I have a boxed copy of Hero's Quest, as well as Quest for Glory II, and III. I bought them as a gift for my dad, actually (I installed them in DOSBox on a thumbdrive alongside the remaining games from the GOG pack, and the ADG interactive VGA remake of II) but reinherited them when he died.
1:40 Protip for anyone thinking about playing this (which you should because it's a great series): Choose Thief, then put your points into magic as well as other stats which start at 0. Thief is the only class who can put points into *everything* and therefore become a multipurpose spellsword rogue. The beginning of the game will be slower because you have to do more grinding but eventually you'll have a superior build that will last you through the first 2 or 3 games. But eventually you'll want to switch classes to Paladin, in QFG3 or 4.
I got QfG2 and 4 as a kid, and became a big fan of the series. I love Sierra adventure games, and this was one that I felt like I could make progress in. The narrative, world building, and puzzles were my favorite out of all the Sierra games. Each QfG felt like an actual place to visit rather than screens of various puzzles to solve, and solutions to puzzles were often out there as hints or things you could ask other people, and puzzles even had multiple solutions both for classes and in general. Like you don't even have to take the secret entrance to the Brigand Hideout, you can barge right in the front door if you're tough enough to break the barricade! Nowadays, looking back at stat grinding wasn't great, but as a kid meandering through the game, it did give a sense of progression as something to do while trying to figure out the next step of progress for the story. End a day of adventuring with climbing the tree, never know if you'll need more of that climbing stat later!
Totally agreed! Yeah, I thought about reloading my character and barging in through the front door to see if I could make it through lol. But absolutely these games just feel like you're exploring a real place. The Space Quest games gave me the same feeling... it's just a cool universe you wanna hang around in and linger for awhile.
I've got a copy of Sierra's Hero's Quest. It's by far my favorite PC game of all time, and I play through it at least once a year. Have I ever seen the original "in the wild" - well ... nope ... because I was far too young when the game came out. But this was the game that taught me English (reading and writing), with help from my Dad. It was also the first Sierra game that I ever completed, and it holds a very very special place in my heart even today.
I bought a copy of Hero's Quest off a friend just before the name change was announced. I still have the software (5.25 floppies :p ) box was non existent when I bought it save the front cover with the dragon.
Absolutely loved this series! By the way, one way to avoid some of the "grinding" to get your skills up is to use the other character type's solution to the puzzle: say you need the healer's ring but your throwing is too low. You still can use the climbing method or the magic fetch method! Personally I always turned the game speed way up and just clicked away. Space bar repeats your last command so just hit "space-enter-enter" repeatedly until you have to rest or run out of rocks or whatever.
Yeah turning the speed up helps a ton for that. That's what I ended up doing when I streamed this live on my side channel.... it turned into a running joke on the stream, sitting there clicking for like 30 minutes lol.
Had this as a kid with the Hero's Quest branding. Ours was a bootleg copy, but I did see the original when we borrowed it originally from my dad's buddy who was big into computer games. I'd always thought the board game ripped off the computer game until probably 10 years later.
I grew up playing the QFG series. Now that I’m playing Elder Scrolls, I was amazed and how many things reminded me of QFG! So the more I sneak, the more my stealth increases. Hmm
Hero's quest was the way I played and how I remember the game. I ALSO played and owned the hero quest board game. Loved both, and never knew about the name change until many years later!😃
This was my first Sierra Game, and yes, it was the OG “Hero’s Quest” box… which wildly confused me when people started talking about the “Quest for Glory” title. This was my favorite series.
Likewise, ADG Interactive made a great fan remake of QFG2, which is the only one which never received a VGA release. Their game is even fully compatible with main-series save games, so it can simply be substituted for the EGA original without any issues.
Yeah, the second one is the only part of the series I wouldn’t go back to. Those cities had crazy mazes for the streets, and it’s too easy to get lost in the original game.
@@formerfatboy90 The fan remake actually fixes that. You can choose a simplified version of the city map which makes navigation much easier. Because, yeah, wandering aimlessly through dark alleys was not fun and a bad design choice.
