This is one the best combat systems I’ve ever seen. I was really confused at first but it gets so much clearer the more you play, I got to 4 elemental orbs and destroying all of them at once and wiping out most of the bosses health was SO satisfying.
A generally fantastic tip is to have Rex with Sword, Axe and Dual Scythes since once anyone gets a break he can complete the driver combo by himself, it's a really good way to get extra items like legendary core crystals from high level enemies
The best way to guarantee this is to have 2 blades with the reaction you want on another party member, they will always switch to the blade that can do the next step on any given driver combo if it's cooldown is ready.

A key thing you never metntioned, but I learned the hard way, you can start a level 1 blade combo even idf u start with lvl 2, 3 or 4. If it is the first it will do th ebigger dmg of it's stage, but then it can be followed with a level 2, etc. There I was trying not to level up my specials too fast but now I know i don't mneed to hole back

(I played 3 first and then 2) I'm reaching 100 hours in the game and still didn't really get how chain attacks work. Yeah I did it on accident lol, and you need like five orbs to charge it. If anyone's wondering, if you fill the yellow meter in the top left the last person to take out the last orb ends the dmg sequence with their lvl 4 combo.

Finally finished. Just knocking off sidequests.. Gorgs follow your passion is a killer.. All these ingredients. Amazing game though. Took my time and finished main quest in roughly 140 hours... Took my time and did a fair few sidequests along the way. This game is a masterpiece.

Dude thank you I've been playing for 107 hours and I'm barely level 42 I started using this technique I need about six and a half hours I got all the way to level 70 and picked up several rare items along the way thanks a lot you're awesome
This is exactly the information I needed. Specifically I had been messing up by trying to smash the orbs with the indicated element, not the opposing element. I guess I missed that lesson, if there was one, during the in-game tutorials. Thanks for the tips!
The only thing I'm still not sure about is the activation of the skills associated with the blade combo tree in the top right corner. Specifically if I've start a chain sometimes the prompts to continue and complete the chain will often not appear in time and the chain will reset, therefore not generating an orb. (For example I've seen the 1,000,000 Volt spell show up on Nia a few times but the trigger to activate it never shows up. I'm still doing something wrong.)
I have done 5 orbs 2x before. Both times I was at the land of morytha. decaying Titan parasite apocalypse boss. No I didn't use break, topple, launch and Smash. If you break all five orbs, you get full Elemental burst. we're all your characters will attack at once, it does well over millions of damage. It fills the orange gauge at the top of the screen all the way and I'm guessing once that gets filled up is when you do the full- Elemental attack. Orbs: Fire, Water, Light, Dark and Rock. For some reason I couldn't get Wind, Ice and Electric. Rex: Azami, Pyra/Mythra and Kora. Nia: Dromarch, Wilfric and Adenine. Morag: Brighid, Praxis and Dahlia.
I got to chapter 5 and was getting destroyed by the power lines boss and I'm pretty sure not using orbs the entire time is what was causing it. Awesome video very well explained tutorial on this combat system
The only thing I didn't really learn from the game, is the weakness chart. So thanks for that! Now I understand why some of my chains just didn't work at times.
I was able to figure out the type chart by looking at the idea chart. Bravery is fire and water, so they cancel each other, truth is wind and ice, compassion is earth and lighting and justice is light and dark.

Tyler Edlin they're always there, but they cycle quite a ways around an enemy model, so if they're your size you should see them, but bigger ones are difficult. And they only appear after you finish a combo.
Yeah, if you see a close up cutscene in slow motion where your blade does a special attack with a name then you completed the combo and an orb should appear afterward.
Chain attacks go up to eight orbs and with *Chapter 7 spoiler* you can hit every orb for one damage and get a full burst with only 4 orbs Also since I mentioned it full burst happens when you pop 5 orbs and is a level four special with the last blade chosen Side note: the more orbs you have the bigger your modifier is it goes up to a 5k bonus.
I love watching your Xenoblade Chronicles 2 guide videos because they're so damn helpful!! I'm loving it! The only question I have which I still can't grasp is the combo list at the right hand side. Which pattern should I follow? Is it the seal destruct elements I must follow or the 3 elements beside them I must follow to continue the combo? Can you please go more in-depth with blade combos and how to do them? You seemed to kinda skip over and go to the "orbs" I have questions like....so let's so I build my "a button" special to lvl 1 then I use that then the menu on the upper right comes up...what next? How do I need to know what to use next? What lvl or teir of my moves to I need next..how do I know what i need to do to active each One? So at 2:43 you have teir 1 light element and the upper right window came up..what exactly needs to be done for that combo? And explain what the "a button " special teirs you need to be at to activate it. PLEASE! Thanks
Ok I think I will go ahead and make another video on it, a lot of you guys are asking. But basically in the bottom right you will see your arts and every time you get the blue circle the spot with the numeral (I,II,III, or IV) will increase its meter (red line around the square/diamond). When its high enough you will get a prompt for a special (ZL, ZR, A) on both sides and bottom of the screen. Getting the blue circle is all about timing, and this is what builds up your specials faster. Ill go into depth with it in another video soon, stay tuned.

