People don't realize a few things about Russ. After going to MIT and graduating he was he was instructor at Guitar Institute for 7 years or so. Second, he played with one of the best shredders of all time, Paul Gilbert. The guy is an awesome and skilled player. He acts like a goof for Panther but the man can play.
+Banana nope, no bull. He's a lot better than he makes himself out to be not to mention he's pretty cool to talk to. I went to a clinic he was doing years back.
I had the joy of being taught by Russ a few times when i was at the G.I.T way back in '92. He was an awesome player back then and a thoroughly nice bloke with a great sense of humour. Great to see him doing his thing and blowing people away! Keep it up Parish you nutter!!
4:53 Walk - Pantera 5:02 Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple 5:22 Breaking the Law - Judas Priest 5:33 Too Fast For Love - Motley Crue 5:47 The Trooper - Iron Maiden 6:00 Trilogy Suite Op. 5 - Yngwie Malmsteen 6:11 Master of Puppets - Metallica 6:32 Sweet Child 'O Mine - Guns 'n Roses 6:49 Iron Man - Black Sabbath 7:15 Paranoid - Black Sabbath 7:22 Do Re Mi - The Sound of Music
Russ is a legit bad mofo. I love Steel Panther but it's unfortunate he never got the attention he deserved. It's interesting too because he played with some great acts but nobody knew who this dude was until SP.
Hey khower! Thanks! Actually, I Wiki'd them and found all their pics and bios without the SP costumes. They're all really great musicians and I hope to get to see them play someday! That will be a blast!!! Rock ON! ~JA~
I was a GIT student back in the early 90's....Russ was a teacher at the time. I'll never forget his performance with "Electric Fence" with Paul Gilbert and Jeff Martin. His work with Rob Halford's "Fight" was top-drawer. Russ, thanks for inviting me to your open counceling....bummer man! It was standing room only! Lates....
Seen this band twice in the UK and each time he's taken my head clean off! He is super talented and they are one hell of an outfit. Can't wait for the 3rd album! \m/
Watch his solo on the Steel Panther video All To Death But Metal. You can also hear Russ and Paul Gilbert trade solos on the Jeff Martin CD "The Fool" on the song Eat My Money.
They've been around probably 10 years. They were originally Danger Kitty from the Discover Card commercial. Then they were Metal Shop for years. When they left their manager, they changed to Metal Skool. Another manager change, and finally the name Steel Panther. Russ has been in Electric Fence with Paul Gilbert, FIGHT with Rob Halford and was "Eddie" in the Atomic Punks (with Ralph) for years. Ralph is in the movie Rock Star briefly, auditioning in the booth when Mark Walberg arrives.
Amazing ability to recreate styles: VH, Gary Moore, RR, Yngwie, George Lynch, Priest, Maiden, Metallica, Purple, Sabbath, and others. The Fight "War of Words" video also contains a few highlights of the killer original style Russ brought forth in the early '90s. Great improvisational skill.
I think I hear some early Mike Varney submission riffs...somewhere in there...Russ KICKS A-S-S....really just a great great player...a showman's show MAN ! Please see him actually live and lovin' what he doz...
Russ is a legit world class guitar player. He was friends and bandmates with another of the best players in the world Paul Gilbert and has a legit degree on music. The guy is VERY VERY good.
Paul is super gracious in showing what he knows....doesn't keep it a secret. I played chess with him and (he was playing an acoustic while playing chess) he discovered a new shape between 2 places on the neck...he literally went..awesome. I thought he just saw a checkmate..lol...but he immediately showed me the shape...not that I could play it....but he showed it right then. So without bugging either Russ or Paul..I have no doubt it was a guitar playing/teaching extravaganza at their house.
And they have had stage names and wigs since the start...they had different names as Metal Shop...Michael Diamond, Ratchet (Rikki), Ginger and Armando Lbs. The CD Hole Patrol came out in 2003.
Ralph is the same...that's his hair. The others wear wigs. Just Google images for Russ Parrish, Travis Haley and Darren Leader. There's pictures all over with their short hair...and you can find pictures of Russ Parrish in FIGHT with Rob Halford...he had REALLY LONG hair then.
Yup. Obviously FIGHT in the early 90's and more recently Thornbirds. You can find them on Amazon. They are like edgey Goo goo dolls. Russ writes and sings all the songs.
