Many people in the Latino Community identify in different ways many times creating disagreements and even conflicts. As a mestizo I take an account not only my Spanish side but my native side and through my native ancestor side we can say that we have contributed massively to the U.S. economy with the inventions and contributions from both sides

Before the American southwest was Mexican, it was Spanish and before that it was Native American. Therefore the Native Americans were in the American southwest before the Spanish and Mexicans. Cope!
I was born in Puerto Rico, one of the last surviving American colony. As a Latino, I am sympathetic on the Mexican immigrant experience. Mexicans suffer from American discrimination as they attempt to demonstrate that they are human beings. Americans have no idea of the contributions provided by the Mexican immigrants. Without these immigrants, life in America wouldn’t be the same. If American’s believe that their lives are difficult, I can’t fathom how much more difficult it would have been without the help of the Mexican immigrant.

Our parents often shared stories about their experiences growing up in America. I was born in 1972, so I didn’t live through what they did, but I still feel like a second-class citizen today. If you disagree, then explain why we still need affirmative action. This country has been structured this way from the beginning. Even we contribute to the divisions by labeling ourselves-calling ourselves Hispanic, Mexican American, and so on. Why can’t we just identify as Americans?

The Spanish enslaved the Native American Indian and their off- Springs " the mexican" however, the Vitican or pope put a stopped to that . The Spaniards looked for a way to circumvent the law. The Spaniards married Indian girls and created their workforce. This is why we are hard working because we were created for that specific purpose. Not all of us consider ourselves mexican, cause mexicans looked down on us as well. Some of us are Chicanos and still maintain our native cultures. What's messed is that I live on the mexican side in order to afford to survive. I grew up with stories from my father that him many tribal members had to pretent they were mexican in order to be hired for work, because no one would hire "Indians" in those times.
Thank you for enlightening us. I got my green card at the age of 5. My father was a brasero in Texas. I am now a 67 year old American citizen. A lot of history is lost . Nobody taught us our history once we came to the U.S. We could not even speak our language in school at all.
Being in the food industry and having many other Latino brothers and sisters starting businesses and moving forward, ive never been more proud to see how so many of us have awaken and realized we can get ahead without a "poor me" mentality. So many other cultures enjoy our food, our work ethics and admire our determination to get ahead. Have we been wronged, yes, but so many other cultures have as well and we can all agree to move forward and enjoy the progress we've carved out for ourselves with our grit, education and determination. There's a reason the windshield is larger than the rear view window, because we should look forward and take pride of our progress and not focus on the negative past. Learn from our past yes, but not dwell on it and depend on government. We are strong and can achieve so much without handouts. Greater pride is had when we accomplish our victories as opposed to be handed a crumb and have to shut up.
We must not forget the past, so that it never repeats itself. If hispanics forget what “our” ancestors went through, many hispanics will vote for trump, this vermin wants to take us back to the way it was in the beginning of the 20th century; no rights, no equal opportuniy for education, home loans, voting, etc. for hispanics.

"Why are you seating with those Mexicans, youre white!" "Im Mexican too!" "But you look white, stop talking to them!" True scenerio my neighbor went thru during those times when going to the theater. He looked German, kinda like my Grandpa, except he was full blown Mexican. He admitted having it a little easier for looking a certain way. Blacks and Mexicans were not treated like people when out in the field.
A lot of our folks retained their European ‘look’ since even in Mexico they had a hierarchy based on the color of their skin and whether they were born in Europe (Spain etc) or not. Also there pockets of German migrants into Mexico who didn’t integrate much. Google it, it pretty cool!
A lot of people don’t understand being Mexican is a nationality not a race. Most common Mexicans are mestizos meaning mixed of European Spanish and Native American like Maya, Aztec, Zapotec etc. But in general Mexicans have diverse ancestry from many parts of the world. So because of our mixed genetics, some will look more European, Native American, Asian, Middle Eastern than others. The same principle can be applied to being an American. USA is a melting pot.
From the time I started kindergarten, up until I was in high school, I frequently was called a "dirty mexican". I couldn't understand it. I bathed every day. I brushed my teeth twice a day. My clothes were always clean. My gramma raised me and she was one of those women who world get up before sunrise to make breakfast, and clean the house. My gramma's house was so clean, you could lick the back of the toilet and know that it was just as clean as the bowl you used to eat your cereal! And my gramma would do that every day. Śo, why did they call me a "dirty Mexican" ?!
I'm sorry that you were called terrible things. I'm white, but I always preferred Mexicans to my own race. My three children are half Mexican. I used to tell everyone, that the fact that mixed race children are so beautiful, proves that God approves. We are only different races because of where we originated. Some people are too ignorant to know this. And what gets me the most, is how most whites believe Jesus was white, when the Bible states that his skin was the color of brunt brass. That is not white.

