I don't play most of the games you talk about here but you describe it in a middle ground so that I can understand it and find it interesting. Keep doing what you're doing I love it!
I've been playing 3rd Strike for over a decade. Chun-Li is my main, with Akuma, Twelve, Sean, Hugo, and Elena as secondaries. I play Chun-Li as hyper aggressively as possible; most opponents already have her parries memorized, so it's much more interesting to ditch the usual methods and make the opponents desperate. Your video was quite comprehensive, and I'm glad you included things like the double slap into SA2, her corner stomps, and aerial throw. Very few players even know about the aerial throw; I've made a tactic out of jumping in towards shotos, parrying their Shoryukens, and then countering with the aerial throw. That shuts down Shoryuken spammers _very_ quickly. Some other things worth mentioning: you can alter her corner stomps by using wall kicks and doing the input at different times. Also, heavy Spinning Bird Kick is more effective against larger opponent due to hitbox quirks; if they try jumping over, they end up getting caught in the last hit. This is a great way to keep even experienced players off-balance. Also, EX Hazanshu is a tool best utilized as a surprise against players who think they've gotten comfortable with blocking and parrying; it's fast enough to catch inexperienced players off-guard. Also, her crouching strong has a deceptive amount of reach, and is viable as an round-opening attack depending on the opponent. Also, I love super jumping against Urien at the start of matches; it's fast enough to beat his projectile, can counter his knee press, and absolutely no one expects it. Also, the overhead somersault you mention at 19:37 is a way to bait and counter Shoryukens and a few super arts. Also, you can immediately trigger SA2 out of a teched throw, which can be deadly if your opponent is low on health. Anyways, great video. Thanks for making it!

A very unique perspective on what makes Chun-li so strong. Most people just say that she's an average character with a terrifying gimmick (and the tools to always setup into that gimmick), so it's nice to hear that recontextualized into a means of a game-plan as opposed to a reductive assessment. How you put it at 11:24 was a great comparison of character-intent, and I even agree that it's a REALLY COOL way to design a character. That said, I do think that her design is so polarizingly-tuned (if not just a happy-accident) to that game-plan that it makes her an otherwise-unremarkable character without it. I've never really played Chun-li (or faced many online), so you've legitimately shown me moves I've never seen before because of how irrelevant they are to practically play her. I think what makes people think Chun-li is poorly designed (as opposed to just weakly-designed), is how much her balance as a character feels irrelevant outside of her setups. It doesn't feel like she has weaknesses when she can just opt-out of using her downsides (just use her good buttons, not the bad ones), as opposed to some characters who always have to consider their weaknesses (like the fireball-less cast always having to respect their zoning disadvantage in neutral). It also doesn't help that achieving her gameplan is a concern that she more or less has to think about only once or twice in a whole match, since the meter double-stocks at medium length with buttons that fulfill that chore (and even get great damage/zoning results) exceedingly well. In short, she's a just too-good at getting what she wants; though there's an argument to be made that it may be more an indictment at the balance of the rest of the cast than her. I didn't really come out of this video thinking Chun-li deserves the Golden showcase instead of some sort of Gray-Area assessment, but I do still highly appreciate having watched this. It made me rethink this character I had written-off for years. Another great vid, Yellow!
Lighting legs is a really really good move btw, it’s basically free damage in meaty situations or in reset situation when added to her standard mixup. I think you missed out on talking about her air normals and how lethal they really are and how wall jump and wall stomp reset her actions infinitely so that she can parry afterwards and do another action.
fighting game gold on G in sfv? idk of he's your slice of cake but as someone who doesn't even play G his aesthetics and mechanics are so great that it almost makes getting hit by the same 20 second combo over and over again enjoyable
6:08 A great showcase of things that most people would be never able to pull off. It looks impressive but most players would not be able to recreate this during an actual match, heck maybe even in training mode itself. And I am pretty sure that is not because of the amount of parries required but the small yet sudden change in timing / rhythm after the 10th parry, having a little gap followed by a slower sequence of parries. Unless I am not aware of parry sequences such as this being easy money in Third Strike. Even then having the awareness to recognise it in time as well as pulling it off during an actual game are different things altogether.
As a capoeira practitioner, crouching under the type of kicks that Elena uses in her super is actually a correct defense against that kick. Thus, it makes perfect sense it will fly over Chun-Li's head.
I'm confused because every move he showed being crouched looked totally reasonable to my heathen eyes but maybe that's not how street fighter typically works?
