    I can remember in 1982, I was 7 years old and my parents bought a new stereo. Each piece, turntable, double tape deck, 2 Bose pedestal speakers with walnut wood and black stands, was a separate purchase. I remember my mom showing me 3 $1000 bills that they were going to buy it with. They blew through 3 receivers bcz the Bose speakers were SO BADASS, they shook our house. The Carver receiver was the 4th and ONLY one that could handle the loudness. I'll NEVER forget how awesome they were. Even as a 7 yr old girl.

    I have an old Carver system that I purchased back in 1989 I believe. A CT17 Preamp and a TFM25 two of them to get 600 watts per channel. I have never had to fix either one of them. When I need to have the caps changed I will do it myself. I like the fact that they have never needed to be fixed and I know the history of them as I am the original owner. I love Carver stereo systems. My brother has around 6 or 7 of those receivers that you just fixed. All of them may need to be repaired. I offered to start fixing them, but he just said not now. He is sitting on some nice vintage gear that may never see the light of day again.

    I still have this receiver and it works sometimes. wish i knew where to get it looked at. this thing drove the old JBL 100's to magnificent levels. 1812 overture royal Canadian cannons literally ripped the voice coils out of the speakers.

    Thanks for another great video Tony. It takes me back to the early 90's repairing Carver Amps on a daily basis for the UK distributor. The pulsing sounds from the power transformer will live with me forever lol!

    Hey Tony, I've been watching your videos for a while now, I really do appreciate the teaching on all the different types of HI-FI gear, I have been getting back into electronics since about 4 or five years now. I was into it back on the 80s and 90s, I used to service VCR s some back in the day, mostly changing rubber tires and some parts and do alignment. Stereos, radios and amps were always my favorite!! I knew some about semiconductors but very little of how they actually operate. As I'm working on HDTVs I'm learning a little as I go, SMDs are a pain, mostly I have to change the whole power supply or if I'm lucky just the bulging electrolytic capacitors... or replace the t-con or module board... only if they're still available for some of these tv''s. Lol. MOSFETS are some of the things I've just learned about a while back, using your finger to discharge the GATE to DRAIN for instance in testing them with a DMM in diode mode. Anyway love your videos. I really learn from you. You have a gift in what I love the most. Electronics is my passion. I've loved it since I was a kid. Which later in my future, life happened and I ended up working in construction and home exteriors.
    Have a good day God bless.

    First time seeing the inside of this Carver Receiver and it the layout and build quality looks quite good. A friend of mine had one of these connected to a big pair of floor standing Infinity speakers and the setup sounded really good.

    I owned a Carver AVR 100 receiver and I loved it and the sound it created. Rated at 150 watts/ channel ans 50 watts/ channel surround. With sonic Holography.

    Keep doing what You do, Tony. Your the best at what U do. I'm not sure just why their are a few smart-asses posting smart-add post here? But do know I have learned a great deal from your youtube witnessed repair/restoration work and remain amazed at your knowledge and kindness. In my opinion, your the best on youtube in the thre: Repair, Resoration and even Wood Housing refinishing or remake. Sincerely.

    There is always something intriguing in most Carver gear but I'm not sure I can go through a 4 part series on this receiver. For me, the asymmetric charge coupled FM detector circuit (for multipath noise reduction) is the most interesting part - possibly the magnetic field power supply too (an opportunity to find out what that actually is).

    I had a Carver MXR-130 that looked similar to this. One day I had pressed a preset button or something on the side of the display panel. The entire display had fallen back into the unit. I'd opened it.. discovered it was held in place by double-sided tape. No screws no brackets.. nothing but double-sided tape.

    I accidently shorted the probe checking the high voltage on a Carver PM1200. Went in protection mode and makes a clicking sound. Is this thing toast? I would appreciate a short response. Love your repair videos on vintage audio!

    It'd be much safer if you plugged the receiver into an isolation transformer.

    • @xraytonyb
      @xraytonyb  6 років тому +2

      The black and yellow outlet strip is fed by a large isolation transformer that is located on the floor next to the bench. All devices under test are connected to it. Thanks for watching!

    I bought one of these mxr-200's , used , on Craigslist , many years ago , it worked fine when I was at the seller's place . When I got home and hooked it up , it only worked about 5 minutes , before it quit working on one side . The seller said I must have dropped it . I ended up throwing it away , and kick myself when I think about it . During the 5 minutes , I had it hooked up to Advent Legacys that were 12 ft high in the corners of my 35ft x 60ft x 13ft high ceiling shop . The power was incredible , I was amazed , and I was replacing a 100 watt per channel reciever , WOW , what a difference in power ! I know a good audio repair guy now , but I wish I knew him then . I am going to find me one of these again , but not sure what a fair price is these days ? Does anyone know a fair price in 2023 ?

      I wouldn't go more than 100 these days. It's a great sounding amp, and I love them but if it needs repair, you're going to sink more than that into it.

      By chance, did you ground the power cord? Carvers are internally grounded, and should never be grounded at the wall or power strip, apparently. If you did, I bet that's what happened to your receiver...

    1st time viewer... how are you able to display 200+w on your scope? 20x probe? DIY voltage divider solution of some sort? Point me to a previous video if you’ve discussed before. Thanks for your efforts! Nice video.

      Tony is driving an 8ohm load and scoping the voltage of the waveform. Voltage squared divided by ohms = power.

    When a cord is cut like that, that means it was likely stolen. It's quicker to cut the cords rather than trying to pull it through whatever nooks it's fed through.

    What is the difference between a Magnetic field and a "normal" transformer?

    • @jonka1
      @jonka1 5 років тому

      I believe the transformer is standard. The primary is fed through a control circuit which varies the amount of line power admitted to it. I think the term "Magnetic Field" could be a marketing term designed to encourage customers to buy this unit rather than any other. @12:47 Tony is showing how the line input is being controlled similar to pulse-width modulation, (pwm).

    Tony, any thoughts on Carver using the circuit breaker in the house power being used as the reserve for the power supply? When I worked in retail, we used to get Carver power amps to test circuit breakers because they never had sufficient capacitors to supply power. They were the joke of the industry. The rap was, that they used the circuit breaker as the capacitors for the power supply unlike real amplifiers.