Hole Patrol is totally out of print....I just looked, and there are 9 tracks. Stripper Girl and Fat Girl were redone on the Steel Panther Feel The Steel. You can probably find all 9 here on UA-cam.
before gilbert became his teacher he demonstrated a rare musical gift besides having a lot of determination as he noted in a guitar player's "spotlight" column
"This guy is a rip" Of course! The band is a funny rip of the 80s and he's having fun demonstrating how able he's to play the Heroes: Van Halen, Vai, Metallica, Judas, G'n'R, Pantera, Yngwie and so on! Check on the cd Steel Panther "Feel The Steel" or Halford's band "Fight" and "Electric Fence" and you'll see what this guy's capable of: no rips, just him! Incredible
Yeah..he did. Paul was an instructor at GIT at the time....and Russ lived with Paul. Doesn't get much closer of a teacher student relationship than roommates.
Love that he sounds like every other kid at a local Guitar Center...except he actually CAN play...what chops....Thornbirds ROCK !...What type of rig does he use ? Their tech rider just mentions MARSHALL...
No...that's part of the "act". Russ played with Jeff Martin (Racer X) in the very late 80's when he was like 19 in the band Big Dog or Bad Dog...I forget. LOL. In the late 90's and early 2000's, Russ had his own band..The Ducks, which became The Thornbirds. It's a GREAT CD...Look for the UA-cam video Thornbirds Hold On To Jane...it's fantastic song...Russ sings...Stix (Darren) plays drums.
So does anyone have any videos or pics of what the guys in Steel Panther look like in 'real' life? Do they all have crew cuts or what? And are the tatts those see through sleeve shirts you can buy at Harley D stores?
Pure Precision Player...Russ is a HAM on stage...but a great Fking Player...seriously a true OWNER of the INSTRUMENT....the picking precision is amazing...Gilbert taught...ya, but I'm sure Paul thought..WOW this dude has IT...you either got IT, or not..and RUSS does....
I don't think Russ took lessons from Paul Gilbert. I know they both studied at GIT around the same time. Paul may have been a little ahead of Russ. But I don't think he actually too lessons from him per se. They jammed together at GIT along with other musicians. That's how it goes there. You get to jam with a lot of different people. They used to hang out and formed the Electric Fence and would trade guitar and bass duties.
Really? I didn't know they lived together. Yeah man, can you imagine being roommates with Paul freakin' Gilbert?! When we would be just hangin out in the living room or whatever, you know damn well that I'd be studying everything he did, picking up tips here and there. Did you see the guitar tuning thing on Pauls Terrifying Guitar Trip? That's Russ on bass. Funny, but cool stuff! Russ is definitely a guitar god in my humble opinion. Technical but tasty licks. His rhythm is as good as his leads.
"Love that he sounds like every other kid at a local Guitar Center...except he actually CAN play...what chops....Thornbirds ROCK !...What type of rig does he use ? Their tech rider just mentions MARSHALL..." It looks like he's using a Peavey XXX or JSX in the beginning to me.
where did you get that information? they played together in Electric Fence... maybe influenced him, but i woudlnt say for sure Paul Gilbert taught him.... i would like to find that source of information that Paul or Satchel says its true... everyone keeps saying that, but i dont think its real.
this guy is a total monster, i dont even think we see a fraction of what hes capable of
People don't realize a few things about Russ. After going to MIT and graduating he was he was instructor at Guitar Institute for 7 years or so. Second, he played with one of the best shredders of all time, Paul Gilbert. The guy is an awesome and skilled player. He acts like a goof for Panther but the man can play.
+hvymtl69 MIT? are you joking bro?
+Banana nope, no bull. He's a lot better than he makes himself out to be not to mention he's pretty cool to talk to. I went to a clinic he was doing years back.
+Banana He's not joking. Russ was Paul Gilbert's student. Then became an instructor. He was the guitarist in FIGHT with Rob Halford and Scott Travis.
+hvymtl69 He went to GIT.
MIT =/= GIT.
Mr. Russ Parrish ( Satchel) is absolutely one of rocks most solid guitarists! He can play anything!!!
I had the joy of being taught by Russ a few times when i was at the G.I.T way back in '92. He was an awesome player back then and a thoroughly nice bloke with a great sense of humour. Great to see him doing his thing and blowing people away! Keep it up Parish you nutter!!