That would be very much appreciated..like say at 2:39 to activate that combo what needs to happen...who needs to do what? What lvl needs does my art need to be at to start it...and if someone else starts a combo what I need to do to complete It? Do I need a lvl 2 or 3 art to finish their combo? And if there are multiple combos to choose from on the upper right? How do I activate each One?? What if one combo only has two elements? What lvls do I need then? Xenoblade 2 In the beginning: aw man this game is super hand holdy seriously I know what to do Chapter 3: ok where do I go this arrow is confusing (just go up from where you are) Xenoblade you guys said you know what you are doing.
Some fucking way, I managed to beat the game with only the most basic idea of what the hell I was doing and didn't figure a lot of this stuff out until I was grinding Chickenhart Dragma for Legendary Cores after I'd beaten the game. WOW could I have saved myself a lot of trouble.
Wait, I figured Water beats Fire by common sense, but it also works the other way around?!! How does that even work?! Much less, how were we supposed to know that?!! This game continues to not give enough info.....Thank you so much for this.
I get it a little better so I still liked the vid because it was a lot better than the game's explanation but I still REALLY don't understand the whole orb, full burst , extend chain attack thing, I don't even understand how to get the orbs, and my partners are dumb and probably wont do what I want them to do anyways, at least I learned from this vid the element effectiveness but that doesnt matter since I still don't get anything
So I actually made another video that hopefully will explain the blade combos better (check the pinned comment). Once you do the blade combos you get the orbs. And thats when you start breaking them during your chain attack. Hope that helps at least a tiny bit more.
You probably won't read this, but I keep doing blade combos like that and get no orbs. I'm confused and none of the videos I'm seeing are telling me why it's doing this.
I'm having trouble with the Aeshma's Core second battle (after Jin) and I'm at LV 47 with Rex and Zeke at LV 54, but I still can't beat a LV 38 boss! I hope I can with your tips. The explanation in the game is really vague.
I'm still struggling with all this. The game did a terrible job explaining the extremely complex minutiae of battle mechanics. Sadly, I dont even know the difference between a blade combo and a chain attack. The only thing I basically stick to because of this is using a driver art right after an auto attack so as to charge up the blades attack that is delegated to the A button. Is that a blade combo? Or is it only a blade combo when you charge it up to level 3 or 4? I love this game and its deep story and lore, as I did with XC1. But I know I'd enjoy it more if i were to understand these finer points of battle mechanics. Cany you or anyone describe these to me please?

I've played this game for so long now, all characters are around level 50, but I have never done a chain-attack. I don't understand how you even start to do it...

Either yourself or your teammates. You will see prompts either on the sides or at the bottom of the screen for yourself. If you need a little bit more help, check my pinned comment. I go into more detail about this there.
How can you get into a chain attack?. I’ve been doing alot of blade combos but it never goes into the chain attacks. I am on Chapter 2. Do you have to get further into the story line? Thanks

