It would be awesome if you could do a video on the fertilizers you use or what to avoid when looking for better alternatives. I don’t have many places locally that offer much in the fertilizer options other than miracle grow. Amazon is great for getting things you usually can’t but you can’t read the ingredients on everything. 😊
Anything I post, is only personal opinion, based on personal experience, but whatever comes naturally from the earth, is generally food for it, afterwards. There are exceptions, such as organic manures and purchased composts containing manures, that have been (unknowingly) contaminated by certain herbicides, which were fed to livestock, excreted by the livestock, processed, packaged, and sold to the public. Seems these herbicides have a “half-life”, people have destroyed their gardens by applying…contaminated purchased compost. Always best to mix our own, and research everything, I do believe.
Make your own tea lots of recipes on you tube, it’s free and easy, I fill a black dustbin with stinging nettles, comfrey a shovel of chicken poop, half a litre of MALE urine and then fill the bucket with water leave it to ferment for at least a week, as you can imagine it stinks so once you have applied spray the hose lightly over we’re you put it that helps. Once a week application and not on seedlings it’s too strong.
Yes! I need to learn more about natural fertilizers! Currently we just use our homemade compost and sometimes add wood ash and eggshells .. plus the occasional purchase of manure. My plants do pretty well but they may produce more for me if I use some additional fertilizers. Definitely interested in learning more about this topic!
Now we have to beware of MANURE if the animals grazed on field sprayed with Grazon or ate hay sprayed with Grazon! Such manure can kill gardens, at least the broadleaf plants. Many videos on it now. smh
It wasn't a negative video, it was an honest and factual one. I learned a few things and it refreshed my brain on ones I'd forgotten. My soul in central Florida could best be described as junky sand. Junky because apparently the people here before us like to throw junk in the yard like broken mirrors, rusty tools, broken jewelry, split bowling balls etc, but mostly it's sand....so getting it to healthy growing soil has been an uphill battle. Thanks for the encouragement and information, sometimes I need a reminder that cheap and fast is drive thru food, not how to grow a healthy garden.
As a newbie to growing veggies and herbs in containers, I would love to please hear more on how to build up the soil instead of tearing it down. Thank you.
I enjoy watching Robbie and Gary gardening easy channel for natural container gardening. She shows how to make container soil with what you have on your property.
Great video and one I will definitely share because I been preaching organic to friends and family for years but I can't seem to get through to them so hoping your video will.
I've always remembered the numbers as "Up, Down and Out", David Tarrant, a Canadian gardener from UBC, years ago. He had the greatest show on Saturday. Great gardeners, you and David, think alike.
I just love your humor! "...and you are pointing your fingers at cow farts..." 😂 As a farm girl I'm glad to say my family used crop rotation to help build soil and was not completely dependent on fertilizers. Also, I always remembered N P K as Up, Down, Around 🤷♀️. I would absolutely be interested in the fertilizers you use!
Last year I composted used coffee grounds, cardboard, kitchen scraps, horse manure, quail and dove bedding. I took some from the compost bin a month ago and topped off two raised beds with the compost it made. My potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes are now shooting up like Jack's magic beanstalk.
Yep. Organics feed the soil. So important! True story: My neighbors recently asked me if I have worms in my yard. I said, "Heck yeah, they love my yard because I feed them only organics." They started using chemicals on their lawn and lost all their worms.
Sad story. I cried at the end.....I LOVE MY BUGS🐌🐞🐜!! WORMS🐛(Caterpillar...), BUTTERFLIES,🦋 BEES🐝, BIRDS🦅. AND TURTLES🐢. Found two this week. Tiny and green😁
@@judigrumm7190 It is very sad for them... but they wanted a perfect green lawn. People used to go to their house with 5 gallon buckets to dig up worms, he said. 😪 I feel the same about the wildlife in my back yard, too! 🦋🐝🐞🐦
That is sad! Although, I have to say that I'm a gardener that is still a little scared of worms, so when I see one I tend to scream. Then I calmly remind myself that they're good for the soil, ha ha. My neighbors must think I'm nuts.
@@CampLJNC I have to say that if your neighbors don't think you're nuts you're not a very good gardener. I'm sure mine think I'm absolutely insane. I tend to talk to almost anything living in my yard including plants.