There's a boxed copy of Heroes Quest in a closet at my parents house. My brother was a Sierra nut when we were kids and he got it as soon as it came out. I'm 95 percent certain it's a Heroes Quest box and not a Quest for Glory box.
I played Hero‘s Quest first time last year! Got a complete in box edition and was very intrigued by the depth and scope. Amazing compared to games like Space Quest 3, which I adore but which is terribly short.
This is one of my most favorite games of all time. EDIT: Oh! Oh! I still have my original copy of Hero's Quest! I remember being so excited because after sitting with my dad while he played all the other "quest" games... I finally had one of my very own! I was only in 1st grade, so it was pretty tough and he.. helped me a lot. ;)
The EGA version of this with text parser (not the abomination with point and click) is my absolute favorite game of all time. To answer your question, yes the version I grew up with was Heroes Quest, and somewhere at my parents house it sits still. I was really annoyed when they changed the name for the sequel.
Yeah, I saw they came out with a redo for #1, with graphics enhancement and using point and click like King’s Quest V. I didn’t buy it after finding my copy of Quest for Glory 3 was buggy and they came out with a version 2. Was I supposed to download a patch or version 2 in 1993? A bad sign of computer game industry to come.
One of the local thrift stores here in Canada has a boxed copy of Hero's Quest on display like the one in your video. It's in rough shape but it's about $90.00. I've seen it there a few times in the last year.
RPGs and King's Quest games were the very definition of my childhood... I'd heard of this but how or why I managed to never own or play it is a mystery of mysteries. I might be 25-30 years later than I should've been but I gotta check this out now!
I remember stumbling into an easter egg with the fairy ring and dancing. Instead of ballroom dancing there was head banging and air guitar. No idea how I managed it though. (Only reason I knew it was special was because a friend that loves these games was watching me play.)
Great series! Played them all up to 4.. and there they started to lose me a bit. Tons of great memories and I love how the NPC's popped up throughout the series.
This was my first real role-playing game. I loved it so much I tolerated it on a monochrome display on a computer that took a full minute to load a screen transition, and yet I still managed to get about 120 or so puzzle points even without a guide.
Our copy when I was a kid was titled Hero's Quest. I had no idea about the board game until the internet came along. I was confused about the name change when my best friend got the Quest for Glory Collection. We played them all together, good times. Last week I beat Manhunter: New York and The Colonels Bequest. I'd like to hear what you have to say about those games.
I still remember when this was out under the original name Hero's Quest. I was working for Sears and Software Etc. around the time of this game (Sears didn't sell computer software but I regularly walked the mall visiting Electronics Boutique and Babbages- Software Etc. was in a different mall).
I had the original Hero's Quest box and game. I was rocking a 286 and DOS 3.14, using ten(!) 5 1/4" disks to run the game because I had no hard drive. "Please insert disk 4". Also, once I got a 486, using the turbo feature really helps you level up quick!.
I love this series. I started with II though, and III was the first I owned. I own them all on GOG though. I also love the first Hero-U game which is a spiritual successor to this series set in an alternate timeline of its setting. Fortunately the first Hero-U game focuses on my favorite class but I plan to get the second game once its out.
I started with #2 as well and spent a lot of time building 3 characters plus the Paladin you can earn for the next. Game 3 was the first computer game I bought that didn’t work right: it glitched and I couldn’t import my characters from 2. Another guy had game 3, version 2, but you can’t save and load back onto version 1. Maybe they expected you to download a patch in 1993! That was my last Sierra game.
I THOUGHT this game was originally called Hero's Quest! Sadly, I didn't have it as a boxed copy, but rather a pirated one. I have since acquired a legal copy through Steam and its on my "to-play list". I do have some fond memories of the game and I enjoyed its whimsical humor and Easter eggs and references scattered throughout. Thanks for the great video and stay safe out there!