I really appreciate the beginner parts to do instead of the hit confirm feeling like there's a crucial part of the character I'm missing out on has often put me off trying to learn fighting games beyond a very casual level:-)
wake up babe new big yellow vid just dropped in all seriousness tho, i love your videos and even though i have never played 90% of the games you talk about it's still really entertaining.
I feel like it's a bit weird to say frame 2 light punch when it's actually active on frame 3. 3s often uses old frame data notation, so 2f startup back then, really means 3f now. (2 frames of start up, active frame 3)
There’s actually a kinda big flaw with chuns sweep. It’s the only sweep you can high parry. Because her other big pokes her hp from that distance this really mitigates a lot of its threat. Edit: Nvm you covered it.
I always try and cultivate my pocket Chun cause I just don’t feel like learning Yun, ever. He’s just a dude with a baseball hat, even if you combined him with his twin brother he’d still only have like 1/4 the personality of any other character except perhaps Ryu.
I thought Chun-Li was considered the best character in the game because of how good she is, how simple her gameplan is and how easy the c.mk hit confirm gets in a higher level of play Who are the top 5 according to you?
Personally I think Yun and Chun are the clear top 2, they're very close but I'd put them on their own in S tier if I did a tier list. I think Ken and Makoto are 3 and 4, but everyone after them but above Hugo imo is extremely close imo. I think 5 would be Yang or Dudley, but it's a close call.
Yeah yun and Chun are tied imo. In a scenario where everyone has perfect execution yun is probably a bit better, but Chun just doesn't have to work nearly as hard. Two bar Chun is probably the scariest thing in the game since that high/low/left/right mixup post super is so easy to do on top of being confirmable.
I like using super art 3. It gives her a lot of meter, mostly for ex SBK and legs as get off me tools, but it also gives her a super that she can use early and often. It's use is circumstantial, but a big fat anti air move actually happens to be what chun lacks for the most part, so i feel like in theory this could actually be a pretty legit strat. Use her ground game and ex moves to force a jump in then catch them with the super
6:34 Chun Li's SA3 is a barrage move. If you're really really close, it carries them into the air with you and the last kick will slam down. It does okay-ish damage, but the first hit comes out on frame 2 or 3, so it's at least a little usable (SA1 and 2 are still better) Otherwise it's just a really bad close range slam with near 0 damage and obvious startup
I enjoyed this very much! Well done, I would love if you went over Oro! I main Oro but I'm still learning this game and its been over a year. Tekken is my main franchise but I love 3S and my husband is a strong Remy main. I like watching 3S more than playing it lol, my Oro is still in training. I personally think Chun is the best in the game; Yun is a close second. My reasoning is that Chun has more health, a better taunt, and I think her SA2 is stronger and eaiser than Yun's Genei Jin SA3. That's just my opinion. Love your content, I'd love more of this series!
A few things I want to add: Although you shouldn't use HP predictably, the punish scenarios against Chun Li if parried aren't as optimal compared to if other characters have their normals parried. This is because she's too far away from the opponent that most punishes are either long range normals that are usually not cancellable, ex fireballs that travel fast or a super that covers distance quickly. Only some characters can more optimally punish it without meter. Cr. MP makes her low profile go even lower. She can duck fireballs, counterpoke her own HP, Dudley's own HP, and even Elena's fastest overhead. It's so low you can use this move to make jumping attacks whiff, which will either make the opponent eat the cr. mp, or go for a throw if it didn't hit. It is really good and covers her anti air weakness once I played with this character a lot more.
Also one thing I just learned recently is that her sweep can also be used as an Anti Air as well. Pretty jank hit box if it's able to smack Akuma out of a demon flip lmao
Pretty cool to see what's going on behind the scenes with top level play. Will definitely have some things to look out for next time I watch a sf3 match.
I know this is a year out, I'd have to imagine my lack of awareness means it's been considered since, but gracious this music track is rhythmically disruptive to my very _breath_ when jumping between cuts. I'm curious if my copy of Online Edition had volume control to allow for music-less capture, but I'm not saucy enough to switch over to turn on the PS3 to check.
I actually really enjoy fighting good Chuns, compared to say, Yun. Bar some post SA2 mix-ups her grounded poke heavy style is pretty honest. Coming up with strategies to counter her is fun.