What I'm confused mostly about is the top right combo thing. I'm not sure if I'm progressing through it correctly. Because I just press whatever ability pops up on my allies.... What I'm not sure about is... am I'm using the elements going right or up and down because I'll randomly get like an ultimate cutscene from just pressing buttons. Idk if I'm explaining that correctly please help haha
So whenever you do a special, you will initiate the blade combo. That is when you sill see the stuff (special tree) at the top right. So lets say you start with a tier 1 fire special, that will get it going and you will notice a fire meter at the top that is slowly going down. You want to launch a 2nd tier special and the tree at the top right will show the paths you can take. The first icon on that list is where you are in the blade combo you will then have 2 different options of where you can go next. You will see the special prompts with ZL, ZR, or yourself (A). You want to launch the 2nd tier special/blade combo before the fire meter runs out. Then a new meter will start depending on the element you went with. And you should see the special tree at the top right update as well. You should have 2 more options for an elemental special. This third special is the final special for the full blade combo, and once you launch it you will see the cutscene and an orb of the final element you used in the blade combo will start flying around the enemy. I hope that explains it, its a little hard to fully explain like this lol.
Orbs? I don't recall any orbs in the past 60 hours I've been playing so far.. I just need to perform 7 blade combos to finish Dromarch mastery thing so I can unlock the 4th row so I can unlock Ancient Wisdom so I can finally have this fcn aegis sword.. I have no idea what to do to get blade combos. I've done them a lot before. They just kinda happen. And idk how I do them. I've been researching and trying for hours now but I can't figure it out
They symbol next to the name is its weakness for when you use your Arts. So if it says fire next to the name, then its weakness is fire. The elemental orbs during a chain attack are what I am referencing with the type chart in my video.
AndresRestart I came to that conclusion despite the confusion not too long ago. It’s confusing to say it’s weakness is water when the symbol shows it’s fire. After watching this and reading some posts, my gut instinct is just screaming to pay attention to what I see, not what I hear. Thank you for confirming my suspicions.
Just for clarification, the guy gets an orb based on the element of the final skill for a blade combo right? Does that mean we have to use multiple blade combos with different elemental finishes to give them a lot of orbs to smash?
I'm here because I was just wondering what it was like for that game, and I'm honestly disappointed. 0:59 I watched all the cutscenes, and from what they say at times, it shouldn't be this way. The water type blade is weak to ice, and the thunder type blade can't do anything to stop a Boulder. Then I look here and see ice and water have nothing to do with each other, and electricity and earth beat each other. You could easily do two trios and the light v.s dark... fire beats ice, ice beats water, water beats fire. Earth beats electricity, electricity beats wind, wind beats earth. (Though I guess that one doesn't make as much sense) Light and dark counter each other. That... that honestly makes SO much more sense than... this. Oh well, it's not that big of a problem, I guess...
Can someone please explain me how you're supposed to know WHICH orb you're aiming at ? Cause it fucking suck when you don't know which orb you are aiming and thus finish the chain attack with 3 cracked orb but not a singled one broken, that's fucking lame and I still can't fucking understand which orb I am aiming during a chain attack with more than one orb
I have had trouble with that too. The way to guarantee you will even hit them is by using the opposite element. So for example to make sure I break an orb fast I usually make sure I have 2 fire blades and 2 water blades, 1 of each for the first 2 drivers in my party. Ill start a chain attack, with a water attack on the fire orb, and then immediately another with my next party member. Next round I'll use my fire blades on the water orb. Meanwhile my third party member is getting super effective damage done on other orbs.

Sebastian Lisowik From what I have been told, when you see the element next to the name that means that is its weakness. Like if you see ice creatures there will be a fire symbol next to their name sometimes.

I'd add that you can extend the timer for nailing all the special attacks to get orbs by using the break, topple, launch, smash series.

Best way to full burst is to break 4 orbs in two rounds of the chain attack! Can be tricky but soooo much damage

I figured as much, I still haven't fought anything that will last long enough for me to do it lol
But honestly to get max damage you need about 6-7 orbs from what I’ve heard

I love watching your Xenoblade Chronicles 2 guide videos because they're so damn helpful!! I'm loving it! The only question I have which I still can't grasp is the combo list at the right hand side. Which pattern should I follow? Is it the seal destruct elements I must follow or the 3 elements beside them I must follow to continue the combo? I'm just asking because I'm getting this game for Christmas and I don't want to be clueless about that part.

