🧾 RECIPE FOR HATCHING BRINE SHRIMP
0) If you don't know how to install the Ziss brine shrimp hatchery, read this blog post: www.aquariumco...
1) Fill Ziss hatchery with water all the way up to 1.5 inches from the top. (Don't dechlorinate it.) Leave a gap from the top so that the popping bubbles don't stick eggs onto the lid.
2) Add 2 tablespoons of marine salt and up to 1 tablespoon of brine shrimp eggs. (Marine salt gets me a much better hatch rate than aquarium salt because of all the extra minerals it contains.) Tap the brine shrimp spoon in the water to shake off all the eggs that stick to it. Store the rest of the brine shrimp eggs in the freezer (or in the fridge if you plan on using them this week).
3) Add equipment (heater and air pump) and close lid. (After testing lots of heaters, I've found a small, tube-shaped heater is best because it doesn't impede the water circulation and cause eggs to get stuck.) Plug in the air pump, and then plug in the heater after 10-30 minutes of temperature acclimation. I set my heater to 82°F.
4) After 24 hours, unplug and remove the equipment and lid. Rinse everything to remove any eggs.
5) Turn off the room lights and shine an LED light or flashlight at the base of the hatchery. This causes the brine shrimp to swim downwards toward the valve at the bottom.
6) Open the valve, and drain out the brine shrimp into a container or through a sieve. If the sieve starts to overflow, temporarily shut off the valve and press the bottom of the screen lightly with your fingers. This breaks the surface tension or something and gets the water to flow through again. Resting the sieve on the sink drain also helps to drain the water more quickly.
7) Feed the shrimp to your fish.
8) Wash the hatchery and scrub with a bottle brush if needed. Wash the sieve with warm/hot water to melt off any salt on the screen.
9) Start at the beginning with Step 1 and repeat the steps to hatch out the next batch of brine shrimp.

*If you're only hatching brine shrimp occasionally and not every day, you may want to use the San Francisco Bay brine shrimp hatchery instead. Here's my tutorial about it here: **ua-cam.com/video/Mr-NhXwy_Kc/v-deo.html*
Hi could I please ask what brand of brine shrimp hatchery that is?
@@nickbailey5201 In my video, I used the Ziss hatchery, which is linked in the description.
@@GirlTalksFish thankyou very much 😊
@@GirlTalksFish I was wondering if you had an opinion on this. Hillstream loaches with Angelfish I was looking at a good algae eater but I wasn’t sure if they would be a good fit or not

I manipulate the life and death of small shrimps to feed my fish.
Yup welcome to the hobby
But on a more serious note some types of fish(mostly cichlids) eat their own fry lol, and brine shrimp are very healthy and provide enough nutrients for a breeding pair
I control the rate at which shrimp die.
They’re shrimp? and their fish eat them?? we eat animals and breed them for that reason so how is her doing this so bad??

Whoa I just flashed on a memory I haven't thought of in 50+ years...
My mom used to buy baggies of brine shrimp from the pet shop for our fish tank.

I thought brine shrimps are pets, and I was lik"e, why the hell he putting those with big fishes, they will eat them".. Realised only after reading comments. Not sure if mentioned about it in his narration. Its pretty difficult to understand this version of English.
This is so nostalgic! When I was in primary school, I was in charge of feeding the baby clown fish in our school's aquarium. We had to use a similar system, omg I love this! :)
i don’t even have any fish but i just live watching videos about them!! thank you love, stay safe 💗💗💗
I still have that green “aquarium” from the sea monkey scam. Back in the late 90’s, my aunt thought it would be a great thing to gift 11 year old me. To be honest, I did have fun for a few days though.
Hmmm … Really brought back some memories when I had an aquarium as a kid and they sold something ‘new’ called Brine Shrimp eggs. Just used a cake pan filled with salt water (didn’t have any sea salt) an aerator, hose that teed off the aquarium pump, sprinkled some eggs on the water surface and waited. When the shrimp was hatched, poured the water thru a cloth net and flipped it into the aquarium. A few shakes and dinner is served! Everything easy- peasy, nothing fancy like this video and I got lots of shrimp. Eventually I setup a smaller saltwater aquarium to keep the Brine Shrimp in. They grew to about 1/4” and the larger fish really liked them.
This setup is incredible if you’re hatching everyday. I just use an incandescent lamp for my heat source instead of having to have a heater in there.
Love the simplicity and clarity of this video! I just hatched some this weekend and while it took 36+ hours to hatch, I'm sure that's because of my temperature.
My heart rate is elevated after multiple watchings, concise, instructive, fun video!
You pronounced sieve just fine. I’ve heard people say both “seev” and “siv”.
I dont think it was the reason of pronouncing it wrong. Siv and sieve tend to just mean different ways of doing it
@@ARM0RP0WER hmm but I don't think a siv is a thing? aside from "simian immunodeficiency virus"
Tomato tomato.
Never seen seive spelled as "siv" though.. weird
It's "siv".
I use brine shrimp dishes. I fill them with water ones a week. Every morning I put a scoop of brine shrimp eggs in the dish. There is a ring to separate the egg shells from the newly hatched shrimp and a tiny bucket to catch the shrimp. Super easy. No light, heater or anything. I have dwarf seahorses and I have to have a constant supply for the fry. I bought them from a company called Brine Shrimp Direct but Amazon has them.
I admire your diligence in cleaning the blender every time. I gave up doing that almost immediately. But I do use the same method of a heater and temp controller.
You have the most relaxing voice
Very helpful vid. I’ve watched so many and still struggle with baby brine shrimp. Hopefully this will work for me🧐🐌🌱🐟
Good luck! Lemme know how it goes.
This is so cool!! What measures do you take to prevent the effects of overfeeding?
My thoughts as well.
If you rinse them like her it’s nearly impossible to overdose bbs. Just use common sense.
It is still possible to overfeed. I hatch the bs and then I freeze them into small ice blocks mixed with their usual flakes. And then you can also hatch a big batch, this is useful for someone with a busy life. And bs does not have pain receptors, so it is not cruel... I also freeze a half and half mixture of mashed peas (skins removed) and mashed broccoli, this is a good laxative for constipated fish (also relieves early signs of dropsy)
Wow way fast video! Will have to watch it multiple times! Which is great for your algorithm! Smart video, good quality!
I don't even own a fish but I enjoy watching your videos 😂❤️
I wouldn’t make that effort to feed myself
me either... but i would make that effort for my darling little fishes
lol this is the best video about ziss hatchery but its funny how fast Irene went, to the point not like some other videos that I fell asleep multiple times trying to decide if it was worth the price, so Irene.... thanks to you I will place my order from Aquarium Co-op. :)
I just watched some of your videos about medicating fish and I heard your voice on this video and was like heeeeeey I just watched you. And yep that’s the bathroom. I felt a little stalkerish lol anyway your so informative and I love it.

