I am licensed and would love to try POTA, however I find it very intimidating - not the radio exchanges side but the 'whole process of setting up the software and spotting' - would you consider doing a 'POTA for Dummies' video sometime, with 'a step by step' "Here's What You do" to activate a Park! 73
Always LOVE your POTA videos. I hope to get on the air when my self-isolation ends. The only problem I had with this video is that the radio needs to be as loud as your voice. It was hard to hear the calling party. You are right, getting outdoors is more fun than being in a car.
Yeah audio can be a tricky thing to master. Sometimes if I turn up a weak signal too much in post it sounds even worse. Hey, at least I have a good mic now compared to my earlier videos haha. Thanks for watching. 73

Thanks for the videos. I just started POTA over the weekend and I’m hooked. Already went and activated 5 parks on the late shift as everyone calls it. I was actually thinking about getting one of those tuners for my 891. Glad to hear it works well for you. I still need to get a better antenna setup so I can go fully portable and leave my car, but for now using the Wolf River coil on my car works great. You could also make a linked dipole or a KG6HQD Speaker Wire Antenna™. They are really easy to make and very good at getting your signal out there. 73

Looks like you had a great time. I am anxious to get out myself. A good ham friend of my, Porker WV8T, is wanting to do some park activations with me. With all that is going on right now we are kind of playing it by ear. I should of been on the radio doing some hunting but I have been working on a Kenwood TS440S, getting rid of the ole dot issue. Have all bands but 2 fixed so far. That tuner seems to work great. I have a LDG Z817 tuner I am going to be using with my FT-817ND the next activation I do. 73 for now, Juddie WD8WV
Parks are prob the safest places to be right now. At least the ones around me. They are pretty empty. Although I haven't been to one since the 11th. Now Michigan is on lockdown but I'm still working so I don't know what its like.

I’ve also been thinking it might be time to part with my old Icom IC-706 and modernize with an FT-891. 73 de Chris NV9Z
A lot of people love that 706. It's a great radio. I've only seen it in person once a couple years and was still pretty new in ham radio so I didn't really know much about it then. If the temp is about 45 or higher, that's enough for me to activate.
My 706 is a straight 706 (non MK) with SN in the 11000s. It’s been around a while hihi!

Considering this as my very first hf rig. I like portable/ mobile type units. I have an ic-2730a as my primary base vhf/uhf setup in my shack. Have the same 2730’s in each vehicle. I currently use an sdrplay rsp1a as my hf rx method. Ready to pick up an hf rig and also attach to the signalink. Seems like a great emcomm type setup.
This is the best mobile/portable radio out right now in my opinion. You will not be let down should you decide to take the plunge.

You can make your own power meter much cheaper by grabbing one off Ebay and putting power poles on it. Saves about $40.

I have 3 other cheaper ones and I find them to be inaccurate. They are good enough for back ups though.

Hi Mike. Just finished the podcast with you on the Ham radio work bench . Loved it as usual. My kinda stuff! I have a question I think you could answer? I had the yaesu 857nd for a few years. Loved it! Never used the vhf/uhf side of it but great looking radio. My question is do you think the 891 is that much better than the 857? Have you ever used the 857? I looked at the reviews online and the 857 still seems like a better radio some people claim? I just wanted your thoughts on this! I have used a little bit of the 891 but menu is tricky I think? Thanks for listening and watching. That was fun recording with the HamRadioWorkbench. I wish I could help you, but I've never used the 857. I know guys who have them and love them, and I know guys that have them and wish they had the 891. I think from what I've heard that the DSP is way better than the 857, but if you don't NEED a new radio I don't see any reason to go out and buy one, (that hurt to write lol). The menus on pretty much any Yaesu suck but I don't really find myself messing with them too much. The screen is way bigger if that matters.

You know, after building the lifepo4 pack I became such a battery nerd that I love them all. For cost, the Bioennos are the winners for sure. For experience and learning, the build wins. They both perform fantastic so its a win either way you go.
I’m considering purchasing both the 891 & the 818nd. However, wouldn’t it be smarter to go with the 891? Both are around the same price, size for portability etc. Can’t I just turn down the power on the 891 for QRP ops and antennas yet have more power in case I want it in the future? In other words, why do many go with the more limited 818?
Yes you can.
You will be giving up 2m and 440 offered on the 817 and with that, the possibility of working satellite. However, because of the 817s age and reliability, you can always find decent deals on eBay for $400 or so. The 817, 817ND, and 818 are essentially the same radio.
As a [soon to be] owner of the 891 and [presently] an 817, I'd recommend the 891 because of its more modern features and filtering. The 817 is a previous generation radio designed and built in the late 90s. It was a wonder for its day and still is a thoroughly marvelous radio. But the 891 has a similar footprint and the ability to add power when you need it. Hope this helps.

