To those who criticize the appearance of the QE class of RN carriers and two islands causing a rather unorthodox appearance, the reason is really quite simple. The forward island is for the ship's company who drive the ship. The aft island is for the control of flight operations on the flight deck for both helos and the eventual arrival of the F35Bs. As an American who's used to seeing a single island and now on the FORD Class much farther back along the starboard side of the ship, I think the RN's concept and execution will prove itself over time. With the forward island placed as far up the flight deck as it is, it will make ship handling easier and more efficient, while the air group has its own island dedicated to flight operations only. I say WELL DONE again, RN!
The British split the island up fore and aft as you said for good reasons. But the real reason is they built the islands incorporated with the two different stacks, funnels... They could have merged the two stacks into one stack, but doing so consumed too much hangar and deck space. Better to go straight up...
And not just a carrier, but a proper full-sized fleet carrier. The three "through deck cruisers" of the Invincible class were too much a half-hearted compromise in their design. The HMS Queen Elizabeth is the real thing!

A buddy of mine was a supervisor on the building crew of this great ship and while visiting him in Scotland last Sept I got an up close view of her in dry dock, what a wonderful ship!!! Way to go William!!!!!
Words can't describe the Pride of seeing the Royal Navy bringing the newest Aircraft carrier into Portsmouth, an absolutely fantastic sight, now, I just can't wait to see her showing off her fixed Wing Squadrons
About the people complaining about the cost, being American, at least it was made domestically that is how many highly paid skilled workers and apprentices learning ship building earning good wages and spending them, plus the cost to maintain this fine ship and update her, its a nice domestic money maker. They could have bought a carrier we already had and updated it and not have all those jobs and skills being developed back home. She is a fine ship.

I live nearby and would be thrilled to be able to take a tour of her if the RN opened her up to the public during such a port visit. You better wait and see if the damn thing moves under its own power before making claims like that. U.S. Iowa-class battleships with a hell of a lot more hydrodynamic hulls, steam turbines, 4 screws and what many knowledgeable marine engineers consider the finest oil-fired steam-turbine powerplants ever built and possible to build needed 200,000+ shaft horsepower to knock down 30+ knots. Your little diesel-electric toy aircraft carrier ain't got the smoke to run that speed on its best day, chief. Its already a foregone conclusion one piece of shit will be in "refit" while the other piece of shit is "operational" and the British "government" has been talking about missions to respond to "natural disasters" being a main "priority". Gonna be a little hard to fight a war tied up to the dock in some 3rd-world "Commonwealth" country's harbor playing "gen-set" as the piss-poor "people of color" aka "natives" play "rebuild the shacks" while white British "naval officers" sit on their toy boat and watch through binoculars. Between afternoon tea and "pour-out", of course. My guess is that as usual, if there is a "real war", God forbid, or some worthwhile military mission in a real shithole area of the planet that is that way because of centuries of British interference and imperialism, and there is a major effort at building a "coalition", the Brits will find something "offensive" in a "colony" or "overseas territory" to respond to. An Argentine flag flying over British soil or an "uprising" in Sierra Leone or a "natural disaster" that will prevent either of these floating jokes from going to war in any real capacity. And no doubt about the time the old lady in the crown kicks the bucket and Prince Inbred takes the throne there will be an "around the world tour" or two with King Dipshit commandeering his mommy's ship or his own namesake "warship" to go "show the flag". Then it'll be time for a "refit". Marine diesels aren't terribly reliable and usually they power "disposable" ships like tankers, freighters, etc. And those alternators and motors will need brush replacement and the Brits will as usually find plenty of reason to have their "warships" parked at home where they're handy for "royal jubilees" and other important functions.