Since multiple top-tier characters seem to be defined by an amazing super, I'm wondering how the meta would change in a tourney that banned the choice of supers like Yun's S.A.III or Chun's S.A.II Edit: to make things clear, I meant only banning the selection of top-tier's game defining supers. Like Chun would still be okay to select super 1 or 3, just to limit the busted tools of already busted characters. Although a tourney where supers are straight up banned would also be cool
Chun would still be amazing if limited to SA1, I think. Depends on exactly what Supers for other characters would get banned. I would say if you banned SA3 for Ken he'd still be a monster thanks to his EX moves, but SA3 gives him the most EX meter, so it'd mess with that too.
Auto mattock did a tournament where you had to pick your worst super only. Turns out there’s a very good reason Dudley is considered just outside of top tier.
"Elena is a shittier version of Chun Li" But can chun li make every opponent cry and ragequit when you do Super 3 6 times in two games? No? I tought so
Also worth noting is her OTHER kara throw with cl HK. After knockdown oki, you can do an option select whereby you can either: Throw your opponent if they block on wakeup Tech your opponents throw if they throw on wakeup Parry in to cl HK sjc SA2 On oki, get to tip of cl HK range, tap down > HK ~ throw > 2362369 K really fast to cover all eventualities.
Great new video. Could you consider doing a fighting game garbage on Faust’s bone-crushing excitement in Strive. At least in its current state it has a super low and short hitbox, does barely any damage, doesn’t wallbreak and leaves you at midscreen no matter where you use it so it’s basically a waste of meter no matter what. The smallest jump will nullify its use as a reversal.
What a heartwarming note to end on!~ But y'know, having finally watched this...I think maybe Chun-Li _is_ the 3S character for me to play. I like watching the game a great deal, and have nothing but respect for it from the standpoint of it being a historic and competitive hallmark of fighting games, but every time I've tried to pick it up I just...no one in the roster really clicked for me. Initially I would've gone Elena, but her rotoscoped animations just clash way too much with the rest of the game for me to deal. Then I thought I'd go Remy, but I'm...never really thrilled about charge characters; not looking to play Guile 2.0 (probably reductionist of me, but it's what I feel about him). I also tend to have a contrarian streak when it comes to character tiers, which has put Chun-Li entirely out of my consideration for _years_ and years. But then you mentioned boo-boo doody super 3, and I realized, "...Wait a minute, that's my answer! I'd be playing pretty much the top-est tier character, but if I'm using her worst super...well, she at least won't be the most top tier she _could_ be." And that might about be enough of a justification for me.
If Chun's crouching MK had like, 3 more frames of recovery it'd be soooooooo much easier to play vs. It's like obnoxiously safe on whiff, you can like never jump in on it as a punish unless they're not looking at the screen when they press buttons, and she's so short while crouching afterwards that she can parry at the only timing she's available for a move to connect with her. And if she times it well, she can both parry your jump in and tech your empty jump throw, with no time to do like empty land > jab before her throw connects
Have you tried doing 2 hps after sa2? You need to delay it for a bit far hk is really good because of the aerial state and when it hits crouchers (unsure if its counter hit cant remember) you can sa2 Chun got the 2nd best out of the corners because of the wall jump and she can just make you guess after sa2 jump cancel attacks on corner (which always happens because of the amazing corner carry) to block/parry the uoh or block/parry the cr mk for another sa2
So you mentioned that Chun is the 2nd best. So does that mean Gill might be worth talking about in the future? I know he's banned but I really do enjoy these informal videos.
I like how Elena's idle animation is the most obvious rotoscoped animation in the game
I’ve never played this game before so it was kind of jarring to see to be honest. A bit freaky too. Just seems so out of place haha
And Chun-Li's idle looks like it loops by rewinding.
I hated it as a kid. Elena and her stage gave me the same feeling as being chased in a dream

What we learn today?
Chun li is cute
Good video btw.
I didn't know why Chun li was good apart from sa2 until this video.
You didn't have to tell us you were a Chun player, as soon as you said "probably the second best in the game" we knew lol
moves that are impractical but have weird properties are why i like to watch this type of videos
We all love a little jank now and again
you talking like half the people that play her dont just play her for them thighs
That's the main reason I play her in 5.
They don't, they play her because she's broken. Just like with Ken
@@Zeno2806 or they play them both for their thighs.
@@Zeno2806dont lie to urself bro
@@Zeno2806 I bet ur soooooooo fun at parties huh
Lighting legs is a really really good move btw, it’s basically free damage in meaty situations or in reset situation when added to her standard mixup. I think you missed out on talking about her air normals and how lethal they really are and how wall jump and wall stomp reset her actions infinitely so that she can parry afterwards and do another action.
