    Trapping a passage peregrine, i will be going after my first one this coming fall. So i am changing everything over from my red tail set up, to a falcon set up. And just absorbing as much info as i can, till then. From start to finish would be great . Like where to start looking to in the hand. To the bait.

    It's not dho, but its (do). We call in urdu or hindi (Do) to two and (gazza) mean sticks or arrows, so do gazza mean in English (two sticks).

    If I may Ask, Why don't you fly adult birds?

    • @benwoodrufffalconry
      @benwoodrufffalconry  3 роки тому +1

      Perhaps I should have phrased it in more detail. We fly adult birds, but we don’t acquire them from the wild as adults. Adult birds (called haggards) mate for life. So trapping an adult would be taking away someone’s mate. So ethically we don’t take adults. And in the USA our laws are based off of that same principle and so it is also illegal here. We only trap first year birds (called passage birds) but we will happily fly them into adulthood.

    As a General falconer, you can move to the owl realm with GHO... any advice on trapping them(which I hear can be a bad experience trying to train an adult wild caught). Or any other advice or discussion on GHO or snowy owls. I’d love to meet you someday 👍 Your videos are great to reference and get tips from. I only use the BC to trap kestrels, but that was interesting to see (especially the elusive female swooping under!!!)

    Awesome video- couple questions- why don’t you keep adults? How do you sex the bird? And how did you capture the little bird? Is a bird better than a mouse for a kestrel?

  • @amitkumarchinoobhaipatel6892
    @amitkumarchinoobhaipatel6892 3 роки тому +1

    Dho = 2 and gaaz=yards.
    Its an Indian trap, it is 1000 times better than Bal= horse hair and chatri= umbrella.
    Falconers have seen that the bird dances around and lot of times does not get caught.
    Your dho gaaza was totally set up wrong. Once the bird leave and heads for the dho gazza she is 100% caught.
    The top point of the net was too high, it should be low causing the bottom part of the net having lavish extra net which you burry in snow or sand or dirt. The top point should be closer than the bottom points of the sticks, when the bird hits, the sticks close behind the bird, the sticks make a letter X, enclosing into a bag. The top points of the net is fixedl rigid to the poles, the two strings near the sticks should be tight snug not loose. Pass a rubber washer ring on each string where the bottom of the net is connected, the net slides up from the bottom, the bird hits near the bottom 2-3 ft.
    The ground points of the sticks should be planted lightly, depending so that the wind does not drop the poles prematurely.
    For every bird the net holes are different, the bird has to go till its shoulder, the bird will twist and difficult for you to take it out, many times I have cut net to free the bird quickly as anti hunting people flock up. We make our own nets so no big deal.

    Really enjoying your informative videos.
    I have a few hungry young Hawks plaguing my birds. In the process of putting nets above my lofts( because I realize he won't leave) I notice I have a barred owl living behind my loft lol
    I've built a compartment trap and looked at Canadian paperwork. I feel the owl is my team member and the Hawks, they need to be taught to hunt apparently.
    Strange journey ..... racing pigeons to falconry. I think if I trap that hawk, I s it better for them if I just release it elsewhere,
    Or should I cure it and then let it go ?
    If it's from here, my house and I put it somewhere else, that probably reduces chance of survival.
    ???

    What’s the best room temperature to keep a merlin or a kestrel??

    • @benwoodrufffalconry
      @benwoodrufffalconry  3 роки тому

      In general, if you are at a comfortable temperature, a Merlin or a kestrel will also be comfortable. In the wild they brave the extreme cold just fine, but they also burn through calories much faster when they are cold. But any indoor temperature is not going to be cold enough to elicit a fat caloric burn response.
      The real value of keeping a Merlin or a kestrel indoors is that the temperatures are consistent enough to really dial in extremely accurate weight management.

    Hi Ben my name is Tyler just asking im an falconer and its my first year in falconry and i have an american kestrel and my dream bird is definitely a sharp-shinned hawk and i was wondering whats your preference of when do you think i could get a sharpie. Like do you think i have to wait a few years or do you think i could get a sharpie next year and you said in an accipiter video and you said to talk to a person who has or had a sharpshinned and i live in highland utah and i pretty sure i’m close to you so maybe if your fine with it can you give me some preference about sharpies because i don’t know anybody near me who has had a sharpie or give me a name of a person who has had sharpie any were near me?

    • @benwoodrufffalconry
      @benwoodrufffalconry  3 роки тому

      I definitely prefer an imprint sharpie or family raised sharpie over a passage. So if you go either of those routes you’ll have to do one more year and upgrade to pull a young bird. But if you have good success with your kestrel and your sponsor feels you have really mastered weight management on a small bird, then there is nothing wrong with flying a sharpie after having worked with kestrels. Their weight management needs to be a little more precise than a kestrel, and you have to hunt them all the time to keep them from becoming aggressive. But they train well and finding game is no problem. Sharpies are a great choice and are a ton of fun.

    why don't western falconers trap peregrines or sakers? In the middle east that is what we aim for while trapping

    • @benwoodrufffalconry
      @benwoodrufffalconry  3 роки тому +3

      For years we weren’t allowed to trap peregrines at all. We finally got legal permission to acquire wild peregrines just a few years ago. But it is very limited and we have to enter a drawing and have our name drawn out. Even then they give us very limited season to get a wild peregrine. Other species are practically year round. For example in my state our peregrine season barely extends into September before full migration is underway. With this being the case, most falconers who draw out to get a wild peregrine choose to pull a summer baby which is a sure thing, rather than risk trapping a September bird and possibly not finding one because migration isn’t under full swing yet. If we were allowed to trap peregrines even into October, then more falconers would choose to trap a peregrine rather than pull a baby. Hopefully someday we will have that option.
