what i like about john's videos is that he just sits on the arm of his couch in his lounge (like many of us do), no fancy desks or gear everywhere, no fancy post processing, and just plays. great work john.
The amp looks like it was found in a dusty back corner of a Bowling Center in 1958. (that is Not an insult). John - your playing has grown SO much over the last few years
That 355 especially sounded great thru the Starlite. 5 watts thru an 8" speaker and a 6V6 like the classic tweed Champs. I see they're available for a relatively decent price. Very nice.
Really nice, I have a handful of 5 Watt amp , great to mic ,they get a wide range of Tone an don't kill you with volume. Get to hear this amp today , super demo! Thank you , cheers!
That's actually really cool. Love the clean tones. Yes, it does sound like 2 amps. Love the breakup on it too. Really nice. 5wts is very nice. Maybe when I'm a bit "richer" lol.
John, I have watched and listened to a million amp reviews and this one is my favorite for a few reasons. First of all, your playing is so nice to listen to. Second, that Tele style guitar suits you perfectly. Lastly, that little amp is really impressive! Thank you 🙏
Surprised Magnatone didn't stick with a tube rectifier. I decided to spend a little more and buy a Tungsten 5 watt amp with a 10 inch speaker and tube rectifier. I have a few very old Magnatone amps and several Swart 5 watters with 8 inch and 12 inch speakers.
I love Magnatone's stuff. That 5 watt amp sounds amazing. I got a five watt tube amp Special 6 that I modified, I hit a 12 inch Peavey Viper speaker with it, , it's loud. Still, this one is way nicer, more headroom. But I still want the big Magnatone stereo model. That thing is killer. Have to sell my car- lol!
Hey John,Another great review. I bought the new Keeley compressor after that review. Would love to own a Magnatone. Its got the look of a timeless classic for sure.
Just a volume and tone switch! Whaaa! Are you sure there isn't an EQ somewhere? Can't be. It did sound good though. No gain unless you turn it up. Definite old school approach.
Hey-oh John... have your chops been jumpin' up to the next level and beyond (?) ...or izzit just me, in my seventies, believing that we can get better-no limit no matter wot the situation and/or the circumstance (?) Well, I for one, am lovin' it... Cheerios (but not in a bowl with white juice)
In the last 3 months I have purchased two (2) Monoprice Stage Right 5 watt 6V6, 12ax7 pre-amp tube, with an 8" speaker and also with a 8/16 ohm speaker output jack. These amps have a volume control knob and a Tone control knob and cost me $119 each brand new! That's 2 tube amps for a total $238 +tax. In 2017 I purchased a new Fender EC Vibro-Champ 5 watts, 6V6GT power tube, and two 12AX7 tubes and a 5Y3GT rectifier tube and tube driven tremolo and a weber 8" speaker for $999.99 it's a great amp. I can even disconnect the internal speaker and insert a speaker cable and connect the amp to any 4/8/16 ohm load speaker cab's that I own. I want to say that those Stage Right $119 tube amps sound good with the stock 8" speaker but not exactly as good as the much more expensive Fender Vibro-Champ with it's special designed Weber 8" speaker. However the Stage Right amps do sound just as good when connected to my Marshall Full Stack of (2) 412 16ohm cabs for a total impedance of 8 ohms. I will never shell out the $1,299 for a new Magnatone that essentially is very similar to the Stage Right 5 watt amps. The reason is "MONEY". Of course you all can purchase whatever you want and can afford. I'm retired so I'm careful with my money now. I have six 5 watt tube amps and 5 watts for me is the sweet spot. Besides the 2 Stage Right 5 watt tube amps and the 5 watt Fender Vibro-Champ I also have two Kustom Defender 5H - 5 watt heads using single EL84 power tubes that can power 4/8/16 ohm speaker loads - I'm not in love with the bedroom tone but in the studio they are fine. I also have a nice Randall RD5H 5 watt tube amp with a 6V6 power tube and a 12AX7 preamp tube that provides a Marshall JCM900 sound. It has volume and tone knobs and a Gain control knob and can run 8 & 16 ohm speaker loads. I use my 5 watt tube amps in my music studio and in my bedroom so that's why I have essentially two of each. I got tired of every morning and evening relocating my favorite sounding, most used and excellent playing tube amps so I got smart and doubled up on some of them. Understand I'm not bashing the Magnatone 5 watt tube amp as I'm very sure it's a fantastic guitar amplifier. I am here to point out that you can spend a lot less and pretty much obtain the same tones. It helps if you have extra speaker cabs available. I used to knock China and it's inexpensive products as I am convinced they are out to put all other manufacturers out of business, once accomplished they shall raise the prices so we shall all be totally screwed. Why am I now endorsing inexpensive amps? MONEY! Being retired and on a fixed income really limits my purchasing power. Yes I have 3 accounts that allow me to purchase instruments and amps on 24/36/48 monthly payments. I have been doing that for years and I have a real lot of nice gear because of that. But now I prefer to pay cash to be sure I don't blow my budget. That is why low price is a priority for me now. I have also purchased two Grote electric guitars a GT-150 for $99 and a nice Hollowbody for $199. Surprise, they play as well, sound as good as my guitars that cost $2,000. So now that my eyes are opened-I know I can recommend saving money. Will the Chinese take over the world because of me? Well I am certainly contributing toward their success. If only I had more available income then I would continue paying higher prices for American Made gear. If you can afford it then please purchase American. As for me the Magnatone Starlite at $1,299 is out of my reach. I don't want to add it to my already heavy monthly Sweetwater payment. Which by the way I have already paid of in full twice and my credit limit is over $8,000. I guess I'm a grumpy old man for posting this here! -Peter age 71
agree'd, even if it was hand wired I wouldn't want to pay that much for it considering for $600 more I can get a vintage fender so yea nah, too much glue floating round that factory.. no way nota chance in hale $1200 for a 5 watt amp.. maybe it sounds good today, but when it shits the bed find someone who will work on your PCB nightmare.. no thanks.. just greed is all it is, hey would purchased the "Magatone" name gonna throw some asian junk at ya so grab your wallets, atm's and retirement funds.. then they try to make it sound li8ke its made int he USA but its the speaker, which is junk as well.. gimmie a good USa made speaker for $1200 or GFY.. I want a $200 Eminence for that kind of money cuz I know magnatone gets em wholesale for like $50 if they buy a thousands of em.. gimme a break, I was born in the day but not yesterday..
There’s 1001+ great pedals that can do the reverb if you want. A lot of people don’t want or need the amp for that. Adding a tune reverb tank would add a lot and cost for what they’re going for
These amp companies are cheap. What happened to having tone knobs? Volume, treble, mid, Bass, Reverb. Especially low powered amps. And a lot of them are still pretty expensive. John has some great chops.