Wall jump is SO whack dude, insane option
No matter how many guides or people who explain how good 3S Chun is, always good to see more videos like this!
fighting game gold on G in sfv? idk of he's your slice of cake but as someone who doesn't even play G his aesthetics and mechanics are so great that it almost makes getting hit by the same 20 second combo over and over again enjoyable
Defo a good chance I'll do this, G has come a long way as a character
This channel is gonna blow up mark my words. You put so much effort into these videos and I really appreciate it. Highly underrated UA-camr
And here I am assuming that Oro was this game’s “golden” character, I mean it’s literally in his name!
From an observational stand point, Chun-Li is shorter, and her crouch is lower. So, her avoiding hits while crouched makes sense.
ArcSys gave Stun Edge the LP Kikoken treatment in Strive
Huh, an overhead that whiffs on crouch. Where have I heard that before?
I really appreciate the beginner parts to do instead of the hit confirm feeling like there's a crucial part of the character I'm missing out on has often put me off trying to learn fighting games beyond a very casual level:-)
wake up babe new big yellow vid just dropped
in all seriousness tho, i love your videos and even though i have never played 90% of the games you talk about it's still really entertaining.
I feel like it's a bit weird to say frame 2 light punch when it's actually active on frame 3. 3s often uses old frame data notation, so 2f startup back then, really means 3f now. (2 frames of start up, active frame 3)
You forgot about the one thing that absolutely ruins Chun Li.
Her stage theme kinda sucks in comparison to the rest of 3rd Strike's OST
And even _then,_ it's still catchy as hell!
It's just really repetitive imo but I still like it
MVC1 Chun theme best iteration.
Her only weakness frfr
I loved playing as her as a kid, she's my most wanted Smash character. It won't happen, but I can dream
There’s actually a kinda big flaw with chuns sweep. It’s the only sweep you can high parry. Because her other big pokes her hp from that distance this really mitigates a lot of its threat.
Edit: Nvm you covered it.
Hey yellow, if youre capable of recording 60fps gameplay its kinda necessary for 3s. Red parry frames tend to not display in 30fps footage.
Oh so that's why the Q looked like a normal parry
It was only a matter of time before this well constructed video came to fruition.
I always try and cultivate my pocket Chun cause I just don’t feel like learning Yun, ever. He’s just a dude with a baseball hat, even if you combined him with his twin brother he’d still only have like 1/4 the personality of any other character except perhaps Ryu.
I literally subscribed today and i already can tell this guy is gonna be one of my favourite youtubers.
Dude you have been on a content creation grind, awesome work I'm so into it
I've followed this game for over 20 years and this video was first time i ever saw her mk command normal...
Everyone gangsta until boss Gill is playable
the bird is the MVP of this video
6:10 Chun-Li’s PTSD intensifies.
I will say, low profile crouches can totally mess with Chun herself. Specifically, Oro can duck EX Bird and rip her wide open with clHP.
I thought Chun-Li was considered the best character in the game because of how good she is, how simple her gameplan is and how easy the c.mk hit confirm gets in a higher level of play
Who are the top 5 according to you?
Love to see more 3S content
Super interesting game even as someone who doesn't play much SF
And shoutouts to that bird
Look at him go 👀
I like using super art 3.
A few things I want to add:
Although you shouldn't use HP predictably, the punish scenarios against Chun Li if parried aren't as optimal compared to if other characters have their normals parried.
Now this is the beginning of something great
You run rarely into chuns?
So thats what its like to be fortunate in this life :D
loved the bird friend at the end
I have been waiting for this my whole life.
I just want you to know that, alongside some of your others, this video has permanently embedded the phrase "Look at he go" in my vocabulary.
Thank you for including the bit with the bird, it made my day better
Twist ending of the century
That stage has all sorts of small quirks, like if you shake the screen enough times the bowl of ramen on the forground table will fall off
Seeing chun li in this game gives me flashbacks to the greatest evo moments in history.
Pretty cool to see what's going on behind the scenes with top level play. Will definitely have some things to look out for next time I watch a sf3 match.
I fucking love that bird.
I learned that Q has an extra frame of block stun :o
18:00 The real reason why this move is top tier is because Chun Li literally bitch slaps you twice.
Also wtf, we’ve got Dee Jay SF4 syndrome
I know this is a year out, I'd have to imagine my lack of awareness means it's been considered since, but gracious this music track is rhythmically disruptive to my very _breath_ when jumping between cuts. I'm curious if my copy of Online Edition had volume control to allow for music-less capture, but I'm not saucy enough to switch over to turn on the PS3 to check.