Can you please go more in-depth with blade combos and how to do them? You seemed to kinda skip over and go to the "orbs" I have questions like....so let's so I build my "a button" special to lvl 1 then I use that then the menu on the upper right comes up...what next? How do I need to know what to use next? What lvl or teir of my moves to I need next..how do I know what i need to do to active each One? So at 2:43 you have teir 1 light element and the upper right window came up..what exactly needs to be done for that combo? And explain what the "a button " special teirs you need to be at to activate it. PLEASE! Thanks
Ok I think I will go ahead and make another video on it, a lot of you guys are asking. But basically in the bottom right you will see your arts and every time you get the blue circle the spot with the numeral (I,II,III, or IV) will increase its meter (red line around the square/diamond). When its high enough you will get a prompt for a special (ZL, ZR, A) on both sides and bottom of the screen. Getting the blue circle is all about timing, and this is what builds up your specials faster. Ill go into depth with it in another video soon, stay tuned.
AndresRestart thank you very much..if you can just go in-depth about the menu on the upper right? That would be very much appreciated..like say at 2:39 to activate that combo what needs to happen...who needs to do what? What lvl needs does my art need to be at to start it...and if someone else starts a combo what I need to do to complete It? Do I need a lvl 2 or 3 art to finish their combo? And if there are multiple combos to choose from on the upper right? How do I activate each One?? What if one combo only has two elements? What lvls do I need then? IM SORRY for asking so many questions but as a begginger I feel like these are frequent asked question that would help so so much to be clarified. THANK YOU
Well all the moves are related to one combo. Everyone works together to do one combo. Im gonna try show it in better detail soon. Expect a video about it tomorrow hopefully :)

The minimum amount of recommended orbs is 5 for the best ratio

Some fucking way, I managed to beat the game with only the most basic idea of what the hell I was doing and didn't figure a lot of this stuff out until I was grinding Chickenhart Dragma for Legendary Cores after I'd beaten the game. WOW could I have saved myself a lot of trouble.

I get it a little better so I still liked the vid because it was a lot better than the game's explanation but I still REALLY don't understand the whole orb, full burst , extend chain attack thing, I don't even understand how to get the orbs, and my partners are dumb and probably wont do what I want them to do anyways,
at least I learned from this vid the element effectiveness but that doesnt matter since I still don't get anything
So I actually made another video that hopefully will explain the blade combos better (check the pinned comment). Once you do the blade combos you get the orbs. And thats when you start breaking them during your chain attack. Hope that helps at least a tiny bit more.

You probably won't read this, but I keep doing blade combos like that and get no orbs. I'm confused and none of the videos I'm seeing are telling me why it's doing this.

I'm having trouble with the Aeshma's Core second battle (after Jin) and I'm at LV 47 with Rex and Zeke at LV 54, but I still can't beat a LV 38 boss! I hope I can with your tips. The explanation in the game is really vague.

I'm still struggling with all this. The game did a terrible job explaining the extremely complex minutiae of battle mechanics. Sadly, I dont even know the difference between a blade combo and a chain attack. The only thing I basically stick to because of this is using a driver art right after an auto attack so as to charge up the blades attack that is delegated to the A button. Is that a blade combo? Or is it only a blade combo when you charge it up to level 3 or 4?
I love this game and its deep story and lore, as I did with XC1. But I know I'd enjoy it more if i were to understand these finer points of battle mechanics.

I'm very early on in the game and didn't get to the point where orbs are explained yet but basically, the more orbs around the enemy, the more attacks you can use right?
During a chain attack you can get in more attacks for every orb you break, yeah.
I've played this game for so long now, all characters are around level 50, but I have never done a chain-attack. I don't understand how you even start to do it...

I am 24 hours intot he game and i have no god idea of exactly how to do them yet. Most of the time i do lvcl1 and can never get a level 2 to come on the screen. Ima watch your video now and some others try to figure it out

Is there a way to move a companion from a pool of acid, for example? I've died a couple of times cuz my tank just stood in the acid - _-

Fairly new to the game here. What button do you press to start the chain attack? The party gauge is full and the orb is spinning but i can't get the chain attack started. Thanks.

