Dude, who in the world would have negative comments to leave about you or this channel?!?!? I'm so sorry you've had to cope with that. Your energy is positive, reassuring, and homespun in the best of all possible ways. Hope you keep going for a long time to come.

Very interesting. I’m a watcher on UA-cam . I learn how to do things like, put a dimmer switch in, cook a certain meal, clean my porch deck, paint my cupboards, crafting…I even learned how to change the oil in my car. UA-cam has been a valuable resource for learning. Yes, I did pay attention to your declutter episode…keep doing what you do! Don’t change a thing….well…maybe have your sweet mom on more. 💕

UA-cam also does a thing called "shadow banning". If your channel has been on for a long time they pull it from the algorithm altogether. They dont notify you either. You start to notice no new subscribers. I learned that from another channel i follow. Tim, you are looking healthy! New Retired Me seems to be doing pretty good considering it doesn't have a niche!😂 Have a great day!😊❤

I decided to return to UA-cam solely for myself, and my "first" video goes up tomorrow. I wanted the structure it adds to my week, the challenge of making, and getting better at making, videos, the connection with others on my topic, and the ability to share what I know and am doing in my studio. I was monetized and left over a year ago for all the reasons you mentioned, and I missed some of the positive aspects. I'm in it again, this time for those other benefits to my creative and mental health and not to jump through the hoops. I'll let any income be a bonus. Your thoughts confirmed that objective. Thank you.

You've verified very clearly my views re UA-cam - It's not there for the average creator to make a living from it. Fortunately, I place really only to provide a service, i.e. how to get the most out of being a retiree. Really like your down to earth style, Tim.

I honestly don't believe UA-cam was designed to be a source of income, but it has.
UA-cam rules the means of engagement. Now, the bots are on overload lol.
As a platform it's competitive. Most viewers follow a few at least, that's me.
It's very obvious you make a difference. I don't believe you need a niche. It's a source of creative expression. Leave it at that.
As the country evolves so will viewers and topics. So take the season of opportunity with content, and when it ends, so be it. We all have been blessed by your contributions.
    😊

Great video! I’m always tuning in and absolutely love it when you put out a new video. I know we’re advised to find “a Niche” but I feel just sharing your interests and knowledge will grow a following of like minded people. Go with the flow I guess… that’s how I plan on moving forward with my channel once I’ve minimized to what I feel is realistic for me… hence the name of my channel 👍. My biggest challenge is how busy my life is at the moment. I know I have plenty to share but I’m on a time crunch 😳. Who knew I’d be so busy once I retired! I put out my intro video and 1 other… then life came at me full throttle. Both my sons moving out at the end of July, getting my home ready to put on the market has been insane. All this with my lack of experience filming, editing, posting and finding a few moments to learn new things has been impossible right now. My time management is currently nonexistent. 😢

I knew that being a UA-camr was sometimes difficult, but I never knew that bots controlled the whole platform. How scary is that? WOW! Hi Tim, as a content creator, I've found the biggest thing for me is that I, like you, built my channel to leave a legacy of stories and life lessons for my sons. I talk about all sorts of things on my channel, and when I talked about music and TV/films, my channel gained some traction.
However, in order to continue getting views, I started straying from the path I originally started the channel for.
Around a month ago, I decided I wasn't happy making videos that didn't do anything for me, so I consciously decided to go back to my original direction for the channel.
The result is that my views have dropped back to much lower levels than I'd been accustomed to getting. Whilst I was disappointed for a little while, I realised that I feel much better doing content that I think is of value, and although my stories tell of life-lessons for my sons, it's humbling when I get comments saying that my video has helped someone with a struggle their having. To be honest, that gives me more of a thrill than a jump in views.
As for the algorithm, I don't worry about it. Over time, my videos will find an appreciative audience, and I'll be happy with that.
I'm 64 next month and looking toward retirement, so the income from UA-cam would be helpful, but as you'll be aware, it's nowhere close to yours at my level, and so instead of worrying about it, I'll focus on what value my videos can bring to my viewers/followers, and more importantly, to my sons.
As you said, the connection with my viewers is a joy for 99% of the time. I love hearing from them and some of the stories they share are truly humbling. I feel honoured that they care to share them with me.
All the best. I really enjoy your channel(s). James

I am feeling good about having a video get to over a 1000 views! I still struggle at what to say in the very beginning, like you said the attention span is short and you need to hold them for at least 30 seconds, which doesn’t seem like very long but in UA-cam time it is! How long is too long a video? Are shorter ones better? 15 minutes? I struggle because i like to talk!