Oh my God. Now the ones you work are taking over the comments! Haha, you POTA guys are crazy. I had to laugh a few wks ago.. I wanted to work a POTA activ with one of my ultra-low wire antenna experiments. Propagation was fantastic on the dead band. But the other activators were lined up so long that normal people couldn't work him! They came out of the woodwork like so many roaches. I finally gave up after he worked over a dozen activations. I could tell he mainly wanted them. I bet you do too, Mr. 'MRD! I probably called CQ on my 2' high wire and worked DX using 5w instead.. while imagining you guys being like so many RBN skimmers who also called CQ... they'd seize to function because all they'd do is talk to one another. Same thing exactly pretty much :) 73 OM

Your SWR is mot what you think it is. That SWR you reported is just between your tuner and your radio. God knows what it is from the tuner to the antenna.

After a fair bit of research I just ordered my 891D. I travel about 2-2.5 weeks a month for work and was looking for something overhead compartment-capable. Enjoyed the vid and subscribed! What is you lifespan of that 20 amp battery running 80 watts? 73
You have made a good decision on the 891. Thanks for the sub. I have never drained the battery while out but I would imagine I would get about 6 hours of non stop pileup use out of it. On RX, I would get about 20 hours.
Didn't catch how you set up the mini - Vertical around your mast or angled to the top of it? Just curious. I usually use an end fed wrapped around my 31' Jackite pole to reduce whipping in the wind. Nice setup - it's probably what I'd buy if I didn't have everything I needed already.
It just runs straight up the 43' mast. No wrapping or anything other than some velcro on the unun. It's just tall enough to keep the feed point off the ground a foot or so. I'm sure theres something you can find you need though, come on, it's ham radio haha! 73

That is the park designator (the number of what park I am at). There is a program called Parks on the Air were you go out and do exactly what I'm doing. Its a great program. Check out parksontheair.com and you can sign up and learn more about it. It's basically an excuse to get out and play radio, but it gives people a reason to work you.

Today I had to send my 891 To Yaesu for repair. I went to use it in my Truck, and NO power! I checked ALL of the Cabling, the Fuses, and the Hard Connections. ALL were solid. I would press the power button, and I hear a relay click and an almost inaudible rapid set of 4 Beeps. NO ONE I have talked to could offer me any clues regarding what has gone wrong, so its off to Cypress CA for Warranty repair-SUCKS!
3 days to get there.
5 Days to sit in wait due to the Virus.
3-4 Weeks later, they MIGHT get around to fixing it!
Then 3-4 Days for it to ship home.
5 Days after that I have to leave it due to the Virus.
If I'm LUCKY, I'll be able to use it again in Mid September!
Oh man, this is the worst thing I have read all day. That sucks, I'm really sorry to hear that. Quick solution if you don't have an extra radio though, buy another one to use while its out for repair, and then return it. Just make sure to check the return policy!!

I have considered doing exactly that-however the return policy is only 10 Days, and I expect my 891 to be gone at least 4-5 Weeks, if not 6 due to the virus business.I've been watching the local boards for a good used 891 with the idea of buying it, using it for a time, and then selling THAT to recover the money when my existing 891 comes back. That way, I have a better chance to break even on the money. The rig in my home is an Icom IC 7200, which is also a FINE radio. I considered selling it and spending the Difference for an FT-991- but I HATE Menu driven radios, LOL!

Great vid! Question: Battery is connected in-line to the analyzer, which is then connected to the workbench distribution box. Then, there is an output from the workbench which appears to eventually route to the transceiver. Is the tuner connected to power via the battery as well, or another source? If the former, I only see the one outbound powerpole set from the workbench. Clearly i'm missing something! haha. Thanks in advance!
Gosh, it's been so long but the tuner should have also been connected to the power pole distribution box. There are 4 outputs on it.

I believe you just had the radio powering the tuner with the interface cable, which I didn't know it did. Thought it needed a separate power supply initially. Glad it doesn't.