Much appreciated for the info! I am guilty of using that product and would definitely like to see the alternatives, but I live in Canada and products such as Neptune are not available in Quebec. Would appreciate any other options that I could use if possible. Keep up the great work. You're my go-to guy for info on gardening.
@@The411 I’m also in MB. I use compost and worm castings. I’ve also used Sea Soil and Sea Magic (Kelp). There are more garden centres offering more choices. We may not have Neptunes Harvest but there are similar products in the Evolve line.
I agree with others that a video on building soil would be a nice follow up and I hope you touch on that when you do your container planting because that requires much more feeding than something in ground. One quick thing I learned in a class was if your soil is too sandy add compost and if your soil is too full of clay add compost. Making sure you have a good organic compost is important too. But looking forward to other things you add!
Wow...thank you for this valuable information. YES! YES! YES! Please make a video about safe fertilizers that help build the soil. You are so knowledgeable. Appreciate you!!!
So glad you took the time to educate people about this nasty chemical. I knew it was bad but wasn’t aware of all the information you shared. The info about the dead zone in the Gulf was interesting. Thanks again Brian. I started using Neptune’s Harvest after watching your videos. When planting I use compost manure, blood & bone meal & wood ash.
Thank you so much for sharing how you feel about the blue stuff. I bought some last year and after hearing what you said about it, I will never buy it again.
Yes, please make a video of natural fertilizers and other natural substances that feed the soil, so the soil will feed the plants. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge!!
I really dislike MiracleGro based on what I’ve read about Scotts & try to avoid it as much as possible…I appreciate you doing this awesome video & enlightening me further. Honestly, I would rather hear the straight-up truth, even if it’s negative, than nice fluff. I would also love to see a follow-up video on fertilizers.🙏🏻 🙂
I am sooo glad you did this video. I feel exact same. Miracle Grow is Monsanto a dangerous company with many products. More of you need to speak on this subject. Thanks
I was taught “up, down, all around” when explaining NPK: nitrogen for growth above ground, I.e., leaves and stems; phosphorus for healthy root systems; and potassium to help the entire plant function best and fight disease.
Yes please do. Don't forget some people aren't living in a place where they can make their own compost or only have a small patch to garden in. Thanks for this. I don't use any synthetic chemicals. I am a monarch momma and grow for the pollinators and some of my own food.
This is a great topic area. A tiny quibble @6:15: excess nitrogen may be released as nitrous oxide, N2O, but there is no nitrogen(N) in carbon dioxide, CO2. Also, I don’t think it is only "excess" nitrogen that a plant cannot take up that runs off; even if plants could use more, it is not locked up in microorganisms and can run off. Around 2/3 of nitrogen fertilizer is estimated to not be taken up by plants.
I throw all my kitchen scraps in the compost pile along with tons of leaves, pine needles. Add some Azomite and worm castings. That's what I use for fertilizer, and things are growing well.
Thank You, I haven't purchased my soil yet so this video was perfecting timing, as far as this video being negative I don't think so at all, the reason we ask questions is bc most times we don't know the answers and looking for an educated person to help us.. I prefer to hear the truth so thank you again for this information... :)
This spring shopping for potting soil was discouraging. I finally found some that did not have fertilizer already added, but it wasn't of the best quality.
Thank you very much FOR THIS SELDOM DISCUSSED SUBJECT. I've used MG a VERY LONG TIME AGO for succulents and flowers until I found out it's bad for the environment. Now that I'm growing food, I make my own soil. I'm sure you'll show your subscribers how to do that.
Well said that man!! Not negative at all, just much-needed and well explained info. Have you done a "negative" video on the use of peat moss in our gardens, homesteads etc? If not please do - I see far too many that use the P word :-) Many thanks.from UK
Oh boy! I filled most of my raised beds with miracle groe potting soil. Now what do I need to do? Yes I would love video on fertilizer you use and are safer.
Good on you mate! People need to hear this. I have been gardening organically forever. I did use some of that wonder blue on my orchids though. My bad they all died. Orchids are hard to grow. Can you do a show on how to grow orchids? Have a good growing season. Peace
Great video and I bet the government will use this against people trying to grow to be self sufficient ,again great video everything has a consequence indeed seen or unseen
I wouldn't say it's been a negative video. You said what needed to be said, and that's a good thing. It just might not sound positive to some people because it's not what they wanted to hear.
