#Casio #CTK2550 #Keyboard
Introduction:
In this piano review video, Stu Harrison of Merriam Pianos guides us through an overview of Casio’s portable keyboard, the CTK-2550. It’s a value-packed, fun and lightweight keyboard that works equally well as a musical toy, or as a small stage augmentation to a band or primary keyboard.
Although it’s unusual for us to review an instrument that’s shorter than 88 keys here on the channel, the popularity of this specific model made us curious...and, well, here we are!
We hope you enjoy it, and if it’s the first time to the channel, please subscribe!!
Tone Engines & Sound:
The tones and sound generation on the CTK2550 are definitely basic in nature - it is capable of stereo signal, but many of the patches are mono to preserve processing capacity and keep the price as low as possible. It goes without saying that for something under $200, my expectations were low to begin with, and the key to this instrument lies in the simplicity of its use, and its ability to quickly and quite competently generate a rhythm / bass accompaniment for a singer or other instruments.
The CTK2550 has over 400 sounds and about half as many rhythms on it, so while the quality may be rudimentary, the variety is stellar. In fact, I might even say there’s a bit of a lo-fi charm about instruments like this that definitely have a place in the sonic fabric of professionally-made music.
The Action:
Much like the sound, the action is a simple straight-forward design. It’s a spring-loaded, single-part key with no touch sensitivity, doesn’t have graduated weighting, and no acoustic action simulation. Big deal if you’re already a player and this is either for fun, travel, or as a novelty addition to your stage setup. If you’re a parent however, I’d strongly suggest passing on this as an ‘at-home’ setup and look for something with weighted 88 notes.
Other Features:
The biggest feature areas of this keyboard are 1) Intelligent Accompaniment, which allows the user to select different styles of drum+bass accompaniment, such as rock, pop, jazz, waltz, etc…. and 2) “Dance Music” mode...which is similar to many of the EDM synced phrase machines like ROLI blocks or some of Ableton’s functionality. You can basically activate or deactivate layers of instrumental sound that are all synced together in time, so it’s like muting and unmuting layers that are already there in the background.
This is where the imnstrument is likely to be used the most in my opinion..I could see this being the backing tracks along with a bass, solo instrument like a guitar or sax, and a vocalst, for a small wedding band or street entertainment group. Or as I found, just having a blast yourself in a living room.
Conclusions:
While it can’t be called a piano, it doesn’t mean it isn’t an instrument. Inexpensive, portable, and well thought-out, this could make for a great travel instrument, a writing partner, or a basic backing instrument for a small band. Have fun with this one!

This is actually pretty good for beginners and on a tight budget like myself.
Your piano solo at 12:30 is impeccable!! 😂🙏🏿 thank u for sharing!
This goes to show that it is not about equipment, but it is about the player. Great review, thank you so much. You have helped me greatly with my purchase decision.
I actually had this keyboard and it's great,go ahead and buy this!!
I don't think we've seen you have this much fun on a keyboard before, lol. I'm glad your editor kept in the dance music. I grew up with a PSR-47 and I spent hours and hours goofing off on that thing. There's something special about cheap, small keyboards with simple action and tons of buttons and features to get lost in.
"cheap small keyboards with simple action and tons of buttons and features to get lost in"
U r right! 😊

I enjoyed this video waaay too much, I never thought I'd see such high level playing and analysis of a piano like this. Great stuff though, pleasure to see you take it seriously... Nearly cracked at 12:26 though... which was actually followed by a killer solo!
I mean, is it even a proper review if you don't bicep curl the piano at some point!? Great stuff!

AYou gave an honest representation without being despairing thank you sir
I've had mine for a few years and play for enjoyment. If I wanted to become a student or even semi-pro I agree it has sound issues (guess because it's spring loaded) I'm not a professional. For the money though, it has been a great purchase. I took lessons as a child, but never stuck with it, this keyboard has rekindled my interest in playing music. Great review, I never noticed the difference between spring loaded and weight! Thanks for explaining and playing-
Well said, and really appreciate the comments. Thanks! -stu
I use keyboards like this all the time, the lack of touch sensitivity is perfect for loud music, as a matter of fact, 95% of pro level boards come with a touch sensitivity toggle feature, you don't have to hit the keys as hard to get the full volume, extending the life of your keyboard, I'll never understand why keyboards like this are viewed as inferior instruments, any musician worth their salt can play just as effortlessly on unweighted, non touch sensitive keyboards, the guy in this video did it, Kris Nicholson has done it, Rich Formadoni has done it, and I've been doing it for 15 years
thanks for highlighting the touch sensitivity..