I agree about the satisfaction from being part of a community. One segment of my viewers are cash budgeters and they are incredibly supportive of one another. The larger channels will give shout outs to smaller channels to help them grow their subscriber base. Some have “Watch Hour Wednesdays” where they direct viewers to channels which need watch hours. And for their viewers who aren’t creators, they offer freebies consistently. It’s amazing. I also love playing with creative apps.
Since I don’t appear on camera, my greatest challenge is the time it takes to find or create visuals to use in my videos and then doing voice overs. Very lengthy process v

Hi Tim, I started my UA-cam channel to recall memories so
similar to the way Facebook shows daily memories
It's the only platform that I think will be around tech wise for a long time. I would have loved to be able to see my grandparents live their lives on video. That years from now, UA-cam will have my history preserved for my future generations. That being said, I'd also love to build a community, but I'm finding that harder. People don't usually respond to my videos and my subscribers are low.
I'm happy that I am leaving a bit of me for prosperity.
I enjoy your videos. I've been a watcher since your 4th video.

Not a content creator, but interested in how it works and the people who do it. Your garden tour video was served up to me the other day because I'm a gardener and watch a lot of that type content. I enjoyed that video a lot, watched some of your other videos, and became a new subscriber. It's funny how those algorithms work. I sell on Etsy and have benefited from and been victimized by it's whims, lol. Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching all your past videos. And in case you haven't showed them yet, I'd love to see your mom's hostas (the ones she was saving eggs shells for). 🙂

I had debated just this week about Not because of trolls, but because of the insistence on pushing shorts and news and politics. I typically watch on 1 of 2 channels. This being the main place I watch, and GGM Creates the second. I wound up niching this channel down because it was really hard when I was diagnosed with histamine intolerance to find information. Much of the advice I found was recommending starving yourself until you abdolutely had to eat to survive. Because when I finally found a few people the relevent content had been buried by new niches and the algorithm forgot about it, I wanted to maintain visibility. So I started a second channel, and that is where I post decluttering, gardening, and hopefully in the near future some sewing content. On that channel I run a travel related collaboration called the Raid Parade. So every Friday I am bouncing around the world through a series of premieres and hanging out with friends. I also joined a collab about decluttering and cleaning, so I watched some of that, and I watched content about learning foreign languages. French, Italian, and a Native American one, Potowatomi. And 1 non-dramatic channel that covers the royal families from most of the world. But over time, I cant seem to get away from the political agenda of UA-cam. I try to avoid the news in everyday life, and I routinely request not to see videos from news channels. Unfortunately I cant seem to go on that channel without seeing clips of bombings, gunfights, hate crimes (from either side), and all of the politics about everything. I dont know how to get rid of it. I dont know if I subscribed to someone that was political and I didnt know it or what. Last week I just gave up. Only went for the collab I run, and then leave. I've also picked up a renewed desire to cut back on youtube. I have tried goinv to rumble, but of course many people are there because of political censorship here. Ive tried spotify, iheartradio, substack, and a few others. My hope is that I can reduce my time spent to 3 hours or less per day. They actually have studies saying 4 hours is the threshhold that starts affecting mental health. And Im sure attention span should bd in tgere too since everh other video is a section of shorts on the channel still willing to show me something other than news. Or whatever it is you want to call it since news should theoretically be unbiased journalism. Anywho, hopefully that will be enough because the current stuff they are pushing sends my anxiety through the roof, and my mental state through the floor. But here's hoping that I can pivot and spend more time creating than consuming in the coming days.

As a new UA-cam channel, in the most unsexy of niches, I have to be really creative in my videos about planning for the lifestyle you want in your gold years. But it's my passion. If I can help just one person understand the importance of estate planning, or making their home safe to age in place, or help them with their stubborn parents, I will call it a win.

I think the distinction between real life and digital life is something like this. In real life we telegraph very clearly who we are and what we will accept from others. This has the effect of narrowing our social interactions to a self-selected group of people who want or like or can accept what we are, what we offer. Online, all the people who would have been screened out by this in person process, don't get screened out. They stick around and throw rocks from the side, without consequence. These people are not your audience, they are people who in real life you'd pass on, and who in real life they'd also pass on you too. Because in real life they don't have the nerve or permission to spit their venom the way they have the cover to do online. That's it.