I am so glad I found your channel Rick….the signs I remember did not say anything about African Americans ….the signs were talking about Mexicans only not even about Peruvians or Bolivians or Cubans….and the signs were being used in Arizona, Texas…not in California….I remember thinking if the signs would say anything about Cubans they would blow up the place…as I remember the Mexicans that were migrating to USA were of the very poor kind from Mexico….not educated….therefore not very creative in their ways to fight for themselves….the other Latinos from the other countries were in general more educated and not that interested in fighting for the Mexicans specially that the non Mexican Hispanics were being treated in a very different way….the majority of the Hispanics were mexicans then. It was when African Americans started fighting to get more rights that the mexicans started fighting….the mexicans never, even today , they never had a MLK ….as far as how the non Mexican Hispanics are treated nowadays it depends how much the mexicans are willing to fight….individually some Hispanics are treated better than others…today Hispanics are treated bad mostly because they allow themselves to be mistreated…mexicans in Texas have a lot of political power and yet they chose to back up the guy in the wheelchair who doesn’t even care about them, they back up trump the very guy that promised to kick them out of this country….Hispanics in general still score very low in schools only blacks do worse than them….a little better than 50% of the Hispanic students graduate from high school compared to 90% of the Asian students….so my feeling is that if people act like second class citizens they will be treated like second class citizens….in closing Rick I hate to break it to you the Cuban history and the Mexican history in USA is totally different….
You are sadly mistaken and lumping a whole people into one category, is not right, it’s perpetuating stereotypes of people who have been active in fighting for their rights and have been inventive, creative, artistic, resourceful, resilient and successful. Mexicans in the US are a diverse group of people. There is a regional diversity, a diversity in language and in immigration. There is a uniqueness in the population with its close proximity to Mexico. The population ranges from indigenous to the southwest before it became the US, to generations that came in the early twentieth century to newcomers who arrive daily. Many descendants of these Mexicans families have been born, and living in the US for generations and 😊many are successful people who have been able to achieve their goals and dreams and contribute to this country. As a group they have fought for their rights and many newcomers have benefited from this. LULAC was founded in Texas and is the oldest Latino civil rights organization in the United States founded in 1929. There are other Latino organizations that have been founded too. But because of the segregation they had with whites and black people they wouldn’t allow my family to move into a white person’s neighborhood but only where they placed the black people and they lied to my grandpa about how land he was going to have. My grandma is full blood Spanish so we were/are light complexion as we say güeros/güeras. And we got it from alll sides. The black people (some) hated us for looking white or thought we’re white, the darker complexion Hispanics/latinos hated us because we were güero/güera, and white people hated us because we weren’t white. Don’t get me started on the DDT they sprayed literally on my family as they play outside they tried to run in but it still got into the home… they only sprayed it in the Hispanic/Latino and Black community…. Fast forward to the 60s, my cousin was at work and was joking around with her coworker but they were speaking in Spanish and laughing. Ok, so this white woman coworker passes by and says you can’t speak Spanish and you can’t talk about me. So the white woman goes to the Boss and complains. The next day they put signs all over the work place “speaking Spanish is not allowed Only English” Well, the women in my family do not tolerate bs…. My cousin grab the sign down went into the Boss’s office and said, This is discrimination, we did not talk about that woman, we have every right to speak whatever language we want, if you do not change this rule and take the signs down, I will sue you and this company for discrimination and more. Well, the same day ALL signs were taken down and they changed the rule. There’s so many more stories….even my own…. So, I, Thank God I have the family I have, their history, recipes and more. I’m soooo glad God made me into a very curious and loving history child plus I got along with all ages so I got to hear stories from my family members, etc. of different ages who went through discrimination in different decades. Again, I think you sooooo much for spreading the truth of our culture. God Bless y’all. I’ve been wanting sooo bad to buy books on my people. I’m not sure what books to get or where to start. Because when I was in school 90s-2000s they wasn’t anything about Hispanics and Latinos in our history books. Which angered me. Then thanks to my sister’s professor we found they also lied a lot in the text books, and her professor worked on my texted books and was angered they wouldn’t let him put the truth in the school text books.

