So, I'm 6mos pregnant and my husband and I just had the conversation regarding what Brit was talking about. We want to embrace the pregnancy and parenthood as best as we can. We really don't want to be those parents that complain about everything because so many people would love to be in our shoes and having a new baby. Granted, we know it won't be easy, but God blessed us with this gift and we want to cherish every moment .. even the tough ones.

I'm an introvert but when we bought our first house 2 yrs ago in a neat little mid-century subdivision (moving from the city) we knew we wanted to at least know our neighbor's' names! Sad I know but we lived in a rental area for 17 yrs and only knew 2 neighbors during that time due to thigh turnover -- though we stayed a long time. Now, while we don't have dinner together or are "friends", we have just the right amount of neighborly contact (for me anyway). We know all the people around us and we all look out for each other and our houses/property. Our neighborhood also uses the Nextdoor app which is great for meeting more neighbor's and posting community info. You guys should look into it.

I don't talk to my neighbors, since my next door neighbor and across the street neighbor moved. And I barely did that. My husband, however, was the social butterfly superstar who talked to our neighbors all up and down the block! Since he passed away 10 years ago, the neighbors have also changed. The vibe is also different.

I agree strongly with Austin at this point. Cell phones have changed us in SO many ways to the point we avoid face to face conversations with people we don't know. I remember once in school, our teacher made us turn our phones off and have a 15 minute conversation with someone in the class we have never spoken too. I'm mostly an introvert but those 15 minutes were awesome and they changed my whole view on getting to know more people and not let my phone isolate me and create a barrier around me.

  • @CherylHaurik
    @CherylHaurik 9 років тому +1

I agree it is a lost art talking to people. My grandchildren ask me "grandma why do you talk to everyone". Audrey is like my granddaughter Anna, no I wouldn't cry, she is very matter of fact. I believe cell phones have hurt talking, communicating with others. It is sad😢 Love, Hugs and Prayers...praying for my buddy Kailand.

Our neighborhood also has a ton of children and that helps in the parents meeting each other through our children. I am right there with you, Britt. I've been working on that too. It's hard having a 1 yr old who doesn't sleep, a 6 yr old who is energetic as all get out, and an 8 year old who is super sensitive, and also dealing with my own health issues. But I MAKE myself turn toward my blessings everyday and ENJOY my kids even when it is exhausting and crazy...because you're right, in the whole story of our lives, this is just a tiny blip of time...and it will be over before we know it.

I have lived in the same home since I was born and am 24 now, and some of my neighbors have moved away, but we all still keep in touch. I think it's so weird how people don't talk to their neighbors. Mine have been there since before I was born and I consider them my family. Even when my neighbors across the street moved we still invited them to cookouts and visited them often. And when all the kids come home we hang out and it's like we're 6 years old again riding our bikes around the neighborhood, even though we're all in or have graduated from college. I can't imagine my life without them.

I don't have any of the social networks, so outside of checking UA-cam and my email, looking down at my phone would be awkward to try to avoid conversation, because I would not have much to look through! Lol I suppose I could just scroll through my photo gallery next time. Nevertheless, it does not bother me. I have a three year old daughter so I try to teach her by being an example that talking and being friendly to others is a positive thing.

Times have changed, when we were kids we did activities but we weren't shoved into an activity to fill every waking minute like kids are now. Parents end up spending all of their time shuffling kids around making it hard to meet and spend time with neighbors. I think it's rare to find neighborhoods where people gather together anymore.

There's this older lady in my neighborhood that my mom sometimes visits to give her some company. My mom prays for her, helps her w/ things around her house, etc my neighbors are like my extended family in a way

Oh no, we definitely do the isolation thing over here in London haha...we do get on pretty well with one of our neighbours and usually stop to chat. But the other neighbours, it's more of a polite "Hi/Bye" sort of thing.

I guess it's because I live in the Netherlands, but people here have a lot of contact with their neighbors. I think it's because the Netherlands is smaller and we have to share space, if that makes any sense lol also (and this actually has nothing to do with this), there are special days here where streets are closed off for cars so people can organize a "neighborhood day". Children can play outside on bouncy castles or whatever, neighbors can have a drink, there's music...idk I think it's kinda cool and it brings everyone together.

Yup I never have been one to make friends with the neighbors but I've always felt so awkward about living next to someone and not know them.

I know when I was younger, I feel like my parents were cool with our neighbors. I think part of that had to do with me and my brother playing outside with all the neighborhood kids. Our parents would always have cookouts and birthday parties and invite the kids we played with. Their parents would come too, so our parents would get to know theirs. We also had block parties and neighborhood watch groups so it was easy to socialize with everybody. Everybody was always really nice and would watch out for one another's kids when we played in the street or at each others houses.
Kids don't play outside with neighbor kids anymore like I did when I was younger.

I'm originally from a small Village/Lokshin in RSA where everyone there is friendly and family-like, you can borrow stuff to and from your neighbor without anyone being awkward about it. Then 5 years ago i moved to a cosmopolitan city and everyone is individualistic, i still don't know my neighbors or a lot of people after all this time mainly coz everyone is just minding their own business, the first week i came to the city i greeted a lady on the street and she asked me "i'm sorry..do you know me from somewhere?" back in the village its rude to pass someone without saying hi or making small talk....maybe its a cultural thing but i prefer village life of a community :-)

No we are just cordial when we see our neighbors (hi and good bye!). Occasionally, we may ask how they are doing. To much bickering and talking about one another for us to get more involved than that! We know who they are, but that's about it. When my hubby and I were young, we knew our neighbors and were friends, but times have changed quite a bit and you have to be very careful who you let come into your life and your home. Especially when you have children! Love your vids!

I talk to most of my neighbours but it's also hard because they're all french... But I'm also never on my phone in public because I like to be aware of my surroundings, I don't wear earphones outside either.

we are friends with the neighbors on both sides and one across the street, the other neighbors on the block some we speak to and the others we don't. The ones across the street are like family we just hit it off with them.