Mike, I know you like using the 891 as a portable rig. How do you feel it works as a base, especially for somebody who's just starting HF and can't spend 7300 money? I'm also renting, so every rig for me is a portable rig, and I have to keep that in mind as well.
It works great as a base. I upgraded to that from my FT-450 and used it for over a year as a base and portable rig. I've got the 7300 now so the 891 is my main portable radio.
Hi. The MFJ-939Y interface cable is compatible with FT-891, not just radios using Yaesu's FC-30 tuner (the FT-891 uses FC-50 tuner)? DXE does not list the 891 as compatible with the 939Y.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I do have 2 DX Commander antennas though and love them very much.

that packtenna mini looks like a great antenna and sounds great on 20m. with the tuner are you able to be copied clearly on 80m?

Appears the Hamlog for IOS or OS X is not available any longer....at least that's what the app store tells me. I have used Mclogger DX for years but it is quite a bit more expensive. But may have to go that route. WA0FSE
Yeah I heard that a couple days ago. I emailed the developer and he hasn't responded. I'm told its still available for android, which doesn't really help. Hopefully it'll be back.

If you still have hamlog thats great. It's not on iOS anymore. There is a new app for everything but android out now called HAMRS that is pretty sweet. Its a really stripped down log for POTA.
Do you prefer using the 891 with separate antenna tuner VS using the G90 with tuner built in? Or do you just like the extra power of the 891 or just used to using it?
You know, it just depends on the day. I'm really used to using the 891 with resonant antennas. I just recently started using end feds that require a tuner. I definitely like carrying less stuff and usually the lower power isn't a big deal so the G90 and X5105 are fantastic for that. If I could only chose one though, I would go for the high power for sure.
Mike: What would be the best "lower-wattage output" amplifier for the FT-891? Haven't heard much on this subject from anyone.
I haven't used any amps as the radio is already 100 watts. Josh has an 800 watt amp that he uses from Ameritron I think. It was about $1200 if I remember. Check out Ham Radio Crash Course and you will find a video on it.

I’ve been looking at getting an 891 recently. I’d like a setup like this for hiking trips. How would you say this tuner fairs against the FC-50? I don’t know much about it all yet. Passed my technician but haven’t received my call (as of this comment) and will be taking my a general in about a week. Any advice or help is appreciated.
I've never heard of an FC-50 until this comment and don't recall every seeing one out in the wild so I can't speak of its performance. This tuner will tune just about anything though. Congrats on your tech and good luck on your general. Unfortunately their's too much advice to give in the comments. I would say keep studying, watch as many videos on UA-cam as you can and see what interests you. Never be afraid to try things/experiment. That's half the fun of this hobby. Just mind you don't blow up your radio!
with the exception that the radio can't do 2m and 440mhz, i have heard its a nice face lift of the 857.
Yeah I'm not too big on vhf/uhf so it doesn't bother me. Its the best portable/mobile radio out in my opinion.

Do you still think that this is the best portable setup ever? I know you are rocking the 705 a lot now-a-days, but does your 705 setup beat this one out?
It's still up there. I still use the 891 as my main 100 watt portable rig. Plus, for wire antennas I'm really digging the EFHW as it doesn't need a tuner, though you don't get every band. For all bands (with a tuner) and super fast setup I'd still say this is among my top choices for portable ops.

Yes this is HF ham radio. The range is usually pretty far yes. But it does fluctuate with propagation and the frequency you are using. Fortunately we are in the upswing of the solar cycle so it's only getting better. I just talked to England yesterday from Texas with 10 watts. 10% the power I was using in this video.
I use the FT 891 for my "Power POTA" radio that can blast to 100 watts. However, right now, I am having a little love fest with my new IC 705 for SOTA and backpacking, lol.
That 705 is a really cool radio. I got to play with one at winter field day. Maybe Santa will bring me one this year if I'm a good boy.
@@hamradiotube I know people have complained about the price, but after having one, I think it was totally worth it. 10 watts out of an IC 705 is some how better than other radios. Its totally subjective, but I have made contacts with the IC 705 that I know would be impossible with a FT 817 (sorry Yaesu). I think the signal quality and SDR gives it the edge.
Can you speak about that battery with that specific radio? How long could you sustain that volume of contacts with that battery?
I estimate about 6 hours or so at this rate.

Why do you need an external tuner on a HAM setup? Doesn't the HAM tune itself.
I wish it did. Depends on what type of antenna you are using. In the case of what I'm using in this video, I do need a tuner to match impedance. Other antennas not so much.