So when you say you need to follow up a fire attack with a water attack etc, how do you actually do that??? Am I depending on other party members who have opposing blade elements to do so. This crap is so confusing
Either yourself or your teammates. You will see prompts either on the sides or at the bottom of the screen for yourself. If you need a little bit more help, check my pinned comment. I go into more detail about this there.
How can you get into a chain attack?. I’ve been doing alot of blade combos but it never goes into the chain attacks. I am on Chapter 2. Do you have to get further into the story line? Thanks
Rashid2140 You need to get to chapter 3 before you gain access to chain attacks. So don’t worry, just keep going.
So on the enemy health bar if it has a fire symbol I should be using a water element blade against it?

What I'm confused mostly about is the top right combo thing. I'm not sure if I'm progressing through it correctly. Because I just press whatever ability pops up on my allies.... What I'm not sure about is... am I'm using the elements going right or up and down because I'll randomly get like an ultimate cutscene from just pressing buttons. Idk if I'm explaining that correctly please help haha
So whenever you do a special, you will initiate the blade combo. That is when you sill see the stuff (special tree) at the top right. So lets say you start with a tier 1 fire special, that will get it going and you will notice a fire meter at the top that is slowly going down. You want to launch a 2nd tier special and the tree at the top right will show the paths you can take. The first icon on that list is where you are in the blade combo you will then have 2 different options of where you can go next. You will see the special prompts with ZL, ZR, or yourself (A). You want to launch the 2nd tier special/blade combo before the fire meter runs out. Then a new meter will start depending on the element you went with. And you should see the special tree at the top right update as well. You should have 2 more options for an elemental special. This third special is the final special for the full blade combo, and once you launch it you will see the cutscene and an orb of the final element you used in the blade combo will start flying around the enemy. I hope that explains it, its a little hard to fully explain like this lol.
Orbs? I don't recall any orbs in the past 60 hours I've been playing so far..
I just need to perform 7 blade combos to finish Dromarch mastery thing so I can unlock the 4th row so I can unlock Ancient Wisdom so I can finally have this fcn aegis sword..

What is annoying is the game shows a fire symbol on an enemy but the game says its weak to water. Is it fire or water?
They symbol next to the name is its weakness for when you use your Arts. So if it says fire next to the name, then its weakness is fire. The elemental orbs during a chain attack are what I am referencing with the type chart in my video.
AndresRestart I came to that conclusion despite the confusion not too long ago. It’s confusing to say it’s weakness is water when the symbol shows it’s fire. After watching this and reading some posts, my gut instinct is just screaming to pay attention to what I see, not what I hear. Thank you for confirming my suspicions.
Just for clarification, the guy gets an orb based on the element of the final skill for a blade combo right? Does that mean we have to use multiple blade combos with different elemental finishes to give them a lot of orbs to smash?

I'm here because I was just wondering what it was like for that game, and I'm honestly disappointed.
0:59 I watched all the cutscenes, and from what they say at times, it shouldn't be this way. The water type blade is weak to ice, and the thunder type blade can't do anything to stop a Boulder.
Then I look here and see ice and water have nothing to do with each other, and electricity and earth beat each other. You could easily do two trios and the light v.s dark... fire beats ice, ice beats water, water beats fire. Earth beats electricity, electricity beats wind, wind beats earth. (Though I guess that one doesn't make as much sense) Light and dark counter each other. That... that honestly makes SO much more sense than... this. Oh well, it's not that big of a problem, I guess...

Can someone please explain me how you're supposed to know WHICH orb you're aiming at ? Cause it fucking suck when you don't know which orb you are aiming and thus finish the chain attack with 3 cracked orb but not a singled one broken, that's fucking lame and I still can't fucking understand which orb I am aiming during a chain attack with more than one orb
I have had trouble with that too. The way to guarantee you will even hit them is by using the opposite element. So for example to make sure I break an orb fast I usually make sure I have 2 fire blades and 2 water blades, 1 of each for the first 2 drivers in my party. Ill start a chain attack, with a water attack on the fire orb, and then immediately another with my next party member. Next round I'll use my fire blades on the water orb. Meanwhile my third party member is getting super effective damage done on other orbs.
that's seems like a safe way to do it, sometimes I just don't have the opposite element so I can get unlucky because I don't hit the same orb
I still cant find anything about the element symbol next to the enemies name. Does it mean that its the elemental weakness or do i have to use the opposite element?
Sebastian Lisowik From what I have been told, when you see the element next to the name that means that is its weakness. Like if you see ice creatures there will be a fire symbol next to their name sometimes.
