How do cranes get all the way up there?

Cranes are tall but skyscrapers are taller. How does that work?

Ok, so presumably there is a long vertical shaft that the first crane occupies when the building is built. What happens to this "space" once the crane is dismantled? Does it become the building's elevator shaft?