@Tom she was running at 29.2 knots briefly yesterday on AIS (ahem) so it all looks peachy. Does anybody know why, if you can answer, why we never see the S1850M rotating? In every video I see its almost always static. Can this be used as a staring array since its a PESA set or is 997 deemed enough during trials?
Pablo Jay Initial sea trials are testing the hull, propulsion machinery, auxiliary machinery, steering gear, and hundreds of inter related main & auxiliary systems, that also includes fresh water, heating & air conditioning, electrical distribution, galleys, refrigeration etc etc, once those systems are proven and the ship is sound they will move ahead with bringing all the other departments up to operational levels, which includes sensors. There will be a big set of trials just to bring the flight deck into use efficiently. In my opinion most probably the last system to go live will be the CIWS just before HMS Queen Elizabeth commissions, there will most likely be a requirement to give her a small refit including defect rectification prior to commissioning into service too, there's a very long list to run through before then.

Hi/ to make my reply simple, the American and french nuclear aircraft carriers require a battle group to protect them from her enemies , ! The British take the view that the Battle group is not nuclear powered so what’s the point of having a non refuelling aircraft carrier when the whole battle group needs refuelling. Logic or not ?
The Tornado is 40 years old, knackered and about to retire. There is no naval variant of the Typhoon, it's not designed to fly off ships and it couldn't anyway because the ship is designed for vstol aircraft
@Matty, a "marinized" Tiffie would have meant a complete redesign costing money many according to BAEs, of course they were ready to do the deal, think they did an assessment. Lots of issues arose, curiously one around forward visibility on approach due to the canards at the desired landing AOA. As has been ably said, no cats n Traps, EMALS, etc. The UK had an EMALS solution can`t remember its name though and we probably dropped it when the STVOL decision was made. Hey ho.
It's conventionally powered so it requires a certain amount of space in the islands for exhausts, if you look at most other conventionally powered carriers they have one much longer island. This just makes better use of that space, puts navigation and flight ops in better positions for their roles, but provides redundancy in case of damage, helps with flight deck stability, reduces interference between the long and medium range radars and separates the two main engines (As they're directly below the islands to reduce the amount of exhausts that run through the ship).
In cars in a city with lots of people, no. In a ship out at sea, it's not such a problem and there really isn't much of an alternative for ships this size - other than nuclear which is many times more expensive.
The carrier should be in the Mediterranean off North Africa Coast. The carrier is gonna be a State of the Art Customs. To provide , beds, food, clinical activities providing MRI scans, surgeries, English schools, printing British Passports to "new" British citizens and creating jobs! Fishermen!
It's splitting the standard long island design that conventionally powered carriers have. It comes with a few advantages, better positions for their respective roles (Flight ops and navigation), better flight deck stability, reduces the interference between the long range and medium range radars and provides some redundancy as both can perform each others roles in the event of damage. The two main engines are also placed directly below the islands as it's using an electric propulsion system, so the ducting just needs to go directly up, saving on space. Splitting them helps reduce the risk of damage to both. Basically using the same if not less space than it otherwise would have and comes with a fair few advantages, a couple of other countries are starting to design carriers in a similar style.
My son is on this amazing ship and I am very proud of him and the Navy. He is very proud to serve this country and protect us.

Could be possible next year, she's scheduled to visit the US east coast to pick up its F-35B and begin flight trials along with the US Marines.
The latest Audit report reckons its looking like QE IOC will be pushed up if all things go well, 2020 timeframe.