4:53 Walk - Pantera
5:02 Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
5:22 Breaking the Law - Judas Priest
5:33 Too Fast For Love - Motley Crue
5:47 The Trooper - Iron Maiden
6:00 Trilogy Suite Op. 5 - Yngwie Malmsteen
6:11 Master of Puppets - Metallica
6:32 Sweet Child 'O Mine - Guns 'n Roses
6:49 Iron Man - Black Sabbath
7:15 Paranoid - Black Sabbath
7:22 Do Re Mi - The Sound of Music
In my opinion, he is one of the best, probably not one of the most innovative, but a fantastic guitar player.
Playing an ESP Kamikaze, must have been before he became a Kramer endorser
Russ is a legit bad mofo. I love Steel Panther but it's unfortunate he never got the attention he deserved. It's interesting too because he played with some great acts but nobody knew who this dude was until SP.
Holy fuck, that might be the best most enjoyable guitar tone I've heard for a free style solo like this
Ironically, the singer Ralph was in the movie Rock Star. You can see Ralph singing and strutting out when Mark and Jennifer arrive.
3.30 - 4.30 that is the shit that i live for right there.
1:37. His tremolo picking literally melted my face off. That is the fast tremolo picking anyone has ever done.. ever.
Hey khower! Thanks! Actually, I Wiki'd them and found all their pics and bios without the SP costumes. They're all really great musicians and I hope to get to see them play someday! That will be a blast!!! Rock ON! ~JA~

What a killer take on a solo. Mash up a bunch of legendary licks and riffs and make them Satchel-esque. NICE WORK Russ.
anyone else notice he's using the George Lynch ESP? This must be before his contract with Kramer. Sick solo \m/
Seen this band twice in the UK and each time he's taken my head clean off! He is super talented and they are one hell of an outfit. Can't wait for the 3rd album! \m/
Guy is a a wolf in sheep's clothing. Insanely skilled guitar player and beyond. He played for Halford back in the day.
Watch his solo on the Steel Panther video All To Death But Metal.
You can also hear Russ and Paul Gilbert trade solos on the Jeff Martin CD "The Fool" on the song Eat My Money.
He learned from Paul Gilbert and was inspired by Eddie Van Halen. That's a great combination...lol
That was the Electric Fence. Jeff Martin (Racer X) is on drums. Paul gave us some old videos to submit, they are on here.
They've been around probably 10 years. They were originally Danger Kitty from the Discover Card commercial. Then they were Metal Shop for years. When they left their manager, they changed to Metal Skool. Another manager change, and finally the name Steel Panther. Russ has been in Electric Fence with Paul Gilbert, FIGHT with Rob Halford and was "Eddie" in the Atomic Punks (with Ralph) for years. that is the single most badass guitarist i have ever seen
this is probably one of the best live guitar/improvise players i have ever heard/seen
that's an ESP GL Kamikaze guitar (George Lynch signature), that's awesome...this guy rocks
There's lots of different stuff in there, mixed in with his own.... Mind blisteringly good!
Yep. Russ played bass mostly in Electric Fence. There are some Electric Fence vids on the Racer X site.
totally have a man crush on russ parrish, he really encompasses everything i love about guitar
Why would anyone ever think he sucks?
I think I hear some early Mike Varney submission riffs...somewhere in there...Russ KICKS A-S-S....really just a great great player...a showman's show MAN ! Please see him actually live and lovin' what he doz...
Russ is a legit world class guitar player. He was friends and bandmates with another of the best players in the world Paul Gilbert and has a legit degree on music. The guy is VERY VERY good.
Okay... First I thought "man hes playing some van halen blaah" Then i was like "whut the fuck is this guy doin hes shredding like a hell"
You can see Russ in the FUSE Show, 10 Great Things We love about Hair Metal.
Love that dude.
This is the best thing I've ever seen.
I LOVE RUSS PARRISH (satchel)
i love the satchel eruption !!!!
and i love steel panther!
Ralph is the same...that's his hair. The others wear wigs. Just Google images for Russ Parrish, Travis Haley and Darren Leader. There's pictures all over with their short hair...and you can find pictures of Russ Parrish in FIGHT with Rob Halford...he had REALLY LONG hair then.
amazing!!