There are channels i subscribed to, which if I don't have time to watch the channel in a week, suddenly their videos stop getting recommended. Then, it's into me to realize I haven't seen a creator in a while and seek them out, and then I start seeing them for a while. I use UA-cam premium, so UA-cam doesn't make more money based on how much I watch. How that translates to creators, I have no idea. I'm not poor, but not rich in retirement, so not a big target for channel membership or buy me a coffee payments.

I'm thankful you have not pigeon-holed yourself into a 'niche'. I can't even remember why I started on your channel. It was probably because I myself was about to be newly retired but I also enjoyed the minimalist content. We have enough commonalities that I enjoy almost every video. For a non-creator I'm always interested in how YT works and how I can personally help those I watch. Is it just like, comment, subscribe like everyone asks? Are there negative impacts if I skip through an ad or don't finish the video (but make it past the 30 seconds)? Are there benefits to comments (good or bad)? Anyway, these are just my musings. You dont have to answer them (unless it helps the algorithm 😂).

@@akontarini Can't say...top secret. 😎 Not really. 😂 Well I often seem to hit one of Tim's vids when it's about to thumbs-up an interesting number- such as 500 or another three digit 'marvel' : 400. Triple digits of the same number pop up as well: 777 and such. 100 is a fav- just because I complete the first hundred. I like to think of myself as joyfully entertained by many life simplicities. I also love that butterfly feeling in my stomach when I just let go and allow myself to giggle about anything and everything even slightly funny. Now I sound like I'm bragging and I'm not- just like to be honest and clear. Ever hear that song, "I'm Really Weird But I Just Don't Care?" 😂 Don't go looking for it, I just made that up. (There should be one though.) 💖

My mind explodes how people come to YOUR channel and complain about things like camping, decluttering travelling and retirement. I mean seriously,!! These losers must have very sad uneventful lives 🤦🏼‍♀️😔.

I know you didn't talk about this or at least I didn't hear you say it. But, do you use tags when you upload your videos and if so, do you think it helps?

Sometimes I do. I’m told tags are kind of out these days. Keywords in the title and description go further. I’m still working on that as well.

    Thank you for NO MUSIC.
Eventually it’s going to lead to absolute demonetization. Being prepared now? Sure. Makes sense.
Edit: two responses with question marks so I’ll clarify what I mean.
Don’t add music. We don’t need it. My thoughts are building on what he said… when he adds music it can take up to 30 days for him to get an answer about whether the robots at UA-cam will approve the upload.
In the past he knew it was iffy his video would be a copyright infringement and he would allow the monies generated to filter straight thru to the copyright holder.
Occasionally people create an issue where none existed… just trolling.
AND the algorithm is forever changing so there is an issue today that didn’t exist yesterday.
My point is I’m grateful you didn’t add music at all. It’s easier to hear the content. My additional guesstimate is that at some point there will be nothing but restrictions when any music (including original) will anger the “sadists” that take weird pleasure, and enjoy creating havoc for the “fun” of it.
    Acidic & toxic people.
I’m suggesting you take those lemons and stockpile different recipes for lemonade. It’s gonna be such a cluster you’ll quickly tire of the basic variety.

I appreciate the thoughts. I learned very early in this channel that music under my talking isn’t the way to go. Especially for those where English is a second language. However, some videos (like the garden tour and camping video) need music. That’s why I pay for the license. It always gets cleared up. Just a handful get dinged. It’s annoying, but not so much that I plan to stop. :)

I love UA-cam because of all of the interesting channels and topics available, but there isn't total freedom for the creators. Beginning 4 years ago and probably before that, certain channels were taken down or they weren't allowed to post videos for several weeks because they mentioned a treatment for an illness that could save your life, but UA-cam didn't want anyone to know about it there's other topics that Christians talk about and that they want others to know about and they have to use code words. It's a very sad thing when an American company tells people what they can and cannot say about certain topics.😉

I am very new to this whole UA-cam world. Your commentary is as always very helpful. I look at UA-cam as being a supplemental source of income once i get to that point, i will be thrilled when i get to making any money, but sincerely love doing it now, making nothing at all.