This is actually my first piano, ill probably buy an even better one.
I just got one today, how do you like yours?
@@wyntermckenzietv9408 I’ve had mine for at least a year now and everything still works fine no problems at all just that it not having touch sensitivity can be a bit frustrating depending on what your playing
You are great, keep doing what you do-- I needed this keyboard just to reinforce learning Theory. My piano is downstairs but I needed a keyboard upstairs!
I just ordered this for my daughter! This video convinced me! Thanks!
If she’s 15-17 let me know
Digital Keyboards are seen as totally different a instrument from Pianos and are taught professionally in Asia.
Great information, Stu Harrison. Your informative reviews are helping me make a tough decision re keyboard!
A fucking great instrument! Who cares if it is a cheap keyboard toy? It is enough to create great tunes!
Right right the value of technology is to disperse cheap usable musical possibilities to the people. Still at least touch sensitivity would be useful.
Not if you play loud music.....
Great overview. I have the 2500 model from way before and it has 85% same features and almost identical interface. I call these portable E KEYBOARD. The 2500 must be well less than $100 these days. Mine was eBay and the box had no cushioning. Came through. Very toughly built.
Thank you kindly! That is awesome to hear! They're great little portable keyboards that are quite durable as you've mentioned. :)
Thank you!! Very helpful review A+++
Amazing review, ive had it for a while and this video made me start again. you play beautifully. thank you
I've had instruments like this in the past and enjoyed them. I'd like to see you do a whole series on these mini keyboards and how they compare to one another. I'm a fan of the instruments with 3/4 size keys. Are they still sold?
You're seems to be having fun there :D
You are the best! Can you review the Roland RD-88? Thank you!
I was never interested in the piano, but half a year ago I was fooling around in the tablet and decided to learn the melody from the game. I was very hooked then, but I put it on the back burner. Now my choice fell on this device. I'll probably buy it.
That is awesome to hear! We never know when inspiration will strike. :)
Wow. I just learned something today. Thank you. 👍
Honest review !!! Very good
This is a great review! Thank you very much
What affordable electric piano would you recommend as a practicing instrument for kids that are working with a teacher on the acoustic piano?
how about ctk-3000? Would you recommend that for a beginner? I am a singer. I want to learn how to play piano to add up something with my talent
I have a question
Which is better
Casio ct s200
Or
Casio ctk 2550
Ill recommend ctk
Great video, what's a good affordable piano for a beginner ? Thanks
Thanks so much! The Roland FP10, Kawai ES120, and Casio PXS1100 are all excellent pianos for the money! :)
Wow I was just enjoying your amazing expertise you are real master !!!
Casio is the best Keyboard maker in my opinion
What is the best keyboard piano for beginners I need help please
Sounds great!!!!!😃
Is there any way by which I can record what I am playing on my phone using headphones?
I got problem with this keyboard. When I press keys especially in a chord, extra notes are playing and that make the chord sound incorrectly. I'm so frustrated with it. Thought of using hair dryer to fix the problem that may be caused by humidity and even disassembled it to directly air the circuit board, it is just fixed temporarily but the problem this goes back quickly. I'm so fruatrated because I can't afford to buy a new one huhuhu. Hope there will be a deeper tutorial to solve it.
It does not sound good. The reverb even set at 10, it feels like there is no reverb. Also piano tunes from 1-15 does not sound good enough. Agree?
@@mayuraitavadekar7968 man, I think I got the wrong keyboard for the money I hardly saved huhuhu
When you play chords on the left by playing one note, it assumes major chord. It’s that not the case?
Recommend stand style brand etc for ctk-2500 keyboard please
My son just bought one in new condition for 15.00 at good will he’s lucky like that he bought a beautiful Alvarez acoustic guitar fro 12.00 at a thrift store only had 2 strings on it home run.
