You know, everyone always say that Bismarck or Yamato were the greatest battleships of all time, and that they were better than the Iowa class battleships, I beg to differ. This is mostly for the Bismarck tho as Yamato is another can of worms for another day. This can be said by a few counter arguments I personally like to use. Random person #1: "Bismarck was the toughest naval vessel in WW2 it took the entire British Royal Navy to sink it. Me: Cool story did it survive 2 nuclear bombs and withstand multiple ship shell for 5 days straight like the USS Nevada. Random person #2: "Well the Bismarck had the best guns ever put on a ship." Me: Nice flex did those guns ever sink anything else except for the Battleship Hood, say for instance, an island, like the USS New Jersey. Random person #3: "Well Bismarck was the fastest ship traveling at 30 knots." Me: That's pretty fast but ALL, keyword ALL the Iowa class battleships travel at 35 knots. And also given the fact that all the Iowa class battleships are floating museums you can see anytime you'd like, and you need scuba gear to see the Bismarck, it raises the question what is it better at than being a sh###y submarine.
Actually Hood was a battlecruiser not battleship and you need a submarine to visit Bismarck not scuba gear. But Bismarck scuttled herself in her final battle which not many WW2 ships can claim.
Bismarck was at best capable of challenging British ships on equal footing. She was in no means superior to contemporary models, and in fact had some serious flaws in designs that were lost on them due to 20 years of not being allowed to build ships. Claiming she would be better than the Iowa class is bonkers. In fact, the reason the British went in panic mode is not because her battleships couldn't tackle Bismarck (Rodney and King George V curbstomped everything above the waterline once they caught her), but because allowing *any* battleship (or pocket battleship like 'Graf Spee') to potentially strike convoys for a while meant that *every* convoy needs adequate protection, and even the Royal Navy did not have that many ships. Any convoy lost would prolong the war and bring Britain one step closer to starvation. No matter how bad a gun is, if you put it on someone's neck they will react.
HMS Jamaica or HMS Belfast still got the killing blow on Scharnhorst. to be fair it took a bunch of ships to finish her off but German armor was pretty think. she still a good ship

Hong Kong was seen as the end of the empire. Plus when we gave India independence we still had, Egypt, parts of Africa, Malaya, Singapore, Hong Kong, some places in the Caribbean and probably some places in the Pacific.