I've been using organic fertilizers too the past 4 years or more. I will also add that the past several years, I have avoided buying MG bagged potting soils because of the price, BUT, last fall I bought 1 bag. I have to say that the stuff is just BAD. It is basically (my observation and opinion) all peat moss and perlite. I tried to use it to repot a plant in my greenhouse a month or 2 ago, and I had to mix it with a different potting soil with more organic matter in it. As it was straight from the bag, it was very dry and seemed like it was just peat moss and some perlite, hard to moisten and just "blah". Maybe adding other soils to it with organic matter in it can salvage it, if you already have it, but, don't buy it on purpose in MY opinion. I have used MG FERTS in potted plants fert regimines before, BUT, I'd like to use only organics even in pots. These potted plants are NOT annuals, they are long lived plants. Maybe if I buy an annual plant or 2, I can use up that MG blue stuff since annuals are not going to live beyond the current growing year. My neighbor has been using saltly chem ferts for eons, and always has the best and biggest tomatoes. But, he does use those 'dusts" that fend off pests too. I do wonder how he keeps getting those nice HUGE tomatoes every year with the chem ferts he keeps using. Even IF my tomatoes don't get big, I am not going to use chem ferts. Maybe it is in the pruning of the plants determining the size of the fruits? I suck at pruning tomatoes right. Last year I may have overpruned my tomatoes. Previous years, I had sprawling tomato plants with lots of tomatoes, but, the vines had been just all over the ground and messy. Sorry, I'm guessing some of this stuff is for a whole other video. But, I will keep on doing the organic ferts and will only use stuff like "Milky spore" which is specifically going to affect grubs that become Japanese Beetles, and BT that only affects tent catapillars. Last year I had infestations of both.
😬I just purchased a pallet of MG organic raised bed soil to fill my new raised beds. I live where access to soils and even soilless planting medium is lacking. I cant imagine ordering all the ingredients online for Mels mix for my 8 new raised beds but I feel compelled. A must watch about this very topic “Kiss the Ground” Netflix
Well you answered my question as to why my flowers in front of my house started dying off almost like they started burning all of a sudden.... applied some to try to give them a boost but it did the opposite....
New subscriber as of today and YES I want the answer to better and organic fertilizer options. I just fed the wonder blue a few days ago to my transplants, but would like a healthier option now that I've watched this video.
I would love to see a video on what to look for when choosing an organic fertilizer. Up here in Canada we are unable to get the same brands as you, however if I know what to look for when choosing fertilizers for my garden, that would be very helpful. And thanks Brian for all you content 😁
just don't get 'biosolids'. That is human sewage. Also find a farmer or friend with animals and you can maybe get a couple of buckets of manure from him.
This was a disturbing eye opener. Thank you for so clearly and succinctly describing the destructive path of detailed & broader outcomes that eventuates from using synthetic fertilizers. In light of its effect on our waterways & water tables, how would you suggest we dispose of the blue crystals we have on hand?? I found a 2 lb. box of it on sale a month ago, but now do not want to use it!! If anyone has ideas about safe disposal, I’d appreciate it, thanks!!
A video on grass fed gardens would be appreciated. I’ve been trialing fresh cut grass as mulch in one of my beds with amazing success. Cant fin too much in the old interwebs about it so just going off what I have been told.
I am more on team sometimes using it. I mix in my own compost and keep a few good piles to revitalize potting and bed mixes, but if a plant is growing slower than the rest of the seeds or seems to be unhealthy i hit it with a few oz of the blue stuff assuming i did not mix the sol well enough so the extra root burst might help it catch up or not die before it reaches the good stuff. works pretty well since compost and the occasional shot of blue on individual plants is all the fertilizer I use.
I used Wonder Blue for a couple months before I saw what it was doing to the soil. It became very crusty and I could see salt stains on the top. It also wasn't absorbing water that well. I switched to a dry organic fertilizer that I only need to apply twice per season and I can already see a difference! My tomatoes did great this year, giving me lots of fruit instead of leaves. Little mushrooms are popping up here and there. I'm definitely sticking to organic now.