Well daaaaayuuuum!! U can actually raise shrimp at home like off grid?!!! This like the most amazing short I've seen thus far. I wanna ask how long does it take shrimp to reach maturity using this method?
What a neat little kit.
It's been a while, Irene. I hope you're well.
Its so cool how there are that many Baby Brine shrimp with only 1 tablespoon of eggs!
It's crazy how thick and orange it turns! I only hatch out 1/2 tsp each day, but since I have to make the recipe every day, I like the sturdiness of the Ziss hatchery compared to the DIY ones using soda bottles.
Why don't you have to dechlorinate?
@@andrewbecker2998 from what I've read, yhe chlorine helps to break/dissolve the cyst shells so you get a higher hatch rate. 👍
Clear, conscise and easy to follow.

Thank you so much! 🤗

I just got this and I love it! What wattage/brand heater do you recommend for this? I don't want to overheat the water.
I tested several brands of heaters, and this 25W heater had the best hatch rate. amzn.to/3q1cpUp Eggs don't get stuck to it as much, it's short enough that the water flow is not blocked as much, and it comes with a digital thermometer that is much easier to read than the analog thermometer that came with the hatchery. I tried this other, small rectangular heater, but for some reason, it had poor hatch rate so I think tube-shaped heaters are the best for this hatchery.
@@GirlTalksFish AWSOME! Thanks for your quick response and all your informative videos. Has helpped a lot in my Guppy planted tank.
Question. Don't you worry about about using house space (like the bathroom) where soap is used often for fish stuff? Or am I just being overly cautious?
Nah, I'm not really worried about it, since I'm the only one cleaning the hatchery and I'm careful not to get close to the soap. The bathtub is mostly used for aquarium stuff at this point anyway. 😂
@@GirlTalksFish I appreciate the answer. I think sometimes I overthink... Which makes the hobby harder... And often less fun. Although a dedicated bathroom or basement sink would be awesome!!!
Just so you know, seive is correct. A word with french origins I believe.
The word is pronounced seev or siv depending on how fancy you feel lol 😉
@K Slay Are you ok?
Old English sife (noun), of West Germanic origin; related to Dutch zeef and German Sieb. It is also pronounced siv as in viv not seev as in leave 👍
@@richardbramall7909 Finally some useful input (and someone who knows how to google) 🤣🤣👊🏻👍🏻
I loved giving my kind, innocent, cute fish brine shrimp and watch them become carnivores 🥰 Out was a fun process, but this device makes it less complicated. Thanks!
It's like the tiny version of what Oregon Coast Aquarium uses...and I mean tiny version. Take a behind the scene tour or volunteer to see.💙🌻
Try water changes, I have triple red apistogramma cacatuoides that I've been trying to breed (mom keeps eating the eggs). Once a week I'll do a water change and a day or so later I'll have eggs. Also I feed a variety of foods.
in Malaysia we just use bottle.. cut the bottom and use pipeline to canister(oxcigen)
That's done everywhere in the world... 😑
You are so awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you
Yay I love appistagramas
When I first got my co-op eggs, they hatched at a very high rate, but lately, I've had a lot of unhatched eggs in the bottom of the hatchery. I've had the eggs for about 3 months now and I've kept them dry and in the freezer the whole time. Any ideas on why I am getting less to hatch?
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that! That hasn't happened to me so far. Is there anything blocking the bottom of the hatchery or is the flow not strong enough to stir the eggs stuck down there? I would send some pictures to shipping@aquariumcoop.com and see if Customer Service can help.
@@GirlTalksFish Thanks for the response, Irene! No, nothing has changed with the process. Getting plenty of flow to the very bottom of the hatchery. I'll mess around a bit though and maybe adjust where the tube ends or even use an airstone, just to change it up and see if it makes a difference. I'd hate to bother Candi and the team at the Co-Op until I've tested things out more. :)
Irene. I was told the Api aquarium salt is the wrong salt to use. Correct me if i am wrong.😳🥺
Love your videos
Any advice on how to store extra hatched brine shrimps
Thoughts on brine shrimp versus daphnia?
Everyone in the comments that say it’s cruel to breed brine shrimp just to feed them to fish don’t know a thing about nature that’s literally the circle of frickin life
I wonder how many you wash down the drain 😂😂