And he's a really good player
He’s on a chair
@@helethead Thanks genius.
@@FlametopologyThanks! But if you think I am a genius just for noticing he is on a chair, you are not very smart at all.
Looks more like a stool guys. I'm a genius!
That tone sounds absolutely fantastic in all positions.
Yes! Been waiting to hear this lil thing. Been wanting to add another MAGNATONE to my arsenal and this is a contender
Well done, John. You have really shown this amp to its best advantage. Magnatone hit it out of the ballpark again
Excellent demo. Shows off the amp without pedals or being dimed all the time. Extremely informative.
This is it! The amp I was studying schematics and circuits to build! If we can only get it in 10 watts and 12” speaker !
The amp looks like it was found in a dusty back corner of a Bowling Center in 1958. (that is Not an insult).
John - your playing has grown SO much over the last few years
Very cool layout on this amp - JB you always seem to know the right thing to play to let whatever you're doing a demo on shine
John’s playing is always stellar but I particularly enjoyed this video. Great job showcasing this amp.
That 355 especially sounded great thru the Starlite. 5 watts thru an 8" speaker and a 6V6 like the classic tweed Champs. I see they're available for a relatively decent price. Very nice.
Was looking at these and told myself I'll live without it. Champ has me covered.... now I'm not so sure. Thanks a lot man! : )
Love John’s non biased, excitement for gear and musicians. Thanks for sharing!
John I have getting into Magnatone and LOVING every minute of it. I can’t wait to own one of these amps one day!!!
Really nice, I have a handful of 5 Watt amp , great to mic ,they get a wide range of Tone an don't kill you with volume. Get to hear this amp today , super demo! Thank you , cheers!