Omg you’re covering a game I still play today, Ima edit this with comments after I watch. I’m such a fanboy of this game. You didn’t mention the “razzle dazzle root beer” code lol I was waiting for it . I’ve played this a million times and it’s entirely different every time. As a kid raised on Sierra before Square took me over , this is like their FFI .
this one totally escaped me, and I'm sorry I missed it. this looks really entertaining. Great summary! and a video giving an overview of the King's Quest series, or on your favorite one, would be fantastic. Rock and/or roll FNA
Definitely check it out! The QFG games are probably the best overall series Sierra ever published, with much better playability and user-friendliness than most of their other titles. And the mix of traditional adventure and ARPG is totally unique, nothing since has ever quite had the same vibe.
I love the Quest for Glory series, I like how the adventure aspect has multiple ways to solve the puzzles, it's a good challenge but nothing too moon-logic Sierra-hard puzzles, it's more about being creative with your character. The VGA point and click remake of it I like a bit more but both are excellent.
I love Hero's Quest. Tried to play the first sequel one time and got bored with it. I once had a character maxed out in every stat except climbing (stuck at 87) and the one spell you only get at the beginning if you are a magic user.
These are NOT text adventures. The term "text adventure" is exclusively reserved for games like Zork, which ONLY had text, no graphics. Sierra created the graphical adventure.
Interesting choice! I found that Trial by Fire had the highest barrier to entry. The time limit and the sheer complexity of Shapeir are intimidating at first but the game is rewarding if you keep at it. It has a fun sense of "daily routine" as you try and make the most out of your day by training to raise your stats (while making sure to get enough food, water, and rest), hoping that when the endgame rolls around you'll be skilled enough to make it through. The remake by AGDInteractive Studio is fantastic.
I always played as a hybrid character. I would choose Fighter but would allocate points into Magic and Thief skills, and build those along with his fighting skills. This opened up so many possibilities in playing the game... for example, if you have good enough stealth and climbing as a fighter, you don't need to fight Toro. You can just sneak past him and climb over the wall, completely bypassing that fight. You do miss out on completion points as a Fighter, though, since he's the only minotaur and you get points for each enemy type you defeat in the game. Of course, this can cause some interesting problems later on. For example, in QFG2, if you complete the Wizard's Academy challenge and get the Reflect spell, you will be forced to do the Magic User's path through the end of the game. Fine if you're a Magic User, but this can cause a problem for Fighter mains that are F/M or F/M/T multiclassers, if they are attempting to get the Paladin class later. This is because you lose out on some Honor during the Magic User's end sequence and you won't hit the Honor necessary to become a paladin (though you can choose to be a paladin at the start of QFG3 anyway, but you won't get the in-story scene during QFG2). So you really have to be careful on how deep you spec your multiclasses.
I haven't played any of these, but I've played Heroine's Quest: Herald of Ragnarok, which I'm told is very similar, and you can grab for free. Unfortunately, I couldn't get into it.
I never really grew up with the Sierra games (which is a bit odd since I was the right age for a lot of the greats) but I never actually played any of these ones, despite owning them all thanks to GOG. I did back Hero-U on Kickstarter though, which I enjoyed quite a bit (I know you've done a video on that one too. I am just WAY behind on my subscriptions right now lol) but I still wanted to comment on this one and say you did a great job. I'd definitely be up for seeing you tackle more Sierra games, or any old PC Point 'n Clicks down the road!
One of my best friends growing up had the original. I remember not getting into the other titles because I didn't understand why they changed the name, and being a bit of a snob against any kind of change as a kid, it turned me away from trying Quest for Glory II. I still have my copied copy of the original Hero's Quest lol, but sadly I don't talk to that friend anymore, so I have no idea if he still has all his big box PC games. He had everything back when it was new, but didn't take great care of it. So, for all I know, they went through that house with shovels one day and emptied it all out. Maybe I'll send him a message
So in one of the cd collections the QG1 has a bug and crashes when the Stooges show up at the end of the game so you can't import your hero to game two. This was one of the first games you could import your hero from game to game. /throw rock /get rocks
I played QfG when I was a kid, and the AGI engine just blew my mind. But looking at it now, it’s amazing how I didn’t recognize half of the monster straight from the D&D monster manual.