Brian thank you for your videos, very informative, very helpful. I hope that you can help me, I'm leaving in North Alabama and I grow in conteiners but my soil got infested with thrips and I don't want to use quimicos as a pesticide, please help. Thanks again.
INTERESTING - I KNEW an agriculture guy - a RESEARCHER and COLLEGE INSTRUCTOR - who once mentioned to me that he did not know why MIRCLE GROW was so popular. According to him the biggest problem is that MG leaves behind salt - lots of salt. So I still use it but in very small amounts and for very specific reasons. Like transplanting or when I set out plants that I have started inside and am not transplanting to the brutal outdoors.
@next level gardening I'm new to making my own fertilizer and have been thinking about things I can fairly easily renew with minimal space and money. I've heard people using fish products, aquarium water, etc and started thinking. Would brine shrimp be an appropriate food for gardening? I was considering setting up a small hatching area, freezing the brine shrimp into cubes, and using those cubes to add to a liquid fertilizer. I know this is kind of an off the wall question. I looked for information about brine shrimp and gardening and found nothing except info on how to use it as fish food. I thought it may be a good idea to ask someone who understands the chemistry. Thanks so much!
Yeah, I’ve been using it. Luckily, I’m a fairly new gardener, so hopefully haven’t had the time to totally bugger up my soil. So, how about telling us now what we should use?
Hi,I have been watching your show for the past month now and really enjoy you and your way of providing information and standing behind your views,it’s great. Now I have A very important question,at least to me it is. I live in Alberta, Canada,I’m not sure where in the US. You are located.Which is the reason I need an answer,is there a difference when in your case hotter temperatures and mine being cooler ,when it comes to how we garden as to be using different types of fertilizer, amendment, etc, etc, etc….I’m sure hoping not.I love your technology and I’m by no means a new gardener.I’m a 78 year old senior lady with many years of gardening left in me. It would sure be one topic worth mentioning to your many gardening who may have wondered the same thing, keep up the great work, and keep digging…PHYLLIS
It is said you should allow a 4 year weaning off period if your farm or garden is addicted to synthetic fertilisers. This is to allow the soil microbiology to recover. Abrupt withdrawal will result in element deficit until the new natural system comes online.
I would love to see a video with tips to build natural soil
Not hard to do
Feed the soil
And this soil will feed you
I buried few pots I use to feed the worms. Then have another pot in that one with natural deterrent plants to protect the in ground plants. My results feed me and so many other people
SOIL: Biochar; water with rain water as much as possible; keep soil covered year round as much as possible; use foliar sprays to strengthe plant and foster photosynthesis, which sends excess sugars into the soil biology; use cover crop mixes of 8+ combined plants at once vs a few.

Thanks for your honesty on that.
Yes please make video on make my own fertilizer for my garden
Well you answered my question as to why my flowers in front of my house started dying off almost like they started burning all of a sudden.... applied some to try to give them a boost but it did the opposite....
New subscriber as of today and YES I want the answer to better and organic fertilizer options. I just fed the wonder blue a few days ago to my transplants, but would like a healthier option now that I've watched this video.
Welcome!
One of the Best Videos Ever!
Thank you!
Thank you so much for speaking out. This confirms what I suspect :( I will share this!
Thank You!! Yes let us know !!!
I use Miracle Gro Performance Organic Fruit & Veg which has an NPK of 4-1.5-4 and it’s actually really good 👍🏻 I highly recommend it
Is this the liquid one? I just got it and confused about how to use it. The instructions say 1/2 capful /litre but is this per plant? It doesn't say!
Yes, I want video 2!
Need you videos about natural fertilizer ! Please
I'm definitely sticking to organic now.
hmmmm
Yes, ASAP.. thanks !!!
Yes please i sure could use your help. Thank you
Brian thank you for your videos, very informative, very helpful.
Please tell us what you use and the proportions, thank you
Yeah, I’ve been using it.
YES YES YES, FOLLOW UP PLEASE. Blessings, julie
It is said you should allow a 4 year weaning off period if your farm or garden is addicted to synthetic fertilisers. This is to allow the soil microbiology to recover. Abrupt withdrawal will result in element deficit until the new natural system comes online.
Thank you for speaking out the truth.
Would like to see what you use for fertilizer in your garden.
I just ordered a box of crystal blue😉😉. I will be returning it as soon as it arrives
