Magnetic Chess Board - Prototype!

- We’re not making a complete magnetic chess set today. Though that’s something a few of us always seem to be tinkering with, this article is more about an important piece of the process: Prototyping.
How much pull force do I need for a magnetic chess piece? What magnets will provide that force?

I made my own magnetic chess set some years ago. I painted the playing surface on a rubber-footed 1/16" thick sheet metal "board" and glued regular cheap magnets right to the bottom of the game pieces. It worked reasonably well. I like your recessed magnet design. When I think about making a magnetic chess set I think of the following:
Magnet strength should not lift the playing surface.
Magnet strength should maintain position in the event of accidental contact during game play. Tipping momentarily is ok.
Magnet strength should not attract, to the point of contact, adjacent pieces (perhaps use shallow pot magnets).
Magnet strength should not require too much effort to lift pieces during game play.
Game piece bottoms should not be capable of scratching the playing surface under normal conditions.
Wood veneer over sheet metal for the playing surface would be wonderful.
Thin brass, copper and or aluminum sheet metal squares could be epoxied onto steel to make the playing surface.
Wooden or non-ferrous metal game pieces are a plus.
Conversion kits is an idea as well.
I would like to purchase a prototype if you would like the feed back.
Perhaps if you post links to your video on some chess related facebook pages you can get some more ideas.
Such a great video over a cool topic. This channel definitely deserves more views. It's amazing work you got here.
Also you don't want magnets to fracture, or to exceed the strength of adhesive. Consider how the pieces interact in storage. Also the possibility of making the board magnetic and the pieces magnet-receptive which would make for easier replacements. A key issue is safety around children, another argument for embedding the magnets in a board.
👍🏼 Mo' bigga, mo' betta!
(Have the same shirt from Cape May! ⚓ USCG TRACEN! 😎)
I made a magnetic game for the fridge for and ongoing game of UR. With an old cell phone magnet so you could take a photo of the board to discourage cheating, ROFL!
Two smaller magnets antiparallel, or four in a checkerboard-pattern, with a decent back-iron! (a one-eurocent coin does nicely ;)
cool shit mah dudes
I am sure it could be improved. Check out the plans on the Woodbex website.