Great series! I'd love to see your take on Quest for Glory 4. I love the gothic ambience they use. It seems to take inspiration from HP Lovecraft and Ravenloft. It was narrated by John Rhys-Davies(Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones). One character was voiced by Jennifer Hale, who has voiced tons of stuff including Mass Effect, Metal Gear, SW Knights of the Old Republic, and a zillion more. Baba Yaga makes a return. There's even a Monty Python killed bunny to fight. As much as you like old school games I highly recommend you check it out.
You can actually play it yourself, if you like. The anthology is available on Steam, and ADG put an SVGA remake of QFG2 out for free, and it's compatible with the save file character carryover. Brief synopsis of the other games in the series: Quest for Glory 2: Trial by Fire takes place in the desert land of Shapier. The hero travels down with Abdulla and the Katta couple to address the bandits troubling the land. Along the way, the hero meets the local Adventurer's Guild leader, the liontaur Rakeesh, a paladin from the distant land of Tarna. Also with the Adventurer's guild is the zulu warrior Uhura from the land of Tarna, who helps to train the Hero in martial combat. Soon, elementals begin attacking the city, and the Hero must defeat them (with some help from the local sorcerous, Aziza, and his friends from Spielburg). After defeating the elementals, the hero travels to Shapier's sister city, Rasier, across the Great Desert. There, he must thwart the ultimate plot to release a terrible djinn that will bring doom to the land. After stopping the ritual to make this happen, the Hero is brought back before the sultan of Shapier, where he is named the Prince of Shapier (this is important later). For characters that strive to a completely honorable and forthright campaign, the culmination of quest may offer the character the option to class change to a paladin. Quest for Glory 3: Wages of War takes place in the land of Fricana. Following the events in Shapier, the sorcerous Aziza transports the Hero, Rakeesh, and Uhura to Tarna to prevent a war brewing between the Simbani and the leopardmen. This leads the hero to an ancient temple where he must stop a demon (the true source of the war) from fully entering the world. After the demon's defeat, the Hero is teleported away to places unknown. Quest for Glory 4: Shadows of Darkness takes place in the dark land of Mordavia. The Hero wakes to find himself in a strange cave seemingly made of bone. He walks out and finds a woman nearby who introduces herself as Katrina, and hints at a dark evil that looks to spread across the land (we're sensing a recurring theme here). Eventually, the Hero makes his way to the local village and is... less than enthusiastically welcomed by the local Burgermeister, and likewise the townsfolk appear wary of the stranger. It is soon discovered that vampires and their minions truly rule over the land from the nearby castle, heralding woe for everyone. After the Hero restores the local Adventurer's Guild, he sets out to right the wrongs of the land and eventually must confront an old adversary and his master, and thwart their plans to restore the Dark One that will herald eternal darkness. After these events, the Hero is then transported by Erasmus to the land of Silmaria. Quest for Glory 5: Dragon Fire, as stated, take place in the land of Silmaria. Another day, another evil threatens the land, and the Hero must discover the plot that now threatens Silmaria. To do so, the Prince of Shapier is entered into a quest with four other contestants, all competing for the now-empty throne of Silmaria after the King was murdered without an heir. Among these contestants is Elsa, Baroness of Spielburg. The quest takes the contestants all over Silmaria, and even into the depths of Hades itself, where an interesting choice is presented to the Hero. The culmination of events brings our Hero to his greatest battle against a fearsome red dragon.
I tried playing this a couple of weeks ago but was having issues with no sound. Ill have to try it again. Also on a side note being a fan of the nes mac venture series theres a duo of games on gameboy The sword of Hope 1 and 2 I been playing. There like Shadowgate with rpg elements, you should check it out if you havent yet.
You just found your UA-cam channel I'm liking what I'm seeing I would like a better playlist and and your videos are a little longer other than that really enjoying your stuff
You COULD spend your time grinding to level up your character OR you could buy our special Quest for Glory Super Adventure XP-boost that also comes with two additional 14 pixel skins free of charge!