He learned from Paul Gilbert....and it shows.
Yup. Obviously FIGHT in the early 90's and more recently Thornbirds. You can find them on Amazon. They are like edgey Goo goo dolls. Russ writes and sings all the songs.
i like the added flight of the bumble bee
@alphadelta227529 Thanks! I'm up to speed on who they all are now and the background on them. :-) ~JA~
Dude absolutely rips...and makes fun of it at the same time....Saw him with FIGHT...shredded.
Not sure why everyone thinks lessons with Paul Gilbert is pertinent. I had lessons with Russ 20 years ago and I still suck.
brian carroll and russ are both good .
No doubt, I took lessons from a G.I.T. grad and I still suck too lol
@@adamnorris9200 they were very good before, gilbert just made them even better
This guy is Sick!
Actually, Russ played guitar on a good few songs, too. He really is awesome.
i saw this live, it was pretty fucking awesome.
Hole Patrol is totally out of print....I just looked, and there are 9 tracks. Stripper Girl and Fat Girl were redone on the Steel Panther Feel The Steel. You can probably find all 9 here on UA-cam.
@chrook
ROFL..that's funny stuff. They all wear wigs, except for Ralph.
Russ is a beast.
Steel Panther came out late 1999, early 2000. They came out as Metal Skool I think. And then had multiple name changes since Metal Skool.
Malmsteen!!!
before gilbert became his teacher he demonstrated a rare musical gift besides having a lot of determination as he noted in a guitar player's "spotlight" column
Russ's double picking at 1:37 is not human. fucking amazing
Mom! That man melted my face!
Here's the user name the Electric Fence videos from Paul were uploaded under:
racerxsurgeon
Even Bruce Bouillet and Russ crossed paths briefly at GIT.
"This guy is a rip" Of course! Russ is THE FUCKING man! period
Yeah..he did. Paul was an instructor at GIT at the time....and Russ lived with Paul. Doesn't get much closer of a teacher student relationship than roommates.

He was also in War and Peace with bassist Jeff Pilson Ex(Dokken) the band after the band Dokken broke up
totally freakingly amazingly awesome! don't mind if it's a grammar mistake, i'm french, but that guy rocks!
So does anyone have any videos or pics of what the guys in Steel Panther look like in 'real' life? Do they all have crew cuts or what? And are the tatts those see through sleeve shirts you can buy at Harley D stores?
Yup....Russ had long black hair...you can see him in the video Nailed To The Gun.
Sounds like a remake of Nuno's 'bumblebee crash landing'
Pure Precision Player...Russ is a HAM on stage...but a great Fking Player...seriously a true OWNER of the INSTRUMENT....the picking precision is amazing...Gilbert taught...ya, but I'm sure Paul thought..WOW this dude has IT...you either got IT, or not..and RUSS does....
Evh fan, like ya even more now.
Nevermind, I found it....It's Too Fast For Love by Motley Crue.
I could have done without "the Sound of Music" part in their at the end. But it was a great solo overall.
Well..Paul Gilbert was his teacher, so it figures.
God Damn
And what was that rant about "Gift to mankind and UA-cam?"
I love the hair!! Im sorry but out of them all Satchel and Lexxi are the best :D
0:53 - 1:00 is pure precision picking technique...
I don't think Russ took lessons from Paul Gilbert. I know they both studied at GIT around the same time. Paul may have been a little ahead of Russ. @khower Thanks
Does anyone realize that it's a parody of Eruption? lol Satchel freaking rocks.
FYI I meant he rips as in he shreds, is a great player, etc. Not rips off
@6:00 sick fucking run!!!
FUCKIN A!
Walk, by Pantera.
"Love that he sounds like every other kid at a local Guitar Center...except he actually CAN play...what chops....Thornbirds ROCK !...What type of rig does he use ? Their tech rider just mentions MARSHALL..."
It looks like he's using a Peavey XXX or JSX in the beginning to me.

they played together in Electric Fence... maybe influenced him, but i woudlnt say for sure Paul Gilbert taught him.... i would like to find that source of information that Paul or Satchel says its true... everyone keeps saying that, but i dont think its real.
I managed 5 1/2 minutes of this until my head exploded. Do I win a prize?