If you're Not sure of someone's Heritage you CANOT call them Mexicano because they may well be Cuban and resent you for it just like you would the reverse so, Latino or Hispanic is an Umbrella term used to NOT Insult other people of Latin decent. A group of about twenty Salvadorenos perished in the Sonoran desert in 1980. That was not a major crossing area until the government by fortifying Tijuana and urban areas has pushed these people out in the desert.
👏👏👏👏
The Chicano movement changed a lot in the educational system and, so has the farmworkers union. Landmark law suits have made a difference for many Latino children in schools. Bilingual education and Chicano/ Mexican American studies…no we are not a docile, dumb people far from it.

Love this 💯 true history! And content.
And talk to my Dad... he has been on this since day 1...
I would say just refer to the Mexican American experience. Latinos/ Hispanic is a pan ethnic label created in the 1980's. So most latinos/ Hispanic didnt experience discrimination or segregation, since most of them came after the 1980's

This part of history is unknown to many people, domestic and internationally. It is not in books and very little out there, unless you do research. I thank all of you involved in bringing up awareness of our heritage. Saludos y gracias.
Hate that term, Latino.
Thank you for having this show. Please if you could make a list of must watch movies/documentaries.
Its so simple. In Mexico, if you are born here, you are Mexican and period. Regardless of you etnicitie. Of course we are not blind so a so called Afro Ameriican will be here a Negrito, Asian Chinito, European Guerito and so on but everybody is Mexican. No segregation. Yes, we also have some racist people but is the least.
Shut up
there is definitely a lot of segregation!
So freaking true, well said! ❤️🙏🏽

Important topic, thank you for bringing it forward. Would be even better a conversation, if the guest did not have to rush to get his words in. Again yhank you for the topic of conversation, new sub here.
I just want history to be as it was, back in those days nothing said, Latino or Hispanic. It was very specific to Mexicans. Now we have all been pulled into the same basket if you come from a Spanish-speaking country, but let’s be very clear that this was strictly against Mexicans and blacks that were descendants of slaves.
no shit genius back then it was only us Mexicans.
@@eloymorales1699 thanks for the genius part. 🧐😆😆 Conversations of this magnitude need to be specific to the historical context and events. I would like it to be remembered and understood for what it is and who it happened to. For more current events we can include as more “Latinos/hispanics” came to the United States 🇺🇸. Similar but different because Mexicans were specifically targeted 😉