Sierra also did an excellent VGA color remake of Quest For Glory and to ensure that the entire series would be available in VGA or better, some fans (AGD Interactive) did a remake of Quest For Glory 2 that you can find in about 10 seconds of googling

razzle dazzle root beer 🤩
This channel makes me really miss looking at computer software games when Baggage's retail store was still around.
Thanks for sharing - I hear you. For me it was a Walden Software. Just looking through all those big box PC games for an hour. The good stuff.
I remember stumbling into an easter egg with the fairy ring and dancing. Instead of ballroom dancing there was head banging and air guitar. No idea how I managed it though.
(Only reason I knew it was special was because a friend that loves these games was watching me play.)
Maybe you ate one of the mushrooms? It gives you a psychedelic scene if you do.
It's based on your agility score at the time, I think.
Your ability stat was low, so he didn't know how to ballroom dance.
oooh, thanks. Wondered about that!.
Great series! Played them all up to 4.. and there they started to lose me a bit. Tons of great memories and I love how the NPC's popped up throughout the series.

It has a fun sense of "daily routine" as you try and make the most out of your day by training to raise your stats (while making sure to get enough food, water, and rest), hoping that when the endgame rolls around you'll be skilled enough to make it through.
The remake by AGDInteractive Studio is fantastic.
@@BB-te8tc to be fair I’m biased by nostalgia because it’s the first game in the series I was introduced to.
Your playthrough was a lot of fun and I glad you uploaded the livestreams later thank you
I actually had the box copy of the game which had the original name of Heroes Quest, wish I had kept the box.
I miss those old PC games. Still have my star wars tie fighter and dark forces games. I just need an old computer to play them on haha.
Quest for Glory, my favorite game series of all time!
I haven't played any of these, but I've played Heroine's Quest: Herald of Ragnarok, which I'm told is very similar, and you can grab for free. Unfortunately, I couldn't get into it.
I've got MBs HeroQuest and it's expansions. It's an awesome boardgame
Hero Quest is fantastic. Used to own it as a kid but sadly it did not survive the rigors of time.
@Lassi Kinnunen 81 lol that's the best video on UA-cam.
My favourite pc game series of all times? Hate to admit it but they're Even better than Space quests
So in one of the cd collections the QG1 has a bug and crashes when the Stooges show up at the end of the game so you can't import your hero to game two. This was one of the first games you could import your hero from game to game. /throw rock /get rocks
I've heard of this game series. But never played any of them.
I'd love follow-up episodes detailing the rest of them.
I remember Sierra for the Incredible Toon Machine lol
YES! Would love to see more coverage of these games.
I will gladly watch any of your reviews they are all awesome.
Hey thanks!
Ask about brigands
I played QfG when I was a kid, and the AGI engine just blew my mind. But looking at it now, it’s amazing how I didn’t recognize half of the monster straight from the D&D monster manual.
Lord of the realm 2 baby!!
I love Fates of Twinion!
I never played the series and so I'm interested in hearing about the other titles as well ^_^
You can actually play it yourself, if you like. The anthology is available on Steam, and ADG put an SVGA remake of QFG2 out for free, and it's compatible with the save file character carryover.
Brief synopsis of the other games in the series:
Quest for Glory 2: Trial by Fire takes place in the desert land of Shapier.

Same here. Definitely have the box. Not sure if everything is still in it. We bought it early when I was a kid.
LGR, Clint, May be searching for it. Contact him.
*pick nose*
You COULD spend your time grinding to level up your character OR you could buy our special Quest for Glory Super Adventure XP-boost that also comes with two additional 14 pixel skins free of charge!
Ha!
Sierra also did an excellent VGA color remake of Quest For Glory
and to ensure that the entire series would be available in VGA or better, some fans (AGD Interactive) did a remake of Quest For Glory 2 that you can find in about 10 seconds of googling
King's Quest is trash, Quest for Glory is the better game series