Definitely a gorgeous sounding amp.
Hey John!! Loved your stuff for years!! Jolynn and I went to school together!! Thanks for this demo!! Greetings from Billings!! Jeff
Wow, SWEET sounding amp! Just wish it had reverb or an effects loop... Also, very nice playing and review, John!
Blackface and tweed, pretty cool.
John, I have watched and listened to a million amp reviews and this one is my favorite for a few reasons. First of all, your playing is so nice to listen to. Second, that Tele style guitar suits you perfectly. Lastly, that little amp is really impressive! Thank you 🙏
The perfect match might be a small 4x10 cab for a bit of projection and tight punch.
Awesome review! Love small-low watt amps
Impressive little amp, but I really dig that Tele style guitar, it sounds great.
I Like this amp. Bought one from Sweetwater. Still learning it.
This amp is now selling for $1,799 on Sweetwater. Original price $1,299.
It must not have sold at that price, because it's back down under $1300
Wow best review on this awesome amp, gotta have one now, thank you so much for sharing, Appreciate your efforts and great playing btw😀👍
That sounded great John!!
That's a fantastic 5watt. I play bass and i want this for when i play my Les Paul .
Oh yeah John is my favorite Amp guitar demonstrator guy 👌
That thing sounds fantastic ! Cool 😎 !
I'm diggin that Mag tone!
Great video John,, !!
Such a great player, you should demo with Tele from now on.
Right on John 😎
Hey John,Another great review. I bought the new Keeley compressor after that review. Would love to own a Magnatone. Its got the look of a timeless classic for sure.
I was using the Keeyley on this for a bit. It really brought it up a notch, @keeley
We need John's rig rundown. It's over due
Where can I get some Sister Rosetta Tharpe folk art like you have there? Very cool
Ray Stephenson in Nashville painted it for me. Check out his work. He is amazing
I’m on the hunt for a 5 watt tweed Champ-style amp; I think I may have just found it. This will go perfect with the Harmony Juno I just bought.
John I want to see your rig rundown
Just a volume and tone switch! Whaaa! Are you sure there isn't an EQ somewhere? Can't be. It did sound good though. No gain unless you turn it up. Definite old school approach.
A bit of The Bulge. Killer tones
You play better than most of the guys you interview.
hes a Boss Pig!!!!
No
Killer 5 watt!
Great review!
John b always gets the best sound out of an amp !
love the look of that

Who is selling the Wathen CryoTone guitars? Cannot find them for sale!
Sounds very nice
My 50s starlet rocks. It's cool they kept the name...sort of. I'm guessing the circuit is completely different.

Great playing
list of pedals used? thanks, i enjoy your posts!
I put my Vox AC4C1 through a 4x12, and you can bet it can keep up with a loud drummer!
The reason to buy a Magnatone is for that incredible reverb and vibrato.
It still is.
As great as those effects are the core sound is where the value is for me
Really? . . Just for the Reverb and Vibrato? . . Nothing else? 🤔 . . . C'mon champ be reasonable here 🚬🥃👍
Great demo! Is John ok? I've seen a few demos with him, and he looks a little unwell here. Anyway, thanks for the first look!
COOL
JOHN IS BEST
NICE SHIRT
JB is one cool dude.
say what you will about John's playing style, at least it's unique!
wonder how it would sound with a fuzz in front !
Where do I get a shirt that cool??
Also, awesome playing and tone :)
good sound but i will stick with my fender bronco it was $ 200.00 at the flea market 1975 silver face has tremolo for days
Impressive 😎👍
Looks like Pure fun
the amp is on a mic... but what is the mic running too?
Make it with a 10" speaker.
Very nice.....
Thoughts on this vs the Tone King gremlin anyone?
I'll keep my '74 Champ.
What’s the name of that tele again?
It's a Cryotone... with a Glaser Bender
what do you got on that thing, 10's?
much prefer the tweed tones
Where is the FX loop at this price!
Who buys a magnatone without the Reverb and Vibrato :-/
Shit... with all these happening 5 watters. We can collect em like guitars. Back to work.
Shizz & Gizz lol. Neat little amp.
Plug a Les Paul in front and you’re in Neil Young/Crazy Horse territory.
And just some random Toby Keith in the mix. What can't you play man.
*blackface🙄
Cant call an amp black face now? 🤭Sweet amp.👍
A shame it has no reverb

$1300. I don’t think so.

$1200 for a PCB 5 watt amp? seriously?
Sounds boxy. As underwhelming an amp as I've ever heard.
