatched shrimp and a tiny bucket to catch the shrimp. Super easy. No light, heater or anything. I have dwarf seahorses and I have to have a constant supply for the fry. I bought them from a company called Brine Shrimp Direct but Amazon has them.

It is still possible to overfeed. I hatch the bs and then I freeze them into small ice blocks mixed with their usual flakes. And then you can also hatch a big batch, this is useful for someone with a busy life. And bs does not have pain receptors, so it is not cruel... I also freeze a half and half mixture of mashed peas (skins removed) and mashed broccoli, this is a good laxative for constipated fish (also relieves early signs of dropsy)

I tested several brands of heaters, and this 25W heater had the best hatch rate. amzn.to/3q1cpUp Eggs don't get stuck to it as much, it's short enough that the water flow is not blocked as much, and it comes with a digital thermometer that is much easier to read than the analog thermometer that came with the hatchery. I tried this other, small rectangular heater, but for some reason, it had poor hatch rate so I think tube-shaped heaters are the best for this hatchery.

Just to be clear - she sieves the brine shrimp out to dump into the fish tank, right? So she just has basically a bucket of brine shrimp eggs that hatch out within the requisite 24 hours? How much do you feed each fish!! I have so many questions!

Going to recommend the brine shrimp hatchery from Artemia. No need for any pump or heater and can harvest for two days. Much smaller and out of the way product.

    • @BryceJob
      @BryceJob 2 роки тому

Hatch rate is also not even close to the quantity you get. If you have a tank or two sure, but if you’re running 10+ and need to hatch everyday the Artemia can’t keep up.

Very. If you're going to be hatching eggs all the time like me, I like the sturdiness of the Ziss hatchery and how easy it is to clean. But if you're only going to be hatching eggs every one in a while, the San Francisco Bay hatchery is cheaper and works well too. 👍

They eat the algea and continue to grow and reproduce
