Tempo is too fast.. mid range should flow effortlessly...no interruption with emphasis on the left hand..which he does well. The tempo would be improved with a definitative..lift ..drop ..to he approach..
Finally someone who brings out all the adventurous dynamic changes, uses perfect rubato, plays clearly audible transitions from one section to the next. The transitions from one section to the next are extremely important and it is a relief to hear someone play them effectively. Power, control, sensitivity, excellent phrasing and voicing.
a bit rushed in certain areas but wholly agree! lovely pedal control! im sure he has perfected by now. my benchmark was Kissin! not a super difficult piece but correct phrasing is very trying.
Nikolai Lugansky is hands-down my favorite pianist right now. I not only love all of his interpretations, but I also love watching him perform. His hands, his body language, and hey, he's not even bad looking either!
I am not Russian so not 'biased'. But there definitely is something magical in the Russian pianists, particularly when they play music by Russian composers. This is fantastic!
In Germany it's called the Russian soul. Lugansky on that: "I didn't know it until now, and in Russia they don't speak of a Russian soul either. But if it is written about in the West, perhaps it does exist after all ..."
This is surely one of the finest interpretations of the current top Rach performers. Lugansky is reknowned for his controlled but powerful technique. He also has a penetrating intellect that helps shape such attractive performances. Just terrific.
Brilliant!!!!! I'm speechless--there just aren't enough adjectives!!! Can't wait to see what Lugansky would do with Concertos Nos. 2 & 3!! (and #1, also, which ought to be played more)-- A born Rachmaninovian!!!
Re Moment Musicaux 4: Before there was speed metal, there was Rachmaninov. This is the hottest, most passionate, fiery, emotionally raw piano piece I've ever heard. It's magic.

OMG, what a beast. This video made me buy Rachmaninoff's (who's always been my favourite composer) Complete Piano Collection played by Lugansky. 6 CDs of pure awesomeness. Thank you, capetond, for uploading this. :)
I'm seriously beginning to like Lugansky's interpretations more so than Rachmaninov himself. I love how much faster he plays moment musical op16 #4, yet he still keeps things subtle and soft when he needs to.... So good.
Is it just my headset or soundcard that is bad, or is the sound-quality a little bad?? I dont have total clear sound, but a little scratching noise coming when it gets high volume..... :( THANK YOU WHOEVER YOU ARE FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO!! :-)
@36beachbum clearly it was a rhetorical question so I don't understand why you feel the need to respond to my comment and secondly i said "in my opinion" so again i wasn't asking your input, just stating how i felt about it.
@reflexpg Woah! You know I discovered him by this video on youtube, and then not a few weeks pass before my dad e-mails me saying that "he's performing for 30 bucks 15 minutes away from my house tomorrow..." Am I lucky or what???????????? It was amazing, and he IS cute, even live up close ;)
@lasker500 "for me, no pianist plays Rachmaninoff better than Lugansky. Adorable!" Try Emil Gilels that's a lot greater than lugansky,of course he is doing his job great))
what brand piano is that? did you not see the logo on the side of the piano in this video? it is obviously a steinway grand piano model D made in hamburg germany.
SIN LUGAR A DUDAS, SE TRATA DE UN PIANISTA FUERA DE SERIE. CONOCÍA EL MOMENTO #4 TOCADO POR LAZAR BERGMAN, Y LUGANSKI NO SE QUEDA ATRÁS! OIREMOS HABLAR DE ESTE MUCHACHO, QUE YA ES UN GRAN MÚSICO!
He has achieved a perfection, that most pianists will never achieve. This is not an opinion. Its a fact. His Rachmaninoff has the fiery Russian passion that only 2 other pianists were able to capture. Rachmaninoff himself, and Horowitz. Wait another 20 years, this pianist will be the Cziffra and Ricther of the 20th century
The best performance of Rachmaninov in my opinion. It is not only a difficult masterpiece, but also, for a pianist, it is so difficult not to sound as a "picky machine" while playing it. And Nikolai plays it so brilliantly, fluently. With so much strength in the same time. GENIOUS!
This might just be the most perfect renditions I have heard. Simply spine tingling and so spot on. Rach is smiling down on this performance. Pure poetry.
@@KV4671 Richter too staccato and fast. So is Rach"s himself. There is a sort of common sense to a lot of music, beyond personal taste. I think it has to do with the chord progressions and the natural mood they evoke.
Dear Nikolai, you certainly mastered Rachmaninov's Prelude in the greatest of ways. Congratulations young man, you are obviously gifted. Take care and may God bless, protect and keep you in His caring love for ever.
I think you're right, he seems to nick the 'F' at 3:17 but I would not have noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out. With piano playing at this level, when all the fire, concentration and musicality are there, wrong notes don't seem to matter. They are sacrificed on the altar of passion!
The best interpretation i have ever heard...
Excellent, but not quite as exciting or sensual as Ashkenazy's. ua-cam.com/video/gXnjX9SnBnc/v-deo.html
I like Lugansky’s interpretation of Rach more than Rach’s own interpretation of Rach

I didn't believe this commwnt at the beginning of the video but now I've listened to it I can completely agree with it

"renowned" not "reknowned"
What a GOLDEN phrasing and BRILLIENT sound!
He did these back-to-back!? Man, what I wouldn't give to have been there in the audience.
Very beautiful
incredible
I must've watched this 50 times through the years, and I always come back. Amazing piece and performance.

Lugansky's interpretation is best when compared to others
Amazing. Best ever heard. Artful and technically flawless.
in love with this piece opus 23 no 5 and it's power.
In my opinion these are the best two works composed by Rachmaninoff in his history ,and a great version of Lugansky!!Bravo!!
Best performance I have heard so far of this brilliant piece.
He´s an amazing pianist.
A master, especially in rachmaninoff.
I like his interpretation in both pieces,
The melody is very nice,
His harmony is very rich in many parts
Alal vera!!!! Bravo!!!

Maravilloso!
simplemente hermosa
The BEST interpretation. He plays it not like a barage of notes but manages to capture the meaning I think the composer intended.
E pure suonate dal vivo!!! Tanto rispetto e ammirazione ❤
es una maquina este tipo, geniooo!

my favorite piece of rachmaninov ;)
Music will never be about perfection. It is always about emotion (PERIOD).
Ich bekommen von dieser Interpretation nicht genug!
Magnifico. Bravissimo l'Artista 🌹
This is the best
i agree with you
I love dramatically throwing my arms up at the end of a piece! Besides when I am playing, that is the moment when I feel I can fly away.
Bravo!
Perfection
Wow,was für ein Pianist
Perfect
Perfect interpretation :)My favourite video !
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
I had no idea Jake Gyllenhaal could play piano this well!
True. This is the best performance ever. By anyone. But I still love watching Valentina Lisitsa :-).
What can I say... just superb!

I can play these really well in my dreams.
for his moment musical part, his interpretation is very aesthetic.
I'm fairly certain that he can do one fingered pushups. Look at those pillars… dear lord.

in terms of live performance, this one is the best for me.
As for recording, valentina lisitsa's the best.

Pity about the sound quality, otherwise it would be perfect.
I love him when he plays Rachmaninov
And Chopin
He sings out the inner voices in the middle section of 23/5 better than any other performer I've ever heard.
