Here's the plight of the owner of this house in his own words: 📌📌 Firstlly i was never on site all the time until the Final last Mabati was to be put according to Luhya Tradition..they call it "eshilsule" They say the owner must be there to signify nyumba ni yake. Then we must sleep there with the woman of the house for atnleast 4 days..etc. My dad laid the first foundation Stone july 12th 2020 when the First travel restrictions were lifted and he was able to travel. This is my first "Simba". FROM Foundation to walling .We had several repeat jobs on the walling above the lintel on the rear side due to structural deficiency..we had to redo the kitchen three times during tilling due to improper unprofessional fittings and the wall in the center dividing kitchen and living room had tobe redone because it was not straight ..etc I had to change contractors three times because of shoddy bad workmanship. The last contractor who did partial keying and Terrazzo plus outside finishing did not finish after he misappropriated funds for cirtain materials.I asked him to leave site until i decide what to do.Therefore the home is furnished and habitable but not as i really wanted. You will appreciate and see the costs as i share later.Thats the gist of a story of doing a building when you are away abroad. The challenges and losses are big.
Overall, the calibre of the craftsmanship is so wanting. It lacks color coordination and yes, some elements are just so subpar! I hope we learn our lessons. Now it will take lots of money and double work to restore the house to its actual glory
it was my impression that getting quality tiles in Kakamega was a major problem. Those big size ones in living room came from Kisumu.Iam planning to ship tiles from abroad plus other household accessories to address this. The logistices of redoing are huge.Room by room gypsium and painting.Means i have relocate precious furnitures plus other items stored within.
The house is beautiful, its a shame that the finishing hapo kwa ceiling gypsum wasn't professional, nevertheless nothing that you can't live with. No need of pouring more money until you can actually come and finish it yourself. If he/she can be so kind to share the name of the contractor wa cctv and plumbing , it would help us out a lot, better promote people who do their work right. For the village, I have always been of the opinion that less is more. For the ceiling I think I will go with plain boards may just high quality crown Moulding and high quality lights. Reason is that makes it easier to clean and control bugs and other insects especially if the house will be infrequently used, same goes for the pillars, makes maintenance easy. For the floor tiles, avoid using white grouting, kuna matope and vumbi mob kwa village and it will save you money. For the interior walls I think white or an off white like swiss coffee white would help keep the house bright enough. Professional interior designers are not cheap but if you keep the design simple for village practicality , it could be affordable. Congrats for managing the project remotely, I am doing it as well and it ain't easy. Thank you for sharing the lessons with us.
My mistake was to insist on the contractors to ensure they engage local vijanas so that they benefit with some income...They ended up being a nuisance and some of the repeat jobs were caused by these people who were not well supervised.
i am also building at home managing form the diaspora and the trick is to get a good contractor and every step or change in the structure is done with my consent or else I wont incur the cost for it
Remember you just start by getting the correct house plans ..then start by buying materials pole pole starting with foundations kwanza etc basically three or 4 phases. First foundations, then walling up to lintel or ring beam then roofing and lastly finishing's eg electricals doors plumbing's plastering painting once you've put windows and doors to secure the internal fittings etc. BUT get fundis you can trust and the overseer asiwe mtu wa ukora
@TheWanjalaz I come from the same area, I wish I knew him, I could have advised him. Wanjala we have a small house build in Shirere Kakamega with a single lady who is in usa, just on phone
It's very unfair and unprofessional for fundis to throw away someone's hard-earned money like that. I hope he gets the right people this time so that he can also be proud and satisfied.
The Wazess will never burry watu ati behind the homes..unless you the dead person was bad person in the society or did some taboo things then they will burry you at night somewhere at the back of the homestead as sign of ultimate shame. However Burrying front of the home is respect and love for the departed.Oparanya tried to bring a langata style Mazishi place and was told hio asahau and they will vote him out. That was in 2014.
@@liyayipatrick6501 we will need to change. How will the compounds look like in 2 generations? Like a cemetery. Bodies don't guard homes, which is where the belief stems from.
I share the same view Cathy! If you cannot find trusted contractors then breaking to supervise is essential. Working remotely on such a project is a daunting task
ITS not practicle to leave work for 3 months from Diaspora..unless you are in Businness and willing to sacrifice .Also remember it was during Covid19. No travel for at least one year and when Travelling was eased the damage was already done.
Not every average Kenyan can afford doing such a commitment. .We could do a huge grand 5 or 6 bedroom structure if i really wanted .I did not have to do this build. I have a home abroad. but i needed to protect my ancestral land for future of my next generation to come to when need arises. My family and connected relatives are all my neighbours all around my section of land. my grandfather owned the huge original almost 15 acre land .and part of it now taken by government to put up a health centre and it did not make sense to leave it empty and that's why i originally did a semi permanent structure yrs ago for one of my parents who unfortunately passed on. ..there is context to every action i did, However i respect your opinion.
@SPIDERman9051 you absolutely didn't have to explain all this. People on internet are toxic. I can bet that they probably have no investment to show. Big up to you! PEACE as you seek perfection.

Much clapping for others while waiting my turn❤❤❤❤
Your time will definitely come !
The intro is breathtaking. It got me glued to the video, with the aerial view! Good job.
Thanks
Keep up the good work Mr. Wanjala
Appreciate the feedback Sir!
It’s a beautiful home with good environment.
Thanks for the feedback.... actually the owner is in Europe. He tried.... managing such a project remotely is not an easy one.
Great job 👏
Thanks Dominic! We see and appreciate you, Sir.
I can see there is drone shots, that a positive move
Yes yes! We are upgrading our storytelling to ensure you get to watch the best videos
That tiling is an eyesore. choose one plain colour for the whole house. The gypsum is truly bad.but generally, the house is beautiful.

@TheWanjalaz I also have so many mistakes in my own house, though not completed, but I'll overlook them for now until I get more money.

Wow! Scary especially for me who is doing exactly what the guy did.

Looks good form far but far feom good...all those colors are not eycatching..have one color white...attracts and shoows elegance...
The challenge of quack fundis.
I am very sorry to see a such house, why didn't he get nice and expert fundis.
Very sad situation. The execution was a disaster.

It's why we decided to spotlight this issue. Fundis can be crazy. Some are just quacks masquerading as fundis.
Gypsum ya tv ni mbaya tile hazi much, weka tiles za white
Thanks for your observations work in progress.. tutatengeneza.
This is the disappointment of the client. Those contractors just messed him up.
This western Kenya tradition of burying people at the gate needs to stop. Kind of ruins the compound.
The African heritage.

No wonder it took 17 months… woi
I think it’s better to have the funds ready, take 3 months off and supervise your own home construction.
