At 40 years old I finally figured out what I did wrong for so many years: I established different (lower) standards for buying clothes than I have for wearing them! I know it sounds stupid. I would buy shoes that I really wanted in the wrong size because mine was sold out. Pants that fit great as long as I was standing but couldn't sit down in. Colors I liked but that would make me look sickly. And so on. I never had a super huge wardrobe but there was always this large percentage I liked but would not wear. Now I'm finally rebuilding my wardrobe step by step 🖤
Su Ann, I am 43 and realized a couple years ago I have the exact same problem. My issue was heel height and not the size of the shoe. What you say about the clothes - I had the exact same issue. Now, I have fewer clothes but I wear a much greater percentage of them !
Shopping addiction is real and physiological, we get a feel-good dopamine hit from it several times over, when: ordering a new item, receiving it, and on the first wearing(s). Once that stops happening, we sometimes wonder what we saw in these items! Fast-fashion has made this an easy addiction to develop, because the products are so cheap and easy-to-get. Clothing used to be relatively expensive, because it was much higher quality, and we did slower, more thoughtful shopping in bricks-and-mortar shops, and could try things on before buying.
I hate to admit it but this comment is so me! 😂😂😂 but I don’t get that feeling of why did I buy this after the high comes down 😂😂😂 I actually love my wardrobe now. I’m slowing down on my spending or trying to anyway.
One thing I stopped doing is buying prints. I noticed that I grew very tired of prints in my wardrobe, but never grew tired of my basics (even though they are "plain"). I do still have some prints in my outerwear and in some of my handbags. However, because I am not wearing those items on a daily basis (I switch them out frequently) I never get tired of them!!
I’m so grateful I found your channel. I have been in the fast fashion trap my whole life. Since finding your channel I’ve revamped my wardrobe to only high quality natural fibers in silhouettes I enjoy and colors that suit me. THANK YOU!
I hadn't really thought of how much I value I place on garments that require minimal care (eg. trousers that don't need ironing and still look fresh after a handful of wears, or good woolen items that I maybe only need to depile once a year) until you had spoken about it. I don't want to LOOK effortless. I want to BE effortless!
It’s more like five closets full of clothes for me. I got hooked on online shopping during the long lockdown, now I have so much stuff (and debt) it’s overwhelming. Once I could get out and about again, the addiction went away, but now I have to deal with the tons of cheap clothes I bought. I need to get back to my “One In One Out” rule, it worked for 40 years, until the pandemic. I love everything, which makes it difficult to declutter.
Thanks for the lovely insight. I’ve only recently really starting thinking about my style more critically and it’s such an exciting exploration of yourself.
You know You have a problem when you pull something from your closet and forgot when you bought it or act surprised that you found a new item. Covid helped me realize what I was doing wrong. I am much more aware of what I am doing. A different approach altogether. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you of pointing out the temptation of buying new clothing! I must admit I had never thought about this aspect before even though it explains a lot of my own shopping mistakes.
There is very compelling fun in newness. With a little bit of practice, though, I’ve found equal fun in multiplying ways of wearing a great piece or figuring out what works with it in my wardrobe. Also just running up the numbers on my pieces (which I see you do as well) is very satisfying.
I really enjoyed listening to your ideas. I just purged yesterday. I had many things that just bored me and that were taking up my space, and I still do need to carry on with the process. I am tired of spending time mindlessly shopping too.
I gave up wearing jeans... I'm tired of not finding the right size because of the fluctuations of my weight and stretchable waist pants is heaven sent.
I kind of am getting over this now, but looking back it felt like a huge vicious circle : I've always loved clothes, but I spent long years studying, so I didn't have much money and felt I had no other choice but to buy in fast fashion. But when you do, you seldom come across a piece that actually ticks off all your boxes, so it also took me forever to figure out what these boxes were, and to this day I wouldn't say I've fully figured it out. So I would buy "pretty good" pieces but there would always be some scenarios were they wouldn't work out, and I would feel like I had "nothing to wear". Plus if ever one of those pieces actually did work pretty well, it wouldn't last too long, so I would be back to square one a few months later. Now every time I splurge, I feel like it's too much, but a few months later, all I'm thinking is "I'm so glad I did this". Also, but it's a different issue, I'm not that patient, and I have had times were I bought a not-so-great piece just because I was tired looking for the perfect one. But I'm working on it 😅😅
Could you please make a video about how you care for your clothes? I don't own anything of cashmere or wool and I am a bit afraid of investing in them because my mom tells me it's hard to take care of it. Do you bring your wool and cashmere to dry cleaners or do you wash them by hand? And how often? I finally found a wool/cashmere dress that I'd love but still holding back from buying it. Thank you for your insightful video as always!
Just love your message. You once mentioned your makeup routine and I wondered if you still use only the one ABH shadow? The company holds its Black Friday sale which is a good time to purchase eye shadows. Thank you!
Thank you Naja. Great advice as always. I was wondering (first request alert) how as a minimalist do you navigate the obligatory gift buying.... now in the UK we have become far too much like America in our consumer habits... how do you communicate to people that you do not want gifts?? Or avoid picking out gifts people won't value like you value the items you curate?? :)
Great insight in this video. Thanks for sharing your process from shopping addiction to a smaller, carefully curated wardrobe. BTW, your gold jewelry looks great with your cooler toned skin and clothing:)
Just found your channel and I’m loving it!! I’m totally inspired to start building out a wardrobe I love :) just wondering, I can’t seem to find your Instagram via the link? X
Yup! I feel like I have way too many clothes that I couldn’t wear as in the place where I’m currently at, only those who have gotten the poison jab can go to malls and restaurants, which meant that I’m barred from entry. Oh well, I’ll be moving soon.
You antivaxxers always know how to make literally anything you see about the vaccine don't you? Even when a video or post has absolutely nothing to do with it you guys always know how to spin it around to ''It's the vaccine's fault!!!''. Why can't you just enjoy the video?
@@puckvanrooij Typical totalitarian communist that wants to restrict anyone that does not conform to leftist ideology. How about you mind your own business? I’ve taken vaccination before so your red herring isn’t going to work.
I consider myself more of a socialist actually. 🤷♀️ And thus I decided to get the vaccine for the people who can't and/or are fragile. Not getting this vaccine is one thing, but spreading misinformation in the comments of videos that don't have anything to do with the subject is next level.

I recommend also Daria Andronescu youtube channel and going for a color analysis to a proffesionalist. It changed my wardrobe. Good luck!

@@olagerta8199 I did Daria's program. Even a a former fashion biz professional it taught me so much about my OWN closet and shopping history!

In psychology it's called the hedonic treadmill and applies to things like checking your insta feed or the news too.

It's from swiss brand Evelyne-M 😊