Luckily there's a way around it now, fightcade training mode lets you turn the music off
I actually really enjoy fighting good Chuns, compared to say, Yun. Bar some post SA2 mix-ups her grounded poke heavy style is pretty honest. Coming up with strategies to counter her is fun.
I like the end bit I'm assuming that was you recording then you got distracted 😂
Chunners is a great stomper with her pokes and then when she does get bar you got to be afraid of any whiff.
How do I approach a woman with a 2f jab
Just EX when she press.
Since multiple top-tier characters seem to be defined by an amazing super, I'm wondering how the meta would change in a tourney that banned the choice of supers like Yun's S.A.III or Chun's S.A.II
Edit: to make things clear, I meant only banning the selection of top-tier's game defining supers. Like Chun would still be okay to select super 1 or 3, just to limit the busted tools of already busted characters. Although a tourney where supers are straight up banned would also be cool
Akuma probably becomes kind of insane? Same with Elena, who can spend on EX instead anyways?
Chun would still be amazing if limited to SA1, I think. Depends on exactly what Supers for other characters would get banned. I would say if you banned SA3 for Ken he'd still be a monster thanks to his EX moves, but SA3 gives him the most EX meter, so it'd mess with that too.
I think Yang would be a monster cause none of his Supers are all that great but EX Slashes is sooooo good
@@BigYellowSilly Ngl I forgot about Yang
Auto mattock did a tournament where you had to pick your worst super only. Turns out there’s a very good reason Dudley is considered just outside of top tier.
"Because... You know, Chun needs her Meter."
*God, that would be an AWESOME 3S fan art.*
Bird advantage
"Elena is a shittier version of Chun Li"
But can chun li make every opponent cry and ragequit when you do Super 3 6 times in two games? No? I tought so
Also worth noting is her OTHER kara throw with cl HK. After knockdown oki, you can do an option select whereby you can either:
Throw your opponent if they block on wakeup
Tech your opponents throw if they throw on wakeup
Parry in to cl HK sjc SA2
On oki, get to tip of cl HK range, tap down > HK ~ throw > 2362369 K really fast to cover all eventualities.
@12:06 exactly how i felt playing Nina with her butterfly loop in Tekken 7 😩 I felt like i shouldnt be playing her if i couldn’t execute it lmao
20:44 indeed
What a heartwarming note to end on!~
But y'know, having finally watched this...I think maybe Chun-Li _is_ the 3S character for me to play.
I'd be playing pretty much the top-est tier character, but if I'm using her worst super...well, she at least won't be the most top tier she _could_ be."
And that might about be enough of a justification for me.
God I love these videos even as the biggest casual around
another great video. love this series you've put together
After watching PikachuAkuma play Chun Li online i gained a love hate relationship for her purely for her taunts. XD
For the all mighty all encompassing all go ruthenium
If Chun's crouching MK had like, 3 more frames of recovery it'd be soooooooo much easier to play vs. It's like obnoxiously safe on whiff, you can like never jump in on it as a punish unless they're not looking at the screen when they press buttons, and she's so short while crouching afterwards that she can parry at the only timing she's available for a move to connect with her. And if she times it well, she can both parry your jump in and tech your empty jump throw, with no time to do like empty land > jab before her throw connects
Keep doing this videos man, they re fun and interesting to watch!
I also love chun only bc how cool and cute she is 😂 i got a chun tattoo 3 weeks ago
Have you tried doing 2 hps after sa2? You need to delay it for a bit
far hk is really good because of the aerial state and when it hits crouchers (unsure if its counter hit cant remember) you can sa2
Chun got the 2nd best out of the corners because of the wall jump and she can just make you guess after sa2 jump cancel attacks on corner (which always happens because of the amazing corner carry) to block/parry the uoh or block/parry the cr mk for another sa2
So you mentioned that Chun is the 2nd best. So does that mean Gill might be worth talking about in the future?
I know he's banned but I really do enjoy these informal videos.
I called Chun 2nd cause personally I think Yun is a tiny bit better, but this is a great idea for a video!
We live for jank, play to win
Chun Li vs Anyone else: Well, this should be easy.
Chun Li vs Ken: Why do I hear parry music?
What are you talkin about? All her buttons are great, strong mix-up, strong spacing, and ontop of that she has a damn near free super.
The good thing about super 3 is that you finally have good ex moves
I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen Kikoken in 3rd Strike
just subbed cuz I love watching all ur vids. can you make a video on Makoto in 3s