Yes we do need a movie like roots for all Latinos and indigenous peoples.
I came to this country when I was 14 years old and since then I be came a united state citizen and I love this country like I was born here and I’m very proud to be a Latino..
You are right. That is what history books want us to believe, or perhaps it is true, but in reality, when I came to this country 45 years ago, I don't recall any people, teacher or politician running for office here in texas referring to Latinos or Hispanics, it was all Mexican or Mexican american.
Same. Born in 1996 I am Cuban and Colombian decent and white kids always called us “Mexican”.
If the majorty of people are Mexican and maybe cause it was their land then it makes sence that people would see more Mexicans ,if you go to Honduras people are gona see and call brown skin people Hondurans.if people represent where they from and are proud of the country their people came from then you won’t be confuse from being from somewhere else .and blaming history books ,just ask your parents or grandparents how life was when they were young here and what they remember from their parents how life was in their parents days .our bigest downfall was that we were very ignorant, now it’s so much easier to learn things and fast ,now it’s time to start making things right and also do it thrue the courts ,once we can prove what ever we are fighting for and that they violated our laws then that’s the main thing to win a case in court ,we can change the way they treat Mexicans ,not Latinos ,Mexicans ,where we should be left in peace and allow to live and work in the places that were ours before ,that’s the least they should do after how they been treating our people ,even putting them in prison for years just for coming over to work .

How come no Latino complains about this way more than they should? This is why I hold huge amounts of respect for Mexicans who paved the way for us Latinos ! I’m salvadorian and even though I didn’t see this in my days my ancestors did see slavery sadly !

You might be Hispanic claiming that rapist, slave master, colonizer, European blood. But, most Mexicans have majority indigenous blood or are mixed and the differences in regionalism culturally in most pueblos in Mexico and all countries south of the US are due to the unique cultural/linguistic differences of the Indigenous populations that existed there for thousands of years.......Most children who are born from a mother who has been brutally raped do not take on the criminal rapist father's family and identity denying their mother who nurtures their life, but those claiming Hispanic identity insist on doing exactly this! That's crazy.
Rick, you are absolutely right. We have to stand up for our rights now!!!!
0:58 "the original wet back were..." Didn't the Mexicans (who were started by Spain) seize land from natives? So, Mexicans aren't victims. North and South America were shaped by global empires and even native peoples sided with one colonial power over another. No one is innocent - our ancestors made their choices.
@@USA50_ Northern Europeans did all killings and slave trade profits and land taking, Spain built a huge civilization Hispanic America! Than you! God bless, from Texas 👍

@@USA50_ Mexicans were never started by the Spanish..that's a native term that originated from the mexicas(aztecs) the Spanish used it as an umbrella term for all natives... also the Spanish wanted to name Mexico new Spain.
When mestizos took this land over from Spain, land was already taken from the natives, by Spain. Mestizos just inherited by defeating Spain. So you’re wrong.

First thank y’all immensely, especially the film maker.
The only thing I ask of the film maker or those who have rights to show
Please make it available for the public
I’m able to watch it on PBS through an account
I known some of this history because I was blessed to have baby boomers as parents.
And the stories I’ve been told… sorry this is very emotional for me I’m tears as I write this
This is during the 1940s, my Mexican Grandfather was originally a farmer, he worked on white folks farms and finally after alllll his hard work they told him “ I ain’t going to pay no Mexican”
So he moved the whole family to the city.
The next day they put signs all over the work place “speaking Spanish is not allowed Only English”
Well, the women in my family do not tolerate bs….
Craziness…. 😒
Thank you for sharing ❤

Migraned to the US in 95, I was 6 y.o., and now today Im 35 and its too late to be taken serious in this country. Mexico has upgraded their Presidents to the first women president who advocates for the working class, and the marginalized Mexicans.
For those who were born in the states that used to be Mexico, I understand if you see yourselves as Americans versus Mexicans, even when you were never treated as such. I studied, played, and grew up in Virginia and love VA , but my heart is always aching to return one day to Mexico. ❤ Viva 🇲🇽
The past but it’s not Mexico it’s one of the 50 state USA not Mexico even though everyone wants to fall back and repeat that California was Mexico. But it’s lets get it right we are considered Americans born in the USA 🇺🇸 but even if not being treated right we still have more rights than a foreigner bc this is our home USA. The small community he was born was so anti Mexican that they burned a mexican with wood that was green so that they coud watch him suffer more, after they murded, tourtured, and mulated a young Mexican teenager cause he was being too friendly with a white girl. It sounds unreal but it happened. So sad but true.