Those sound like some very solid deals! :)
looks like you're having fun
Is there a possibilty to connect it to computer for a software like fl studio?
इंडियन ब्रांड भाई 🦁🙏🔥
Do you think it would be good to record drum tracks with it through my interface with reaper?
It is certainly an option, but I feel like you could get a far superior drum sound through VST plug-ins and other drum sample libraries.
@@MerriamPianos oh, I'm fairly new to all this, thanks
What’s the best way to learn those jazz style chords and solos?,I strictly play by ear,I like Diana kralls jazz style on piano,I just don’t have a clue how to get started on this stuff.
Professor Goss (that dude who plays in Vulfpeck) does some jazz piano tutorials
How can I record my own song on it without an external device? Does it have the capability to store songs on it? Because I have been looking on all my settings and can’t find out how to record on it someone help
Is it better than ct-s300?
Love it!!
Correst. Weighted keys and touch sensitive is important for practice.
Absolutely! It is definitely an important feature to look for when shopping for an instrument in my opinion.
What are its outputs ? Is it a MIDI as well🤔 XLR?😫
Touch sensitivity?
It can split or not???
I don't believe the CTK2550 has a split function. Most smaller keyboards like this do not have that option.
how do we get the app tho-
I never knew I will see the day Stu is playing with a toy piano...
SCD Observer it’s not a toy. I actually own one and they are pretty nice. Definitely not toys.
Why would people spend 100s of $ for a toy piano?
sathvik hero Exactly great point am I right??
What makes it a toy? The fact that it lacks touch sensitivity? All midrange and pro boards have a touch sensitivity toggle feature, non touch sensitive keyboards are perfect for loud music, you dont have to beat the keys as hard to get the full volume, I have over 30 acoustic pianos, digital pianos and keyboards, and when I'm playing hard rock or fusion, I use keyboards like this one
How do you have 2000 aubs without any videos?
It's great to listen to you play. But I need specific instructions, which you are glossing over.
I'm planning to buy a piano keyboard as i want to really learn. It seems theres an issue here with casio ctk 2550 because its not weighted and no touch sensitivty? What keyboard could best help me though if im on a budget? If anybody knows the song Bellas Lullaby thats the first i really wanna learn. 🥺
I would recommend the Alesis Recital. It has a really good sound for the $250 price and comes with touch sensitive, semi-weighted keys. You could also get the pro version which has fully weighted keys if you're willing to spend an extra hundred dollars.
@@timur2175
Does it offer a better sound?does it offer a USB port please? Thanks in advance
Does it have transpose?
Yes
My fav one...ctk series
Can you also review vst like pianoteq and Keyscape!! Rock on!!
Is this good for intermediates?
I think this is good for players of every level, depending on style of music. Learning classical piano would be difficult on an instrument like this (not impossible), but I found this to be fun for sure!
@@MerriamPianos can we connect this to a speaker for output
Guys help me out so I bought this keyboard when I was a beginner now iam and intermediate player so can you guys suggest me a better keyboard 🙏 😁
Can u review synthesizers
I have watched so many videos on casio keyboards today. Why does every single person doing these videos just focus on the piano sounds and not the organ or any other sound? All I want is to find one with a good organ sound but every single person plays all the different piano sounds and then moves on the the rhythm section.
It has 61 keys,5 octaves actually.Not only 3 or 4.
15:30
Not bad.
can i use a microphone with this, does it have a microphone port?
Hi there, unfortunately no mic input, you'd have to have that separately into an amp! -stu
@@MerriamPianos
Aw man. How about the ctk 3500?
Can u recommend the next best keyboard, a step up from the ctk 3500 please? Thanks in advance
👍🏼
:)
The camera angle on this review should be facing the piano keyboard.
This keyboard has touch sensitivity
There is a lot of key noise in this piano
You
How do i play like toy
Very disappointed in this review. A piano player spent less than a third of the video demoing a dozen out of 400 voices (not even one organ voice) and then over half the video on what is a glorified drum machine.
😂
GET TO THE POINT !!!! PLEASE