When they grow up in the sewer they're not shrimpy anymore
None that’s what the sieve is for ☺️
I'm curious if your salinity levels raise much with the shrimp brine or if you have a way of flushing them?
Actually, I do rinse out the shrimp after I filter them through the sieve, but I don't find that the salinity level changes much at all.
Just to be clear - she sieves the brine shrimp out to dump into the fish tank, right? So she just has basically a bucket of brine shrimp eggs that hatch out within the requisite 24 hours? How much do you feed each fish!! I have so many questions!
Dwarf Cichlids. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING FISH. COCKATOOS Were my weakness.
My little boys 'aqua dragons' I bought for him for his 6th bday from Walmart weren't impressive at all.Except this 1 superhero of a brine shrimp that literally lived for months!!!When I noticed that it had expired I didn't have the💜 to tell my son...
Going to recommend the brine shrimp hatchery from Artemia. No need for any pump or heater and can harvest for two days. Much smaller and out of the way product.
Hatch rate is also not even close to the quantity you get. If you have a tank or two sure, but if you’re running 10+ and need to hatch everyday the Artemia can’t keep up.
Why do you get rid of the previous days brine shrimp? Just curious to get a better understanding
I suggest make the air bubbles sttonger it will hatch less than 24hrs
Are frozen brine shrimp cubes a good substitute for live brine shrimp?
Depends. For say a community tank yeah, but breeding fish, not really.
Hey nice vide, can I feed my fresh water fishes with the salt on it?
this is the best😍👍🏻
Nice green terror. Favorite cichlid.
Moment of silence for all the lost baby shrimp
I always pronounce it "seeve" by accident too 😂
For all these kits I see use Tap water not purified. What’s the reason for this? Is my triple filtered water I use for my fish not good either? I think it’s osmosis filter, three mini tanks.
So cool!
Hmm. Did it work?
I havent looked, however I am sure plenty of proud boys came to inform you that, happily they knew- its pronounced 'sivh' xD
What wattage heater do you use! The ziss hatcher is so small I was worried it would make brine shrimp soup with a heater
What are you breeding them for? Is it for food or tank cleaning?
The brine shrimp? They're to be food for the fish, and the apistogrammas (what will eat the brine shrimp) are bred for most likely profit.
@@smolfryz ah I see thanks. I forgot I even commented lmao
This was very helpful for me even though i am not breeding fish but this information will be helpful in the future
Good work, looks like a simple to run setup?
Very. If you're going to be hatching eggs all the time like me, I like the sturdiness of the Ziss hatchery and how easy it is to clean. But if you're only going to be hatching eggs every one in a while, the San Francisco Bay hatchery is cheaper and works well too. 👍
Where can i get this hatchery? I’m from Philippines. I’d like to feed my bettas & tetras live foods.
so all of this hatching steps are for feeding the fishes
i never thought of that
Life of a baby brine shrimp

I tried mine and its 3 and 1/5 tablespoon of Marine Salt, is it enough?
That was a super duper quick video. Not even the great John Moschitta Jr can match
So does the hatch brine shrimps reproduce?

I'm triggered by all the eggs sticking on the tank walls

Me watching this video: Reality is often disappointing
How big is your tank that you using in this video? I have a 1.5 gallon tank and I don't know how much salt to add to it for my Sea monkeys to live
Did you need to cut down the length of rigid air tube inside?
Apistos are more likely to breed if there a source of food for the fry
Solid!
What about using brine shrimp decapsulated eggs ? I hear they are smaller and can be more beneficial to fish than live baby brine shrimp
Where do you buy your eggs and salt?
What do green neon tetras like to eat? I've been thinking about buying some dried blood worms for them. Right now I am just feeding Hikari micro pellets. They'll eat them and then spit them out a lot of times. It seems that they are picky eaters.
Try BBS
@@ainz7853 the crazy thing is I've had these guys for almost a year now and I'm wondering what the hell they've been eating. I hope it's not my baby shrimp!
This ain’t no miss
What hatchery are you using
Make sure you turn off heater and wait 15 minutes before removing it so it doesn't break
If you want the brine shrimp to live longer and even breed, add crushed up algea to their tank.
They eat the algea and continue to grow and reproduce