Its "sister ship" is going to "take its place" during "workups" for actual flight operations with F-35s after its own "sea trials" which puts it in 2020 before any "flight operations" happen on either ship at the earliest as far as real-deal operational capability.
Its already a foregone conclusion one piece of shit will be in "refit" while the other piece of shit is "operational" and the British "government" has been talking about missions to respond to "natural disasters" being a main "priority". Gonna be a little hard to fight a war tied up to the dock in some 3rd-world "Commonwealth" country's harbor playing "gen-set" as the piss-poor "people of color" aka "natives" play "rebuild the shacks" while white British "naval officers" sit on their toy boat and watch through binoculars. Between afternoon tea and "pour-out", of course.
My guess is that as usual, if there is a "real war", God forbid, or some worthwhile military mission in a real shithole area of the planet that is that way because of centuries of British interference and imperialism, and there is a major effort at building a "coalition", the Brits will find something "offensive" in a "colony" or "overseas territory" to respond to. An Argentine flag flying over British soil or an "uprising" in Sierra Leone or a "natural disaster" that will prevent either of these floating jokes from going to war in any real capacity.
And no doubt about the time the old lady in the crown kicks the bucket and Prince Inbred takes the throne there will be an "around the world tour" or two with King Dipshit commandeering his mommy's ship or his own namesake "warship" to go "show the flag". Then it'll be time for a "refit". Marine diesels aren't terribly reliable and usually they power "disposable" ships like tankers, freighters, etc. And those alternators and motors will need brush replacement and the Brits will as usually find plenty of reason to have their "warships" parked at home where they're handy for "royal jubilees" and other important functions.

@Tom she was running at 29.2 knots briefly yesterday on AIS (ahem) so it all looks peachy. Does anybody know why, if you can answer, why we never see the S1850M rotating? In every video I see its almost always static. Can this be used as a staring array since its a PESA set or is 997 deemed enough during trials?
Pablo Jay Initial sea trials are testing the hull, propulsion machinery, auxiliary machinery, steering gear, and hundreds of inter related main & auxiliary systems, that also includes fresh water, heating & air conditioning, electrical distribution, galleys, refrigeration etc etc, once those systems are proven and the ship is sound they will move ahead with bringing all the other departments up to operational levels, which includes sensors. There will be a big set of trials just to bring the flight deck into use efficiently. In my opinion most probably the last system to go live will be the CIWS just before HMS Queen Elizabeth commissions, there will most likely be a requirement to give her a small refit including defect rectification prior to commissioning into service too, there's a very long list to run through before then.

Hi/ to make my reply simple, the American and french nuclear aircraft carriers require a battle group to protect them from her enemies , ! The British take the view that the Battle group is not nuclear powered so what’s the point of having a non refuelling aircraft carrier when the whole battle group needs refuelling. Logic or not ?

The Tornado is 40 years old, knackered and about to retire. There is no naval variant of the Typhoon, it's not designed to fly off ships and it couldn't anyway because the ship is designed for vstol aircraft
@Matty, a "marinized" Tiffie would have meant a complete redesign costing money many according to BAEs, of course they were ready to do the deal, think they did an assessment. Lots of issues arose, curiously one around forward visibility on approach due to the canards at the desired landing AOA.

Beautiful ship, but why two islands? Seems like a waste of valuable flight deck space.
It's conventionally powered so it requires a certain amount of space in the islands for exhausts, if you look at most other conventionally powered carriers they have one much longer island.
This just makes better use of that space, puts navigation and flight ops in better positions for their roles, but provides redundancy in case of damage, helps with flight deck stability, reduces interference between the long and medium range radars and separates the two main engines (As they're directly below the islands to reduce the amount of exhausts that run through the ship).

In cars in a city with lots of people, no. In a ship out at sea, it's not such a problem and there really isn't much of an alternative for ships this size - other than nuclear which is many times more expensive.

The carrier should be in the Mediterranean off North Africa Coast. The carrier is gonna be a State of the Art Customs. To provide , beds, food, clinical activities providing MRI scans, surgeries, English schools, printing British Passports to "new" British citizens and creating jobs! Fishermen!

It's splitting the standard long island design that conventionally powered carriers have. It comes with a few advantages, better positions for their respective roles (Flight ops and navigation), better flight deck stability, reduces the interference between the long range and medium range radars and provides some redundancy as both can perform each others roles in the event of damage.
The two main engines are also placed directly below the islands as it's using an electric propulsion system, so the ducting just needs to go directly up, saving on space. Splitting them helps reduce the risk of damage to both.
Basically using the same if not less space than it otherwise would have and comes with a fair few advantages, a couple of other countries are starting to design carriers in a similar style.
I bet the USN next carriers post Ford class will have twin islands.
